USA: Number of active craft breweries increases to 9,358 as of June 2024
|
The Brewers Association (BA), the trade organization representing small and independent American craft brewers, just released insights from its midyear survey, shedding light on the state of the craft beer industry and providing members with the most up-to-date data.
The number of active craft breweries increased from 9,339 in June 2023 to 9,358 as of June 2024, with the total brewery number also up from 9,456 to 9,528. Midyear 2024 survey results show 54% of surveyed breweries reporting growth in the first half of 2024 compared to a year ago.
However, with beer dollar sales likely more static, there was a continued small decline by volume in the market, estimated to be down 2% compared to 2023. Not a single area by channel or region is driving the decline, with broadly similar trends in packaged and keg distribution, as well as onsite sales.
In breaking down the distribution channels, according to Nielsen IQ (NIQ) scan data, independent craft packaged sales were down 2% year-over-year (YoY), which is stronger than NIQ-defined craft sales. In recent years, distribution has been challenging for many brewers because some distributors and retailers are looking to simplify offerings, and there is increased competition from other product areas, such as ready-to-drink

Tanzania: Tanzania Breweries completes sale of dormant Darbrew unit
|
Tanzania Breweries Ltd (TBL) Plc has completed the sale of its entire 60 percent stake in the beer manufacturing subsidiary Darbrew Ltd and launched a facelift of its production facility at Kibo Breweries Ltd as part of a turnaround plan for the struggling dormant units, The East African reported on July 25.
The Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange-listed brewer approved the sale of Darbrew Ltd to a core shareholder Dar es Salaam City Council (DCC) on August 7, 2019, due to the non-performance of the subsidiary, but the conclusion of the deal has been delayed for years on undisclosed reasons.
The company disclosed in its 2023 annual report that the transaction was completed during the accounting period ended December 31, 2023, as the beer maker moved to shore up its cash flow position amid a cocktail of domestic and global factors, including a significant increase in the cost of production and overheads as a result of the global supply chain disruptions caused by the conflict in the Middle East and eastern Europe.
Locally, the company was impacted by the significant increase in excise duty on raw materials used in the production of beer, exceptionally wet weather and load shedding by the utility,

Australia: Beer prices set to rise in August
|
Beer prices will froth up in August as Australian craft brewers say they are struggling under heavy tax pressures, The North West Star reported on July 24.
With the updated excise tax to be released on July 31 brewers are expecting a rise of around four per cent.
Canberra's BentSpoke Brewing Co. founder Richard Watkins said the excise rise would likely mean consumers would pay a few extras dollars at the till.
So expect a A$60 slab of beer to cost another A$2.36.
Craft breweries have struggled to rebound after the pandemic and Mr Watkins said increasing taxes without improving government support for small businesses was hurting the sector.
"In a tight economic times the government should be supporting Australian owned companies that are investing money back into the economy, into Australia," he said.
More than 600 craft brewers in Australia contribute A$1.93 billion annually to the economy, according to KPMG.
Craft breweries employ more than 10,000 people, which is 51 per cent of the industry, with many in regional areas.
Excise tax is raised in line with the consumer price index (CPI) twice per year. This happens on August 1 and February 1.
Brewers receive a A$350,000 excise rebate each financial year. That financial cushion means small breweries,

World: Nonalcoholic beer Corona Cero gearing up for a big step in its Olympic sponsorship deal
|
Corona Cero, Anheuser-Busch InBev's nonalcoholic beer brand, is gearing up for a big step with its Olympic sponsorship deal. The goal is to help the brand become the best-selling non-alcoholic beer worldwide. To do so, the beer brand will have to overtake rivals such as Heineken 0.0, which already has a strong presence in many markets, MarketScreener reported on July 25.
The Olympic sponsorship provides Corona Cero with a platform to drive its expansion and become a major player in the alcohol-free beer market. According to Marcel Marcondes, AB InBev's Chief Marketing Officer, the Olympics will allow for a more aggressive rollout than usual. As part of the agreement, AB InBev will sell Corona Cero in Olympic-themed packaging and run TV and online advertising campaigns tailored to local audiences in most of the 40 countries where Corona Cero is available.
Marcondes emphasized that AB InBev is playing a leadership game with Corona Cero, aiming to make it the number one non-alcoholic beer in the world. The brand will be sold in Olympic-themed packaging and will be promoted through advertising campaigns on TV and online. In addition, a daily summary of key moments from the Games will be broadcast as part of Olympic

