Brewery news World: Asahi sets 2040 as its ‘value chain’ net-zero target
Asahi Group Holdings has set 2040 as its “value chain” net-zero target as it tries to commit to the Paris Agreement’s global heating limit of 1.5°C, bringing forward its net-zero deadline by ten years from a previously stated 2050, Global Data reported.

The net-zero goal targets have been set according to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), which covers all emissions including scope one, two and three.

Scope one and two covers direct company emissions from production and building energy usage. While three - the harder to manage - encompasses emissions produce by third parties and a group's supply chain.

“What we are facing is bigger than us,” Asahi Group Holdings CEO Atsushi Katsuki said. “Therefore, we need to engage with others to serve the greater good to achieve net zero across our value chain by 2040.

“We will continue innovating and fostering sustainable partnerships, because we are fully aware of the positive impact we can have together.”

The Japanese brewer said it was already working with suppliers and partners to reduce its scope 3 emissions by developing “innovative technologies” with industry and scientific studies.

In May, the soft drinks arm of Asahi Group launched a trial of vending machines in Japan capable of absorbing CO2 ...More info on site

Brewery news Malaysia: Price hike by Carlsberg and Heineken likely to result in alleviated operational cost pressure, analysts say
The hike in prices by local breweries Heineken Malaysia Bhd and Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd will likely result in alleviated operational cost pressure, say analysts, The Star reported on April 1.

“Based on our channel checks, Heineken and Carlsberg Malaysia will be raising product prices by 5% to 8% effective April 1, for on-trade channels and May 1, for certain aluminium can products in off-trade channels.

“Both brewers cited growing internal cost pressure from elevated input costs and weakening ringgit to dollar foreign exchange as reasons for the price increase,” said Maybank Investment Bank (Maybank IB) Research, in a report.

The research house said Heineken and Carlsberg Malaysia had not raised product prices since the second half of 2022.

With ongoing inflationary cost pressures, the research house said both companies have experienced negative volume growth in the financial year 2023 (FY23).

It said Heineken saw a decline of 8%, while Carlsberg Malaysia registered a dip of more than 10% in FY23.

Higher prices will be a reprieve from prolonged pressure on operating margins for both breweries, but this may come at the expense of sales volume growth in the medium term.

“This is especially when consumers are still reeling from lower disposable income and potentially negative effects ...More info on site

Brewery news World: Deutsche Bank increases Constellation Brands’ share price target on improved beer segment
On Tuesday, April 2, Deutsche Bank adjusted its outlook on Constellation Brands, a leading beverage alcohol company, by increasing the share price target to $262 from the previous $256. The firm has also reaffirmed its Hold rating, Investing.com reported.

The adjustment comes as Constellation Brands prepares to report its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings next week. Deutsche Bank cited several factors influencing their revised forecast, including expected headwinds from less favorable weather conditions in January and February, which may have impacted beer consumption. Consequently, the bank has slightly lowered its beer shipments and depletion forecasts.

Despite these potential challenges, Deutsche Bank anticipates that Constellation Brands might benefit from improved productivity and a more manageable cost environment, which could help offset the lower beer shipment figures. In the wine and spirits division, estimates have also been reduced due to ongoing softness in the category.

Looking ahead to the fiscal year 2025, Deutsche Bank expects Constellation Brands to guide towards a year of growth in line with its long-term algorithm for the beer segment. This optimism is based on anticipated gains in shelf space and improved product velocity, assuming more favorable weather conditions. However, the wine and spirits business is projected to fall short of longer-term goals, ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan: Sapporo opens first brewery in Tokyo’s Ebisu in 35 years
Sapporo Beer opened Yebisu Brewery Tokyo on April 3, a brand experience center with brewing facilities in Tokyo’s Ebisu district, the birthplace of Yebisu Beer. This will be the first time in about 35 years that Sapporo Beer resumed operations in Ebisu, after stopping production there in 1988 due to the relocation of the factory, The Japan Times reported.

With no entrance fee, the new brewery will be located in the Yebisu Garden Place complex in Shibuya Ward. In the facility’s taproom, visitors will be able to enjoy about six types of freshly brewed beer from ¥1100 a glass, including "Yebisu Infinity," which is made by reselecting the yeast used at the Yebisu factory more than 35 years ago. Finger food will also be on offer at between ¥400 to ¥800 per plate.

There will also be an exhibition area with photographs and other materials related to the more than 130-year history of Yebisu Beer.

Visitors will also be able to visit the brewery, which has an annual production capacity of 130 kiloliters, and the potential to directly interact with Ryota Aritomo, the Chief Experience Brewer in charge of the brewing process.

Forty-five minute guided tours of the brewing process costing ¥1800 will also be ...More info on site

Brewery news Brazil: Retail beer prices remain stable in February
According to data published by Brazil’s National Institute of Statistics (IBGE), beer registered a deflation of 0.02 percent, while, in bars and restaurants, beer presented an inflation of 0.5 percent, Freshlybottled.com reported on March 26.

