Brewery news USA, CO: Yetters Brewing Company on track to open in Greeley by mid-July
Daniel Yetter has been waiting a year to enjoy a beer with his closest friends and his friends-to-be at his downtown Greeley brewery, the Greeley Tribune reported on June 12.

Since spring 2023, Yetter has been going through the ebbs and flows of trying to open the new location for Yetters Brewing Company, 1011 9th Ave. From the paperwork, permits, licenses, remodeling and everything else needed, Yetter feels optimistic he’s nearing the light at the end of the tunnel.

“It’s been a very stressful, hard operation,” he said. “But I do feel like the city of Greeley is excited for it.”

Yetter said it’s looking like everything is on track for the brewery to open in mid-July, and even though he’s gotten his hopes up previously about when it’ll open, he has a good feeling this time around.

“We’re definitely closer than we’ve ever been,” Yetter said.

When it does open, customers can expect a lot of American lagers on tap, he said. Yetter wants the brewery to be a lager house that’s a mixture of “Cheers” and an homage to his upbringing. Yetter grew up on a farm outside of Ault, so the brewery will have pictures of his childhood farm and historic Greeley. ...More info on site

Barley news Canada: Feed barley bids holding relatively steady in Western Canada
Feed barley bids are holding relatively steady in Western Canada, showing little movement over the past month as end users await the new crop amid relatively favourable growing conditions, Canadian Cattlemen reported on June 13.

Drought fears had encouraged some demand earlier in the year, but “now that those fears have been alleviated, (buyers) are starting to dig in,” according to a newsletter from Alberta grain brokers Agfinity, noting that while it is still early in the growing season “projections for this year’s crop are sound in most areas.”

Agfinity noted that new crop pricing is starting to become available at levels lower than old crop prices.

The monthly grains update from the United States Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service, released June 12, estimated Canadian barley production in 2024/25 at 9.6 million tonnes. That compares with the 8.9 million tonnes grown the previous year and would be about 100,000 tonnes above Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s current projection.

The USDA sees Canadian exports hitting 2.4 million tonnes in 2024/25, which would be up only slightly from the 2.3 million tonnes it expects for the current marketing year. However, with a larger domestic crop, the USDA forecasts Canadian domestic barley usage will rise to 7.4 ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: Bubble Line Brewing Company hoping to become first Black woman-founded brewery in the state of Minnesota
Rondo resident Brittney Mikell aims to open the first Black woman-founded brewery in the state of Minnesota. And she wants to do it in her own neighborhood.

So, she’s working with the Rondo Community Land Trust to find the location on Selby Ave. that will be just right, and she launched a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo to fund the launch of Bubble Line Brewing Company with $500,000.

Mikell worked as a pharmacist before pivoting to making beer during the pandemic.

She enjoyed her work in healthcare. “I’ve always been the kind of person that needed to be contributing to something bigger than myself in my career,” she explained. In that way, she fit right in. She had struggled academically while earning a degree in chemistry at Carleton College, but around the end of her four years, everything began to click. “I learned how to study and what worked for my learning style, and I started doing better,” Mikell remarked. “That grew my confidence a ton. So I didn’t actually struggle at all during my doctorate studies. I knew how to put in the work to learn, I did well, and it paid off.” She received her doctor of pharmacy at the University ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TN: Reelfoot Brewing Company opening in downtown Union City next month
Reelfoot Brewing Company is opening in downtown Union City next month. Co-owner Eric Sanford was moving his equipment this morning into the new building located at the corner of First & Church, Radio NWTN reported on June 12.

Main Street Union City announced on June 12 a full press release will be issued soon with more about the history of Reelfoot Brewing Company, the owners, opening date and more.

Officials said, “Excitement is in the air in downtown Union City! We can’t wait to see what’s next!”

Brewery news USA, MI: St. Johns Brewing Co. up for sale
A restaurant and brewery in a 130-year-old former bank building in St. Johns’ downtown is for sale, the Lansing State Journal reported on June 13.

St. Johns Brewing Co. went on the market about a month ago, 3½ years after the business opened at 200 N. Clinton Ave. in December 2020.

The brewery is the first, but won't be the last, of Jim Holton's restaurants and breweries to be listed for sale. Holton, who also owns and operates businesses in Mount Pleasant and Alma, is retiring and plans to sell all of them eventually.

"I am starting to sell off all of my restaurants one at a time," Holton said, who plans to retire now that his son is graduating from high school and his wife is already retired.

The business is leasing the 4,000-square-foot space in the century-old building and Holton said the property's owner is open to signing a new lease with a buyer. The sale of the restaurant and brewery, listed for $199,000, comes with all equipment and an existing liquor license.

"I'd rather have it handed off to somebody locally down there," said Holton, who lives in Mount Pleasant. "It'd be great to have someone local own it and operate it ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, SC: Tetrad Brewing Co. moving from its current location in Greenville
A popular Greenville brewery revealed on social media that it’s moving from its location in the city’s Overbrook neighborhood, GSA Business reported on June 13.

In the post, Tetrad Brewing Co., 603 E. Stone Ave., said it is in the process of transitioning into a new space, which was not disclosed. It was expecting minimum downtime, according to the post.

