Canada, BC: Four Winds Beach House & Brewery about to open in Delta, BC

After eight years of planning, daydreaming, government obstacles and a global pandemic, Delta’s own Four Winds Brewing Co. is about to unveil its long-awaited Four Winds Beach House & Brewery, located at 6350 Market Ave. in Tsawwassen’s Southlands development, Delta Optimist reported on August 1.
Its projected opening is in the first week of August; an exact date is still to come.
The multi-award-winning craft brewery first conceived the idea in 2014, following a conversation with real estate developer Century Group.
Century Group’s Southlands project, which combines residential and commercial properties, is North America’s largest community deliberately rooted in food and farming. Its 530-plus acres is directly adjacent to Boundary Bay Regional Park and Centennial Beach, and 80 percent of the site is public land.
Adam Mills, co-owner of Four Winds, says the Beach House was originally meant to open in 2021 or 2022, but Delta council rejected the first proposed structure in May 2019 for being too large.
Then the pandemic arrived.
But rather than bring the project to a halt, the pandemic provided Mills and his colleagues the opportunity to “go back to the drawing board,” he says, and design a smaller version that could still adequately accommodate a restaurant and a brewing facility.

Canada, AB: Old Yale Brewing to open new location in Beaumont in early spring 2025
|
Chilliwack craft brewer Old Yale Brewing announced Thursday (August 1) it will expand its operations and open a new location in Beaumont, Alberta in early spring 2025, Fraser Valley Today reported.
In a news release from the company, Old Yale Brewing says the expansion represents a significant milestone as their third Craft Brewery + Kitchen branding, giving the company an even larger footprint for sharing their exceptional product with even more beer enthusiasts.
The new venue will be situated in the new Le Reve Community development in Beaumont, Alberta, just minutes south of Edmonton. Old Yale says the new two-storey location will feature a spacious 11,000-square foot facility, offering 20 beers on tap and housing their 100-square foot, 7.5 hectolier brewery. The new Craft Brewery + Kitchen will also showcase a vast selection of cocktails, wine, cider and an expanded Campfire Kitchen menu.

USA, NE: APEShip Brewing opens in the Canteen District in North Platte

APEShip Brewing at 520 N. Dewey St. opened on July 13 in the Canteen District in North Platte, The North Platte Telegraph reported on August 1.
“We had a cold room in our garage that had some taps on it and a lot of our friends would come over and we’d say, why don’t you come here instead of going out,” said owner Joel Bennett. “And they would say ‘You know your beer tastes really good. You should open a brewery,’ and I said ‘Ya but you’re getting it for free. And would someone actually buy it,’ and they go ‘Yes I think so.’”
Joel and his wife, Liz, have been homebrewing for the past six years, and brewery hopping for the last 10. While people encouraged them to open a brewery, they were hesitant.
“Another good friend of mine, he took it to the next level, and he started looking for a place, so kind of pushing me a little bit,” Joel said.
“And we’re also in (a homebrewers club) and they encouraged us to,” Liz said.

USA, MN: Brass Foundry Brewing Co planned for a business park in Minnetonka
|
A new brewery is planned for a business park in Minnetonka, Star Tribune reported on August 2.
Brass Foundry Brewing Co., which last summer had plans to open in the only single-family house in downtown Minneapolis, instead intends to join commercial tenants at Baker Tech, an office complex near the intersection of I-494 and Hwy. 62.
The brewery would occupy a 9,000-square-foot building at 5959 Baker Road. About 3,000 square feet will be used as a taproom. The lease is signed, but the project still needs city approvals, said Jason Simek, a co-owner of Baker Tech who is responsible for leasing at the park.
"This is a tremendous win for us," Simek said. "We were trying to find tenants that would pay rent and be an amenity to the park."
The project is to be presented to the City Council next month with a projected opening set in July.
Brass Foundry had originally sought a brewery and taproom license and off-sale growler license for a 4,500-square-foot house close to U.S. Bank Stadium. But the location in Minnetonka ended up being a better fit, said John Kraus, the brewery's controller.
"It really fit our needs and we really like the spot," Kraus said.

USA, MN: Paddlefish Brewery run by the youngest brewery operators in Minnesota

While most of their classmates at Gustavus Adolphus College shoved off to other cities and states after graduation to fulfill their dreams, Eric Johnson and Luke Dragseth drank a lot of beer and literally went downhill, Star Tribune reported on August 1.
This, too, was their dream.
“We knew it was a big enough town for a brewery, and a college town, so we knew there was a market for it,” Johnson said. “We were that market.”
Just a year after graduating — Johnson’s degree is in a beer-adjacent major, philosophy — the two ex-Gusties achieved their goal and opened Paddlefish Brewery in January in St. Peter, the city of about 12,000 residents that lies down a hill from their campus.
Johnson and Dragseth, both 23, are now the youngest brewery operators in Minnesota.
Along with their third partner and Johnson’s older family friend, Dave Long, they are also the first brewers to open a modern beer facility in the historic city that nearly became Minnesota’s state capital, 70 miles southwest of Minneapolis.

