USA, CA: Hops & Fog Brewing Co. debuts softly in Pacific Grove
|
Pacific Grove, where it was illegal to sell alcohol until 1969, has its first brewery, Edible Monterey Bay reported on August 13.
Hops & Fog Brewing Co. debuted softly this weekend on Lighthouse Avenue, and as of today has swung its doors open to the public, just in time for a high-traffic Car Week.
If early returns are any indication, it feels like a welcome fit in a downtown district eager for an infusion of energy.
Co-owner/operators Mike Durrant and Ximena Waissbluth are both longtime P.G. residents, and Pagrovia-inspired accents—including marine murals by artist Hanif Wondir, vintage photos of Lovers Point and Lighthouse Avenue, and an artisan shelf composed of foraged sea glass—reinforce the local identity.
The working nano brewery’s three and a half barrel system stands along the west wall of the former Monterey Bay Laundry, opposite the sleek domed pizza oven in the kitchen.
For now, a curated list of local craft beers from Hidden Hills Brewing and Blending, Other Brother Beer Company and Alvarado Street Brewing holds space until HnF’s debut recipes arrive with the official grand opening over Labor Day weekend. Ravenswood’s newest brewery is hosting a grand opening Saturday, August 17 to celebrate its new headquarters and showcase its flagship beers, Block Club Chicago reported.
Is/Was Brewing’s grand opening is set for noon Saturday, August 17 at the brewery’s new home at 5121 N. Ravenswood Ave.
“We’ll have a fresh batch of our flagship beer, live music from Andrew Lawrence and the Harold’s Chicken Truck will be there too,” owner Mike Schallau said.
The taproom will have 10 of its saison beers on tap in addition to guest drafts from Goldfinger Brewing Company, Hop Butcher For The World and Begyle Brewing.
The grand opening coincides with Is/Was Brewing’s fifth anniversary of first releasing Will Be, its saison-style farmhouse ale, at Beer Temple, 3173 N. Elston Ave.
Schallau got into craft brewing while attending DePaul University, he said.
“DePaul didn’t have classes on Friday, so I would take the bus to Half Acre. I ended up falling in love with beer and started home brewing while in college,” Schallau said.

USA, ID: Payette Brewing Company not for sale but most beer production will move out of state

A popular Boise brewery announced a partnership with a Colorado-based beer company but later clarified to BoiseDev that neither brewery is being sold.
Payette Brewing Company posted on social media earlier this week that it’s “joining forces” with Upslope Brewing Company out of Boulder.
“You can look forward to the same great beers, breweries, and tap rooms you’ve come to know and love, but now with an expanded community of passionate and adventurous people. We’re bringing together new friends, fresh ideas, and authentic experiences that make us stronger together,” the post reads in part.
BoiseDev reached out to Payette founder and CEO Mike Francis to find out what that means.
Francis said Payette is not being sold or buying Upslope but the two will share resources. This includes moving much of Payette’s beer production to Upslope’s Boulder facilities, while Payette’s ready-to-drink cocktail production will remain in Boise.
Payette’s canned cocktails, known as AnyTimers, include Greyhound, Moscow Mule and Le’Boise, and feature ten percent alcohol by volume.
Beers include the Sofa King line, lagers, wheats, sour ales, IPAs and more.
Francis said Payette’s taproom will remain as is, but will soon offer more varieties of beer.

USA, FL: Buffalo’s Resurgence Brewing Company to open new location in Fort Myers
|
A popular Buffalo, New York, brewery is making its way to south Fort Myers.
Resurgence Brewing Company will be at 6150 Exchange Lane, near the intersection of Michael G. Rippe and Six Mile Cypress parkways, south of the Lee Health Sports Complex.
Fort Myers-based Seagate Development Group broke ground recently on the 25,000-square-foot brewpub and restaurant.
“We love Fort Myers and wanted to bring the Resurgence Brewing Company experience to Southwest Florida,” Jeff Ware, Resurgence founder and owner, said in a news release. “We are looking forward to joining the thriving craft brewing community in Fort Myers.”
Jeff and his wife Erin first opened Resurgence Brewing Company (RBC) in 2014 in Buffalo after realizing the city had no beer gardens like the ones they frequented in New York City.
According to its website, Resurgence brews nearly 5,000 gallons of high-quality unique and experimental beer weekly. Think Sponge Candy Stout (made with excess cuttings of Watson’s Chocolate’s beloved sponge candy), Loganberry Wit and Cosmic Truth — a mosaic hopped session ale.
Food-wise, RBC’s offerings include pretzels, nachos, handhelds (like fried chicken, short ribs and Chicago street burger), salads, wings, mac & cheese and rice bowl.

