Australia: Australia’s beer prices set to soar next month
|
For those who have been considering reducing their beer consumption, now might be a good time to start. Inflation continues to hit the hop and is affecting the cost of beer in a big way. It’s anticipated that Australians may soon be paying A$15 for a pint, LAFM reported on January 19.
The beer industry is not happy, blaming increased taxes for the price hike. Starting next month, beer lovers will be hit with another cost-of-living blow as the tax on alcohol increases yet again.
Industry leaders are calling on the federal government to take action by freezing the tax and implementing urgent reforms to protect local manufacturing.
News.com reports that the beer tax will skyrocket to over A$60 per litre of pure alcohol due to indexation on February 1. CEO of the Brewers Association of Australia, John Preston, expressed concern over the negative impact this price increase will have on both brewers and beer enthusiasts.
“In many venues, people are already paying over A$15 for a pint. This is a significant amount considering the tightness of family budgets,” said Mr. Preston.
The excise on a pint will rise to about 90 cents, and the tax on a A$55 carton of beer will exceed A$20

Turkey: Small producers deem Turkey's planned alcohol deposit 'another nail in coffin'
|
Turkey's Agriculture Ministry plans to require alcohol producers to deposit 5 million to 50 million lira ($1.7 million) collateral to cover tax or administrative fines that they may face in the future. Small producers have stated that the new deposit scheme would make them vanish against the big producers, DuvarEnglish.com reported on January 18.
It took 15 years for Mustafa Çamlıca to earn international recognition for his wines, but he and many other small and medium sized Turkish producers fear a planned new financial burden could destroy livelihoods in a sector already facing daunting hurdles.
Under the rule of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's Islamist-rooted Justice and Development Party (AKP) for 21 years, alcoholic drinks makers in Turkey have faced an increasingly onerous tax burden and other restrictions, leaving the multi-billion dollar market stagnant.
Now small winemakers and breweries fear a planned financial collateral requirement will make it even harder for them to survive in the tough local market, and frustrating efforts to develop their unfulfilled export potential.
Producers already face obstacles such as a ban on online sales since 2011, a prohibition on marketing and restrictions on retail sales. Alcohol cannot be sold in close vicinity to public buildings or schools,

The Czech Republic: Czech Pilsner Urquell beer sold more cheaply in Germany than in the Czech Republic
|
Pilsner Urquell is being sold significantly more cheaply in German supermarkets compared to the brewery’s native home of the Czech Republic, the Drinks Business reported on January 22.
According to reports via Novinky.cz, while Czech supermarkets are charging up to CZK40 for a half-litre can of Pilsner Urquell, the German retailer Kaufland offers it for €0.99 (CZK24.80 per half-litre). In a drill down into prices, a Czech expats site additionally highlighted how, despite this, Kaufland supermarkets in the Czech Republic still retailed half-litre cans of Pilsner Urquell for CZK37.90.
The price disparity has raised questions, considering the beer is brewed in the Czech Republic, and potentially incurs higher transportation costs when shipped to the German market and yet the price difference implies substantial savings for Czechs willing to cross the border, reportedly saving up to CZK300 on a carton of 24 cans.
Kaufland representatives told reporters that contract terms with suppliers are negotiated locally and are adapted to each of the specific market conditions for individual countries, with a focus on offering favourable prices within certain regions and noted that the pricing strategy adopted by German retailers, was to keep the cost of Pilsner Urquell under the €1 pricepoint.
According to Plzeňský Prazdroj spokesman

|
Paulaner USA, the exclusive US importer of the legendary Paulaner and Tsingtao brands has announced a record-breaking year for its core portfolio and continuing growth in its Allied Brands, Hacker Pschorr and Fuller’s English beers, the Wine Business reported on January 22.
Shipments to wholesalers for Paulaner Brand Family rose +11%, with depletions up +12% indicating increasing demand for the leading premium German import. USA: AB InBev lays off workers in the US
|
Anheuser-Busch InBev said it laid off an unspecified number of workers in its US sales division as part of the world’s biggest brewing company’s strategy of focusing on its largest brands, BNN Bloomberg reported on January 23.
“On January 12, we announced updates to our U.S. sales team structure that will simplify our organization and bring even more focus behind our Mega Brand strategy,” the company said in an emailed response to questions from Bloomberg News. This will drive “increased collaboration with our wholesaler partners and retailer customers.”
It didn’t disclose further details.
Last year, the company said it would trim less than 2% of its US workforce, or about 350 jobs, after an online promotion featuring a transgender influencer sparked a conservative backlash that damaged sales.
