Brewery news USA, MD: Mystique Barrel Brewing and Lager House to open in former Suspended Brewing Co. in Pigtown
As one brewery leaves Pigtown, another brewery from three industry veterans will look to take its place this summer, MSN reported on January 27.

Mystique Barrel Brewing and Lager House plans to open in the former Suspended Brewing Co. space at 912 Washington Blvd. in June. The opportunity to open there comes after the seven-year-old Suspended Brewing exited the neighborhood at the end of last year for a new space in North Baltimore.

Business partners Les White, Tom Pagano and Steve Marsh will take over the space next month for renovations, with plans to build a kitchen offering entrees such as pulled pork – a nod to the neighborhood – and small bites. The trio, who are leasing the space, plan to offer a variety of brews including European-style lagers, sours and barrel-aged wild ales.

Brewery news USA, VA: Armed Forced Brewing Company holds its grand opening in Ghent
The beer is flowing at a new brewery in Norfolk. Armed Forced Brewing Company held its grand opening in Ghent Saturday, January 27, 3WTKR reported.

The brewery is in the former O'Connors Brewery along West 24th Street.

Looking at the brewery's decor, it's easy to learn the theme is military-based, and the goal is to honor members of the Armed Forces and first responders.

"This is a tribute to our military and a tribute to America. So we're here we're excited to be here," said CEO Alan Beal. "We made a huge investment in Norfolk, Virginia and Hampton Roads. And we're just excited to get the doors open."

Governor Glenn Youngkin announced the company's arrival in Norfolk last year. City council later approved the conditional use permits, making way for the company to open its doors.

But controversy followed close behind—the company's stance toward the LGBTQ community came into question. A tweet from Robert O'Neill, a former Navy SEAL, and part of the brewery's leadership, expressed displeasure against drag queens in the Navy.

That caught the attention of the LGBTQ community, with some members previously telling News 3 they were disappointed in city council's decision.

"The fact that that's being allowed means the City of Norfolk is ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Cinema Brewing holds ribbon-cutting ceremony in Souderton
Cinema Brewing celebrated its grand opening Thursday, Jan. 18 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, the North Penn Now reported.

Tucked inside Souderton’s Broad Theater, the brewery drew dozens of community members, employees and elected officials for the occasion. Manager Tanya Horst thanked everyone for attending and wished the brewery "a bright future.”

"Let’s remember that this is more than just a ceremonial snip,” she said. "It’s a promise to brewing moments of joy, crafting memories, serving not just beer but experiences that bring us together.”

"We are so happy to have you here in town, and we look forward to spending many nights in your brewery,” added Kylie Harrington, Souderton Connects board member.

The brewery is owned by Broad Theater owners Kevin Hoff and Charlie Crown, who described the amenity as one of their "original goals” to distinguish themselves from other theaters.

"What’s better than beer and a movie?” asked Hoff.

The space was initially rented by Free Will Brewing but closed after a year. Hoff and Crown then decided to open a brewery themselves.

"So we went through the whole approval process and got our brewery license,” said Hoff.

The menu includes a selection of eight beers as well as wine, canned hard cider and pre-mixed and canned ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Human People Beer coming to Seattle this summer
Former Modern Times Beer San Diego brewers Tim Kamolz and Andrew Schwartz, have teamed with supply industry veteran Mallorie King, to open Human People Beer in Seattle, Washington’s West Canal Yards development this summer. It is one of the most anticipated upcoming Oregon and Washington breweries scheduled to open in 2024, New School Beer reported on January 26.

“We all have family up here and have been itching to move to the pacific northwest for some time,” says brewer/co-owner Andrew Schwartz. “Personally, I had my formative beer drinking years in Oregon and learned to love and appreciate the unique and ranged beer scene and that was 15 years ago! Since then, every brewery has evolved or changed in some way or another. Seattle has become one of my favorite and most uniquely characterful beer cities in America. We are extremely excited to be here and have felt only warm welcome since arriving. We hope to add something special to a nicely developed beer scene in Seattle.”

Schwartz has been a part of the pacific northwest beer industry since obtaining master of studies degree in microbiology at Oregon State University in 2011. From there he made his way to Ithaca Beer Co. in ...More info on site

Brewery news USA,MI: Livingston County to have a new microbrewery and taproom soon
Beer aficionados in Livingston County will soon have a new microbrewery and taproom, WHMI reported on January 26.

Brad Jonckheere, founder of Schmuck's Brewery, is also the owner of American Concrete Products on Mason Road in Howell. He's planning to convert an old office building into the brewery's first physical location. With mining completed, Jonckheere says construction is expected to begin in the spring, with the location becoming a neighborhood watering hole.