Australia: Malting, feed barley exports surge in June
|
Australia exported 725,085 tonnes of barley and 249,071t of sorghum in June, according to the latest export data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Grain Central reported on August 13.
The feed barley component at 485,276t was more than double the 216,118t shipped in May, with shipments to China at 384,002t accounting for 79 percent of the total.
The second-biggest destination for Australia’s June-shipped feed barley was Japan on 75,600t, followed by Vietnam on 17,855t.
Malting exports at 239,809t also surged from the May total of 147,507t, with China on 146,173t accounting for 61pc of the June figure.
Mexico on 33,000t, followed closely by Vietnam on 31,295t, were the second and third-biggest markets respectively for June-shipped malting barley.
China was also the major market for June-shipped sorghum, taking 220,871t, or 89pc, of the 249,071t total.
Japan on 22,064t was the second-biggest market for June-shipped sorghum, followed by Taiwan on 4380t.
Flexi Grain pool manager Sam Roache said June barley figures were the biggest seen since January.
“WA shipments where particularly strong, accounting for more than half of total shipments and sending the state carryout stocks to record tight levels,” Mr Roache said.

Ukraine: Ukraine completes barley harvest
|
According to the Ministry of Agrarian Policy, as of 15 August, grain and leguminous crops in Ukraine were harvested from a total area of 6.713m hectares, which is 61% of the planned area. The gross grain harvest is estimated at 28.459 million tonnes with an average yield of 42.4 centners per hectare, APK Inform reported on August 16.
In terms of crops, the dynamics of harvesting is as follows:
• wheat - 21.68 million tonnes from 4.85 million hectares (100% of the plan) at a yield of 44.7 c/ha;
• barley - 5.48 million tonnes from 1.4 million hectares (100% of the plan) with a yield of 39.2 centners per hectare;
• peas - 458.5 thousand tonnes on 207.6 thousand ha (99%) with a yield of 22.1 c/ha;
• buckwheat - 2.4 thousand tonnes in 1.6 thousand ha (2%) with a yield of 14.4 centners/ha;
• millet - 9.5 thousand tonnes in 5.32 thousand hectares (6%) with a yield of 17.9 kg/ha;
• other cereals and leguminous crops - 827.7 thousand tonnes from 255.3 thousand hectares (72%) with a yield of 32.4 c/ha.

Vietnam: Vietnam Beer-Alcohol-Beverage Association requests amendments to draft on special consumption tax
|
Although the Vietnam Beer-Alcohol-Beverage Association supports the government's policy on amending the special consumption tax, it has suggested a reduction in the amount of tax to be increased and a reasonable extension of the timeline to stabilise the market, the Vietnam Investment Review reported on August 14.
At a conference themed, 'Tax Amendments to Promote Business Activities' hosted by VIR on August 14, Chu Thi Van Anh, vice-president and general secretary of Vietnam Beer-Alcohol-Beverage Association (VBA), gave the alcoholic beverage industry's perspective on the government's proposed increase in special consumption tax.
For alcoholic beverages such as beer and liquor, the Ministry of Finance (MoF) is currently considering two options for increasing the special consumption tax: a substantial immediate increase or a gradual increase. They are leaning towards the second option, which proposes a steady annual rise in tax rates starting in 2026, aiming to reach 100 per cent by 2030.
"The proposed increases are the highest in history, and businesses are unable to fully assess the potential impacts yet. The VBA recommends a gradual increase for alcohol based on three goals: health, economic and social impact, and historical context," said Van Anh.

India: Carlsberg doesn't see dramatic curbs on India liquor ads
|
Carlsberg doesn't expect any dramatic changes to rules for liquor ads in India, the brewer's CEO said on August 14, after reports the country is set to announce sweeping rules that will bar even so-called surrogate ads, Reuters reported.
India bans direct advertising of liquor, but companies often use surrogate ads that promote their brands more generally.
India's top civil servant for consumer affairs told Reuters this month that new rules were expected to be issued within a month that could bring fines for companies and bans for celebrities involved in misleading ads.
"It is not our impression that anything is given about a potential advertising ban," Carlsberg CEO Jacob Aarup-Andersen told Reuters in an interview.
Carlsberg promotes its Tuborg drinking water in India, with an ad showing film stars at a rooftop dance party and the slogan "Tilt Your World", which echoes its Tuborg beer ads elsewhere, emblazoned with the message: "Drink Responsibly".
Aarup-Andersen said anti-alcohol lobby groups in India had recently taken aim at surrogate ads, but that the industry had also been heard in the ongoing consultation process.

