USA: Craft beer sales decrease 0.8% in 2023, analysis shows
|
According to the Chicago-based market research company Circana, during 2023, craft beer sales in the United States totaled €4.3 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 0.8 percent, with case sales falling of 4 percent. The year before, sales fell 4.7 percent and case sales fell 8.6 percent, FreshlyBottled.com reported on May 23.
Circana analyzed the sales data and also discovered which were the ten best-selling craft beer brands in 2023 and it was found that among the first places are several breweries from Colorado, California and Michigan, which shows that the western areas of The United States leads craft beer sales.
Breweries have focused their efforts on canned cocktails and RTDs with good results, although IPAs remain the top-performing style with a 46 percent volume share of the craft beer segment. The main driver of growth in the segment has been great-tasting complementary beers, such as New Belgium's Voodoo Ranger Juice Force Imperial IPA.

Nigeria: Leading brewers record N169.7 bln loss in Q1 2024
|
Nigeria's leading breweries faced a staggering combined loss of N169.7 billion (USD0.11 bln) in the first quarter of 2024, as reported by BusinessDay's comprehensive analysis of their financial statements. Rising interest rates and the ongoing devaluation of the naira inflicted significant financial strain on Champion Breweries Plc, Nigerian Breweries Plc, International Breweries Plc, and Guinness Nigeria Plc.
Compared to the same period last year, where Guinness Nigeria saw a profit of N1.84 billion, the first quarter of 2024 marked a substantial downturn. Foreign exchange losses further exacerbated the financial challenges, with International Breweries recording a loss of N162.2 billion, Nigerian Breweries with N72.85 billion, and Guinness Nigeria with N37.06 billion in Q1. Nosike Nwajide from Agusto &Co highlighted the weakened naira's impact on foreign debt obligations, intensifying the strain on profit margins.
The brewing sector's struggles reflect broader economic challenges, including low consumer spending attributed to inflation. Femi Egbesola, president of the Association of Small Business Owners of Nigeria, noted the depletion of consumer purchasing power, leading to prioritized spending and intensified market competition.
Uchenna Uzo from Lagos Business School highlighted diminishing household incomes in the face of accelerating inflation, contributing to decreased consumer demand for premium lagers. The evolving market dynamics, including

UK: Wet and wild spring expected to spark inflation-busting price rises on beer, barbecue meat, other summer favourites
|
The UK’s wet and wild spring will spark inflation-busting price rises on summer favourites including beer, barbecue meat, bread, pasta, salads and new potatoes, experts warn.
Vast swathes of farmland – still under water from storms earlier this year – have been hit by more heavy rain this month, devastating crops and leaving many farmers unable to put livestock out to graze.
Food supply experts Lynx Purchasing estimates that there could be price hikes of up to 8 per cent on in-demand produce, as a result of intense rainfall and flooding, dwarfing the headline inflation rate, which fell to just 2.3 per cent in April – down from 3.2 per cent in March and near the Bank of England’s 2 per cent target.
“Many crops, ranging from potatoes, carrots and salad to the wheat grown to make beer, have been delayed or damaged by the heavy rain, which has left large areas of agricultural land waterlogged,” said the report.
It predicts the year-on-year price increase for wheat, used for bread, pasta and pastry, to hit 8 per cent, while the cost of barley, needed by brewers for summertime ales and lagers, will jump by 7 per cent. The wholesale price of potatoes could jump

Albania: Microbrewers calling for tax relief
|
From January 1, 2023, after the implementation of the changes in Albania’s law "On excise duty", local craft breweries have been paying 110% more excise duty than before for 1 litre of beer produced, CAN reported on May 27.
The excise duty accounts for 40% of the total cost for these producers.
In order to survive, small breweries, according to the President of the Albanian Microbrewers Association Xhim Begeja, have increased prices, but at the same time have reduced the amount of production due to the competition of imported beers.
In total there are 10 small breweries in Albania, such as: Puka Beer, Pan, Dyst, Grandfather Beer, Gjallica Beer, Karabash Beer, Lushnjë Beer, Saraçi Beer, Altenberg Beer and Brahause Beer, which together produce about 3,000 hl per year .
For this reason, the association of microbreweries is asking the State Ministry for Entrepreneurship and Business Climate to exempt the 10 craft producers from the obligation to pay excise duty and the obligation to perform DSHA (declaration of advance payment of excise duty for any product that leaves the factory without the goods being sold yet), or fixed fee per reduced litre and exemption from the obligation to perform DSHA.

