Brewery news USA: Bud Light sales still down year over year
Anheuser-Busch InBev's beleaguered Bud Light brand is still having trouble luring back the customers it lost following its controversial partnership with transgender activist Dylan Mulvaney last year, Fox Business reported on January 31.

Bud Light sales were down 29.9% year over year for the week ending Jan. 20, 2024 compared with the same period last year, according to the latest numbers provided to FOX Business by Bump Williams Consulting, which analyzed Neilsen IQ data.

Sales of A-B's signature Budweiser brand were also down 15% on an annualized basis for the week, while competitors saw growth.

Molson-Coors' Coors Light saw 12.2% sales growth, while Miller Lite sales rose 6.9%, and Yuengling Light soared by 72.3%.

Modelo Especial, the Mexican lager owned by Constellation Brands, also gained further ground against Bud Light, seeing a 10.8% sales boost on the week compared with the same time in 2023, when Modelo eclipsed the A-B brand to become the best-selling beer in the U.S.

Sales of Bud Light began to tumble in the U.S. in April of last year, not long after the brand created and sent custom beer cans to Mulvaney to mark her "365 days of girlhood."

That move and comments from Bud Light's marketing vice president at ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Philadelphia’s first Black-owned brewery Two Locals Brewing Co. already open
Beer fan Richard Koilor bought a home-brewing kit in 2016 and set it up in his brother Mengistu’s West Philadelphia backyard. The first batch, they said, “tasted like beer.” Once they got better, they embarked on a greater mission:

To open Philadelphia’s first Black-owned brewery.

Last weekend, Richard, 33, and Mengistu, 43, opened Two Locals Brewing Co. at uCity Square at 37th and Market Streets, part of University City’s burgeoning science campus developed by Wexford Science & Technology and Ventas Inc. and the University City Science Center, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported on January 29.

It’s been less than four years since the Koilors got on the region’s beer map when they partnered with Harris Family Brewery and Double Eagle Malting on a beer labeled Black Is Beautiful (and brewed at Love City Brewing) to raise more than $9,000 for Black Lives Matter.

In late 2020, they met Avram Hornik, owner of Craft Hall in Northern Liberties, home of Mainstay Independent Brewing. The Koilors began working with brewer Brian O’Brien on developing the brand and brewing out of Mainstay, starting with Nubian, a brown ale (5.7% ABV), and Prolific, a hazy IPA (6.4%).

At their new home, their 15-barrel brewery eventually will dispense 12 varieties to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Union Bear opening a new production facility in Denton
Union Bear, a 33 Restaurant Group brewery based in Granite Park, is opening a new production brewing facility in Denton on Feb. 1.

The new location will serve as a production brewing and packaging hub.

“When we set out to become Plano’s first independent brewpub, we had no idea how far this would take us,” CEO/Owner Preston Lancaster said. “We’re thrilled to announce the opening of Union Bear Brewing Company’s very first production brewery, alongside a partnership with Andrews Distributing. We’re excited to share our passion for brewing with beer lovers all over the DFW area.”

The brewpub is located in an 18,000 square food facility that includes a restaurant, taproom, patio space, Union Bear craft beer and a menu created by the 33 Restaurant Group culinary team.

“The Union Bear Brewpub was founded with a vision as a community gathering place. We’ve had the opportunity to welcome guests from all walks of life and to get to know our regulars,” Tanner Fleming, Union Bear’s director of operations, said. “Many of them have become like a second family to us, sharing the ups and downs of life. We strive to build and nurture these connections in every community we are a part of and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Distant West joins Ballard Brewery District in Seattle
There’s a new brewery in the Ballard Brewery District: It’s called Distant West, and it’s setting up shop in Reuben’s Brews original location at 1406 NW 53rd St., My Ballard reported on January 30.

Distant West owner Greg Macaulay took over the space last summer and has been slowly turning it into a fully functioning brewery. He’s been softly opening the microbrewery over the past month, but his website shows he plans to be fully open by February.

Reuben’s Brews moved out of the space last year after 11 years there. It was Reuben’s first home in Ballard before the brewery expanded to its bigger taproom at 5010 14th Ave NW. Reuben’s now also has a larger production facility at 4700 9th Ave NW, plus its more recently opened Fremont location (4401 Fremont Ave N).

Brewery news USA, OR: Lazy Days Brewing to throw official grand opening of its two new Oregon locations
Lazy Days Brewing, a new ownership group that in the fall reached a deal to buy the two Oregon locations of Ex Novo Brewing, has completed the transition and this week is throwing its official grand opening, Oregon Live reported on February 1.

The new owners have worked over the past months to maintain as much continuity as possible during the transition at the original Ex Novo brewpub in Portland and the pizzeria in downtown Beaverton. And they want to keep the laid-back, casual feel that Ex Novo fans had come to appreciate at both.