Jonckheere plans to include stouts, ambers, IPAs and sours with up to 18 styles on tap. He's also planning a restaurant that will include sandwiches, fried foods and pizza.

Re-zoning for the microbrewery took place in 2017, with site approval following in 2019, and amended this past November.

Additional plans include possible campground. Redevelopment ideas near the site's 30 acre lake have been brewing for years. The total site is around 100 acres, and is expected to eventually have areas for tents, RVs and cabins.

Jonckheere began brewing as a hobby but eventually trained at Schoolcraft College where he studied under famed brewmaster Tom Block.

Brewery news USA, IN: Ten20 Craft Brewery now open in Clarksville
A Louisville brewery celebrated the opening of its new location in Southern Indiana, WAVE 3 reported on January 27.

The brewery started with its first location in Butchertown in October 2020 and since then, it’s expanded all across the Louisville Metro area with the Clarksville location being in the works for about a year.

“Just look around. I mean the building and the growth that’s happening, the apartment buildings that are going up, the future plans for the Main Street development and park and all that, we’re thrilled,” co-founder Jim McGuire explained. “We’re just grateful to be in here, be a part of it here on the front end.”

Ten20 also has locations in the Highlands and Anchorage.

Brewery news USA, WA: Penn Cove Brewing Company announces abrupt closure
It’s the end of an era for artisanal brewing in Central Whidbey, the South Whidbey Record reported on January 26.

Penn Cove Brewing Company abruptly announced this week that it was closing doors at its two locations on Whidbey Island and one in Lake Stevens. A year ago, the company also closed its Oak Harbor location.

The closures was announced on social media.

“After much consideration and a thorough evaluation of our financial situation, we have had to make the difficult decision to cease operations,” Penn Cove CEO Marc Aparicio wrote. “The decision was not made lightly, and we want to express our deepest apologies for any inconvenience or disappointment this may cause you.”

Aparicio and his brother Mitch started the Penn Cove Brewing Company in 2015, opening its flagship taproom in Coupeville in 2016. Following the success of the venture, the brothers opened the three additional taprooms.

The company originally worked with another small brewery to brew the different beers and ales off the island, but later built a state-of-the-art facility in Coupeville. The company was known for infusing the brews with local flavor, using pumpkins from Sherman farm and even mussels from Penn Cove.

“We understand that Penn Cove Brewing Co. has been more ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Random Precision Brewing Co. to close its doors for good on January 28
A Columbus craft brewery known for its production of sour and wild ales is closing its doors, 614Now reported on January 26.

According to a statement posted to its social media accounts by owner Jason Grable, Random Precision Brewing Co. will close its doors before the end of the month.

The brewery, which is located at 2365 W. Dublin Granville Rd. in Linworth, will close for good on Jan. 28 at 7 p.m.

“We can’t express how amazing the past six years have been and we want to thank everyone who came through our doors, but too many bumps in the road have brought us to this point,” Grable’s statement reads. “We’d like to think that we’ve brought our barrel aged sours to some of you who would never have thought to drink one. Maybe even made some sour beer lovers.”

The brewery will be open and running specials until it closes this weekend.

“We still have some kegs and could use your help emptying them this week,” Grable’s statement reads.

Brewery news USA, TX: Buffalo Bayou Brewing Company closes as landlord ends lease
Buffalo Bayou Brewing Company's lease at Sawyer Yards has been terminated, raising the likelihood that the longtime Houston brewery will cease operations permanently, according to reports on January 26.

Jon Deal, owner of Sawyer Yards, served Buffalo Bayou CEO William McLucas with a notice of default on Friday, per Eric Sandler of CultureMap Houston. The brewery and taproom located at 2101 Summer St. then closed, with orange cones blocking the entrance to the parking lot.

McLucas didn't immediately respond when reached out by Chron Friday evening.

Rassul Zarinfar founded Buffalo Bayou Brewing Company in 2011, operating out of 5301 Nolda St. in Rice Military. In December 2017, the brewery announced plans to build a $14 million brewery and taproom in Sawyer Yards and started raising money on the Houston-based investment platform Nextseed eyeing $1 million from interested community members to help fund the project. As 583 investors combined to raise the $1 million, Buffalo Bayou began construction of its three-story brewery and taproom in November 2018.

One year later, the brewery opened its sprawling, 28,000-square-foot complex at Sawyer Yards, which included rooftop downtown views and a full-service food program led by chef Arash Kharat. (In 2022, Kharat left Buffalo Bayou to join Blood Bros. ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: South River Brewing Company going out of business at the end of February
Shocking news to craft beer lovers in the area, the South River Brewing Company, formerly Highlander, is going out of business at the end of February, BayToday.ca reported on January 27.

