Brewery news USA, KY: West Sixth Brewing to open a new location in Covington
Lexington-based West Sixth Brewing is set to open a location in Covington, LINK nky reported on July 10.

The West Sixth Covington Haus will be located at 100 West Sixth Street, which previously held Flying Axes until it closed its doors last month.

West Sixth’s current Northern Kentucky location at the Bridge View Box Park at Newport on the Levee will close, and the staff and management will move to the Covington location this fall, per a release from the brewery.

This historic building has had many tenants, one of the most well-known being ‘Covington Haus’ bar and restaurant, led by the late Mick Noll, an advocate for the city of Covington.

“When we found this space and learned the history of the building and the Noll’s involvement in the community, we knew we wanted to pay tribute to the history by naming the location West Sixth Covington Haus,” Ben Self, co-founder of West Sixth Brewing said in a press release. “His family has graciously given their blessing for the use of the name and shared some wonderful stories about the bar’s legacy with us.”

The building is also home to Second Story cocktail bar on the (you guessed it) second floor. Per the release ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Port Coquitlam’s Boardwalk Brewing to close for good on July 14
Port Coquitlam’s brewery trail is getting a little shorter, Tri-City News reported on July 10.

Boardwalk Brewing, in the city’s Dominion Triangle area, is pulling its last tap Sunday, July 14.

The three-year-old craft brewery, renowned for its cotton candy Belgian ale that earned a silver medal at the 2023 Canadian Brewing Awards, announced its closure on its Facebook page Monday, July 8.

“The rising costs in this economic climate are too much for us to sustain,” said the post. “We are so grateful for all of our customers’ support over the years.”

Boardwalk is the second of the four breweries in the city that are located in close proximity to the Traboulay PoCo Trail to be closed, although Taylight Brewing was able to reopen under new ownership in November 2022, a year after shutting its doors. The other breweries along the trail are Northpaw and Tinhouse.

Patina and PoCo Brothers are the other breweries operating in the city.

Boardwalk opened in July 2021 after a slight delay when two of its one-tonne fermenters were stolen from the brewery’s parking lot prior to their installation. They were recovered from a scrap yard but one was so badly damaged, it needed to be replaced.

“It was just more ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada: Labatt’s Halifax brewery supporting its Disaster Relief Program by focusing on water can production
Beverage company Labatt Breweries of Canada has announced that its Halifax brewery is supporting its Disaster Relief Program by focusing on water can production, Packaging Gateway reported on July 11.

The company is investing C$120,000 in new manufacturing technology to meet the growing demand for canned water used in disaster relief.

This strategic move allows the London brewery to concentrate on producing Canada’s renowned beers and ready-to-drink beverages while the Halifax location will focus on maximising water can volume.

The Halifax brewery’s transition to water can production is a first, and the investment is expected to support future volume increases.

To facilitate this initiative, the Halifax brewery will temporarily cease beer production, directing its efforts towards supporting the Atlantic provinces and enhancing the nationwide distribution of water cans.

Since the inception of its Disaster Relief Program in 2012, Labatt has been producing water cans at its London, Canada, brewery, providing safe drinking water to communities affected by disasters.

In 2021, the company strengthened its programme by partnering with Team Rubicon Canada, a veteran-led humanitarian organisation, to deliver water to hard-to-reach areas.

The collaboration has been successful, with Labatt donating its one-millionth can of water in December ...More info on site

Barley news UK: Winter barley crop condition improves across UK
The Agricultural and Horticultural Development Board (AHDB) has confirmed that winter crop conditions remain poor across the UK on a historic basis, Agriland reported on July 11.

However, recent weeks have seen a significant improvement in the situation. This is a direct result of the dry and significantly warmer weather conditions that have impacted on all crops since the middle of April.

Winter combinable crops in the UK suffered a lot of very wet weather this year, from planting and establishment through to late March and beyond.

As a result, crop conditions are more varied than usual. The crops now, are not the best we have ever seen, but have surprised many people with their improvement from earlier in the year.

