Brewery news USA: Cannabis company Tilray buys four Molson Coors breweries
Canadian cannabis company, Tilray, is making more moves in the craft beer space and this time it’s picking up brands from Molson Coors, The Denver Post reported.

On August 13, Tilray announced it has inked a deal with the beverage giant to acquire four breweries: Hop Valley Brewing Co. in Eugene, Ore., Terrapin Beer Co. in Athens, Ga., Revolver Brewing in Granbury, Texas, and Atwater Brewery in Detroit. The purchase price was not disclosed.

The acquisition comes at a time when the beer industry overall is struggling, but that hasn’t deterred Tilray from betting big on the space. As of 2023, Tilray was the sixth-largest craft beer company in the U.S. by production volume, according to the Brewers Association.

“Tilray Brands is proud to be driving the most compelling and unique growth story in the craft beer industry,” Irwin Simon, Tilray’s chairman and CEO, said in a statement. “We are confident in our ability to drive revenue, generate cost synergies, and expand national distribution reinforcing our leadership position in craft beer resulting in tremendous growth opportunities for our global beverage business.”

Molson Coors purchased three of the four aforementioned brands – Revolver, Hop Valley, and Terrapin – in 2016 when the craft beer segment ...More info on site

Hops news USA, OR: Nearly 20% less of hops planted in Oregon this year
Next week, many of Oregon’s hop farmers will begin their harvest. However, nearly 20% less of their essential crop was planted this year due to declining craft beer sales, the Oregon Beverage Alliance says.

“Beer is usually only four ingredients – water, malt, yeast, and hops, which makes the quality of those ingredients all the more important,” said Sam Pecoraro, brewmaster at Von Ebert Brewing and Secretary of the Oregon Brewers Guild, in a press release.

“We’re lucky to be in the Northwest where nearly all of America’s hops are grown ... but with beer sales down across the country, that significantly impacts our local agricultural community as well as brewers.”

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture via the OBA, hop acreage decreased nationally by -18% from 2023. This statistic is mirrored by Oregon hop growers, who are also down -18% compared to last year.

Oregon has gone from 7,000 hop acres in 2022 to just 5,500 acres now, the OBA claims.

“It’s been tough to say the least with the Oregon hop harvest down -12% last year and now -18% this year,” said fourth-generation hop farmer Erica Lorentz of Sodbuster Farms in the same release. “Sometimes it’s simply a variety of hop going ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, SK: New brewery program helps Saskatoon locals get into industry
Despite high costs and interprovincial regulations, craft breweries have seen massive success in Saskatchewan, Global News reported on August 9.

Industry newcomers, however, face major challenges. So, Saskatoon’s 9 Mile Legacy Brewing, has created a new division, called LGCY Innovation Hub, to help those interested in brewing learn more about how to navigate the hurdles that come with the industry.

Cassy Appelt, program coordinator for LGCY, said the new program could bring even more brewers into the industry.

“We see this as not only a hub for innovation, but a hub for people to take advantage of a network — so being able to put people in contact with sources of funding to bring what they’re doing to another level.”

Appelt said the program benefits everyone from homebrewers to farmers, who can use their crops in many different styles of brewing.

“We’ve had lots of people reaching out in several different avenues who are interested in being able to learn about packaging their products, who want to take their agricultural output and find a new niche for it.”

Graham Kerr is co-founder of Paradox Pizzeria & Brewing and the first member of the LGCY Innovation Hub. Working closely with 9 Mile Legacy, Paradox Brewing ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NM: Ex Novo Brewing Company opening its newest location in downtown Albuquerque
A local brewery is bringing some new life to the heart of the metro in Albuquerque. Ex Novo Brewing Company is opening their newest location at Seventh and Central, KOB 4 reported on August 9.

It’s one of the biggest additions to the downtown Albuquerque landscape in recent years, and it’s proving there are still plenty of new opportunities hiding inside old buildings.

“We really believe that every city needs a thriving downtown core,” said Joel Gregory, president & founder of Ex Novo Brewery.

Gregory knew his chain of brewpubs could give downtown Albuquerque some extra buzz.

“We’re certainly not the first amazing thing to happen down here, but we want to be part of it,” said Gregory.

Constructing a brand new building downtown isn’t very practical, but Gregory says that was never the plan.

“This is a really old historic building. It was the Firestone tires building for over 80 years,” Gregory said. “It was vacant, though, for quite a few years, and that was the big reason why we wanted to come and reactivate this space, and lighten it up and get Central Avenue bustling again.”

The 11,000-square foot building has plenty of space for bustling with a full restaurant ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Walnut Creek's Calicraft Brewing Co. acquires Heretic Brewery and Distillery
Calicraft, a Walnut Creek-based craft brewery, has acquired a Solano County legacy brand, the Fairfield-based Heretic Brewery and Distillery, Silicon Valley reported on August 13.

The move enables Calicraft to increase its brewing capacity and expand its production and distribution, according to a press statement. Financial details about the Aug. 5 transaction were not announced.

The two brands have similar histories and are roughly the same size, according to Thomas Vo, Calicraft’s marketing director and brewmaster. Heretic was founded in 2010 and Calicraft in 2012. Additionally, the two breweries share a longtime connection: Calicraft CEO Blaine Landberg and Heretic founder Jamil Zainasheff were once in the same homebrewing club, Vo says.

“It makes sense to keep a legacy brand going,” he says. “We’re really focused on preserving Heretic. …That doesn’t necessarily change any of our plans either,” he adds.

