Brewery news Ireland: Heineken to increase cost of its draught beers from 4 June
Heineken is due to increase the cost of its draught beers by 3%, or six cent per pint, The Journal reported on April 16.

The changes will come into effect from 4 June.

In a statement, a Heineken Ireland spokesperson said the move is “due to continued increases in underlying costs”.

As a result, the spokesperson said Heineken needs to “adjust our pricing on our draught products”.

Its products include Heineken, Birra Moretti, Orchard Thieves, Coors, Foster’s, Beamish, Murphy’s, as well as craft and variety beers including Cute Hoor, Paulaner, and Zywiec.

The spokesperson confirmed a list price increase of 3%, or six cent 6 cent per pint, will apply to its draught product range from 4 June.

The spokesperson added: “Despite our ongoing efforts to increase productivity and reduce costs, it is impossible for us to absorb all of the increased costs that we have been faced with, and therefore we need to adjust our pricing.”

Last month, international alcohol distributor Diageo announced a similar price hike.

Its draught beers, including Guinness, Harp, Carlsberg, Hop House 13, Smithwicks and Rockshore, will increase by six cent per pint from tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Guinness 0.0, the non-alcoholic version, will go up by 9c.

It’s the latest of a series of price increases ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Draught beer prices up 0.5% during the first quarter of 2024
Draught lager prices saw a 0.5% uptick during the first quarter of 2024, new data has revealed, the Morning Advertiser reported on April 18.

Analysis of data released earlier this week by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed a pint of draught lager increased by 2p, from £4.69 to £4.71, between January and March.

Year-on-year, prices jumped by 4.6% in March 2024, up from £4.50 in 2023.

However, this was the lowest annual increase of the quarter, the largest being in January, when lager costs soared by 10.8% year-on-year.

Previous data showed a 5.6% hike between February last year and this year, from £4.45 to £4.70.

When compared with pre-pandemic levels, draught lager prices were up by 28.6% from £3.66 in March 2019.

The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) national chairman Nik Antona told the MA: "The economic landscape continues to be a harsh environment for pubs, social clubs and brewery taprooms to withstand.

“The latest beer price increases will be unwelcome news to customers already being cautious with their cash throughout the cost-of-living crisis.”

In addition, Antona said while the data showed the lowest year-on-year increase during the quarter, this would be “little consolation” to operators who are “desperately counting their pennies”.

Conversely, draught bitter prices saw a ...More info on site

Brewery news Denmark: Carlsberg launches a series of super premium Alchemy Brews
Carlsberg announced on April 19 the launch of a series of six signature, super premium Alchemy Brews, developed and crafted at The Carlsberg Research Laboratory and sold exclusively at Home of Carlsberg.

The Alchemy Brews series is named after the brand’s innate curiosity and pursuit of brewing the best beer in the world through science. It’s a mantra that has been at the forefront of everything Carlsberg has done since J.C. Jacobsen founded the brewery in 1847, and the series represents over 150 years of brewing science.

The series takes you on a journey through six different beers, including a smooth, balanced, and refreshing wheat lager, a vinous, tannic, and slightly acidic ale, and a unique, elegant, and intriguing beer, which got the name The Rubedo.

Zoran Gojkovic, Brew Master at the Carlsberg Research Laboratory, explains the uniqueness of The Rubedo, which beer type is yet to be defined:

“As part of extensive research in speciality raw materials and new flavours, we started using our red barley, developed at Carlsberg Research Laboratory, several years ago. After testing the wide variety of yeasts and microorganisms, The Rubedo was finally created as a three-stage sequential fermentation process followed by bottle conditioning and méthode traditionalle, a process ...More info on site
