Singapore: Heineken’s Archipelago Brewery to close down
|
Singapore’s Archipelago Brewery is closing down brewing operations, the Asia Brewers Network reported on March 30.
The brewery, owned by Heineken subsidiary Asia Pacific Breweries (APB) Singapore, will continue to operate until June 30.
In a statement sighted by ABN, the brewery shared the closure is due to “evolving craft beer market realities and high operational costs” and that APB’s new strategy is to “streamline our portfolio, maximize value and re-invest in growing our core business”.
APB has undergone recent leadership changes, including appointing a new managing director, Reinoud Ottervanger, in August last year.
Singapore’s second oldest commercial brewery, Archipelago opened its doors in 1933 after German investors expanded brewing operations from the then-Dutch Indies to Singapore.
The brewery continued to operate during World War II. The Allies first seized it as an enemy asset, and production continued during the Japanese occupation.
After the war, regular brewing operations resumed, and Archipleago’s stable of beer brands—Anchor and ABC Stout among them—became popular and widely distributed in Singapore.
After the brand was retired in 1990 in favour of Asia Pacific Breweries, Archipelago was revitalised as APB’s craft brewing arm in 2006 by then-Anderson Valley brewmaster Fal Allen and experienced several years of growth in Singapore’s then-nascent craft beer market.

India: Excise officials raid United Breweries plant in Karnataka
|
Excise officials conducted a massive raid on the United Breweries (UB) manufacturing unit located in Nanjangud, under the Chamarajanagar Lok Sabha constituency, and seized liquor and raw materials amounting to ₹98.56 crores, Chamarajanagara excise deputy commissioner Naga Shayana said on April 4.
He said that the excise authorities on April 2 uncovered a cache of beer and raw materials, which were allegedly unlawfully stored and utilised within the premises. Among the confiscated items were ₹6.03 lakh worth of beer boxes, containing a whopping 66.16 lakh litres of beer stored in tanks, along with 6.5 lakh kilograms of raw material.
He further said the preliminary investigations have revealed that the manufacturing unit was allegedly involved in the illegal production and distribution of beer, with an intended destination identified as Kerala. It was uncovered that approximately 7,000 beer cartons had been surreptitiously stored on the premises, indicative of illicit activities aimed at circumventing legal regulations.
Shayana said, “We received information about the illicit storage of beer and that they were going to be shifted to Kerala soon. Immediately, we conducted a raid at the beer facility at UB and seized raw materials, cartons, and bottles. During interrogation, it was discovered that the company manufactured beer

Australia: Former Carlton & United Breweries CEO buys Australian craft beer and spirits firms
|
Former Carlton & United Breweries CEO Peter Filipovic has acquired Mismatch Brewing Company and 78 Degrees in a multi-million dollar cash deal, The Drinks Business reported on April 5.
The AU$7 million acquisition, which follows each of the Adelaide companies having been bought almost three years ago by Mighty Craft as part of a AU$47 million deal will now see the assets for each of the two subsidiaries transferred to a consortium named Mismatch Brewhouse Publicans led by Filipovic.
The company, which, according to local reports, was registered in late March, follows Filipovic’s other acquisitions when he picked up craft beer brand Jetty Road from Mighty Craft last year.
The $7.2 million cash deal reportedly includes the Mismatch and 78 Degrees brands, intellectual property, trading names, contracting arrangements, inventory, equipment and licences. The move follows Mighty Craft having acquired the two South Australian brands plus Hills Cider just under three years ago in a deal worth $47 million, an agreement that also included 75% ownership of the LOT.100 venue at Hay Valley in the Adelaide Hills.
This new deal is said to include the assignment of the leases for the Mismatch Brewhouse venue in Adelaide’s Whitmore Square, as well as the Mismatch and 78

Ukraine: Demand for Ukrainian barley continues to decrease
|
World demand for barley remains quite low, especially against the background of forecasts of increased production in the new season, so hopes for increased barley exports from Ukraine at the end of the season may not come true. In addition, Australia and Argentina increased barley deliveries to the world market, UkrAgroConsult reported on April 5.
China’s active purchase of Ukrainian barley in February and March led to an increase in purchase prices to increase exports. In March 2024, Ukraine exported 339,000 tons of barley, which is one of the highest monthly indicators of this season. In total, 1.963 million tons of barley were exported in 2023/24 MR, out of the 2.1 million tons predicted by the USDA, while last year 2.27 million tons were shipped on April 1. Analysts believe that in April-May, Ukraine will be able to export another 200-300 thousand t of barley due to increased demand from Turkey and EU countries against the background of low prices.
Prices for feed barley for delivery to Black Sea ports fell to $145-150/t or UAH 6,100-6,200/t compared to UAH 6,400-6,800/t in February, while prices for feed wheat, which is being bought by a much larger number of traders, reach 6700-6800 UAH/t. Processors