Calicraft has a number of ambitious initiatives in the works: It is currently planning a major renovation to its Shadelands location, looking to open a new restaurant and bar in downtown Walnut Creek (which could open in the second quarter of 2025), and expanding to an additional location in Davis.

Acquiring Heretic Brewing strengthens the brewery’s supply for its on-premises beer services and supports its planned ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NV: Boulder Dam Brewery no longer closing
Boulder City’s only brewery that was previously set to close its doors will now stay open, FOX5 Vegas reported on August 9.

The owners of the Boulder Dam Brewery posted on social media that after a “close call” of almost being forced to close or relocate, they’ve reached an agreement on a lease with a new property owner.

“We are overwhelmed and humbled by the outpouring of support from all of you,” they said online. “Your rallying cries, words of encouragement, and unwavering loyalty truly made the difference. We cannot wait to welcome you back, raise a glass together, and continue creating memories.”

Brewery owner Todd Cook said they were given a 90-day notice to leave the building. Cook said the previous property owners wanted to sell it and were asking for more than they can afford.

A GoFundMe campaign to assist with relocation raised $5,300. It’s unclear how the money will now be used.

Brewery news USA, TN: Mayday Brewery to close after 12 years in business
After 12 years in business, Murfreesboro’s Mayday Brewery has announced it will close in November.

Owner and Operator Ozzy Nelson announced on their Facebook page their last day of operation will be November 16th. He said they signed an agreement with Experience Community Church to take over the space on Old Salem Road on November 30th.

Nelson asked for the community to continue to support the local brewery until they close. He says normal hours will continue until the end. Nelson said they will have a big celebration on that last Saturday of operation.

Brewery news USA, MI: Jamex Brewing Co. to close at the end of August
Jamex Brewing Co., a nanobrewery in St. Clair Shores, will close at the end of August, its owners announced on Facebook.

In its seven years of business, Jamex has become known for its small but creative menu of ales, lagers, wine and ciders that is constantly changing, often featuring fruity-forward IPAs and sours to try. Frequent events, like themed trivia nights, euchre tournaments and more, pulled even more customers in and developed a community within the brewery.

The owners cited the challenging industry in a challenging time as their reason for closure: "At this point, the risk/reward of owning this business with an amazing family of 5 to support simply does not justify staying open."

However, until close, the owners plan continue their scheduled events, encouraging their dedicated customers to come in and "throw back some brewskis" with them.

Jamex is located at 21721 Harper Ave.

The closing leaves two breweries in St. Clair Shores: Baffin Brewing Co. and Copper Hop Brewing Co. Dragon's Landing, a brewpub from Dragonmead Brewery, closed in March.

Brewery news Australia: Coopers Brewery opens new visitor’s centre, microbrewery and whisky distillery at its Regency Park brewery
On Tuesday, August 6, Coopers Brewery swung open the doors to its new visitor’s centre, microbrewery and whisky distillery, situated alongside the existing brewery at Regency Park, South Australia, The Shout reported.

The new, world-class facility has been designed to offer a unique and immersive experience for local, national and international tourists, celebrating the 162-year legacy of the brand.

Now, the home of Coopers comprises a restaurant, three bars and an expansive outdoor plaza, alongside a dedicated tasting room and interactive history displays.

For the first time in the history of the business, Coopers will expand its realm into the world of whisky using the new on-site whisky distillery, positioned alongside a new microbrewery which will allow Coopers to produce small-batch experimental beers.

Almost 20 months since construction began at the Regency Park site, the $70m development was unveiled at an official opening event, officiated by South Australian Governor, Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson AC and attended by the Cooper family and more than 300 industry professionals.

Brewery news Uruguay: FNC brewery reopens after being deemed uncompetitive
The FNC brewery in Minas in the province of Lavalleja reopened Monday, August 12 with some 30 workers to do some cleaning and maintenance before the others return next week, thus closing a long-standing conflict that threatened the survival of one of the plants belonging to Uruguay's most iconic beer producers, MercoPress reported.

The plant had been closed since July when the company shut it down citing competitiveness problems in the beer market. The announcement triggered negotiations involving high-level government authorities to reach a solution that finally reversed the measure.

However, union leader Andrés Arellano explained that some workers were indeed laid off while others remained on strike. Production and canning is expected to start next month with a new system.

The brewery was to be reopened last week but negotiations were stalled when FNC questioned the union's list of those who were due to show up on reopening day, which had been drafted by the labor grouping based on seniority. Five of the names on that list were written off given their personal and professional records, it was explained. A new understanding was eventually reached regarding these workers, it was also explained.

FNC said it was closing the plant due to competitiveness problems ...More info on site

Brewery news India: Kirin-backed B9 Beverages seeks more clout with new brewery
An Indian craft brewer backed by Japan’s Kirin Holdings wants to overtake entrenched global brands by building a US$70 million beer factory and raising fresh funds ahead of a public listing in 2026, The Business Times reported on August 10.

B9 Beverages is building a new brewing facility in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, which, once completed, will become India’s biggest beer factory and expand production, founder and chief executive Ankur Jain said in an interview. The company currently leases six brewing units and sells an equivalent of eight million cases of beer a year.

The New Delhi-based company has also appointed investment bank Morgan Stanley to lead another round of fundraising ahead of the initial public offering.

“2023 was a very tough year for us because we underwent a very drastic transformation in our sales operations, supply chain, financial checks and balances,” Jain said. “It was a deliberate decision that caused a slowdown, but we are a much stronger company today.”

The new factory will cost between US$60 and 70 million and will have a capacity of 50 million cases, the first phase of which is expected to become operation by next summer, Jain added.

B9 overhauled its operations last year ...More info on site
