Malaysia: Heineken, Carlsberg beer prices to go up by 5% from April 1
|
The price of beer produced by Heineken Malaysia Bhd and Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd will increase by around 5% from April 1, according to a report by Sin Chew.
It quoted Petaling Jaya Coffeeshop Association chairman Keu Kok Meng as saying that retailers had received an official notice on the matter from the two brands.
“We were informed about the matter three weeks ago,” he reportedly said.
Keu said the decision was made due to increasing operational and ingredient costs, and that the last time beer prices were raised was in July 2022, by about 6%.
He said the impending price hike for beer would impose a heavier burden on coffee shops than increases in other essentials such as coffee and tea powder, electricity and water bills, and sugar.
“There is only so much we can bear. Retailers like coffee shops have no choice but to raise our own prices,” he said.
The owner of a bar in Petaling Jaya also confirmed the matter to FMT.
Heineken Malaysia produces Heineken, Tiger Beer, Guinness, Strongbow, Apple Fox, Anchor, Kilkenny and Edelweiss, among others, while Carlsberg Malaysia’s products include Carlsberg, 1664, Somersby, Connor’s, and Skol.
FMT has reached out to Heineken Malaysia and Carlsberg Malaysia for comment.

France: Winter barley crop rating drops, soft wheat rating stable this week
|
The state of French soft wheat crops remained stable last week, although still at their worst in four years, data from farm office FranceAgriMer showed on March 29.
Some 66% of French soft wheat was rated as being in good or excellent condition by March 25, unchanged from the previous week but down from 94% a year earlier, FranceAgriMer said in a cereal report.
The rating was the lowest for the time of year since 2020, when French wheat crops were affected by heavy rain during planting.
Wet weather since autumn has disrupted planting and early crop development in France, the European Union's biggest grain producer, and other parts of western Europe.
The European Commission this week forecast that the European Union's main wheat crop will fall to a four-year low in 2024/25 due to a drop in the planted area.
Meanwhile, EU crop monitoring service MARS said winter grain crops were in mediocre condition in large parts of the bloc.
FranceAgriMer estimated that winter barley conditions were also at their poorest since 2020, with 67% of crops rated good/excellent, down slightly from 68% the previous week and 71% when FranceAgriMer resumed its ratings mid-February.
Spring barley sowings accelerated after a slow start, with 82% of the

Canada: Southern Alberta seeing slight increase in feed barley prices
|
Southern Alberta is seeing a slight bump up in feed barley prices, according to one trader.
Evan Peterson of JGL Commodities in Saskatoon said recent export sales of the grain have resulted in increased prices. He also said grain elevators have been more aggressive in barley purchases of late, Canadian Cattlemen reported on March 27.
“It is pushing prices up in southern Alberta, kind of from the lows of C$270 (per tonne) back up to probably C$300 delivered for April, May and June moving forward,” Peterson added.
He also explained that corn and barley prices are at near-parity.
“You’ve seen corn futures at US$4.40 per bushel, coming off the lows of US$4.00 per bushel, which is now putting corn at the same value as barley,” Peterson added.
Dry conditions on the Prairies are currently at the forefront of growers’ minds with many of them reluctant to forward price feed grains. However, heavy snowfall in parts of southern Alberta as well as central and southern Saskatchewan nearly a month ago have eased concerns.
“I think snow pack levels are getting a little bit better. Although I think we’re going into spring with below-average soil moisture,” Peterson said.
However, warmer temperatures are fast approaching as forecasts in the southern

UK: Beam-Suntory gets East Ayrshire approval for a new whisky maturation facility
|
East Ayrshire councillors have given the go ahead to a £150m whisky maturation facility, despite vociferous opposition from people living and working near the site.
Beam-Suntory, the Japanese company which took over US whiskey giant Jim Beam and produces well known Scottish Whiskies, Laphroig and Ardmore. sought approval for the facility, which would hold up to half a million barrels of spirits at any one time.
Seven objectors were at East Ayrshire Council headquarters to make the case for refusing the application, focusing on the potential impact on the health and amenity of those living in the vicinity, and the environment, including the impact on the protected peatland.
Several questioned the assessment of the potential impact – particularly the issue of noise levels and of the risk around ethanol released through the barrels of whisky into the surrounding area – a process often described as the ‘Angels’ Share’.
However, planners pointed out that there had been no objections from the council’s Environmental Health team, SEPA, Ayrshire Roads Alliance or Naturescot.
Elliot Davis, who runs a hi-fi cabling company from the nearby B-Listed Kingswell Farm, claimed that he had correspondence between East Ayrshire Council’s Environmental Health service and the applicant, that a noise assessment would be
