USA: Cannabis company Tilray buys four Molson Coors breweries
|
Canadian cannabis company, Tilray, is making more moves in the craft beer space and this time it’s picking up brands from Molson Coors, The Denver Post reported.
On August 13, Tilray announced it has inked a deal with the beverage giant to acquire four breweries: Hop Valley Brewing Co. in Eugene, Ore., Terrapin Beer Co. in Athens, Ga., Revolver Brewing in Granbury, Texas, and Atwater Brewery in Detroit. The purchase price was not disclosed.
The acquisition comes at a time when the beer industry overall is struggling, but that hasn’t deterred Tilray from betting big on the space. As of 2023, Tilray was the sixth-largest craft beer company in the U.S. by production volume, according to the Brewers Association.
“Tilray Brands is proud to be driving the most compelling and unique growth story in the craft beer industry,” Irwin Simon, Tilray’s chairman and CEO, said in a statement. “We are confident in our ability to drive revenue, generate cost synergies, and expand national distribution reinforcing our leadership position in craft beer resulting in tremendous growth opportunities for our global beverage business.”
Molson Coors purchased three of the four aforementioned brands – Revolver, Hop Valley, and Terrapin – in 2016 when the craft beer segment

Australia: Coopers Brewery opens new visitor’s centre, microbrewery and whisky distillery at its Regency Park brewery
|
On Tuesday, August 6, Coopers Brewery swung open the doors to its new visitor’s centre, microbrewery and whisky distillery, situated alongside the existing brewery at Regency Park, South Australia, The Shout reported.
The new, world-class facility has been designed to offer a unique and immersive experience for local, national and international tourists, celebrating the 162-year legacy of the brand.
Now, the home of Coopers comprises a restaurant, three bars and an expansive outdoor plaza, alongside a dedicated tasting room and interactive history displays.
For the first time in the history of the business, Coopers will expand its realm into the world of whisky using the new on-site whisky distillery, positioned alongside a new microbrewery which will allow Coopers to produce small-batch experimental beers.
Almost 20 months since construction began at the Regency Park site, the $70m development was unveiled at an official opening event, officiated by South Australian Governor, Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson AC and attended by the Cooper family and more than 300 industry professionals.
Speaking at the official opening, Coopers Managing Director Dr Tim Cooper said: “This new visitors centre is about celebrating our history and our originality with an emphasis on what makes Coopers different. We’re still standing

Uruguay: FNC brewery reopens after being deemed uncompetitive
|
The FNC brewery in Minas in the province of Lavalleja reopened Monday, August 12 with some 30 workers to do some cleaning and maintenance before the others return next week, thus closing a long-standing conflict that threatened the survival of one of the plants belonging to Uruguay's most iconic beer producers, MercoPress reported.
The plant had been closed since July when the company shut it down citing competitiveness problems in the beer market. The announcement triggered negotiations involving high-level government authorities to reach a solution that finally reversed the measure.
However, union leader Andrés Arellano explained that some workers were indeed laid off while others remained on strike. Production and canning is expected to start next month with a new system.
The brewery was to be reopened last week but negotiations were stalled when FNC questioned the union's list of those who were due to show up on reopening day, which had been drafted by the labor grouping based on seniority. Five of the names on that list were written off given their personal and professional records, it was explained. A new understanding was eventually reached regarding these workers, it was also explained.
FNC said it was closing the plant due to competitiveness problems

India: Kirin-backed B9 Beverages seeks more clout with new brewery
|
An Indian craft brewer backed by Japan’s Kirin Holdings wants to overtake entrenched global brands by building a US$70 million beer factory and raising fresh funds ahead of a public listing in 2026, The Business Times reported on August 10.
B9 Beverages is building a new brewing facility in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, which, once completed, will become India’s biggest beer factory and expand production, founder and chief executive Ankur Jain said in an interview. The company currently leases six brewing units and sells an equivalent of eight million cases of beer a year.
The New Delhi-based company has also appointed investment bank Morgan Stanley to lead another round of fundraising ahead of the initial public offering.
“2023 was a very tough year for us because we underwent a very drastic transformation in our sales operations, supply chain, financial checks and balances,” Jain said. “It was a deliberate decision that caused a slowdown, but we are a much stronger company today.”
The new factory will cost between US$60 and 70 million and will have a capacity of 50 million cases, the first phase of which is expected to become operation by next summer, Jain added.
B9 overhauled its operations last year

USA, OR: Nearly 20% less of hops planted in Oregon this year
|
Next week, many of Oregon’s hop farmers will begin their harvest. However, nearly 20% less of their essential crop was planted this year due to declining craft beer sales, the Oregon Beverage Alliance says.
“Beer is usually only four ingredients – water, malt, yeast, and hops, which makes the quality of those ingredients all the more important,” said Sam Pecoraro, brewmaster at Von Ebert Brewing and Secretary of the Oregon Brewers Guild, in a press release.
“We’re lucky to be in the Northwest where nearly all of America’s hops are grown ... but with beer sales down across the country, that significantly impacts our local agricultural community as well as brewers.”
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture via the OBA, hop acreage decreased nationally by -18% from 2023. This statistic is mirrored by Oregon hop growers, who are also down -18% compared to last year.
Oregon has gone from 7,000 hop acres in 2022 to just 5,500 acres now, the OBA claims.
“It’s been tough to say the least with the Oregon hop harvest down -12% last year and now -18% this year,” said fourth-generation hop farmer Erica Lorentz of Sodbuster Farms in the same release. “Sometimes it’s simply a variety of hop going