The average price adjustment index for beer in retail and bars in February was below the Consumer Price Index (IPCA), as well as in the food and beverage group, with a positive variation of 0.95 percent.

With other alcoholic beverages, however, the behavior was exactly the opposite: inflation of 1.06 percent at home and deflation of 1.06 percent outside the home. In the first two months of 2024, beer inflation in the country was 0.25 percent, while outside the home it was 0.84 percent. Other alcoholic beverages increased by 3.35 percent at home and 0.07 percent outside the home.

During the period from March 2023 to February 2024, beer at home accumulated an increase of 3.74 percent, below the 4.63 percent observed for the product outside the home.

Brewery news Ethiopia: BGI Ethiopia’s legal wrangling pile up
BGI Ethiopia’s legal wrangling pile up as the brewer adds a lawsuit from some of its largest distributors to the property sale saga with Purpose Black. Fourteen leading BGI distributors, accounting for nearly half of its network, accuse the company of a breach of contract by awarding their distribution market segments to new players, The Reporter Ethiopia said on March 30.

The distributors filed a legal suit in December 2023, seeking an injunction order on BGI’s new distribution contracts. The injunction has been granted.

“We have a two-year contract with BGI to distribute its products in market segments assigned to us,” said Sintayehu Gebresellassie, president of the distributors’ association. “Legally, we have a year and a half before BGI gets the window to decide whether to onboard new distributors or continue with us. But BGI has overridden the contract and started giving away our market to new distributors.”

The Reporter has confirmed BGI and the original distributors entered into a contract in July 2023. Members of the association have presented transaction receipts that indicate the new distributors contracted by BGI have already begun work in market segments assigned to their predecessors.

Attorneys representing BGI Ethiopia filed a request for a reversal of the injunction ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Molson Coors facing calls for a boycott
The beer brands under beverage company Molson Coors may soon get the Bud Light treatment, TheStreet reported on April 2.

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters is calling for consumers to boycott the company, which owns popular beer brands such as Miller Lite, Blue Moon and Coors Lite, amid March Madness season after it failed to reach an agreement with union workers over a wage increase.

Teamsters is representing about 420 workers at a Molson Coors’ brewery in Texas who have been on strike since Feb. 17 after the beverage company offered workers less than $1 per hour in wage increases when negotiating a new three-year contract.

Last week, after striking for 41 days, the union workers returned to negotiating with the company over a new contract where they were still unable to settle on an agreement. They were offered only an additional 5 cents per hour on top of the company’s original offer of a 99 cents per hour wage increase in February.

“Molson Coors brought in $12 billion last year, and they have the nerve to sit across from us at the bargaining table and offer workers who made them that money a nickel more in wages. We can’t even call this ...More info on site

Barley news Ukraine: Barley exports amount to 339,000 tonnes in March
Ukraine exported 339,000 metric tonnes of barley in March, among the largest monthly volumes this season, and is likely to keep exports stable in the coming months, a Ukrainian agricultural producer group said on April 2.

Ukraine is a traditional barley grower and exporter, shipping almost 2 million tons from July 2023 to April 2024.

"We can expect to export 200,000 tonnes in April and (another 200,000) in May. Ukrainian barley has become more competitive and is in demand from EU countries and Turkey," the Agrarian Council said in a statement.

The council said the main barley trade took place in Odesa Black Sea ports, where the notional price is about $145 a tonne.

"We predict that the price tag will rise by another $1 to $2 per ton this week," it added.

Ukrainian farmers have already started 2024 barley sowing, seeding 291,400 hectares as of March 29.

The agriculture ministry last month said it expected that the area sown to spring barley would rise to 943,000 hectares this year, up from 821,900 hectares in 2023.

WhiskyWhisky News Whisky

Whisky news Japan: The Japan Spirits and Liqueurs Makers Association brings in new definition of Japanese whisky
Japanese whisky is world-famous, often eye-wateringly expensive, and from Monday, April 1 will be more strictly defined in an industry push to deter foreign-made imposters, the Yahoo News Singapore reported on April 1.

Overseas demand has soared in recent years for the country's acclaimed whiskies, sending prices sky-high, especially for the rarer aged varieties.

But concern and confusion have also grown among producers and customers as beverages made elsewhere - and sometimes not even whisky - are marketed as "Japanese whisky".

So the Japan Spirits and Liqueurs Makers Association has brought in a new definition for the spirit, officially in use from April 1st following a three-year grace period.

To call their products Japanese whisky, makers must now use water sourced in Japan, and their whisky barrels must be stored in Japan for at least three years, among other rules.

Although violators will not face sanctions, manufacturers have hailed the new industry standard as a way to safeguard the image of their tipples worldwide.

"We believe this will further improve the reputation (of Japanese whisky) because it makes it easier for our international customers to distinguish it from other products," major producer Suntory told AFP.

Experts say Japan has around 100 distilleries, whose whisky has commanded increasing ...More info on site
