Japan & India: Suntory looking to invest ‘much more’ in India
|
Japanese multinational Suntory is looking to invest “much more” in India, chief executive Takeshi Niinami has said, while taking a cautious stance on business in China, The Drinks Business reported on January 25.
Suntory is looking to expand its drinks and nutrition businesses in India with local partners, Niinami said in an interview. The multinational brewer and distiller is looking to invest “much more” in the India market its chief executive said, and is eyeing possibilities both for building new factories and for acquiring existing businesses.
“Both are very feasible, but the key thing is how to locate a good, worthy local partner,” he said. “That’s very important.”
He acknowledged that while China is still an attractive market, spy laws recently used to detain foreign workers have raised alarm bells for businesses.
Niinami said that considering the current climate in China, he could not justify sending in international staff for an investment push. “We are willing, but there is a hampering factor that is the espionage act,” he said in an interview last week at the Reuters Global Markets Forum (GMF) in Davos.
China’s spy agency, the Ministry of State Security (MSS), is pursuing a more public and political role, releasing its first advert to

Kenya: East African Breweries dismisses report on Tusker beer sale as ‘market speculation’
|
East African Breweries (EABL), the Kenyan unit of Diageo Plc, on January 26 dismissed a media report that its parent company wants to sell the Tusker beer brand as part of broader cuts, Reuters reported.
U.S. news outlet Axios reported last month that Diageo was looking to sell Tusker along with other beer brands including Ireland-based Smithwick's, Kilkenny and Harp Lager, saying they were a margin drag on the rest of the business.
But in an interview with Reuters EABL CEO Jane Karuku denied the brand would be sold. "Those are market speculations," she said, declining to comment further.
There was no immediate comment from Diageo on the other brands that were reported as being considered for sale.
EABL, which is the market leader in Kenya, including with whiskey brands like Johnnie Walker, posted net sales value growth for its first half to the end of December.
But its margins were compressed by higher costs of production and financing, after the Kenyan shilling, the currency of its biggest market, weakened, and interest rates rose.
EABL would focus on improving margins in the second half to cushion the company's performance, Karuku said.

World: Global grain production to increase to new record in 2023-24, IGC says
|
Global grain production is expected to reach a record 2.307 billion tonnes in 2023-24, mostly due to a solid rebound in corn output, the International Grains Council (IGC) said at its 59th council session convened in New Orleans, Louisiana, US, on Jan. 24.
The meeting was chaired by Anita Katial, USDA’s Agricultural Counselor for the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland, US Embassy London.
Grain production will increase 2% year-over-year, the IGC said, as will consumption at 2.314 billion tonnes.
Global inventories may contract 1% to 590 million tonnes for a seventh consecutive drawdown. World trade is expected to drop 3% to 415 million tonnes, with smaller wheat, corn and barley shipments.
Amid lower prices and less-than-ideal sowing weather in some countries, the IGC noted that global wheat harvested area was predicted to drop by 1% in 2024-25. While rapeseed/canola plantings were likely to contract, they would remain well above average.
Tied to prospects for a rebound in Argentina, global soybean production in 2023-24 was seen at a record of 392 million tonnes, a 6% year-over-year gain. Also linked to gains in Argentina, consumption was pegged at a peak, while aggregate inventories were set to climb for a second successive year, including accumulation in key

Japan: Kirin expects to more than double exports of its whisky by 2025
|
A Japanese whisky "renaissance" will help Kirin Holdings more than double exports of its premium brand by 2025, the company's master blender was quoted as saying by Reuters on January 24.
Japan had fewer than 10 distilleries for most of its whisky history, which hit the century mark last year. But that number shot past 100 in the past few years as new entrants sought to take advantage of huge global demand and eye-watering prices.
"I really believe that we are in the midst of a Japanese whisky renaissance," said Jota Tanaka, who leads Kirin's whisky business. "There are some fantastic companies with great ambition and technical skill being born."
For much of its history, Japanese whisky was seen as an imitation of scotch and produced mostly for domestic consumption. But from about 2008, bottles from Suntory Holdings and the Nikka brand owned by Asahi Group Holdings, opens new tab started to rack up international awards, sparking a boom in global demand that drank dry the supply of aged stock.
Kirin's Fuji Gotemba Distillery, which sits at the foot of Japan's sacred mountain, celebrated its 50th anniversary last year, but Kirin remains a distant third in Japan's whisky market behind Suntory and Asahi. All
