Australia: Data relesead by IWSR projects significant growth of no- and low-alcohol beer consumption in next four years
|
Globally, Australia is one of the leading markets for no- and low-alcohol (NoLo) beer, which has traditionally been one of the strongest performers in Australia’s broader NoLo market, the Beer & Brewer reported on January 31.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics has reported a clear and progressive drop in alcohol consumption since the 1970s, and data released by the IWSR in 2023 projected significant growth of NoLo beer consumption in the next four years.
NoLo beers have held a strong position in the overall beer category for many years now, and John Preston, CEO of the Brewers Association of Australia, told Beer & Brewer that this is driven by a sustained shift from full-strength to mid-strength over the last decade.
“About 30 per cent of the beer market is mid-, low- and zero-strength beer in Australia, which is one the highest in the world. That is driven primarily by mid-strength, which makes up 26 to 27 per cent of the market in itself.
“Two of our greatest selling beers, Great Northern and XXXX Gold are both mid-strength beers, they make up a big part of the Australian market and have done for decades.
“I think it’s fair to say we are behind Europe in terms

USA: Bud Light sales still down year over year
|
Anheuser-Busch InBev's beleaguered Bud Light brand is still having trouble luring back the customers it lost following its controversial partnership with transgender activist Dylan Mulvaney last year, Fox Business reported on January 31.
Bud Light sales were down 29.9% year over year for the week ending Jan. 20, 2024 compared with the same period last year, according to the latest numbers provided to FOX Business by Bump Williams Consulting, which analyzed Neilsen IQ data.
Sales of A-B's signature Budweiser brand were also down 15% on an annualized basis for the week, while competitors saw growth.
Molson-Coors' Coors Light saw 12.2% sales growth, while Miller Lite sales rose 6.9%, and Yuengling Light soared by 72.3%.
Modelo Especial, the Mexican lager owned by Constellation Brands, also gained further ground against Bud Light, seeing a 10.8% sales boost on the week compared with the same time in 2023, when Modelo eclipsed the A-B brand to become the best-selling beer in the U.S.
Sales of Bud Light began to tumble in the U.S. in April of last year, not long after the brand created and sent custom beer cans to Mulvaney to mark her "365 days of girlhood."
That move and comments from Bud Light's marketing vice president at

India: Diageo, AB InBev prepared for possible disruptions during general elections
|
Diageo and Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world's biggest distiller and brewer, respectively, said they will be able to navigate sales and supply chain disruptions during the upcoming general elections in India when sale and consumption of liquor is typically banned on and around the voting days, The Economic Times reported on February 2.
"Generally, during elections in India, what we have seen in the past is that there are temporary restrictions imposed by various states like the sale of alcohol. So, I think that would be something that we would anticipate. We know the team in India knows how to manage through that. And I am sure that they will continue to do a good job on that," Lavanya Chandrashekar, Diageo's global chief financial officer, told investors, adding that the trend on regulations has been moving in the right direction in India.
Many excise officials posted in liquor factories are co-opted for election duty, apart from the increase in dry days during elections.
AB InBev, the maker of Budweiser and Hoegaarden, said it expects limited disruptions during elections and is preparing to offset brewing and distribution changes during the peak summer season, a period which accounts for more than a third of beer sales.

World: Diageo on the hunt for a new chairman amid slowdown in sales
|
Guinness owner Diageo is on the hunt for a new chairman to succeed Javier Ferran, as it attempts to reverse a slowdown in sales, the Grocery Gazette reported on February 2.
It is understood that the alcoholic beverage company has hired search firm Russell Reynolds Associates to find a successor for Ferran who’s tenure is due to expire in October 2025, Sky News reported.
Ferran has held the position since 2017, and his tenure was renewed last year for an additional three years, yet a source told the publication that the chairman could potentially step down a few months earlier.
It comes as Diageo has suffered a turbulent few months leading to the drinks giant issuing a profit warning in November and rumours that it was seeking to sell beer brands as profit hit a three-year low.
Last week, the Guinness owner announced it was set to cease direct supply to wholesalers not meeting its minimum order criteria.

Africa: Diageo appoints EABL's Anne Michira to head new unit
|
East African Breweries marketing and innovations director Anne Joy Michira will head Diageo’s new regional unit, the South, West, and Central Africa, The Star reported on January 31.
This follows the latest executive changes that will see her operate from London in her new role at EABL's parent company Diageo.
In the new appointment, she will be the Marketing and Innovations Director for South, West, and Central Africa (SWC) at Diageo.
EABL has been a net exporter of talent within Diageo in recent years.
Michira will take up her new London-based role from April 1 and will report to John Musunga, a Kenyan, who was appointed to head the newly established SWC business unit in November 2023.
The business unit comprises two regions covering Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean and West and Central Africa, including businesses in Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Ethiopia, South Africa, and Seychelles, among others.
Michira has nearly 20 years of experience in a wide range of roles in trade and marketing in the fast-moving consumer goods sector.
She joined EABL from British American Tobacco (BAT) in September 2015 as the Marketing Manager for Mainstream Spirits.
She then rose the ranks to Head of Spirits and then Head of Marketing, Beer for East Africa before