In a Facebook post, owner Dwayne Wanner says, "Founded in 2009, it is with heavy-felt hearts that we have made the VERY DIFFICULT DECISION to close our brewery on February 29, 2024."

Wanner says the last four years have been "exceedingly difficult" for the brewery.

"Please know how grateful we are for your trust, confidence and support as our customers and to all fellow brewers for whom we have manufactured and canned products. We have been negotiating with a series of buyers over the last year and are still in talks with several groups. However, we are uncertain that these discussions will yield a positive result in the near term."

The post adds that the owners are taking all necessary steps to ensure that the transition is as smooth as possible for everyone involved.

In 2020 New Ontario Brewing, a local company expanded by taking over the production of all Highlander Brewing Company products, formerly brewed in South River. At the time, South River brewery was planning to move production to Ottawa or southern ...More info on site

Brewery news Germany: Oettinger acquires protein beer manufacturer JoyBräu
Germany-based brewery Oettinger has acquired JoyBräu, a start-up specialising in the manufacture of protein-infused non-alcoholic beer, FoodBev Media reported on January 29.

JoyBräu – a Hamburg-based start-up founded in 2016 by Erik Dimter and Tristan Bruemmer – produces functional protein-based beer for health-conscious consumers in Germany, as well as in other countries, including the US, Canada and the UK.

By integrating JoyBräu’s patented process technology into its product pipeline, Oettinger aims to elevate “the spirit, agility and willingness to experiment” that defines the protein beer brand, as it integrates the patented process technology into the Oe product pipeline.

JoyBräu‘s expertise in protein-infused beverages aligns with Oettinger’s broader vision for its innovation brand, Oe. Under Oe, the company plans to introduce a variety of functional drinks to both domestic and international markets in the coming year.

Oe is strategically aimed at capturing the functional drink markets, both domestically and internationally. The primary focus of its in-house product range revolves around the Original Oettinger brand, offering a diverse selection of beer, soft drinks and beer mixes.

Before the acquisition, JoyBräu successfully distributed its products globally, reaching markets in China, Japan, South Korea and the Middle East. Figures from 2022 reveal that JoyBräu achieved sales exceeding 6 million ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan & Hungary: Asahi announces $280 mln investment in Hungarian unit Dreher Breweries
Japan's Asahi Group Holdings is spending heavily to build a European presence as its home market shrinks, following up a Rugby World Cup sponsorship with a 100 billion forint ($280 million) investment in Hungarian unit Dreher Breweries, the Nikkei Asian Review reported on January 28.

Dreher, which marks its 170th anniversary this year, was one of five Eastern European breweries Asahi acquired in 2017 from Anheuser-Busch InBev for 7.3 billion euros ($7.9 billion at current rates). It is Hungary's top beer company, holding around 30% of the market, with brands including its eponymous mainstay Dreher and the nonalcoholic Dreher 24.

Asahi is homing in on Europe due partly to the relatively high share of upmarket items in beer sales there -- an important factor given the impact of rising material costs. The brewer's average unit price in the European market rose 15% on the year in the first nine months of 2023, compared with 9.5% in Japan and 3.1% in Australia.

The Dreher investment package will update the brewer's aging equipment over the course of 10 years. The first phase, running through 2026, will put 30% of the total toward new fermentation and conditioning equipment as well as sustainability efforts such as renewable ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Heineken to hike prices for its draught wholesale products from February
Heineken UK is set to introduce a 1.73% price hike for its draught wholesale products from next month, though the global brewer claimed it had made “considerable efforts” to “minimise impact of inflation” for its customers, the Morning Advertiser reported on January 30.

The Morning Advertiser understands the changes will be duty exclusive and come into effect for all deliveries of Heineken UK’s draught beer and cider brands from Monday 5 February.

However, the firm has frozen prices on its packaged beer and cider.

A Heineken UK spokesperson said: “We have informed our on-trade customers that we are freezing the price on packaged beer and cider and increasing draught wholesale price by an average of 1.73%.

“We have made considerable efforts across the business to reduce costs and drive efficiencies so that we can minimise the impact of inflation for our customers.”

In addition to the draught price hike, Heineken UK will also lower the ABV of its John Smith’s Extra Smooth brand from 3.6% to 3.4%, effective from 5 February on keg products and Monday 29 January for packaged beers.

The spokesperson added Heineken had “spent many months” perfecting the new version of the “much-loved beer”, including “extensive” testing with consumers to “ensure the ...More info on site
