USA, NJ: Skinny Flowers Brewery Co. coming to Fort Monmouth
|
Construction is underway to turn a 6,000-square-foot portion of Fort Monmouth’s RiverWalk Center into a new brewery and tap room, expected to open by the end of this year, The Two River Times reported on August 29.
It’s the first brick-and-mortar venture by Jim and Liz King, who recently moved to Monmouth Beach from Little Silver. They formed Skinny Flowers Brewery Co. about a year ago and have since been visiting other breweries and “learning as much as we could about the business before we opened,” said Jim King, who started the company after retiring from CIBC Capital Markets.
“My wife Liz and I have always been fans of craft beer and the community that forms around it,” he said of the couple’s motivation to start a brewery business. He declined to elaborate on the origins of the name Skinny Flowers, indicating that it will be revealed at a later date. The Kings have signed a long-term lease for the space with options for renewal, he said.
“It’s a magnificent space with 25-foot-high ceilings,” said RiverWalk Center developer Michael Abboud, adding no local variances or additional approvals are required from the municipality for the brewery use. “The entire perimeter is nearly

Canada: Carlsberg launches 1664 Rosé beer in Canada
|
Canadians are enjoying the summer through rosé coloured glasses this year as Carlsberg launches an exciting new innovation, and a first for Canada: rosé beer, Yahoo Finance reported on August 29.
In the season of pink drinks, 1664 Rosé is right on time with their new wheat beer that boasts a hint of citrus, peach, and subtle notes of coriander with an added touch of red berries that's light on the palate. This refreshing take on the year-round favourite 1664 Blanc is also served in the iconic blue bottle.
"It's the best of two beloved and sophisticated libations: a beautiful glass of rosé and a refreshing, premium beer. If you can't decide on one, 1664 Rosé gives you both," said the director of marketing at Carlsberg Canada, Chad Abdo.
1664 Rosé was introduced to the fashion community earlier this season as the title sponsor of Fashion Art Toronto's 1664 Fashion Week, which kicked-off the summer of pink, from style to drinks.
"We are champions of bold style choices and individuality in fashion, especially those that showcase unique style twists, which is why 1664 Rosé is a playful twist on flavour and design," said Abdo.
Bartenders and cocktail experts are also recommending 1664 Rosé for

Canada, BC: Vancouver Island Brewing shutting down their Government Street brewery in Victoria
|
As of November 1st, Vancouver Island Brewing (VIB) will be shutting down their Government Street brewery in Victoria due to a rent hike of 35% and other cost pressures, Victoria Buzz reported on August 28.
However, they will still be producing beer via their competitor just down the street at Phillips Brewing & Malting Company.
As for the taproom, it will be closed as of September 14th.
VIB noted in their announcement that there will be no ownership structure change, internally or at Phillips.
Phillips will simply be contract brewing their beers, as they have done for many breweries throughout the years.
They say that by outsourcing production and packaging to Phillips, VIB can still ensure their core beers can still be produced.
Vancouver Islanders will still be able to find Islander Lager, Mystic Haze and Broken Islands Hazy IPA in certain liquor stores throughout Victoria.
Going forward, production oversight will be carried out by VIB’s General Manager, Thom Riley.
“After 40 years of serving the craft beer community on Vancouver Island and beyond, it was important for us to find a craft brewery whose operators also have deep, local roots and whose commitment to excellence and quality matches our own,”

USA, SC: Fatty's Beer Works to permanently close in Charleston
|
David McLain cited downtown's real estate market as one of the reasons he's closing his eight-year-old brewery in Charleston, Post and Courier reported on August 28.
That, coupled with the need for more production space, led McLain to the decision to shutter Fatty's Beer Works' taproom. But the popular brewery isn't going away completely.
The brewery will end its tenure at 1436 Meeting Street Road in late September, McLain said on social media. The decreasing taproom attendance that's been reported by other local brewers was among the reasons he came to the decision.
"We are dealing with extraordinary economic times right now and the complexion of the downtown Charleston real estate market has become quite a challenge," he said.
Fatty's is the second downtown Charleston brewery to close in as many months.
Tradesman Brewing Co., whose beers have won 13 national awards, shuttered Aug. 18. The owners said the taproom closure was a mutual decision between the brewery's ownership group and their landlord. They are currently searching for a space to house a new taproom and will continue South Carolina distribution of beers through a contract brewing partnership in town.
Fatty's Beer Works will do the same.

