Brewery news USA, OR: Oregon craft brewing industry suffers one of its worst years in 2023
Oregon’s storied craft brewing industry suffered one of its worst years in 2023, with depressed draft beer sales and rising costs creating more pressure than some of the state’s businesses could bear, the Oregon Public Broadcasting reported on January 20.

According to the Oregon Brewers Guild, Oregon is home to about 400 breweries, brewpubs and taprooms, which collectively provide 50,000 jobs and generate nearly $9 billion in economic output. But the state lost around 30 of those businesses last year, and even more have contracted or are seriously struggling.

“We are seeing national trends towards canned cocktails, Seltzers and more nonalcoholic beer options,” said Sonia Marie Leikam, the co-owner of Leikam Brewing and the vice president of the Oregon Brewers Guild. “Those make up now about a third of our sales. They are lower profit margins for us, and that impacts our bottom line.”

Leikam says that, like other small craft brewers, she works another job in addition to her time at the family brewery.

“We also are spending just a ton more time and energy creating events,” she said. “So we now have crafting classes and a book club and comedy nights. Really anything that the community wants, we offer our space for ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: North Pillar Brewing Co to hold grand opening celebration on January 27
Glasses will be filled with fresh brew during the grand opening celebration Saturday, January 27 for North Pillar Brewing Co.

The event will start at 11 a.m. and go until 10 p.m. Saturday, January 27 at its renovated historic building located at 212 E. North St., Waukesha.

"We couldn't be more excited to show off the transformation of this historic site and can't wait to start serving up some delicious beverages we've been brewing up here," reads a post on Facebook.

Brewery news USA, CA: Anchor Brewing Company could soon be getting a new owner
San Francisco's historic Anchor Brewing Company could soon be getting a new owner, CBS News reported on January 22.

The 127-year-old brewery shut down and went up for sale in October for $40 million. And now, the brewery has multiple bids.

Spokesperson Sam Singer said they believe the finalists will be chosen by end of January and a "winner to purchase all or parts of Anchor Brewing Co. will be made in the first quarter of the year."

The closure of the brewery was due in part to the pandemic and its effect on sales.

"The pandemic struck a knife through the economic heart of Anchor from which it was unable to recover," Singer told KPIX.

Anchor Brewing Company's heritage goes back to the California Gold Rush, and on its final day of service, so many people showed up that the business had to turn people away.

"We hope that a new buyer or buyers will step forward and continue operating and selling Anchor for future generations of San Franciscans and Californians," Singer said.

Brewery news USA, MA & NH: Wachusett Brewing Company reportedly purchased by Finestkind Brewing
Central Massachusetts legacy brewery Wachusett Brewing Company has reportedly been purchased by New Hampshire-based Finestkind Brewing, the Worcester Telegram reported on January 21.

Finestkind Brewing, the owners of Smuttynose Brewing Company in Hampton, is expanding its reach into Central Massachusetts and has no immediate plans to change Wachusett’s beer lineup, according to The Boston Globe.

Calls for comment from the Telegram & Gazette to Wachusett Brewing and Finestkind Brewing were not immediately returned.

Founded in 1994 at co-founder Ned LaFortune's family farm in Westminster, Wachusett Brewing has become a staple of the Central Massachusetts brewing scene.

Along with the Westminster brewery, Wachusett has a brew yard at the Worcester Public Market in the Canal District.

The company opened a larger brewhouse at its Westminster location in 2015 and announced it would be an anchor tenant for the Public Market in 2019.

Wachusett's beer line includes the well-known blueberry ale and Wally Juice IPA. The company serves multiple beers year round as well as several seasonal beers; the lineup largely consists of varieties of ale.

Steve Kierstead, Smuttynose’s CEO, said in an interview with the Globe that Wachusett's commitment to quality aligned with Smuttynose's values and that its leading role in the fruit beer category would help diversify ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Paulaner USA announces record-breaking year for its core portfolio
Paulaner USA, the exclusive US importer of the legendary Paulaner and Tsingtao brands has announced a record-breaking year for its core portfolio and continuing growth in its Allied Brands, Hacker Pschorr and Fuller’s English beers, the Wine Business reported on January 22.