Middle East: Brewers say interest in zero-alcohol beers growing in Middle East
|
Egyptian Mohannad Abdelazeem, 35, doesn't drink alcohol. But he does consume three or four cans per day of Moussy and Fayrouz - alcohol-free beers, Yahoo Finance reported on August 15.
Brewers including Carlsberg and Anheuser-Busch InBev say interest is growing in such booze-free brews across the Middle East and North Africa, presenting opportunities in a region with some of the lowest alcohol consumption rates globally.
Reuters spoke to eight Egyptian consumers, shopkeepers or cafe owners - including Abdelazeem - who said they or their customers have recently switched to non-alcoholic beers, ditching U.S. soft drinks brands like Pepsi and Coca-Cola because they see them as supportive of Israel following its bombardment of Palestine.
PepsiCo, which acquired Israel-based SodaStream in 2018, and Coca-Cola did not respond to a request for comment.
There is also a broader shift in consumer tastes underway, some executives say.
AB InBev has seen demand for zero-alcohol brews rising among locals in some Middle Eastern countries, including Saudi Arabia, according to Jason Warner, its CEO for Europe and the Middle East. Sales to tourists and expatriates have also grown.

UK: Popularity of Madrí Excepcional eating into success of Carlsberg in the UK, CEO says
|
The popularity of lager brand Madrí Excepcional is eating into the success of Carlsberg in the UK, the CEO of the Danish brewer has told British newspaper The Telegraph.
Launched in UK pubs in 2020, the Madrí brand centres around Spanish culture, marketing itself as "the soul of Madrid".
That's despite the fact that the beer is actually brewed in the English county of Yorkshire by the Canadian-American multinational Molson Coors - which also owns Doom Bar, Carling, and Blue Moon.
According to data experts NIQ, Madrí Excepcional brought in annual sales of £93.3mn (€108.9mn) last year.
Molson Coors' website also notes that, in the second quarter of 2024, Madrí Excepcional generated the third highest sales revenue among all lagers sold in UK venues.
In response to these figures, CEO of rival brand Carlsberg, Jacob Aarup-Andersen, told The Telegraph: "We’re seeing a continued high competition in world beers. It's a fierce battleground in the UK.
"There's no doubt that one of the brands that is doing well in the UK is Madrí. If you look at the market share, they've done well. I think they found a good proposition there. So kudos, kudos to them."

UK: Birra Moretti overtakes Carling to become UK’s best-selling draught beer
|
Italian lager Birra Moretti has overtaken Carling to become the best-selling draught lager in the UK, according to recent research from CGA which shows that draught sales of Birra Moretti have grown over the last quarter, increasing 9.6%1 compared to the previous year, DRAM Scotland reported on August 13.
Total sales for this period hit £246.7m making the premium Italian lager the UK’s best-selling draught lager brand, taking the top spot from Carling.
HEINEKEN say that premiumisation is continuing to drive significant growth in on-trade revenue, with consumers opting to drink higher-quality products such as Birra Moretti in venues despite an overall decline in beer consumption.
Birra Moretti, which has recently been supported with a multimillion pound nationwide marketing campaign across the on- and off-trade, has also recently launched Birra Moretti Sale di Mare, an unfiltered premium lager which they say continues to grow, “resulting in soaring sales”.

Russia: Export duty on Russian barley remains zero
|
The export duty on Russian wheat, which has fallen for three straight weeks, will rise 3.2-fold to 828.4 rubles per tonne in the week starting August 21 from 257.3 rubles per tonne during the current seven-day period, the Agriculture Ministry said.
The duty on barley will remain zero and that on corn will triple to 1,033.6 rubles from 344.5 rubles per tonne.
Duty rates are based on indicative prices of $214.5 per tonne for wheat against $214.8 per tonne in the current period, $180.9 per tonne for barley versus $179.8 per tonne, and $205.2 per tonne for corn against $203.1 per tonne.
The duties will be valid until August 27, inclusive.
Russia introduced a grain damper mechanism on June 2, 2021, which provides for floating duties on the export of wheat, corn and barley and the return of funds received from them to subsidize agricultural producers. The duties are calculated weekly from indicators based on the prices of export contracts registered on the Moscow Exchange . Duty rates were calculated in dollars at first, and, since July 2022, in rubles. The duty is 70% of the difference between reference and indicative prices.
