Brewery news USA: AB InBev workers threaten beer shortages from March
Beer shortages could begin from March if 5,000 workers at AB InBev-owned breweries do not have their requests met in the next 10 days, The Drinks Business reported on January 18.

The Teamsters union, representing the workers at 12 AB InBev-owned breweries in the US, has asked for wage increases, job security and improvements to retirement and benefits or has said that workers will strike when their contract expires on 29 February.

Last month, the workers voted 99% in favour of a strike authorisation and recently warned via X that “without a contract by February 29, there won’t be any beer come March”.

AB InBev brews beer brands including: Budweiser, Bud Light, Michelob Ultra, Busch and Stella Artois and, according to reports, makes around a quarter of all beer drunk globally and made profits of over US$32bn in fiscal year 2023, a 1.97% increase from 2022, despite a slump in US sales following the boycott that followed Bud Light’s social media promotion with the transgender influencer with Dylan Mulvaney. Last October, AB InBev also announced a US$1bn stock buyback initiative over the next year and signed a high profile football contract as well as signing a deal to become the Olympics worldwide partner ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NJ: Magnify Brewing about to start construction of its facility in Medford
Construction is on tap to begin soon for Magnify Brewing, which will become Medford’s fourth brewery, the Courier Post reported on January 17.

Magnify Brewing owner Eric Ruta said his brewery is targeted to open in the fourth quarter of 2024. The location will be 17 North Main Street, within walking distance of the three other breweries in town. All are located on Main Street.

Ruta said Magnify, which has been in business for almost nine years in Fairfield in North Jersey, said after a few years in business they had reached capacity and knew they wanted to expand.

“We looked into building a second location in several parts of the state to explore all options,” Ruta told the Courier Post. “Finding the right location was as important to us as the need to increase capacity. The decision on where to move took us years to finalize and ultimately, we landed on Medford.

Construction is expected to start soon.

Ruta said Medford has a beautiful downtown and they are excited about the visibility of being on Main Street.

“The town has a charm and community focus that we were drawn to,” he added. “For instance, we are excited about the many events Medford sponsors for community ...More info on site

Barley news Canada: General trend in feed barley prices flat to lower
Extreme cold temperatures in Western Canada have done little to move the needle on feed grain markets as corn continues to come up from the United States and end users appear well covered for the time being, Grainews reported on January 19.

While feed demand typically rises as temperatures fall, warmer weather in November and December has kept end users showing a reluctance to buy more grain.

The feedlots don’t want to be overbought, according to Susanne Leclerc of Market Master Ltd. in Edmonton, adding “we’ve had such good weather that they don’t want to be buying more than they need… everybody is hand to mouth right now.”

Leclerc said the general trend in barley pricing was flat to lower. However, she added that there was a wide price spread with spot opportunities arising from time to time for minimal tonnage.

Looking ahead a lack of subsoil reserves and minimal snow cover could provide support in the spring, but for now both buyers and sellers were waiting for a spark to move things one way or the other.

“All buyers want (prices) to go down, all farmers want (prices) to go up,” said Leclerc.

Brewery news USA, NC: Fletcher’s Blue Ghost Brewing Co. in process of sale
Since 2016, Zach and Nicole Horn have poured many a brew at Blue Ghost Brewing Co., and through it all, they've poured their heart and soul into their business. But soon it will be time for "last call", BlueRidgeNow.com reported on January 19.

The Horns announced on social media Jan. 17 that they're now in the process of selling Blue Ghost. Zach Horn told the Times-News on Jan. 18 that selling the brewery, at 125 Underwood Road in Fletcher, was one of the toughest decisions he and his wife have had to make.

"Like many small business owners, you sometimes have to choose your business over your family. We have come to the realization that though we love Blue Ghost, the time we must sacrifice with each other and our children, to keep it operating successfully is costing us a price that we can no longer pay," Zach Horn said.

"In the end, the most valuable commodity that any of us have, more valuable than any amount of money, is time."

Several brewery closures and sales have occurred locally in the past few years, including Catawba, Archetype, Eurisko and Bhramari in Asheville. Urban Orchard closed one of its two cider taprooms, and Ginger’s Revenge ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Craftboro Brewing Company announces last day of operation
The sad saga of businesses leaving South Green Shopping Center in Carrboro continues as the Craftboro Brewing Company announced its closing will be on Feb. 17. The popular brewery follows the demise of Coronato and the Oasis Cigar Lounge in October, the Local Reporter reported on January 17.

In a statement written by owners Amy and Jason McCarter, sent to TLR on January 16, “We close the doors knowing it was not due to our beer, because we make the best damn beer around. Tate is a wonderful person and continues to wow us with his skill of brewing, and it’s hard not to feel bitter about closing our doors when we have one of the most talented brewers around. We close the doors knowing it was not due to our brewery, y’all loved our space! You chose our space to host baby showers, birthday parties, graduation celebrations, wedding receptions and even a wedding! We are honored to know our brewery is part of so many other stories in the works. We have loved our staff over the years as they’re Craftboro family, too.