While some parts of the country are looking more or less as they should, there are notable bare patches and large gaps, particularly in wet corners and headlands across several regions. Central England is particularly affected.

The percentage of the GB winter barley crop rated as either good or excellent is 69%. This is up from the 62% last month, but down from 84% a year ago.

The winter barley crop is starting to turn golden, and sunshine would be welcomed for this crop now ...More info on site

Brewery news Germany: Expected beer sales boom during Euro 2024 failed to materialize - Veltins brewery
A major German brewery on July 12 reported disappointing figures for the beer industry in June.

An expected boom in consumption during the men’s UEFA European Championships failed to materialise.

Veltins representative Michael Huber said the “European Championship effect has flopped for the breweries,“ as rainy weather and a change in drinking habits dampened sales despite Germany hosting the tournament.

The brewery said German drinkers consumed an estimated eight million hectolitres of beer in June, lower than in the same month in 2023. One hectolitre is 100 litres.

German breweries sell around one-sixth of their beer to the hospitality sector, with the lion’s share of their business coming from the retail trade.

According to Veltins, consumers in supermarkets and beverage stores have held back this year.

The comparison with the “summer fairytale” of 2006, when Germany hosted the men’s FIFA World Cup, is sobering.

Beer sales in June of that year were reportedly around 11 million hectolitres. During this year’s tournament, fans have watched more games alone at home, instead of meeting up in large numbers and drinking more heavily.

“That’s different from inviting your neighbour over for a barbecue and drinking beer,“ Mr Huber said.

To calculate the figures, Veltins used data from a logistics company it partly ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Campaign for Real Ale fearful about future of ‘UK beers, brands, and breweries’ following Marston’s decision to leave brewing side of industry
The Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) says it is fearful about the future of "UK beers, brands and breweries" after this week’s announcement that Marston's is to leave the brewing side of the industry and focus on running pubs, BBC reported on July 9.

The company said it had sold its 40% stake in brewing company Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company (CMBC), with Carlsberg acquiring the share for £206m in a sale that had "significantly reduced" debt.

The joint-venture had been operating from an historic brewing site in Chapel Ash, Wolverhampton.

Jacob Collier, the MP representing Burton, an area itself steeped in brewing history, said he was concerned by the news and what the effect might be on those employed within the industry, including those in his own nearby constituency. The BBC has invited Carlsberg to comment on its plans.

Marston's and Carlsberg announced a merger four years ago to form CMBC, in a move that involved Marston's six breweries and distribution depots, but not its pubs.

However, Marston’s said it would continue its "strong partnership" with CMBC through the long-term brand distribution agreement which remained in place.

Carlsberg has also announced it has bought Britvic, the company that makes drinks such as Robinsons squash and J20, ...More info on site

Brewery news Nigeria: Golden Guinea Breweries wins eight-year lawsuit against AB InBev
Golden Guinea Breweries Plc has triumphed in an eight-year, N10 billion lawsuit against Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) and International Breweries Plc, Brand Spur reported on July 12.

The brewer from Umuahia, Abia State, approached the Federal High Court in 2016 and demanded general damages from Pabod Breweries Limited, a business in which AB InBev owns a controlling equity share, in the amount of N10 billion. The brewery claimed Pabod had infringed on its trademark in the manufacturing of Eagle Stout.

On March 6, 2024, Justice Stephen Dalyop Pam of the Federal High Court, Port Harcourt Division, rendered a decision following hearings from S. Nmor, the defendant, and Omolola Aderolu of Johnson Bryant, representing Golden Guinea Breweries Plc.

The Federal High Court granted Golden Guinea Breweries Plc, the owner of the trademark “Eagle Stout,” which is registered as No. 21153 in class 32 at the Nigerian Trade Marks Registry Abuja, among other rights, in a four-page court decision obtained by BusinessDay on Thursday. This includes the right to use the mark exclusively for the manufacture, sale, and distribution of the product in the Nigerian market.

Golden Guinea Breweries, the registered owner of the trademark “Eagle Stout,” has been granted exclusive use of the mark for ...More info on site
