Vietnam: Vietnam proposes to hike special consumption tax on alcohol to 100% by 2030
|
Vietnam’s Finance Ministry has proposed to hike a special consumption tax on alcoholic drinks to 100% by 2030, the ministry said, a move that may further hurt the country’s beverage industry, KFGO reported on June 13.
Under the draft proposal which is pending lawmakers’ approval, the special consumption tax on beer and strong liquor will be raised to 70%-80% by 2026 and gradually increase it to 90%-100% in 2030, compared with the current 65%.
“Alcoholic drinks and beer prices will increase by 20% in 2026, compared with 2025,” the finance ministry said in the proposal, adding that prices would continue to increase by 2%-3%, depending on inflation.
“Levying high tax rates is necessary to help reduce consumption of alcoholic drinks,” it added.
Vietnam’s beer industry has already been hit by the country’s strict drink driving law, under which the alcohol content limit for drivers is zero since 2019.
Last year, beer industry revenue decreased by 11% and profits decreased by 23%, according to estimations of the Beer – Alcohol – Beverage Association.
Shares in Sabeco, Vietnam’s largest brewer, fell by 3.96% on Friday morning after the ministry’s proposal.
The finance ministry also proposed a hike in special consumption tax on soft drinks and cigarettes.

Russia: Russian brewers counting on state support to compete with imported beer
|
Russian beer imports have been growing recently, so domestic brewers are counting on support through regulation of import duties, the president of United Breweries, Oraz Durdyev told Interfax on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.
"Imports now have just 10% of the market, which is not that significant of a share. But they have indeed been demonstrating growth recently. This can be explained by the fact that imported beer now essentially competes in price with domestic beer," Durdyev said.
Having the option to choose imported beer is "certainly good for consumers," but the impact that growing imports are having on the domestic market is concerning, he said.
"The situation on the beer market has barely managed to stabilize after all the restrictions and logistical problems. Russian businesses have begun to increase their competitiveness, invest in the development of local brands. And so that now these efforts do not turn out to be in vain and so that producers are motived to develop further, it is important to support brewers, including through regulation of import duty rates. The rate should be such that consumers still have a choice, but imported products do not hold back the growth of locally produced beer,"

Canada: Feed barley bids holding relatively steady in Western Canada
|
Feed barley bids are holding relatively steady in Western Canada, showing little movement over the past month as end users await the new crop amid relatively favourable growing conditions, Canadian Cattlemen reported on June 13.
Drought fears had encouraged some demand earlier in the year, but “now that those fears have been alleviated, (buyers) are starting to dig in,” according to a newsletter from Alberta grain brokers Agfinity, noting that while it is still early in the growing season “projections for this year’s crop are sound in most areas.”
Agfinity noted that new crop pricing is starting to become available at levels lower than old crop prices.
The monthly grains update from the United States Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service, released June 12, estimated Canadian barley production in 2024/25 at 9.6 million tonnes. That compares with the 8.9 million tonnes grown the previous year and would be about 100,000 tonnes above Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s current projection.
The USDA sees Canadian exports hitting 2.4 million tonnes in 2024/25, which would be up only slightly from the 2.3 million tonnes it expects for the current marketing year. However, with a larger domestic crop, the USDA forecasts Canadian domestic barley usage will rise to 7.4

France: Condition of soft wheat and barley crops improves in France
|
The condition of soft wheat and barley crops in France improved last week, according to a report by state agency FranceAgriMer.
The share of soft wheat crops in good and excellent condition rose to 62% (61% a week earlier and 88% a year ago), winter barley – to 64% (66% and 88%), spring barley – to 74% (73% and 89%). Development rates of soft wheat and winter barley are slightly ahead of last year.
The proportion of durum wheat crops in good to excellent condition decreased during the week to 63% (64% and 82%). Durum wheat development is four days behind last year and five days behind the five-year average.

UK: Laphroaig distillery planning production expansion
|
Suntory Global Spirits has submitted a planning application to expand production at Islay distillery Laphroaig and improve its visitor experience, The Spirits Business reported on June 12.
Suntory Global Spirits (formerly Beam Suntory) submitted the plans to Argyll & Bute Council to ‘future-proof’ its Laphroaig Distillery with an expansion of the site.
As part of the plans, Suntory will expand the stillhouse and increase the number of stills from seven to 11. It also proposes installing 12 new washbacks, a new mash house, and restoring the original ground floor maltings building, where the Laphroaig visitor centre is currently located.
Plans were shared with the local community at an information event held at the distillery in August last year.
Following community feedback, plans for a loop access road have been amended with a smaller turning circle proposed to lower the site’s vehicle footprint and improve access around the distillery. The size of the new stillhouse has also been reduced to complement the wider distillery site.
Due to the scale of the investment, the redevelopment will take place over a number of phases. Suntory confirmed that operations would continue as normal during the construction period.
Laphroaig Distillery attracts approximately 29,000 visitors every year.
