USA, LA: Crying Eagle Brewing Company holds groundbreaking ceremony in Lake Charles
|
Something new is brewing on the Lake Charles Lakefront. An official groundbreaking took place on Thursday, January 11, at 901 Lakeshore Drive for Crying Eagle Brewing Company – Lakefront’s new restaurant and microbrewery. This will be a second location for Crying Eagle, representing a $12 million investment for the region.
The company’s founder and President, Eric Avery, was joined by public officials, his development team, employees, family and community leaders to celebrate the beginning of construction of this new destination attraction on the scenic lakefront.
“We are incredibly excited to mark the beginning of construction,” says Avery. “We first announced this project four years ago, never imagining it would take this long to get to this milestone, but we also could not have imagined the challenges we would face – and overcome—during that time. This groundbreaking is more than just a ceremony to celebrate the start of a construction project. It’s a testament of the and resilience of the Southwest Louisiana community. We are so proud to be a part of it and to begin this exciting new chapter in our city’s history.”
Avery gave special thanks to Lake Charles Mayor Nic Hunter and the city’s administrative team for working with

USA, IL: New brewery coming to downtown Rockford in 2025
|
They say some things are just meant to be.
That seemed to be the case last year, when Alex Blondin and his business partner were looking for a building in downtown Rockford to open a brew pub and restaurant, the Rockford Register Star reported on February 5.
Six months ago, Blondin, a Rockford native and graduate of Auburn High School, and partner, fellow Rockford native Jake Felckowski, had a certain downtown building in mind for Bent Oak Brewery — until they happened upon another vacant property on the corner North Madison and Market streets and knew it was the right spot.
"We thought it would be perfect for a brewery," Blondin said of the 7,000-square-foot building at 125 N. Madison St. "Everything would be all on one floor."
There was a potential issue though. The building was for lease. Blondin and Felckowski were looking to purchase. So they decided to call the owner, Rockford development company Joseph James Partners, and ask if President Peter Provenzano would be willing to sell. He was.
"After a few back-and-forths, we agreed on a number," Blondin said. "That's how we got the building."
Blondin, a certified public accountant who works directly for Beloit businesswoman Diane Hendricks, said he was certain

USA, TX: 4J Brewing announces permanent closure
|
4J Brewing, an all-female-owned brewery in the Spring Branch neighborhood of Houston, announced on February 1 that it had permanently closed. “We are retiring!” read the Facebook post, which also thanked customers for their patronage over a nearly six-year run, Chron reported.
The 4Js in the name are sisters Jackie, Jessica, Joanna and Jennifer Edwards. Their father Larry was a longtime homebrewer who got his daughters into the habit. When Jennifer was laid off, she announced her intentions to start her own brewery at the Spring Branch lot her family owned.
In 2018, her dream became a reality when 4J opened. Jennifer and her mother Marilyn launched the brewery.
Unlike most breweries with aims of mass distribution and constantly shifting taps, 4J was a refreshing alternative, offering a smaller selection of beers with a core four that remained the same: an amber, a blonde, an IPA and a stout. Bonus: The core-four beers were all easy drinking everyday options.
Because of its no-fuss beer, its homey and rustic indoor-outdoor digs and its family first vibe, 4J felt more like a neighbor’s backyard barbecue. For Spring Branch drinkers and plenty of Houston beer lovers, that made 4J a popular spot.
4J’s closing is the most

USA, NY: Water Street Brewing Co. closes its doors in Binghamton
|
Downtown Binghamton business Water Street Brewing Co. has closed its doors, PressConnects.com reported on February 5.
The brewery and restaurant was open for 12 years, according to a farewell message posted on the business' Facebook page in late January, in which the owners expressed gratitude for the experiences shared at events over the years, and hope for the future.
"Thanks to all who have supported us over these many years. It has been an exciting — if tumultuous — journey, and we could not have made it this far without the overwhelming support of our community," read the statement. "Though we’re saddened by the end of this chapter, we are happy to have the opportunity to have followed our creative passion and are looking forward to what’s next."
The post did not explain the reason for the closure, but said "it is with heavy hearts that we’re announcing that we have brewed our last beer at Water Street."
During its run on Water Street, the business has featured a casual brewpub fare with handheld sandwiches and entrees, and over a dozen craft beers on tap.
Water Street Brewing Co.'s liquor license was suspended, then restored, in the spring of 2020 following accusations the downtown craft

UK: Heineken UK launches new low-alcohol beer Foster’s Proper Shandy
|
Heineken UK has launched a new low-alcohol beer. The new reference is part of the Foster’s range and is called Foster’s Proper Shandy, EFA News reported on February 7.
The launch was planned to help retailers take advantage of the trend of "macro-consumption to nostalgia", offering a British classic like shandy beer, that is mixed with lemonade or ginger, in a convenient format. According to Kantar, an English data and legal advice company, about 40% of adults want to moderate their alcohol consumption: Proper Shandy, stresses Heineken, was designed to satisfy these consumers with an ABV of less than 3%.
With the top shandies and lagers accounting for 4.5% of all consumptions in the horeca sector -we talk about more than 193 million pints, according to Heineken- Foster’s Proper Shandy aims to provide consumers with a quality shandy service at home since it is sold in multiple packs of four or ten cans of 440 ml. The launch of the new beer also marks what Heineken calls the "first innovation for decades in the category of classic lagers, with the aim of encouraging exploration by consumers".
"Foster’s is a well-known and reliable brand,” explains Richard Barnes, marketing manager at Foster’s at Heineken

Russia: Ministry of Agriculture announces new barley, wheat export duties
|
Starting February 7, 2024, Russia's Ministry of Agriculture has declared that the export duty on wheat will be set at 3,804.6 rubles ($41.82) per metric ton. Simultaneously, the export duty for barley is established at 827 rubles ($9.1) per metric ton, and for corn, it is fixed at 1,339.8 rubles ($14.73) per metric ton, as outlined by the Ministry.
These duty rates are calculated based on specific indicative prices per metric ton. For wheat and meslin (a combination of wheat and rye), the indicative price stands at $251.1 per metric ton, while for barley, it is set at $190.9 per metric ton, and for corn, it is determined at $199.1 per metric ton.
The implementation of a floating duty on Russian grain exports dates back to June 2, 2021. Under this system, the Ministry of Agriculture assesses the duty amount on a weekly basis, and the calculated fees are subsequently published on the ministry's website. It's worth noting that duties were initially calculated in dollars until July 1, 2022, after which they were converted into rubles.
This dynamic approach to export duties reflects the fluctuations in global grain markets and allows the Russian government to adapt swiftly to changing economic conditions. The transparency

Turkey & Russia: Turkey and Russia to discuss new mechanism to allow Ukrainian grain exports through the Black Sea
|
Turkey and Russia will weigh in on a new mechanism to allow Ukrainian grain exports through the Black Sea when their two leaders meet in the coming days, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said on February 4.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to visit Turkey on Feb. 12 to meet President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, a Turkish official previously said, in what will be the Russian leader's first trip to a NATO ally since Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
There are efforts to find "new methods" to transport Ukrainian grain to the world markets, Fidan said in an interview with private A Haber television.
"The previous grain deal worked within a certain mechanism, now it has been seen that there is a possibility of going with a different mechanism, and now there are efforts to concretize this possibility," Fidan said, adding that Erdoğan will raise this issue in his meeting with Putin in Turkey.
Ankara has sought to persuade Russia to return to the Black Sea Grain Initiative, which Moscow pulled out of in July 2023, a year after it was implemented. The accord was brokered by the United Nations and Türkiye to provide safe passage to exports from Ukrainian ports.