Denmark: Carlsberg creates fonio beer with no use of barley or bittering hops
|
Carlsberg has created a brand-new type of beer that uses only fonio grains, without the use of any barley or bittering hops. The grain, which has thrived in West Africa for over 5,000 years and is widely used in African cooking, can thrive in poor soils and is drought-resistant, the Danish brewer reported on July 25.
The world-first brew demonstrates what can be achieved when new brewing techniques and ingredients meet curiosity - an area that Carlsberg is exploring for future crop varieties, using its curious mindset to push forward advancements in this area. The curious mindset has been at the forefront of everything Carlsberg has done since it opened the brewery doors in 1847.
The new Fonio beer was brewed in collaboration with Brooklyn Brewery as part of its ‘Brewing for Impact’ campaign. The campaign was launched by Brooklyn Brewmaster, Garrett Oliver, to celebrate 30 years with the Brewery. Its aim is to spotlight the ancient West African grain and its untapped brewing potential and ability to drive positive change in the industry.
The resulting limited-edition beer, brewed in the Carlsberg Research Laboratory, is clean, with soft aromas of apricots, white peaches, and melon with an underlying sweetness and lingering bitterness giving

Russia: Wheat, barley crop forecasts increased due to favourable weather
|
Sovecon have increased their forecast for grain production in Russia this year by 3.1 million tonnes (compared to the previous month's estimate), bringing the total to 130.5 million tonnes. The upgrade was made due to improved prospects for winter and spring crops, APK-Inform reported on July 25.
"The wheat production forecast was further increased by 0.1 million tonnes, reaching 84.2 million tonnes. Overall, the forecast was raised by 3.5 million tonnes in July due to favourable weather for spring wheat in Siberia and the Urals and relatively high yields of winter wheat in the south," the report stated.
The forecast for Russian barley production was raised by 0.7 million tonnes to 19.3 million tonnes, owing to relatively high yields of winter barley in the south and favourable weather conditions in the Volga region.
At the same time, the corn harvest forecast was lowered by 1.2 million tonnes to 13.4 million tonnes due to dry and hot weather in southern Russia.
"Major weather models predict that unfavourable weather will persist in the near future, increasing the likelihood of further downward revisions to the forecast," the experts emphasized.

Russia: Export duty on Russian barley remains nil
|
The export duty on Russian wheat will fall 41.2% to 906.4 rubles per tonne in the week starting July 30 from 1,540.4 rubles per tonne during current period, the Agriculture Ministry said.
The duties on barley and corn will remain zero.
Duty rates are based on indicative prices of $220.5 per tonne for wheat against $229.6 per tonne in the current period, $177.9 per tonne for barley versus $177.1 per tonne, and $187.4 per tonne for corn against $188 per tonne.
The duties will be valid until August 6, inclusive.
Russia introduced a grain damper mechanism on June 2, 2021, which provides for floating duties on the export of wheat, corn and barley and the return of funds received from them to subsidize agricultural producers. The duties are calculated weekly from indicators based on the prices of export contracts registered on the Moscow Exchange . Duty rates were calculated in dollars at first, and, since July 2022, in rubles. The duty is 70% of the difference between reference and indicative prices.
The Agriculture Ministry on June 1, 2023, hiked the reference price for calculating the export duty on wheat to 17,000 rubles per tonne from 15,000 rubles per tonne, and the reference price on barley