Shipments to wholesalers for Paulaner Brand Family rose +11%, with depletions up +12% indicating increasing demand for the leading premium German import. Tsingtao, the #1 Chinese imported beer in the US, saw shipments to wholesalers grow +23%, with depletions up +25%. Hacker Pschorr shipments were +3% and depletions +2%, while the Fuller’s portfolio, paced by London Pride’s reputation as the preeminent English Ale, increased +10% on a shipment basis.

“The performance of our portfolio in context of the overall beer market trends in 2023 are testimony to the quality of our products, the dedication of our sales team and the commitment of our wholesalers to the strategic direction we have established for our business,” said Steve Hauser, President and CEO of Paulaner USA.

“2023 saw continued growth in both retail distribution and brand sales velocity as our local teams worked with their wholesalers to drive new opportunities in the marketplace. Working together we expanded our off-premise chain store distribution in the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Summerlands Brewing Company hoping to open in Hunt in March
Brian Hunt spent years dreaming of opening his own brewery before deciding to make it happen after a serious health battle, the Lansing State Journal reported on January 21.

The Mason resident and father of six, who is legally blind, was already brewing beer from his kitchen in 2016 when doctors found a large, benign brain tumor that was crushing his brain stem. His brewing hobby was a constant for the next few years, as he underwent two surgeries and then radiation treatment to remove the growth.

Hunt lost all hearing in his left ear and learned that sometimes you shouldn't wait to pursue a dream.

"Getting through all of that, you know, you always have the long-term plans, what I wanted to do when I retire ... and I learned you don't always get to wait," Hunt, 49, said. "You don't always know what's going to happen."

In early 2020, just before COVID-19 arrived in Michigan, Hunt and fellow hobby brewer and co-worker Joe Prevo started planning to open their own brewery. The pair, both programmers at Jackson National Life, have spent the last three years laying the groundwork for Summerlands Brewing Company.

They hope to open the brewery and bar March 15 in ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Former Jamestown Brewing Company building to be sold to Wicked Warren’s
The former Jamestown Brewing Company building has been saved from foreclosure and will be sold to the owner of Wicked Warren’s, the Post Journal reported on January 23.

At its meeting on January 23, the county Industrial Development Agency board approved a $950,000 low-interest loan to Wicked Jimmy’s LLC to support the purchase of property at 115-121 W. Third St., Jamestown, the site of the former Jamestown Brewing Company building. The building had been the subject of a foreclosure action by Evans Bank.

If the project comes to fruition, Wicked Jimmy’s will be the LLC operating the business as Wicked Warren’s.

“It’s great to see the further expansion of our beverage and service industry in Chautauqua County, especially by a team with a proven track record. Once open, the Wicked Warren’s Jamestown location will help to encourage both area residents and out of town visitors to come to the downtown,” said County Executive Paul “PJ” Wendel.

It will be operated by Robert Roth, who is also majority owner of the initial Wicked Warren’s, already in operation in Warren. Roth will serve as president of the Jamestown operation and has 27 years of experience running his own business. In addition, the proposed Jamestown business will ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: AB InBev lays off workers in the US
Anheuser-Busch InBev said it laid off an unspecified number of workers in its US sales division as part of the world’s biggest brewing company’s strategy of focusing on its largest brands, BNN Bloomberg reported on January 23.

“On January 12, we announced updates to our U.S. sales team structure that will simplify our organization and bring even more focus behind our Mega Brand strategy,” the company said in an emailed response to questions from Bloomberg News. This will drive “increased collaboration with our wholesaler partners and retailer customers.”

It didn’t disclose further details.

Last year, the company said it would trim less than 2% of its US workforce, or about 350 jobs, after an online promotion featuring a transgender influencer sparked a conservative backlash that damaged sales.

Brewery news USA, NY: K2 Brothers Brewing acquires Canandaigua-based Young Lion Brewing brand
K2 Brothers Brewing earlier this month opened a huge second location in Wayne County, the Democrat and Chronicle reported on January 23.

Now, the brewery owned by brothers Kyle and Bradley Kennedy has purchased the Canandaigua-based Young Lion Brewing brand. The move comes months after the Other Half Brewing, which has a location in East Bloomfield, purchased the Young Lion brewing facility and lakefront taproom on Lakeshore Drive in Canandaigua.