Cameroon: Cameroon Beverages Company launches new bottling line at its Bafoussam plant
|
Cameroon Beverages Company (SABC) announced on May 27 the launch of a new bottling line at its Bafoussam plant, Business in Cameroon reports.
According to the company, this line, set to begin operations in October, will have a capacity of 35,000 glass bottles per hour. The local subsidiary of the French group Castel specifies that this new line incorporates "all the latest technologies in online control and optimal bottling conditions."
The Bafoussam plant currently has a capacity of 1.49 million hectolitres (1.2 million hectolitres in glass and 290,000 hectolitres in PET, polyethylene terephthalate used to package carbonated beverages).
"The commissioning of this line... will allow the retirement of the aging chain 4 (after 36 years of loyal service) and will have a significant impact on quality and productivity: the glass capacity of the plant will thus increase to 1.6 million hectolitres with optimizations planned in beer production," explains the company, which holds an 80% market share in Cameroon.
This new production line is part of an investment plan implemented by the brewing company to increase production capacities at its Yaoundé, Douala, and Bafoussam plants, aiming to strengthen territorial coverage and ensure alignment between market demand and production capacity. It's worth noting that

Kenya: Heineken to pay Sh1.8bn to local distributor after losing appeal
|
The Court of Appeal has upheld a decision that awarded local distributor Maxam Limited Sh1.8 billion as special damages for loss of business after its distribution agreement was terminated by Dutch beer maker Heineken, The Star reported on May 28.
Justices Pauline Nyamweya, Abida Ali-Aroni and John Mativo said Heineken E.A and Heineken B.V should pay the monies after breaching the Kenya Distribution Agreement.
The Judges at the same time affirmed the High Court’s decision delivered in January 2016 declaring the notice of termination from Heinken as unlawful and unprocedural.
Heineken appealed the award slapped on it by High Court Judge James Makau in 2016 after terminating its distributorship agreement with Maxam Limited.
The company faulted the Judge’s decision for failing to consider the terms of the distributorship agreement, adding that the award of damages was excessive.
At the same time, the company said the Judge was also wrong to find that the distributor had a legitimate expectation that the agreement would not be terminated.
The beer maker had appointed Maxam as its exclusive distributor of Heineken products in Kenya with effect from 1st May 2013.
In a rejoinder to the appeal, Maxam Ltd through its advocate Philip Nyachoti said the supposed termination notice dated January 27,

Canada, ON: Ontario introducing sales of beer, wine, and cocktails into corner stores
|
Ontario is introducing sales of beer, wine and ready-made cocktails into corner stores and additional supermarkets 16 months ahead of schedule, a move that will see the province pay up to C$225 million to The Beer Store, CBC reported on May 24.
Retailers, including convenience stores and gas stations, will be able to start selling the low-alcohol beverages as of Sept. 4. The process for applying for a licence from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) will open on June 17, the province says.
Similarly, the 450 grocery stores provincewide that already have licences for beer and wine will be allowed to sell ready-to-drink cocktails on Aug. 1.
All other supermarkets and grocers will then be able to sell beer, wine, cider and canned spirit drinks as of Oct. 31.
The retail locations participating in the government's expansion of where alcohol will be available for purchase will be able to sell packs of beer of any size, including 30 packs. They will also be able to set their own prices, though the province has regulated minimums.
Premier Doug Ford and Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy announced the impending changes at a news conference in Etobicoke on May 24.
"It was just a few months ago

Belgium: Carlsberg opens ‘immersive’ Grimbergen Experience in Belgium
|
Carlsberg has opened an “immersive” visitor’s experience for its Belgian beer brand Grimbergen in the grounds of the abbey where it is made, The Drinks Business reported on May 28.
The opening of the “Grimbergen Experience” sees Grimbergen’s 900-year history brought to life in a “newly expanded multi-sensory experience” that “charts the story of the Grimbergen Abbey Fathers’ who, to this day, continue the brewing legacy”.
The Grimbergen Experience marks the culmination of a six-year journey and multi-million-euro investment by Carlsberg that has also included the refurbishment of the site’s Fenikshof bar and restaurant.
Speaking as he officially opened the new extension, Carlsberg Group CEO Jacob Aarup-Andersen said: “Grimbergen is at the very heart of Carlsberg’s premium brands portfolio and is contributing significantly to the continued growth we are seeing in this category.”
The launch coincides with the release of “1128 by Grimbergen”, a new visual identity for the Abbey Brewery’s range that celebrates the year the Abbey was created and forms part of Carlsberg’s wider strategy to accelerate growth of its premium porfolio of which Grimbergen is a core part.
Carlsberg has said that the new premium identity introduces both the “Authentic Norbertine Product” logo and the signature of Fr. Karel Stautemas, Provisor of

EU: EU crop monitoring service raises barley yield forecast
|
The European Union crop monitoring service has trimmed its outlook for this year's EU soft wheat and rapeseed yields while upping its forecasts for barley and maize as good prospects in Spain and Portugal contrasted with adverse conditions elsewhere, the European Supermarket Magazine reported on May 28.
The EU is collectively one of the world's largest crop producers and is a significant exporter of wheat and barley while a major importer of maize and oilseeds.
Harsh weather in top wheat exporter Russia has unsettled grain markets in recent weeks, sending European prices to a one-year high, and increasing sensitivity to possible harvest setbacks in other major production zones.
'The yield forecast for winter crops further improved for Spain and Portugal, but was reduced for Italy and several countries of western Europe,' MARS said in a monthly report.
'Wet conditions in large areas in western Europe, as well as in Denmark, and northern Italy, resulted in waterlogging, high pest pressure and/or delays to sowing, with potentially negative effects on crop yields.'
MARS trimmed its forecast for the average soft wheat yield in the EU this year to 5.92 metric tonnes per hectare (t/ha) from 5.93 t/ha forecast in April, and lowered its projection of the bloc's
