Canada: Canadian buying less beer than ever before
|
Canadians are buying less beer than ever before — which means local breweries have to adapt, Yahoo News Canada reported on July 20.
According to Statistics Canada, the volume of beer purchased per person dropped to an all-time low in the 2022/23 fiscal year.
It's the lowest it's been since it started collecting that data in 1949.
On the latest episode of the CBC podcast, This is Vancouver Island, host Kathryn Marlow looks at how two breweries in Victoria, B.C., are adapting.
Spinnakers Brewpub was one of the first establishments in Canada to brew beer on site and recently celebrated its 40th anniversary.
It produces beer and spirits, as well as mineral water and craft soda, which it serves at its pub and sells in liquor stores.
Now, it's adding canned mocktails to the list.
Paul Hadfield co-founded Spinnakers Brewpub in Victoria in 1984. As a self-described 'publican,' he says he just wants to provide a space for people to socialize, whether they're drinking Spinnakers beer or some of the non-alcoholic products the brewery now offers. (Kathryn Marlow/CBC)
Owner Paul Hadfield acknowledges that younger people aren't drinking as much alcohol as in previous generations — but he says the pandemic reinforced a need to socialize.

In July 2024, Vietnam’s Ministry of Finance proposed to double excise taxes on alcohol by 2030 to increase revenue and discourage excessive drinking.
These plans to double the alcohol excise tax will have a limited impact on the already slowing alcoholic drinks market in Vietnam. Beer consumption dominates alcohol drink patterns, but is already a mature market. Wine will retain its place as a premium alcoholic drink, while spirits consumption will be driven by a growing sense of consumer nationalism, the Thailand Business News reported on July 23.
Vietnam’s alcoholic drinks sector is experiencing a remarkable transformation, projected to sustain momentum despite recent increases in excise taxes. The government’s objective to rein in alcohol consumption through higher taxes aims to improve public health. However, this policy has not deterred the demand for alcoholic beverages, as the rising middle class seeks premium and diverse offerings.
Market dynamics indicate that while immediate sales may suffer, the long-term outlook remains buoyant. Consumers are increasingly inclined to explore craft beers, imported wines, and premium spirits, which suggests a shift towards quality rather than quantity. Additionally, the growing trend of social drinking, especially among younger generations, reinforces the resilience of the sector.

Luxembourg: Brasserie Nationale challenges EU bid to review drinks distributor takeover
|
Luxembourg's largest brewery Brasserie Nationale has challenged EU antitrust regulators' bid to examine its proposed buy of wholesale drinks distributor Boissons Heintz, saying there was no plausible analysis to show that the deal would threaten competition in the Grand Duchy, Reuters reported on July 22.
The appeal by Brasserie Nationale to the Luxembourg-based General Court, Europe's second-highest, came four months after the European Commission told the company to seek its approval for the deal because of the importance of drinks imports in Luxembourg.
The Luxembourg antitrust agency had also requested its bigger peer to review the acquisition.
The Court should annul the Commission's decision because "there was no plausible analysis as regards a threat of competition within the territory of Luxembourg being significantly affected," Brasserie Nationale said in its appeal published in the Official Journal on July 22.
It said regulators also do not have any plausible analysis showing that trade between member states would be affected by the deal.
EU antitrust regulators have in recent years accepted requests by national watchdogs to assess deals which fall below the EU revenue threshold but in which the companies are seen as innovative and potential rivals to their larger counterparts.

Russia: Report identifies most promising markets for Russian beer exports
|
Russia's Agroexport Center in a new report has identified the most promising markets for Russian beer exports and the regions of the country that have the greatest export potential, Interfax reported on July 23.
The most promising markets include China, Belarus, the United Arab Emirates, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan, Serbia, Malaysia, Azerbaijan and Georgia, which are very attractive "in terms of existing conditions, including an acceptable customs tariff burden and significant potential for growth of imports," the report said.
Russian beer exports to China could grow to 46,800 tonnes worth $31.7 million in 2026 from 31,200 tonnes worth $15.8 million in 2023, and increase their share of Chinese beer imports by value to 5.3% from 2.7%, the center estimated. China imported 422,500 tonnes of beer worth $578.3 million in 2023.
Russia has the potential to increase beer exports to the UAE to over 11,000 tonnes worth $7.7 million in 2026 from less than 0.01 tonne worth $0.01 million in 2022 (latest data available), and grow its share of UAE beer imports to 3.6% from 0.2%, the report said. The UAE imported 194,200 tonnes of beer worth $172.3 million in 2022.