“Alas, that is not the case,” the post stated.

Tetrad’s lease ends at the end of June and it has yet to cement details on its new location, “so we will have a few months when we won’t be able to serve you our great beers with friendly smiles,” the post stated.

John Bucher and Chad Tydings opened Tetrad nearly five years ago, according to its website. The duo lived in various locations, including Alaska, Oregon, Utah, New York and Vermont, before settling in Greenville, according to the site.

The last day at the Stone Avenue location will be June 22, according to the post. It just so happens Tetrad’s last day will coincide with its annual Pints 4 Pups event, which supports Greenville County Animal Care. That event will be from 1 to 5 p.m. at Hampton Station.

Brewery news USA, TX: Klaus Brewing Co. closing, citing financial woes
Unfortunately, Houstonians have seen several brewery closings over the last 12 months, from well-known entities with enormous taprooms to family run businesses, and everything in between. The latest to announce its closing is one of the city’s most under-the-radar businesses, Chron reported on June 13.

Klaus Brewing Co., which has been creating some of the area's best German-style beers since 2018, will shutter after one final shift on June 15. Klaus Brewing founder Thomas Lemke wrote on Facebook that the brewery couldn't recover after a mechanical failure permanently wrecked its brewing system.

"Without an additional, very significant cost to dig deeper and find a possible solution, our only option is to purchase a replacement system," the Tuesday post read. "Neither choice is financially feasible, so after much deliberation, we have made the devastating decision to close Klaus Brewing."

Lemke thanked Klaus' staff and patrons for sticking with the brewery over the last six years. He also noted the brewery will stay open under regular hours through June 15, when it will host live music before shutting off the lights.

"We invite everyone to come get a few last pints and pick up some merch to remember us by," the post read.

Brewery news Vietnam: Vietnam proposes to hike special consumption tax on alcohol to 100% by 2030
Vietnam’s Finance Ministry has proposed to hike a special consumption tax on alcoholic drinks to 100% by 2030, the ministry said, a move that may further hurt the country’s beverage industry, KFGO reported on June 13.

Under the draft proposal which is pending lawmakers’ approval, the special consumption tax on beer and strong liquor will be raised to 70%-80% by 2026 and gradually increase it to 90%-100% in 2030, compared with the current 65%.

“Alcoholic drinks and beer prices will increase by 20% in 2026, compared with 2025,” the finance ministry said in the proposal, adding that prices would continue to increase by 2%-3%, depending on inflation.

“Levying high tax rates is necessary to help reduce consumption of alcoholic drinks,” it added.

Vietnam’s beer industry has already been hit by the country’s strict drink driving law, under which the alcohol content limit for drivers is zero since 2019.

Last year, beer industry revenue decreased by 11% and profits decreased by 23%, according to estimations of the Beer – Alcohol – Beverage Association.

Shares in Sabeco, Vietnam’s largest brewer, fell by 3.96% on Friday morning after the ministry’s proposal.

The finance ministry also proposed a hike in special consumption tax on soft drinks and cigarettes.

Whisky news UK: Laphroaig distillery planning production expansion
Suntory Global Spirits has submitted a planning application to expand production at Islay distillery Laphroaig and improve its visitor experience, The Spirits Business reported on June 12.

Suntory Global Spirits (formerly Beam Suntory) submitted the plans to Argyll & Bute Council to ‘future-proof’ its Laphroaig Distillery with an expansion of the site.

As part of the plans, Suntory will expand the stillhouse and increase the number of stills from seven to 11. It also proposes installing 12 new washbacks, a new mash house, and restoring the original ground floor maltings building, where the Laphroaig visitor centre is currently located.

Plans were shared with the local community at an information event held at the distillery in August last year.

Following community feedback, plans for a loop access road have been amended with a smaller turning circle proposed to lower the site’s vehicle footprint and improve access around the distillery. The size of the new stillhouse has also been reduced to complement the wider distillery site.

Due to the scale of the investment, the redevelopment will take place over a number of phases. Suntory confirmed that operations would continue as normal during the construction period.

Laphroaig Distillery attracts approximately 29,000 visitors every year.

In the future, Suntory proposes that ...More info on site

Brewery news Russia: Russian brewers counting on state support to compete with imported beer
Russian beer imports have been growing recently, so domestic brewers are counting on support through regulation of import duties, the president of United Breweries, Oraz Durdyev told Interfax on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

"Imports now have just 10% of the market, which is not that significant of a share. But they have indeed been demonstrating growth recently. This can be explained by the fact that imported beer now essentially competes in price with domestic beer," Durdyev said.

Having the option to choose imported beer is "certainly good for consumers," but the impact that growing imports are having on the domestic market is concerning, he said.

"The situation on the beer market has barely managed to stabilize after all the restrictions and logistical problems. Russian businesses have begun to increase their competitiveness, invest in the development of local brands. And so that now these efforts do not turn out to be in vain and so that producers are motived to develop further, it is important to support brewers, including through regulation of import duty rates. The rate should be such that consumers still have a choice, but imported products do not hold back the growth of locally produced beer," ...More info on site
