Canada: Building of Diageo’s new distillery not yet started
|
Building of Diageo's Crown Royal Canadian whisky distillery in St. Clair Township, Ontario, has not yet started, GlobalData reported on March 5.
The beer and spirits giant first announced its plans to build a new facility for the Crown Royal brand in March 2022.
At the time, the company said construction was due to start later that year and would be complete by 2025.
The site however shows no signs of building work having started, according to regional paper, The Sarnia Journal.
Speaking with the publication, the mayor of St. Clair, Jeff Agar, said Diageo executives had told him "three or four months ago" they had needed to draft a new site plan.
"I get asked all the time if they are still coming and they are 100% going to do what they said they are going to do," he said.
John Rodey, the chief administrative officer of St. Clair Township, told the paper officials had told him they intended to start construction in the first half of this year, starting with the building of a 100-square feet barrel storage unit.
He added that St. Clair had received a preliminary design of the site but a final draft had not yet been issued.

USA, PA: CoStar Brewing officially open in Etna
|
It’s been a long time coming, but CoStar Brewing is now officially open in Etna, Good Food Pittsburgh reported on March 2.
Co-owner Dominic Cincotta, who has been brewing beer for more than a decade, first started home brewing out of a garage in Highland Park. Eventually, CoStar brews made it into bars and restaurants throughout Pittsburgh, and Cincotta and his business partners began looking for land to build their own taproom, and expand the brewery.
“We purchased the land seven years ago, so it’s been in the works for quite awhile,” says CoStar cofounder Dominic Cincotta. “The Etna Borough Council actually owned one of the lots that we bought, and reached out to us to suggest this spot. We started construction about a year ago.”
The now-open Butler Street taproom and brewery is a 2,400-square-foot open-span building, with a minimalist design.
“We wanted to incorporate design ideas from breweries and taprooms from around the country that we really loved,” Cincotta says. “Our brew system is open to the taproom, not enclosed in another space or behind a wall, so you sit right there with the tanks and can see what’s happening.”

Belgium & USA: Ransomware forces Duvel Moortgat to halt production
|
Belgian brewer Duvel Moortgat fell victim to ransomware, Techzine Europe reported on March 6.
The company subsequently decided to halt production of well-known beer brands such as Duvel, La Chouffe, Liefmans, De Koninck and Maredsous as a precautionary measure. Specifically, this involved four Belgian breweries and a brewery in America, where subsidiary Boulevard Brewing is located.
Duvel Moortgat noticed the ransomware attack during the night of Tuesday, March 5 to Wednesday, March 6. “At 1:30 a.m. last night, we received notification that our servers had been hacked,” said company spokesperson Ellen Aarts. During the hack, cybercriminals encrypted data.
The brewer says it does have the necessary backups in place. Production is, therefore, expected to resume as early as this week. Furthermore, it expects no shortages and therefore, supply will not be compromised: “We still have large stocks of beer.”
The brewer is now investigating the exact extent of the attack. Because even if production can run again through backups, it is important to check whether the hackers were able to steal sensitive information. Duvel Moortgat can then still decide to pay a ransom so that the hackers do not publish the sensitive data. So, paying ransom to resume production appears to be unnecessary

USA, TX: Three Wide Brewing comes to Fort Worth
|
A funky new brewpub offering craft beer with a “West coast feel” is about to open in far north Fort Worth. Called Three Wide Brewing, the taproom and restaurant will open at 16230 Three Wide Dr., west of I-35 and north of 114, with an opening set for March 2, Culture Meeting Fort Worth reported on March 1.
The concept was founded in 2020 by engineer-turned-brewmaster Matt Morriss, a Fort Worth native, but the COVID-19 pandemic derailed the company from opening until now.
Many breweries on the West coast focus on a more expansive taproom experience, which Morris wanted to emulate in Fort Worth.
“While we are a fully functioning distribution brewery, it’s much more of a grand experience than what you’ll see at a lot of other brewery taprooms in the area,” he says. “That’s the feeling that we wanted to bring to our Texas beers.”
The space feels like a sports bar, with a large, airy indoor dining area with plenty of screens to watch the games, plus an upstairs loft with additional seating. There’s also an outdoor patio, to test the company’s claim that “beer tastes better outside.”

USA, OH: Royal Docks Brewing Company expanding to Cleveland
|
In a couple of months, Stark County-based brewpub chain Royal Docks Brewing Company plans to expand to Cleveland by opening a location in Ohio City’s booming Hingetown neighborhood. Ohio City is a community with a half-dozen brewpubs already in operation. But with their planned Royal Docks Tied House + Kitchen, the proprietors are confident they can offer something the others don’t, NEOtrans reported on March 1.
Their leased site, at Detroit Avenue and West 28th Street, is where Columbus-based North High Brewing Co. tried to make a go of it but abruptly closed its doors in September 2023 after just two years in business. The location, a 5,217-square-foot space at 2814 Detroit Ave., is owned and managed by COhatch Ohio City, a coworking space that offers offices and other workspaces.
Royal Docks Brewing will invest $350,000 to remodel the space with a restaurant and taproom. When they open in May, the brewpub intends to hire 26 team members, said CBRE First Vice President Kevin Moss who helped Royal Docks find the right space for the nine-year-old company that now has three locations near Canton in Stark County and is looking for more in Northeast Ohio.