Brewery news Vietnam: Beer and wine makers facing challenges due to new legislation
Enterprises in Vietnam’s beer and wine industry are currently facing significant challenges due to the impact of Decree 100’s strict drink driving penalties and the rising prices of raw materials, einnews.com reported on January 18.

The economic downturn has had a negative effect on businesses in the beer and alcohol industry, leading to a decline in their financial performance. These businesses have also experienced a decline in their stock prices. Since the beginning of 2023, they have been grappling with reduced consumption as well as the repercussions of Decree 100.

Domestic beer industry enterprises have reported numerous difficulties, including high prices for imported raw materials, weakened consumer demand due to reduced discretionary spending, and the need to strengthen advertising, promotions and discount policies to boost sales and protect their market share.

Furthermore, these enterprises face tough competition from imported beers and foreign beer brands owned by multinational corporations. Importing companies enjoy substantial support from their foreign parent corporations in terms of expertise, financial resources, human resources, technology, raw materials, and brand development and maintenance.

The Việt Nam Beer - Alcohol - Beverage Association (VBA) has stated that the beer industry was severely affected by the prolonged social distancing measures imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic, ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Independent brewers having to operate in incredibly difficult market
A skyrocketing excise tax, legacy debt from the pandemic period, increased production costs, and decreased consumer demand have combined to create an incredibly difficult market for Australia’s independent brewers to operate within, the Beer & Brewer reported on January 17.

While the sector has seen increasing numbers of independent breweries entering administration in recent months, for Hawkers Beer Founder Mazen Hajjar, this is nothing new.

“These are exactly the same as the challenges that we have been facing over the last 20 years, but what has changed is that the economic conditions have amplified what we’ve been facing for decades,” he said.

A major factor leading to the recent spate of independent breweries entering voluntary administration is the legacy debt acquired during Covid. During this period, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) allowed breweries to defer their liquor excise payments, providing some taxation relief to struggling breweries. However, the ATO is now pursuing brewers to repay these debts, despite continuing economic difficulties. Kylie Lethbridge, CEO of the Independent Brewers Association, explained that difficulties in repaying this debt are compounded by poor operating conditions.

“We pay the third highest beer tax in the world, so they’re quite high taxes. Many breweries came out of the pandemic ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea & Japan: Korea’s beer imports from Japan soar in 2023
Korea's beer imports from Japan soared last year to regain its leading position in the country's import beer market after five years, according to the customs office on January 17.

The resurgence of Japanese beer products appears to have benefited from the release of a viral video showing a worker urinating into a tank at Tsingtao Brewery.

Last year, beer imports from Japan topped other import brands with $55.5 million, jumping from $14.5 million in 2022, $6.9 million in 2021 and $5.7 million in 2020, data from the Korea Customs Service (KCS) showed.

Japanese beer imports ranked first with $78.3 million in 2018, but they nosedived to $39.7 million in 2019 due to Japan's restrictions on exports to Korea of key industrial materials for the production of semiconductors and displays.

In 2019, Japan also removed Korea from its list of countries given preferential treatment in trade procedures.

Korea viewed the moves as retaliation against 2018 Supreme Court rulings here ordering Japanese firms to compensate Korean victims of forced labor during Japan's 1910-45 colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula.

Little doubt, the rebound in beer purchases from Japan is attributable to improved relations between Seoul and Tokyo from last year after President Yoon Suk Yeol offered to ...More info on site

Brewery news India: AB InBev considering expansion of brewery operations in Karnataka, local government says
The world's largest brewer AB InBev is considering a Rs 400 crore investment to enhance and expand its brewery operations in Karnataka, according to the State's Large and Medium Industries Minister M B Patil, the Business Standard reported on January 18.

A Karnataka delegation led by Patil held discussions with executives of AB InBev on January 17 at the World Economic Forum annual meeting in Davos, the Minister's office said in a statement.

Barley news Australia: November 2023 malting barley exports up 79%
Australia exported 907,324 tonnes of barley and 54,609t of sorghum in November, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

November feed barley exports totaled 526,345t, down 26 percent from 712,335t shipped in October, with China on 439,708t the biggest market by far, followed by Japan on 76,757t and Vietnam on 4172t.

Malting exports for November on 380,979t were up 79pc from 213,279t shipped in October.

Again, China was the largest market by far, taking 280,924t, with Mexico and South Africa tied for second place by volume on 31,500t, and Peru taking 23,950t.

On sorghum, China was the destination for 50,290t of November-shipped sorghum, 92pc of the 54,609t total for the month, with Taiwan on 2083t and The Philippines on 1959t the second and third-biggest destinations.

November sorghum exports were up 38pc from 39,547t shipped in October.

Flexi Grain pool manager Sam Roache said barley volumes continued to impress.

“China accounted for over 60pc of the feed and 70pc of the malt and we should continue to see this percentage increase as older business to other destinations is executed,” Mr Roache said.

“We expect December volumes to grow again and crack the magic 1-million-tonne mark, with January stems looking similar, and plenty of business on ...More info on site
