Brewery news USA, FL: Big Top Brewing’s new massive facility in Sarasota to open in mid-April
Sarasota’s Big Top Brewing is about to get a major upgrade. Its new building, located on Fruitville Road east of I-75, is a whopping 18,000 square feet that’s equal parts beer garden, gastropub and beer production facility. It’s set to open in mid-April, the Sarasota Magazine reported on March 27.

“We started Big Top 10 years ago,” says co-owner Mike Bisaha, who shares the business with partners Seth Mauraskas and Josh Wilson. “Seth was my neighbor and was really into craft beer. We’d sit in the driveway and watch our kids run around. One day he suggested we sell our own beer, and he wasn’t kidding. I didn’t know the first thing about making beer, but Seth knew Josh, who’d been home brewing for more than 20 years before we got started. From the time that we first sat down to talk about it to opening the first facility only took eight months.”

Now, Bisaha says, Big Top is in a strategic growth phase. “We don’t want to be big [just] to be big—we want to make great beer.”

But the new building is definitely big, with a seating capacity for around 700. That includes a sizable AstroTurfed beer garden, shaded by two ...More info on site

Barley news Canada: Southern Alberta seeing slight increase in feed barley prices
Southern Alberta is seeing a slight bump up in feed barley prices, according to one trader.

Evan Peterson of JGL Commodities in Saskatoon said recent export sales of the grain have resulted in increased prices. He also said grain elevators have been more aggressive in barley purchases of late, Canadian Cattlemen reported on March 27.

“It is pushing prices up in southern Alberta, kind of from the lows of C$270 (per tonne) back up to probably C$300 delivered for April, May and June moving forward,” Peterson added.

He also explained that corn and barley prices are at near-parity.

“You’ve seen corn futures at US$4.40 per bushel, coming off the lows of US$4.00 per bushel, which is now putting corn at the same value as barley,” Peterson added.

Dry conditions on the Prairies are currently at the forefront of growers’ minds with many of them reluctant to forward price feed grains. However, heavy snowfall in parts of southern Alberta as well as central and southern Saskatchewan nearly a month ago have eased concerns.

“I think snow pack levels are getting a little bit better. Although I think we’re going into spring with below-average soil moisture,” Peterson said.

However, warmer temperatures are fast approaching as forecasts in the southern ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AR: Moody Brews opens in Little Rock’s Pettaway neighbourhood
After a long and well-documented odyssey, Moody Brews, the new brewery helmed by longtime Little Rock brewer Josiah Moody, has opened in downtown’s Pettaway neighborhood at 414 E. 21st St., the Arkansas Times reported on March 27.

Known for his time at Vino’s Brew Pub as well as partnerships with other breweries under the name Moody Brews, Moody has a reputation for making beers that are both technical and inventive. Situated in Pettaway Square alongside Pettaway Coffee, Paper Hearts bookstore, and the regular spot for the Smashed N’Stacked food truck, the Moody Brews taproom carries on the micro urban themes of the new small business commercial district spearheaded by local developer and Pettaway resident Michael Orndorff. There is a cozy bar area, a patio facing into the square, upstairs seating and an upstairs patio creating four separate spaces. The patios facing inward provide an escape from the usual design of a patio facing out to the street, creating a respite from the hustle and bustle of a busy, car-oriented culture.

Moody Brews has house-made ginger ale and root beer. These receive the same attention to flavor and detail, so expect unique and delicious experiences when you order one. The root beer is ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Spider Monkey Brewing Company to move into former R. Shea Brewing location
Spider Monkey Brewing Company will move into the Merriman Valley location formerly owned by now-closed R. Shea Brewing, the Akron Beacon Journal reported on March 29.

Joseph Scaccio, CEO of property owner J-RS Commercial Properties, said Spider Monkey signed the lease earlier in March.

Scaccio said more than a dozen people had expressed interest in the space since R. Shea owner Ron Shea announced in February his business’s early March closure.

“I didn't put a sign up. I didn't do anything,” Scaccio said. He added he was “disappointed” to hear about R. Shea’s closure.

Spider Monkey ownership did not immediately respond to the Beacon Journal’s requests for comment.

Scaccio said he had purchased the equipment in the space that formerly belonged to R. Shea, including the brewing equipment, sinks, coolers and refrigerators.

“It’s not going to take a lot of work to get [the space] back up and running,” Scaccio said.

Scaccio declined to share monetary terms of the lease but said it is for two units — downstairs and upstairs — and for multiple years.

On March 28, Northeast Ohio Craft Brewery News first reported the move.

The local craft beer news outlet had speculated on Facebook last week that Spider Monkey was going to move into ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Grand Rapids Brewing Company closing for good following fire
Grand Rapids Brewing Company, a brewery that has existed in various locations for over 130 years, has announced that its downtown Grand Rapids location will not be reopening.

GRBC was forced to close its doors to the public in February when a fire heavily damaged the HVAC and kitchen of the restaurant located at 1 Ionia Ave. SW. And Friday morning the restaurant announced that, while GRBC may pop up again somewhere else, it will not reopen the current location.

Many would argue that Grand Rapids becoming Beer City, USA began with the formation of Grand Rapids Brewing Company back in 1893. To fight back against bigger national brewers who were taking over the beer scene, six local breweries in Grand Rapids came together and opened GRBC.

The brewery was forced to cease production in 1920 due to Prohibition. When Prohibition ended, GRBC moved out of town.

The brewery made its return to Downtown Grand Rapids in 2012.

In a release posted on their website, Ned Lidvall, CEO of Project BarFly, the parent company of GRBC said,

“Downtown Grand Rapids has been our cherished home, where each pint represented craftsmanship, community, and resilience. Let’s raise a final toast to the memories and friendships made. To our ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VT: Hermit Thrush Brewery to close in April
A Vermont brewery well regarded for its specialty in making sour beers has announced it will close in April, the Burlington Free Press reported on March 29.