USA, MA: Distraction Brewing Company in Roslindale, 13 Volt Brewing and Roasting to take over its space

A brewery that first opened in a Boston neighborhood five years ago is shutting down, and another brewery will be taking over its space, NBC Boston reported on August 2.
According to an article from Universal Hub, Distraction Brewing Company in Roslindale Square is closing its doors at the end of the month, with the Belgrade Avenue business saying the following in a Facebook post:
“It is with heartfelt gratitude and mixed emotions that Distraction Brewing will begin transitioning operations to 13 Volt Brewing and Roasting on August 31, 2024. The journey of opening and running a brewery during such unpredictable times has been an incredible adventure. After much consideration, we've decided to shift our focus to spending more cherished time with our children before they embark on their own journeys. The demands of the brewery have been significant, and we want to make the most of the precious years we have left with our family....While 13 Volt Brewing and Roasting's opening day is yet to be announced, they will be expanding their services in 2025 to include coffee roasting and in-house food....Thank you once again for being a vital part of our journey. We couldn't have done it without you.”

EU: EU introduces new maximum limits for T-2, HT-2 and DON mycotoxins in cereals and cereal products destined for food
|
As of 1 July 2024, the EU introduced new maximum limits for T-2, HT-2 and DON (deoxynivalenol) mycotoxins in cereals and cereal products destined for food which will impact exports both to EU member states and Northern Ireland, NFU reported on August 2.
Mycotoxins are produced by certain fungi and levels found in unprocessed and processed food products are closely monitored.
The EU has recently updated Regulation (EU) 2023/915 that sets limits on the levels of certain mycotoxins found in products produced in, or exported into, the EU.
The maximum level for DON (deoxynivalenol) has been lowered from 1250 ppb to 1000 ppb for unprocessed cereal grains (excluding oats).
The maximum level in unprocessed oat grains with husk remains at 1750 ppb.
A maximum level of 600 ppb has been set for DON in milling products of cereals.
Maximum levels (sum) of T-2 and HT-2 toxins have been set as follows, reflecting previous EU guidance levels.
• Unprocessed cereal grains (excluding barley) – 50 ppb.
• Unprocessed barley grains (excluding malting barley) – 150 ppb.
• Unprocessed malting barley grains – 200 ppb.
• Unprocessed oat grains with husk – 1250 ppb.
• Oats placed on market for final consumer – 100 ppb.
• Milling products of oats – 100 ppb.

UK: Guinness 0.0 becomes UK’s biggest alcohol-free beer

Guinness 0.0 has surpassed Heineken 0.0 to claim the title of the UK’s biggest alcohol-free beer, The Grocer reported on July 31.
The booze-free tipple has seen its off-trade sales rise by nearly 110% to £33.2m in the past year [NIQ 52 w/e 13 July 2024]. Over the same period, Heineken 0.0 sales have only climbed by 4.2%, to £28.3m.
According to NIQ, Guinness 0.0 overtook Heineken 0.0 at the end of March, based on 52-week rolling data, and has maintained its lead since.
Rounding out the top five alcohol-free beers in UK retail are Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0%, Corona Cero and Beck’s Blue.
A focus on product quality, marketing activations around rugby’s Six Nations Championship and Diageo’s work with retailers to grow the awareness of alcohol-free had contributed to Guinness 0.0’s rise, Diageo GB managing director Nuno Teles told The Grocer.
“It’s the combination of a beautiful liquid, beautifully served in a nice branded pint glass around the sports viewing occasion,” he said.
Despite a growing number of consumers wanting to moderate their alcohol intake, many remained unaware of the existence of non-alcoholic propositions in off-trade settings, Teles claimed.

The Cook Government on August 2 unveiled a new strategy to grow Western Australia's craft beer sector, create jobs and promote the industry's 'paddock to pint' tourism experience, WA.gov.au reported.
The inaugural Western Australian Craft Beer Strategy brings together all parts of the craft beer supply chain to drive forward a unified and sustainable industry.
The industry-led strategy aims to boost production, with the ambitious goal of tripling either the volume or value of locally produced beer over ten years.
It also strives to improve supply chain integration, including those that produce homegrown barley, hops and malt, and the local businesses that provide packaging, distribution and retail services.
WA is considered to be the birthplace of Australia's craft beer sector, with the establishment of a handful of now iconic breweries in Perthin the 1980s and '90s.
There are now more than 120 breweries across the metropolitan area and regional WA, representing 20 per cent of the national industry.
Beer manufacturing contributed an estimated $648 million to the WA economy in 2020-21, directly supporting around 967 full-time jobs and indirectly supporting more than 4,000 jobs across the State

South Africa: Heineken to step up investments in brands with ‘greatest long-term growth opportunities’

Amstel owner Heineken plans to step up investment in brands that carry the greatest long-term growth opportunities, including "notable increases" in marketing and sales in South Africa and other emerging markets, Az.com reported on July 31.
The Dutch-brewing giant has recently faced some pressure in terms of sale volumes in South Africa, but CEO Dolf van den Brink also told an investor conference call on July 29 that the company's local wine, Distell spirits, cider, and ready-to-drink portfolio outperformed the market in their respective categories.
This includes momentum behind the Savanna and Bernini brands, though he conceded that Heineken has "more work to do in the beer segment" in South Africa.
Van den Brink did not specify what this work on the group's beer portfolio entailed, but it is confident about reaching a target of €500 million for its 2024 year to end-December and will "reinvest a larger proportion of these savings into marketing and sales."
In February, when it released full-year results for its 2023 year, Heineken announced it was writing down its South Africa business by €491 million (about R10 billion), or 16%, under pressure from rising interest rates and volume declines.
