Denmark & Ukraine: Carlsberg to invest US$50.5 million in Ukrainian business
|
The Danish Carlsberg Group will invest about UAH 2 billion (approx. US$50.5 million) in Ukrainian business, Ukrainska Pravda reported on April 24 citing Carlsberg Ukraine’s press service following the results of a meeting of Carlsberg Group’s CEO Jacob Aarup-Andersen with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Carlsberg is one of the largest Danish investors in Ukraine, owns three breweries in the country and is one of the largest taxpayers, paying over UAH 3 billion (US$75.8 million) in taxes and fees annually.
"Your activity in the Ukrainian market is impressive. With your investments, you set an example for other partners and investors," Zelenskyy said during the meeting.
The president also expressed confidence that the cooperation between Ukraine and Denmark, based on mutual respect and common values, would develop further and grow stronger.
Aarup-Andersen also visited Kyiv brewery PJSC Carlsberg Ukraine, where a new production line was established last year, and expressed his gratitude to the Ukrainian counterparts for their resistance in the conditions of the war.
The press service of the company added that one of the key moments of the visit was signing the Memorandum on Deepening the Cooperation between Ukraine and Denmark, which opens new possibilities in such key sectors as trade, investments, energy, shipbuilding, and

South Africa: Craft brewing market blossoms into a mature and vibrant industry
|
Over the past decade, South Africa has witnessed a remarkable transformation in its craft brewing scene, IOL reported on April 22.
Craft brewing is differentiated from high-volume beer manufacture through the products it offers, predominantly boutique in nature, offering a variety of flavours and using high quality ingredients to produce a premium product.
Craft brewers interpret traditional beer styles using innovative ingredients and techniques to develop new styles.
Importantly, craft brewers, are majority South African-owned and operated.
What started as a niche market has now blossomed into a mature and vibrant industry, reflecting not just a change in consumer preferences but also a deep-rooted cultural shift towards appreciation for quality, variety, and innovation in beer.
This maturation of the craft brewing market is a milestone in South Africa's beer industry, as it shows an increased appetite for local flavours, craftsmanship, and community engagement.
It also shows how embedded craft brewers have become in their local economies and have become vital employers and job creators.
With just over 200 craft breweries there is hardly a region in South Africa without its very own local brewer. Whether you find yourself at Zwakala Brewery in the forests of Magoebaskloof, or at the Kimberley Diamond Brewing Company, or in the Garden

Russia: Russian government increases custom duty on beer imported from ‘unfriendly’ countries
|
The Russian government has increased the customs duty on beer imported from countries it considers "unfriendly," setting the new rate at approximately 11 cents per litre. Moscow says this move supports local beer producers. Meanwhile, a Russian politician has described this measure as a significant counter-sanction against Western countries, MSN.com reported on April 20.
The hike in the beer import duty, as reported by the state-run news agency TASS and citing the Ministry of Industry and Trade, raises the charge from 4 cents to about 11 cents per litre. "The decree also raises rates of customs duties on beer from unfriendly countries. In particular, the duty will grow from 0.04 euro at present to 0.1 euro per liter (10 eurocents). The share of these products in the general consumption structure is not above 5%," the statement detailed. The government officially endorsed this decision through a resolution.
In addition to beer, the tariffs on vermouth, sparkling wines, and other wines from these countries have been increased to 20 percent of the cost, but not less than $1.5 per litre, as disclosed by the independent newspaper Kommiersant.
Additionally, TASS revealed that import duties for certain goods, such as finished cocoa products, coats, wallpapers, and zippers

Malaysia: Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia confirms beer price increases starting this month
|
Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd, the locally-listed unit of the Danish brewer, confirmed the price increases for its beer products starting this month, The Edge Malaysia reported on April 24.
The company’s priority is to preserve margin, Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia managing director Stefano Clini told at a press conference after the company’s annual general meeting. The last time the company raised the prices of its beers was in 2022, he noted.
“There was a price increase,” Clini said. “The details, however, we cannot talk about.”
Last month, The Petaling Jaya Coffeeshop Association chairman Keu Kok Meng said retailers received official notices of the price increases from Carlsberg and Dutch rival Heineken by around 5%.
Carlsberg’s full-year net profit was rose 5.11% to a record high of RM333.24 million in the financial year ended Dec 31, 2023 (FY2023) against RM317.05 million a year ago, mainly in the absence of the RM21.6 million prosperity tax incurred last year.
Full-year revenue however declined 6.28% to RM2.26 billion compared with RM2.41 billion in FY2022, dragged by lower sales on the back of softer market sentiment and inflationary pressures.
At 2.40pm, the share price of Carlsberg rose six sen or 0.3% to RM18.46, bringing the brewer a market capitalisation of RM5.64 billion.

Montenegro: Montenegrin brewer Trebjesa records drop in net profit in 2023
|
Montenegrin brewer Trebjesa recorded a net profit of just under 550,000 euro ($533,900) in 2023, down from 1.3 million euro in 2022, local media reported.
The company’s revenue came in at 33 million euro last year, representing an increase of 11% on the previous year, media portal Investitor.me reported on April 22.
Trebjesa, based in Niksic, in central Montenegro, is part of North American brewing company Molson Coors and is the largest Montenegrin brewer. It had 212 employees at the end of last year, six fewer compared to 2022.
Molson Coors owns a license for the Niksic beer brand, which it produces in Apatin for the Serbian market and in Zagreb for the Croatian market, Investitor.me said.
