Brewery news USA, TX: Talyard Brewing Co. getting ready to launch in Sugar Land in late September
A decadeslong friendship has culminated into Talyard Brewing Co., Sugar Land’s first major brewery that is set to open in late September, Community Impact reported on August 21.

Co-owners Chuck Laughter and Keith Teague met at a pool in their Sienna community over 20 years ago, they said.

With kids around the same age, their friendship was forged through backyard barbecues, community events and coaching Little League games, they said. They purchased plots and built homes right next to each other in Missouri City in 2007, Teague said.

Their bond has spanned generations, passing through their children to their collective 15 grandchildren, they said.

“The name Talyard means Teague and Laughter yard,” Teague said. “It's like the backyard, and all those good times we spent in our backyard. It really embodies what we wanted to create: a place for families and friends to gather and enjoy that vibe.”

The idea began with a passion for craft beer the friends developed throughout the early 2000s, Teague said. After years of pub crawls throughout Houston and road trips to breweries in the Texas Hill Country, Laughter had an idea to start a taproom in 2018, he said.

Delays due to the pandemic and city ordinance amendments proved purposeful, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, ID: Ruckus Brewing to open in Garden City by mid-September
A new brewery is set to open in Garden City, Boise Dev reported on August 22.

Ruckus Brewing, owned by Kyle Durham, is going into the old Loose Screw Brewing location at 4348 W. Chinden Boulevard.

Kyle Durham is a long-time homebrewer, who has been brewing beer for 20+ years.

“You don’t have to stick to a certain style parameter and just go outside and do whatever style you want to do,” he said. “Personally, that’s what I like, the creativity aspect of it. It’s part chemistry and part art.”

Last year, Durham won the Western Idaho Fair Beer of the Year contest with his Mexican lager. This beer, now branded as Mucha Lucha, was brewed and canned by Sockeye Brewing and is available to taste at the Western Idaho Fair.

Durham had been considering opening his own brewery for a while, and winning the Western Idaho Fair contest helped give him the boost to take that leap. He purchased the equipment from Loose Screw Brewing, leased out the former Loose Screw Brewing space next to Cobby’s, and has been working on renovating over the past several months.

“We’re just trying to keep it lively with TVs, and we’re going to try and get an outdoor ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Vault Brewing Co. to open its second location in downtown Easton
Vault Brewing Co., a popular Bucks County-based brewpub, is set to open its second location in downtown Easton this October, writes Ryan Kneller for WFMZ.

Located at 225 Ferry St., the new brewpub will occupy a soon-to-be renovated building, adding to Easton’s vibrant food and drink scene.

Founded in 2012 in Yardley, Vault Brewing has made a name for itself with unique craft beers and a menu that emphasizes locally sourced ingredients.

The Easton brew pub will offer a similar menu to its Yardley counterpart, featuring popular items like Buffalo cauliflower, wood-fired pizzas, and a variety of shareable snacks.

Though the new location won’t have a wood-fired oven, it will introduce new dishes alongside Vault’s signature offerings.

The Easton location will feature an open-concept layout with an industrial design, complete with an outdoor patio space.

Brewery news USA, MA: Arcpoint Brewing Company opens in Belchertown
Brewed with tenacity, poured with purpose.

The two slogans of Arcpoint Brewing Company, Belchertown’s first brewery located at 30 Front St., stand out in bright red letters against the blue grey walls painted the same color as the skins of the air force jets owners CJ Eldridge and Chris Peterson maintained during their first years at Westover Air Reserve Base together, Daily Hampshire Gazette reported on August 21.

While the sayings come from their military values, the brewery and taproom would have never laid roots in Belchertown without the persistence and determination of the two veterans and their business partner Dave Pare.

“I don’t think it’s really hit yet,” Peterson said about finally opening Arcpoint last weekend. “It’s just been so incredibly non-stop, the amount of hours that Dave and CJ have put in these past few weeks have been nuts.”

Peterson dreamed of opening a taproom since he started brewing a decade ago and asked his best friend to go into business with him two years later. When the two veterans finally got a loan and a location in 2019 — after the town approved a new bylaw to allow breweries, distilleries and wineries — the COVID-19 pandemic threw a wrench in their ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Sunset Reservoir Brewing Company closing after almost 10 years in business
A brewery in San Francisco is closing after almost 10 years in the city. Sunset Reservoir Brewing Company will be having its last day of service at the end of the month, the brewery announced on Instagram.

Fans of the brewery located at 1735 Noriega St. can have one more drink on its last day on Saturday, Aug. 31.

“We’ve had an amazing decade of love, memories, and award-winning brews! Over the next couple of weeks, we hope to create a few more unforgettable memories with all of you,” the brewery wrote on Instagram.

Some loyal and longtime customers are saddened by the closure, including one who had the brewery host their wedding.

“So sad!!” Thank you for being such an incredible host for our wedding,” one comment on the brewery’s Instagram post said.

“I’ve been coming here monthly for years,” said another comment on Instagram. “This breaks my heart. I will definitely come by for the last libation, or two, most likely three, but possibly four if asked nicely. You will be missed.”

Sunset Reservoir Brewing Co. opened in February of 2015, according to its Instagram page.

The closure of Sunset Reservoir Brewing Co. marks one of multiple changes happening in the neighborhood. As one business ...More info on site

Barley news Russia: Wheat production forecast up, barley and maize estimates down in Russia
SovEcon raised its Russian wheat production forecast and lowered estimates for barley and maize, APK-Inform reported on August 21.