USA, PA: Broken Goblet Brewing & the Mutual Respect Brewery Collective open a distillery
|
Broken Goblet Brewing & the Mutual Respect Brewery Collective have added a few more pieces to the mix: a distillery, and a new taproom, Breweries in PA reported on March 1.
“The Mixing Room” is now open full-time and is located directly next door to the brewery. This new 6,000 sq/ft space houses the brand-new distillery, a kitchen, and a new taproom.
We spoke with Kate Sweeney, co-owner of Broken Goblet, to learn more about the space.
The space used to be Key Spirits and a pizza restaurant until Covid and both closed. It was dormant until Broken Goblet took it over, and has been working on it since. The space will be occupied by the Mutual Respect Brewery Collective made up of Broken Goblet Brewing, Trauger Brewing, Lucky Cat Brewing Company, and the soon-to-be-revealed new distilling brand.
Once the distillery is up and running, fans of Mutual Respect will be able to purchase their spirits as well as some other PA-based liquors. The plan is to start with clear spirits – vodka, Gin, and White Rum – and then eventually get into aging spirits, and potentially canned cocktails down the road.

USA: AB InBev reaches agreement with Teamsters union in the US
|
The Teamsters union said on March 5 its members approved a five-year agreement with Anheuser-Busch InBev, ratifying a deal that includes pay hikes and improved healthcare for workers at the brewer's U.S. facilities, Yahoo Finance reported.
Anheuser-Busch InBev and the Teamsters union had reached a tentative agreement last week that averted a strike.
Under the agreement, which covers 5,000 Teamsters working at Anheuser-Busch breweries in the United States, union members will receive wage increases of $8 an hour, including an immediate $4 an hour raise in the first year, the union said.
The contract also includes a $2,500 ratification bonus, increased pension contributions, and restoration of retirement benefits for active and retired members.

Vietnam: Vietnam halts mixed tax proposal on beer, alcohol
|
In a significant shift, the Vietnamese Government has decided against implementing a mixed tax regime on beer and alcohol products, adhering to WTO commitments and the Prime Minister-approved tax system reform strategy. This move, detailed in Resolution No 25/NQ-CP, aligns with the broader aims of the amended Law on Special Consumption Tax, BNN Breaking reported on March 3.
Following concerns from businesses and experts over the proposed tax calculation method changes, the Government's decision has been widely welcomed. The proposed amendments had sparked a debate on the most equitable and effective tax structure for beer and alcohol products, with the absolute tax method previously favored for its simplicity. UK: Asahi closing Meantime Brewery in Greenwich
|
Asahi is closing Meantime Brewery in Greenwich and will move brewing of its Meantime and Dark Star beers to its Fuller’s site in Chiswick, The Drinks Business Review reported on March 6.
Speaking about the decision, a spokesperson for Asahi said: “Asahi UK today proposes to bring production of all its local beer brands together under one brewing operation at the Griffin Brewery in Chiswick. Under the proposal, all Meantime and Dark Star products will be brewed, packaged, and distributed from the historic site in West London, alongside the existing production of the complete Fuller’s beer portfolio.”
The spokesperson highlighted that “beer has been brewed on the original Chiswick site since the 17th century” and insisted that “the addition of Meantime and Dark Star to the site will be mutually beneficial to both the Chiswick site and all the brands produced there”.

Kazakhstan & Russia: Carlsberg's unit in Kazakhstan appeals Russian court ban on Baltika sales
|
Carlsberg's unit in Kazakhstan has filed an appeal with a Russian court after the Danish brewer was banned from selling the Baltika beer brand of its former Russian partner in some international markets, Reuters reported citing court documents.
Moscow took control of Carlsberg's stake in Baltika, Russia's largest brewer, in July 2023 and placed it under "temporary management", prompting Carlsberg Group CEO Jacob Aarup-Andersen to say its business had been stolen.
At the time, Baltika signed agreements transferring trademark rights to Carlsberg entities abroad, without the involvement of the newly-appointed company president Taimuraz Bolloev, the Vedomosti newspaper reported.
On Jan. 24, a court in St Petersburg revoked intellectual property rights for Carlsberg to use Baltika brands in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Ukraine, Tajikistan, Mongolia and Turkmenistan.
That decision came soon after Baltika's first vice president, Alexander Dedegkaev, had appealed to the Kremlin for help.
Carlsberg Kazakhstan appealed against the court's ruling on March 1, court documents showed.
Carlsberg declined to comment on the court filings.
"We are continuing to take all possible actions, including legal, to protect our employees, assets and operations in response to the presidential decree from 2023," a spokesperson for the company said on March 4.