Hermit Thrush Brewery, named for the Vermont state bird, revealed March 27 on social media that its last day of operation will be April 7. Customers will be able to order packaged beer online and pick it up at the brewery’s location in Brattleboro through April 28.

“After nearly a decade of crafting unique and cherished sour beers, we are announcing the closure of our beloved Vermont brewery,” the social media post by Hermit Thrush reads. “From the outset, our journey has surpassed our wildest dreams, with our sours reaching corners and communities we only imagined when we began.”

Founded in late 2014 by Christophe Gagne and Avery Schwenk, Hermit Thrust built a reputation on sour, Belgian-inspired ales. The brewery’s Instagram account, as well as shirts employees sport at the High Street taproom, bear a slogan that seemingly aims to answer a new customer’s likely first question: “Yes, they’re all sour.”

The decade of the 2010s saw a great boon in the Vermont beer world, with breweries such as The Alchemist, Hill Farmstead and Lawson’s Finest ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, ME: Gneiss Brewing Co. to shut its doors after 10 years in business
Gneiss Brewing Co. in Limerick will be shutting its doors after more than 10 years in business, the Bangor Daily News reported on March 28.

Gneiss brewed its first batch of Gneiss Weiss in September 2013.

“Over the last 10 years, IPAs have dominated draft lists at taprooms and bars alike. The focus of Gneiss in that time was to offer something for everyone and offer people a chance to taste something other than the ‘juice bombs’ or ‘hoppy hazy’ beers,” Gneiss Brewing Co. said.

Over the last four years, Gneiss Brewing has suffered the hardships COVID brought to the hospitality industry followed by supply-chain shortages, inflation and employment challenges, according to the company.

“We have also dealt with numerous health issues that have left us with little help to operate and grow at the rate we wished we could. For those reasons and more, we have decided that in the best interest of our family, we will be closing Gneiss,” Gneiss Brewing said.

Its last day of business is still in the air. Gneiss’ tasting room hours are 12-6 p.m. Saturdays.

Gneiss is pronounced “Nice.” The “G” is silent.

Barley news France: Winter barley crop rating drops, soft wheat rating stable this week
The state of French soft wheat crops remained stable last week, although still at their worst in four years, data from farm office FranceAgriMer showed on March 29.

Some 66% of French soft wheat was rated as being in good or excellent condition by March 25, unchanged from the previous week but down from 94% a year earlier, FranceAgriMer said in a cereal report.

The rating was the lowest for the time of year since 2020, when French wheat crops were affected by heavy rain during planting.

Wet weather since autumn has disrupted planting and early crop development in France, the European Union's biggest grain producer, and other parts of western Europe.

The European Commission this week forecast that the European Union's main wheat crop will fall to a four-year low in 2024/25 due to a drop in the planted area.

Meanwhile, EU crop monitoring service MARS said winter grain crops were in mediocre condition in large parts of the bloc.

FranceAgriMer estimated that winter barley conditions were also at their poorest since 2020, with 67% of crops rated good/excellent, down slightly from 68% the previous week and 71% when FranceAgriMer resumed its ratings mid-February.

Spring barley sowings accelerated after a slow start, with 82% of the ...More info on site

Whisky news UK: Beam-Suntory gets East Ayrshire approval for a new whisky maturation facility
East Ayrshire councillors have given the go ahead to a £150m whisky maturation facility, despite vociferous opposition from people living and working near the site.

Beam-Suntory, the Japanese company which took over US whiskey giant Jim Beam and produces well known Scottish Whiskies, Laphroig and Ardmore. sought approval for the facility, which would hold up to half a million barrels of spirits at any one time.

Seven objectors were at East Ayrshire Council headquarters to make the case for refusing the application, focusing on the potential impact on the health and amenity of those living in the vicinity, and the environment, including the impact on the protected peatland.

Several questioned the assessment of the potential impact – particularly the issue of noise levels and of the risk around ethanol released through the barrels of whisky into the surrounding area – a process often described as the ‘Angels’ Share’.

However, planners pointed out that there had been no objections from the council’s Environmental Health team, SEPA, Ayrshire Roads Alliance or Naturescot.

Elliot Davis, who runs a hi-fi cabling company from the nearby B-Listed Kingswell Farm, claimed that he had correspondence between East Ayrshire Council’s Environmental Health service and the applicant, that a noise assessment would be ...More info on site

Brewery news Malaysia: Heineken, Carlsberg beer prices to go up by 5% from April 1
The price of beer produced by Heineken Malaysia Bhd and Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd will increase by around 5% from April 1, according to a report by Sin Chew.

It quoted Petaling Jaya Coffeeshop Association chairman Keu Kok Meng as saying that retailers had received an official notice on the matter from the two brands.

“We were informed about the matter three weeks ago,” he reportedly said.

Keu said the decision was made due to increasing operational and ingredient costs, and that the last time beer prices were raised was in July 2022, by about 6%.

He said the impending price hike for beer would impose a heavier burden on coffee shops than increases in other essentials such as coffee and tea powder, electricity and water bills, and sugar.

“There is only so much we can bear. Retailers like coffee shops have no choice but to raise our own prices,” he said.

The owner of a bar in Petaling Jaya also confirmed the matter to FMT.

Heineken Malaysia produces Heineken, Tiger Beer, Guinness, Strongbow, Apple Fox, Anchor, Kilkenny and Edelweiss, among others, while Carlsberg Malaysia’s products include Carlsberg, 1664, Somersby, Connor’s, and Skol.

FMT has reached out to Heineken Malaysia and Carlsberg Malaysia for comment.