‘The increase in the wheat crop estimate mainly reflects expectations of high, near-record yields in Siberia and the Urals. Although wet weather in these regions could complicate harvesting and potentially reduce quality, the proportion of unharvested area at the end of the campaign is expected to be close to average,’ the analysts explained.

At the same time, the forecast for the total grain harvest in Russia this year was lowered to 128.4 million tonnes from 130.5 million tonnes due to a lower forecast for the barley and maize crops.

"The barley crop estimate was lowered to 18.2 million tonnes from 19.3 million tonnes due to reduced sown areas and low yields in southern regions. The maize crop forecast has been reduced to 11.9 million tonnes from 13.4 million tonnes due to extremely adverse weather conditions in the south. The initial yield in Krasnodar region (3.5 tonnes/ha) is close to the record low,” the report says.

Thus, the corn harvest in Russia in 2024, according to experts, may decline to the lowest figure since 2018, when 11.4 million tonnes of grain were harvested.

Hops news The Czech Republic: Hop picking season starts in the Czech Republic
The season of hop picking has started in the Czech Republic, the third largest grower and exporter of hops in the world, Euronews reported on August 22.

Great news for beer lovers globally: the hop picking season has kicked off in the Czech Republic, the third largest grower and exporters of hops in the world.

The season of hop picking in the country started on 17 August, and is expected to last two weeks.

About 70 per cent of the harvest is destined for export, mostly to China and Japan.

While there has been a reduction in beer production since COVID-19, there has been a rise in demand for premium beers with higher hop content.

The current area of hop farms in the Czech Republic is 4,852 hectares, which is six hectares less than last year. The largest area is the Žatec region, where hops are grown on 3,718 hectares.

The agriculture ministry counts about 120 registered growers this year. Last year, hop growers in the Czech Republic harvested 6,997 tonnes of hops, according to data from the Central Agricultural Inspection and Testing Institute.

With the earliest record of its cultivation in the 11th century, hops is one of the country's most traditional and successful crops.

Brewery news South Korea & China: China beer continues struggling in Korea
The once-dominant Chinese beer has lost its foothold in Korea — due, experts say, to the lasting impact of a viral video that showed a man urinating into a tank at Tsingtao's brewery facility, Korea JoongAng Daily reported on August 21. China ranked fourth in beer exports to Korea over the first seven months of 2024 following Japan, the Netherlands and the United States, based on the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's imports data. The country fell to fourth place for the first time in 10 years, having claimed the top spot in 2022 with sales of $36.44 million. Its beer exports to Korea experienced a significant decline over the seven-month period, plummeting by 50.8 percent to $11.3 million compared to the same period of last year.

Most notably, major Chinese beer brand Tsingtao's sales in Korea have declined significantly due to concerns sparked by a viral video, posted last October, that appeared to show a brewery worker urinating into a beer vat. BK, Tsingtao's Korean importer, attempted to quell those fears by stating that the Tsingtao products sold in Korea were not produced at the facility. However, the assurances were insufficient to regain consumer trust; the importer’s sales ...More info on site

Barley news Ukraine: Barley exports could more than halve due to drop in demand from China
Ukraine could more than halve barley exports in September compared to August due to a drop in purchases of this crop by China, Ukrainian media reported, quoting analysts from First Ukrainian Agricultural Cooperative (FUAC), set up within the Ukrainian Agri Council (UAC) framework.

"The Ukrainian barley market is undergoing significant changes that affect export prospects. Preliminary predictions for September are worrisome. The volume of contracts for August is 600,000 tonnes, while only 280,000 tonnes are contracted for September," the FUAC analysts said.

They said the main reason for this was decline in demand from China, which used to account for more than half of Ukraine's barley exports.

"The Chinese factor plays a significant role here, as China previously accounted for 55-56% of the geographical structure of Ukrainian barley exports. China is not expected to return to the Ukrainian grain as actively, but will probably shift its focus to Australian barley, which will be received in December-January. Without Chinese contracts, monthly exports of Ukrainian barley will not exceed 300,000 tonnes," FUAC said.

It said such a reduction in demand from China was already beginning to be felt in the domestic market: some traders are already stopping barley acceptance, switching to other crops, such as corn.

Brewery news Uganda: Uganda Breweries Limited announces immediate price reduction for its iconic Pilsner Lager
In a strategic move to increase market share and reward loyal customers, Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL) has announced a significant price reduction for its iconic Pilsner Lager beer brand. Effective immediately, the recommended retail price for Pilsner Lager has been cut to UGX 3,000, making it more accessible to a wider range of consumers, PML Daily reported on August 20.

According to Edgar Kihumuro, Pilsner Lager Brand Manager, the price reduction is part of UBL’s ongoing efforts to support local business growth and make its locally produced products more affordable. “This move aims to extend the spirit of celebration to our customers, who can now enjoy their favorite high-quality beer at a reduced price,” Kihumuro said.

Pilsner Lager, a premium beer in Uganda’s market, has driven business expansion due to its high quality and broad appeal. The price cut is expected to increase sales and encourage consumers to take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy the distinctive taste and craftsmanship of Pilsner Lager at a more affordable price.

Industry analysts see this move as a strategic response to increasing competition in the beer market and a bid to maintain UBL’s market share. The price reduction is expected to boost sales and reinforce Pilsner ...More info on site