Vietnam: Heineken reaffirms commitment to further invest in the Vietnamese market
|
Heineken will further invest in the Vietnamese market in the coming time, Managing Director of Heineken Vietnam Wieste Mutters said during a meeting with National Assembly Vice Chairman Nguyen Duc Hai in Hanoi on August 30, VovWorld reported.
He thanked the Vietnamese legislature for its pro-business policies and expressed hope for continued supportive policies from Vietnamese ministries and agencies.
Vice Chairman Hai lauded Heineken Vietnam's impressive track record spanning more than three decades, saying that it has been instrumental in fostering Vietnam-Netherlands and Vietnam-EU partnerships.
He praised Heineken Vietnam for its practical contributions to environmental sustainability, social responsibility, and advocacy for "responsible drinking".
Mr. Hai offered assurances that the Vietnamese NA will support and create a legal framework conducive to the operations of both domestic and foreign businesses, including those from Europe. Vietnam will continue to refine its legal system in line with international practices and commitments and stay open to the firms’ ideas, he said.

Uganda: Brewers grappling with rapidly changing consumer landscape in Uganda
|
Ugandan brewers, once able to rely on customer loyalty to single products, are now grappling with a rapidly changing consumer landscape. The challenge lies in a young and increasingly fickle drinker base, coupled with tough economic conditions that are forcing consumers to cut back on spending, the Daily Monitor reported on August 29.
Historically, local beer drinkers were known for their brand loyalty. However, the rise of a dynamic youth population, evolving social lifestyles, and heightened competition in Uganda’s alcohol market have created a diverse pool of young drinkers with shifting preferences.
More than half of Uganda’s population, estimated at 45.9 million, is under the age of 35, according to preliminary results of the latest national population and housing census conducted in May this year.
The local alcohol market is dominated by two European multinationals, but a steady influx of smaller players producing spirits and wines targeted at young consumers has triggered fierce competition in the market.
“We have seen a growing preference for drinking choices driven by different occasions. For example, some people choose to drink Tusker Lite on Monday because they’ve got a busy day ahead but will settle for a Johnny Walker on Friday while hanging out with friends. The same

Japan: Suntory completes Hakushu Distillery enhancements
|
Suntory’s Hakushu Distillery has brought yeast cultivation in-house and introduced floor malting as part of a year-long site renewal project, The Drinks Business reported on August 27.
The Japanese multinational has announced today that the renewal of its Yamanashi Prefecture-based whisky distillery will be completed in September 2024. The project had been under way since last year.
Suntory has introduced yeast cultivation at Hakushu, located at the foot of Mt. Kaikomagatake in the Japanese Southern Alps. Yeast is essential to whisky production. By cultivating yeast at its in-house facilities, the company aims to continuously obtain high quality yeast, the company said in a press release.
Floor malting will also become part of the distillery’s production process. The technique is a traditional process for malting barley, where once the barley has been soaked in water, it is spread out on the malting floor where it is shoveled or raked to expose it to oxygen in the air and encourage uniform germination. This method will enable Suntory to malt barley in various conditions.
Hakushu Distillery was established in 1973 and celebrated its 50th anniversary last year. The site creates whiskies that differ from that of Yamazaki Distillery, due to their differing climates and locations as well

North Korea: North Korea taps into beer exports to boost foreign currency earnings
|
North Korea’s Kyonghung Unhasu Beverage Factory has begun aggressive efforts to earn foreign currency through exports as it ramps up beer production, Dailynk.com reported on August 30.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, a source in Pyongyang told Daily NK on August 26 that the factory “recently developed a variety of beer products, including bottled beer, canned beer and packaged draft beer, and started shipping them in late July.”
The factory significantly increased beer production by reassigning two work teams to the task. In August, the factory held a meeting at which workers were urged to move up the shipping date from the previously scheduled date “so that there are no obstacles to exports,” the source said.
The factory has recently been focusing on beer production because of a government order to expand foreign exchange earnings through beer exports. “In early June, the factory received a government order asking it to expand exports by diversifying beer products and increasing production,” the source said.
North Korean authorities ordered the factory to increase exports with two main goals. First, they wanted to promote the country’s beer industry internationally by making North Korean beer more accessible to foreigners, including those who had visited as tourists and those