"The Young Lion brand has had a positive and unique impact on Western and Central New York's craft beer industry,” said Bradley Kennedy, who is president of K2 Brothers, in a statement. “It was a natural fit for K2 to become Young Lion's new home."

This strategic move solidifies a longstanding relationship between K2 Brothers and Young Lion, which dates to at least 2019, two years after both the Young Lion Brewing Co. under owner Jennifer Newman and K2 Brothers opened.

Within the first two years, K2 outgrew its brewing capacity at the original Empire Boulevard location in Penfield and began contracting a few of its flagship beers at Young Lion in October 2019, Newman said.

In May 2023, K2 acquired the former Freewill Elementary School in Walworth to ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Australia’s beer prices set to soar next month
For those who have been considering reducing their beer consumption, now might be a good time to start. Inflation continues to hit the hop and is affecting the cost of beer in a big way. It’s anticipated that Australians may soon be paying A$15 for a pint, LAFM reported on January 19.

The beer industry is not happy, blaming increased taxes for the price hike. Starting next month, beer lovers will be hit with another cost-of-living blow as the tax on alcohol increases yet again.

Industry leaders are calling on the federal government to take action by freezing the tax and implementing urgent reforms to protect local manufacturing.

News.com reports that the beer tax will skyrocket to over A$60 per litre of pure alcohol due to indexation on February 1. CEO of the Brewers Association of Australia, John Preston, expressed concern over the negative impact this price increase will have on both brewers and beer enthusiasts.

“In many venues, people are already paying over A$15 for a pint. This is a significant amount considering the tightness of family budgets,” said Mr. Preston.

The excise on a pint will rise to about 90 cents, and the tax on a A$55 carton of beer will exceed A$20 ...More info on site

Brewery news Turkey: Small producers deem Turkey's planned alcohol deposit 'another nail in coffin'
Turkey's Agriculture Ministry plans to require alcohol producers to deposit 5 million to 50 million lira ($1.7 million) collateral to cover tax or administrative fines that they may face in the future. Small producers have stated that the new deposit scheme would make them vanish against the big producers, DuvarEnglish.com reported on January 18.

It took 15 years for Mustafa Çamlıca to earn international recognition for his wines, but he and many other small and medium sized Turkish producers fear a planned new financial burden could destroy livelihoods in a sector already facing daunting hurdles.

Under the rule of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's Islamist-rooted Justice and Development Party (AKP) for 21 years, alcoholic drinks makers in Turkey have faced an increasingly onerous tax burden and other restrictions, leaving the multi-billion dollar market stagnant.

Now small winemakers and breweries fear a planned financial collateral requirement will make it even harder for them to survive in the tough local market, and frustrating efforts to develop their unfulfilled export potential.

Producers already face obstacles such as a ban on online sales since 2011, a prohibition on marketing and restrictions on retail sales. Alcohol cannot be sold in close vicinity to public buildings or schools,

"After the ban on ...More info on site

Brewery news The Czech Republic: Czech Pilsner Urquell beer sold more cheaply in Germany than in the Czech Republic
Pilsner Urquell is being sold significantly more cheaply in German supermarkets compared to the brewery’s native home of the Czech Republic, the Drinks Business reported on January 22.

According to reports via Novinky.cz, while Czech supermarkets are charging up to CZK40 for a half-litre can of Pilsner Urquell, the German retailer Kaufland offers it for €0.99 (CZK24.80 per half-litre). In a drill down into prices, a Czech expats site additionally highlighted how, despite this, Kaufland supermarkets in the Czech Republic still retailed half-litre cans of Pilsner Urquell for CZK37.90.

The price disparity has raised questions, considering the beer is brewed in the Czech Republic, and potentially incurs higher transportation costs when shipped to the German market and yet the price difference implies substantial savings for Czechs willing to cross the border, reportedly saving up to CZK300 on a carton of 24 cans.

Kaufland representatives told reporters that contract terms with suppliers are negotiated locally and are adapted to each of the specific market conditions for individual countries, with a focus on offering favourable prices within certain regions and noted that the pricing strategy adopted by German retailers, was to keep the cost of Pilsner Urquell under the €1 pricepoint.

According to Plzeňský Prazdroj spokesman ...More info on site