“We want people to feel welcome, at ease, relaxed, at home,” says Jake Elder, one of the four co-owners, speaking on continuing the Ex Novo vibe while incorporating Lazy Days’ vision. “We want it to be like it’s Saturday morning and they’re in pajamas. And we want people to feel this is a place to get away after a long day at work and not worry about cooking, or meet up with friends on the weekends.”

The grand opening events will showcase much of that continuity. Both locations will feature an Ex Novo staple — Detroit-style pizza — and the owners have fired back up the kitchen at ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Poulsbo's Slippery Pig moving brewing operations to Bremerton
There are beer kegs piling up in Dave Lambert’s front yard and it’s starting to annoy him. Lambert, the owner of Slippery Pig Brewery who's known for his kilts and quirky style, also has boxes of glassware shoved up against the walls in the Front Street location and underneath its pinball machines, while full kegs are towered in the walk-in, leaving little room to squeeze by, Kitsap Sun reported on February 1.

Now, Slippery Pig is about to get a little more space to breathe. Lambert got the keys for a large vacated retail space on Callow Avenue in Bremerton’s Charleston District, has moved his brewing tanks south and plans to open a new location in March.

The Slippery Pig has been a resident of Poulsbo since 2010, first at a farm off Finn Hill Road and then the downtown location. When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, business began to change. Familiar customers began buying to-go food to support the brewery during the shutdown, Lambert said, and as restrictions eased the demand for the brewery’s food continued to grow.

The kitchen got busier, and now the Slippery Pig has a bigger staff than ever before, Lambert said. That’s all good, but Lambert says ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Voodoo Brewing Company to open its doors in Katy on February 6
The Voodoo Brewing Company opens February 6, 2024, at the former Local Table location at the Villagio Town Center on Peek Road and Westheimer Parkway, Katy. The party will go from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Covering Katy News reported on January 30.

"For the grand opening, we will have a free photo booth in front of one of our beautiful murals," said marketing manager Cat Gomes. "Guests will be able to take home their Voodoo Katy opening night photos, and they also have an opportunity to enter a raffle online if they post and tag @voodookaty."

There will always be plenty of craft brew on the menu. For the grand-opening, Voodoo will feature 20 rotating craft beers on tap with four local favorites.

Franchisees Jennifer and Peter Gomes say their brewpub will be a family-friendly operation.

There is always room for another brewery in Phoenixville, the Patch reported on January 31.

Twelve78 Brewery is expected to open in March at 35 Bridge Street.

After 30 years of homebrewing, owner Steve Rogacki and his wife, Kara, are planning to open a brewery with a beer garden.

Brewery news USA, MN: Three Twenty Brewing Company being sold to Twin Cities brewer
Three Twenty Brewing Company in Pine City is being sold to an experienced Twin Cities brewer, Bring Me The News reported on February 2.

Owners Nick and Cassandra Olson made an announcement Friday, saying after almost seven years it was time "to pass the torch."

The incoming owner, Lee Ankrum, has a decade of experience in the brewing industry, brewing at Dangerous Man Brewing Company and LynLake Brewery in Minneapolis.

The business is expected to switch hands mid-March, according to the Olsons. The change isn't expected to affect staff or the taproom itself, other than a short closure in the future to complete the licensing process.

"The decision to sell the brewery was not made lightly or quickly, and finding the right buyer for the business and the community was an important goal for us. This has been an incredible journey for our family. We are grateful for the people who make it so special. We are excited to share what we have built with a new business owner, allowing him to realize his dream and embrace the Pine City community," the Olsons said in a statement.

"We believe that this transition will not only preserve the legacy of Three Twenty Brewing Co., but ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NJ: Well-known Hackensack brewery The Alementary to close permanently
The well-known Hackensack brewery The Alementary announced that it will be permanently closing, northjersey.com reported on January 29.

The taproom, which has been home to original craft beers and award-winning lagers, posted on its Facebook page that over the weekend the shop came to the difficult decision to close.

"No business lasts forever, and you just gotta be okay with that. We’re sad, but it’s not a weepy sad," the brewers wrote in the post.

The Alementary has been serving customers at Voorhis Lane for eight years, blending beer with clever science-inspired names.

Owners Blake Crawford and Michael Roosevelt used their STEM expertise to create their own collection of stouts, lagers, porters, IPAs and ales. Roosevelt's background as a molecular biologist and Crawford's as a chemical engineer have helped them nail their method of crafting beers down to a science.

Crawford told NorthJersey.com in 2018 that the science aspect of brewing is very important to them, because "in this market, doing the beers that we do, the process has to be repeatable, accurate and consistent."

