Thailand: AB Food & Beverages Thailand and Jebsen & Jessen expand malt distribution in Southeast Asia
|
Jebsen & Jessen Ingredients (JJING) and AB Food & Beverages Thailand (ABFT), a subsidiary of Associated British Foods, have forged a new partnership to expand malt distribution across Southeast Asia, FoodIngredientsFirst reported on May 13.
The move will see JJING, the ingredients business unit of diversified industrial conglomerate Jebsen & Jessen Group, serve as the primary distributor of ABFT’s malt products across the region, which spans Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines.
“This partnership marks a pivotal moment for us. With our legacy spanning over a century, we’re excited to take a significant step forward in our vertical integration strategy and expand our business upstream into the ingredients sector,” shares Ian Kavanagh, regional operations director of Southeast Asia at ABFT.
“The partnership with JJING will allow our high-quality malt products to be used for F&B formulations across the region and serve as a good foundation for us to unlock new avenues for innovation and drive growth.”
As ABFT ventures upstream into the ingredients sector in Southeast Asia, this partnership is expected to assist in providing high-quality malt products to F&B manufacturers in the region.
As part of the partnership, JJING — as the primary distributor — will tap into its extensive distribution network

UK: Beer up to an uncertain future as younger generation prefers other drinks
|
Beer is facing up to an uncertain future with just three in 10 consumers aged 18-24 reporting they ever imbibe it, according to a new survey by YouGov, The Grocer reported on May 10.
The survey, commissioned by the Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA) for its 2024 Craft Beer Report, shows how younger drinkers are eschewing beer in favour of wine and spirits.
Of the 2,000 consumers surveyed by YouGov, almost half (49%) said they ever drank beer, but this figure dropped down to 30% in the 18-24 age cohort.
Younger drinkers – the data showed – prefer spirits, wine and even cider, with 49%, 44% and 40% of respondents stating they consumed these drinks respectively.
“A dark cloud looms over UK brewing,” said Andy Slee, SIBA’s chief executive. “Only 30% of 18 to 24-year-olds claim to ever drink beer, with only a third of those doing so once a week.”
He added: “More creative brains than mine are best deployed on making our national drink more appealing to younger drinkers, and expect this to become more of a discussion in the years ahead.”
Other conclusions drawn from the SIBA report paint a more positive picture for small and independent brewers, however.

Kenya: Relief for beer makers after U-turn on daily tax payments
|
Kenya’s government has reviewed its demand on manufacturers of alcoholic drinks to remit taxes within 24 hours after widespread criticism of the policy shift, with firms such as East African Breweries Plc (EABL) partly blaming the change in law for drop in profits, Business Daily Africa reported on May 13.
Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u is seeking approvals from lawmakers to extend the period within which alcohol makers will remit taxes to five days from the time goods leave stores to distributors.
“Section 36 of the Excise Duty Act is amended in Subsection (1A), by deleting the words ‘twenty-four hours’ and substituting therefor the words ‘five working days’,” Prof Ndung’u wrote in the Finance Bill 2024, tabled in the National Assembly on May 7.
Amendments in the Finance Act 2023 had compelled alcohol manufacturers to remit excise duty to the Kenya Revenue Authority within a day after moving goods from stockroom.
That was a shift from the previous policy where the manufacturers of alcohol paid duty of the previous month on the 20th day of the following month, meaning the taxes were remitted monthly.
The new move, which comes into force next financial year if approved by legislators, will come as a slight relief to

Australia: Malting barley exports more than double in March this year
|
Australia exported 627,353 tonnes of barley and 100,734t of sorghum in March, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
Feed barley exports at 390,828t were down from 415,454t shipped in February, with China on 384,651t the destination for 98pc of the March volume.
Malting barley exports at 237,055t more than doubled over the month from 117,338t shipped in February.
China was also the major destination for malting barley exports on 185,299t, followed by Vietnam on 21,768t and Peru on 19,800t.
Sorghum volume also surged, almost doubling from 50,766t shipped in February, with China on 92,224t the biggest market, followed by Taiwan on 6850t and The Philippines on 1569t.
Flexi Grain pool manager Sam Roache said March barley exports delivered the expected recovery from the smaller February numbers, which were low due to Chinese New Year holidays and associated shutdowns.
“Malting barley shipments were high within this, as was the Chinese percentage of exports, which moved above 90pc for the first time in a few months.”
Mr Roache said exports of malting barley to South America, and also Vietnam, are expected to continue to October.
Total malting and feed barley shipments over April and May are tipped to continue at pace.
“We see strong shipments for

Kazakhstan: Barley crop expected to increase this year
|
Barley production will increase this season in Kazakhstan. Such data is provided by the US Department of Agriculture in its latest analytical report. The producers estimate the production volumes at 3.25 mln tons due to the higher yield forecast, UkrAgroConsult reported on May 13.
“In 2023/24 marketing year, the planted areas under barley are expected to change slightly compared to the previous year. Grain producers estimate the barley production in 2024/25 MY at 3.25 mln tonnes due to the higher yield forecast of 13 centners per hectare. Preliminary estimates from grain traders increase the yield forecast by 17%,” the document says.
Many farmers who grow barley reported their intention to continue sowing it in the next season, as there is a high demand for it from the domestic feed industry.
However, according to US analysts, plans for barley planting may be called into question due to the lack of available seeds on the market.
In 2024/25 MY, barley exports are estimated at 1.5 mln tonnes due to higher production prospects. This estimate is based on competitive export prices and traders’ expectations of sustained demand from China.
As the ban on imports of wheat by road, water and rail from the EAEU countries was extended for