Kazakhstan: Barley and wheat production 2023-24 expected to go down due to unfavourable weather
|
June drought followed by excessive rain in fall 2023 in Kazakhstan’s major grain growing region in the north is expected to severely cut the country’s wheat and barley production in marketing year 2023-24, according to the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) of the US Department of Agriculture.
In its Feb. 28 Global Agricultural Information Network (GAIN) report, the FAS lowered its wheat 2023-24 harvest estimate for the Central Asian nation to 12.1 million tonnes, down 26% from the previous year’s 16.4 million tonnes. Barley production is forecast at 2.6 million tonnes, a decrease of 20% from 3.3 million tonnes.
“Wheat and barley quality are reported as significantly compromised, leading to a surplus of feed grade grain,” the FAS said. “While strong competition from Russia and lower milling quality has negatively impacted exports of wheat from Kazakhstan, barley exports have been supported by strong feed demand from new market entrant China.”
According to the industry representatives, only 21% of wheat in Kazakhstan from the current year qualifies as food grade, with 29% qualifying as feed grade and half of all wheat tested as nonclass. Barley quality likewise was hurt by the weather, and testing showed higher-than-normal presence of mycotoxins and aflatoxins.

Australia: Craft beer industry in trouble after ‘alarming rate’ of closures
|
After a decade-long craft beer boom, more than a dozen independent breweries across Australia have been pushed to the brink of insolvency in the past 12 months, The Sydney Morning Herald reported on March 1.
Some, like Red Lion Brewery in regional Victoria, have shut up shop entirely. Others, like Wayward Brewing Company in Sydney, have pushed on with a restructuring plan, cutting up to a third of their workforce to break even. And still more await their fate, like Melbourne-based brewery Hawkers.
After going into voluntary administration with $1.7 million of unpaid tax debt on February 12, the “fiercely independent” brewery faces a March 6 ASIC hearing to determine its future.
Hawkers co-founder Mazen Hajjar is frustrated as he describes the “all-out assault” on the industry since the end of the pandemic.
Many challenges, like slowed consumer spending (down 10.2 per cent between December and January) and inflated prices for electricity and transportation, are not unique to craft brewers.
“But many are,” Hajjar says. Beyond the rising cost of key ingredients like malt and hops (each up around 50 per cent since 2020), there are costly regulatory requirements and, most significantly, a hefty alcohol (excise) tax which rises bi-annually alongside inflation.

Brazil: Beer prices remain more stable in January
|
Brazil’s beer prices remained more stable in January than other alcoholic beverages, which saw an increase due to inflation, FreshlyBottled.com reported February 26.
According to the National Statistics Institute (IBGE), the price adjustment was 0.3 percent for drinks consumed at home and generally sold in retail outlets, while outside the home, in establishments such as bars and restaurants, it reached 0.34 percent.
The IBGE highlights that beer inflation was below the National Consumer Price Index (IPCA), which recorded an increase of 0.42 percent in January 2024, regardless of the place of purchase.
However, in Rio de Janeiro, beer recorded the largest price increase in January, due to inflation of 2.8 percent in bars, while São Paulo experienced deflation of 1.83 percent. Retail prices in the Brazilian capital rose by 1.36 percent.
Beer-related inflation in January differed from the behavior of the rest of the beverage sector in general, which rose by 1.38 percent, the largest increase since 2016.

India: Beer makers rue tax hike in Karnataka
|
Karnataka, housing India’s beer capital Bengaluru, has levied two consecutive additional excise duty (AED) hikes on beer over the past seven months. The levy is resulting in consumers shifting to high strength alcohol beverages, industry players rue. Beers makers are demanding state to reconsider the taxation levied on the premium beer segment that contributes more excise revenue to the state, The Hindu Business Line reported on March 5.
The state has recently levied a 10 per cent increase in additional excise duty (AED), raising it from 185 - 195 per cent AED for the beer industry. This adjustment translates to a rise of ₹8-10 per 650 ml bottle of beer. This continuous escalation of taxes to the already elevated cost of beers in Karnataka, is nudging them to cheaper high strength alcohol beverage options, argues the industry.
“The beer industry in Karnataka has witnessed strong double-digit growth in 2023 and despite this, the beer industry witnessed two consecutive tax hikes in the last seven months. Beer in Karnataka is one of the most expensive in the country, shifting consumers towards cheaper high strength alcohol beverage alternatives,” said AB InBev India spokesperson.