Roosevelt told NorthJersey.com that they "wanted their tavern to provide a sense of community" that welcomed everyone from all different backgrounds and walks of life. He said he was happy to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Ornery Beer Company Public House no longer coming to Herndon’s Arrowbrook Centre
A disappointing change for the new Arrowbrook Centre development in Herndon. Plans to open an Ornery Beer Company Public House here have fallen through, The Burn reported on January 31.

Arrowbrook is a new retail and residential project just off of 267 at Centreville Road (Exit 10). It includes two buildings with storefronts on the ground level and apartments on the floors above.

Ornery Beer Company had been announced as one of the future tenants at the center, but now we’ve learned that’s not happening.

“We will not be proceeding with the Arrowbrook development,” Ornery CEO Randy Barnette told The Burn. “We were unable to secure the financing to complete the project. We and the developer mutually agreed to terminate the lease. We continue to consider projects in second generation locations for our brew pubs — with lower development costs — to grow and utilize the full capacity of our production brewery in Bristow.”

Brewery news Australia: Data relesead by IWSR projects significant growth of no- and low-alcohol beer consumption in next four years
Globally, Australia is one of the leading markets for no- and low-alcohol (NoLo) beer, which has traditionally been one of the strongest performers in Australia’s broader NoLo market, the Beer & Brewer reported on January 31.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics has reported a clear and progressive drop in alcohol consumption since the 1970s, and data released by the IWSR in 2023 projected significant growth of NoLo beer consumption in the next four years.

NoLo beers have held a strong position in the overall beer category for many years now, and John Preston, CEO of the Brewers Association of Australia, told Beer & Brewer that this is driven by a sustained shift from full-strength to mid-strength over the last decade.

“About 30 per cent of the beer market is mid-, low- and zero-strength beer in Australia, which is one the highest in the world. That is driven primarily by mid-strength, which makes up 26 to 27 per cent of the market in itself.

“Two of our greatest selling beers, Great Northern and XXXX Gold are both mid-strength beers, they make up a big part of the Australian market and have done for decades.

“I think it’s fair to say we are behind Europe in terms ...More info on site

Brewery news World: Diageo on the hunt for a new chairman amid slowdown in sales
Guinness owner Diageo is on the hunt for a new chairman to succeed Javier Ferran, as it attempts to reverse a slowdown in sales, the Grocery Gazette reported on February 2.

It is understood that the alcoholic beverage company has hired search firm Russell Reynolds Associates to find a successor for Ferran who’s tenure is due to expire in October 2025, Sky News reported.

Ferran has held the position since 2017, and his tenure was renewed last year for an additional three years, yet a source told the publication that the chairman could potentially step down a few months earlier.

It comes as Diageo has suffered a turbulent few months leading to the drinks giant issuing a profit warning in November and rumours that it was seeking to sell beer brands as profit hit a three-year low.

Last week, the Guinness owner announced it was set to cease direct supply to wholesalers not meeting its minimum order criteria.

Brewery news India: Diageo, AB InBev prepared for possible disruptions during general elections
Diageo and Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world's biggest distiller and brewer, respectively, said they will be able to navigate sales and supply chain disruptions during the upcoming general elections in India when sale and consumption of liquor is typically banned on and around the voting days, The Economic Times reported on February 2.

"Generally, during elections in India, what we have seen in the past is that there are temporary restrictions imposed by various states like the sale of alcohol. So, I think that would be something that we would anticipate. We know the team in India knows how to manage through that. And I am sure that they will continue to do a good job on that," Lavanya Chandrashekar, Diageo's global chief financial officer, told investors, adding that the trend on regulations has been moving in the right direction in India.

Many excise officials posted in liquor factories are co-opted for election duty, apart from the increase in dry days during elections.

AB InBev, the maker of Budweiser and Hoegaarden, said it expects limited disruptions during elections and is preparing to offset brewing and distribution changes during the peak summer season, a period which accounts for more than a third of beer sales.

Brewery news Africa: Diageo appoints EABL's Anne Michira to head new unit
East African Breweries marketing and innovations director Anne Joy Michira will head Diageo’s new regional unit, the South, West, and Central Africa, The Star reported on January 31.

This follows the latest executive changes that will see her operate from London in her new role at EABL's parent company Diageo.

In the new appointment, she will be the Marketing and Innovations Director for South, West, and Central Africa (SWC) at Diageo.

EABL has been a net exporter of talent within Diageo in recent years.

Michira will take up her new London-based role from April 1 and will report to John Musunga, a Kenyan, who was appointed to head the newly established SWC business unit in November 2023.

The business unit comprises two regions covering Southern Africa and the Indian Ocean and West and Central Africa, including businesses in Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Ethiopia, South Africa, and Seychelles, among others.
