Hops news USA, OR: Willamette Valley hops growers struggle as demand for beer continues to fall
Oregon’s aromatic hop harvest has a bitter note this year.

As beer fans await the return of fresh hop beers to local breweries, growers in the Salem area and Willamette Valley are struggling amid a rapid decline in demand for their crop, the Salem Reporter said on September 6.

The amount of hops grown in Oregon declined 18% this year compared to 2023, with 5,591 acres planted statewide. Farmers are instead leaving fields unplanted or switching to other crops to diversify their

Hops acreage has declined nearly a third from a recent 2018 peak of 8,216 acres, according to data from the Oregon Hops Commission.

The culprit is a shift in drinking habits that has people seeking out less craft beer. Virtually all hops are used to bitter and flavor beer.

The aftereffects of a pandemic supply glut are also still playing out.

For growers like Sodbuster Farms, a fourth-generation farm just north of Keizer, it means leaving nearly 100 acres fallow this year.

Erica Lorentz, the farm’s co-owner and president, said they’re harvesting 730 acres this year while leaving about 90 acres that had previously grown hops idle. Because of the trellis required to string the hops, Lorentz said it’s often too labor intensive to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Spent Grain Brewing on tap to open in Arlington Heights later this year
Arlington Heights’ first brewery will be only blocks from where owner Eric Lamkins has been crafting his own suds for years, Daily Herald reported on September 4.

The home-brewer — also a beekeeper and marketing/graphic design chief — will make small batches of beer at Spent Grain Brewing, which is on tap to open later this year at 17 N. Vail Ave.

Village trustees this week granted the new business permission to operate a brew pub in the downtown — a zoning change years in the making, amid old sets of regulations at village hall — while applauding Lamkins and his wife Heather Henkel for their commitment to the local business community. Spent Grain will be around the block from Henkel’s Kilwins confectionery store.

A so-called nano brewery, Spent Grain’s operations will all be within the confines of the 2,500-square-foot former Bangkok Cafe restaurant space. A selection of 16 types of beer and seltzers — each crafted in single-barrel, 30-gallon batches — will be on the menu.

So will smaller pours of whiskey, wine from Vintages Wine Shop in downtown Arlington Heights, and Arlington Club soda from the Arlington Heights Historical Museum.

German sausages will be from the local Thuringer Meats butcher shop, while the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Sky Puppy Brewing to open its doors in Tampa on September 13
Nearly three years after getting the keys to Ybor City’s historic Tampa Fire Station No. 2 building, Danielle Vergnaud-McKinnon and her husband Matthew McKinnon will finally open their new brewery to the public, CLTampa.com reported on September 3.

Sky Puppy Brewing, located at 1313 E 8th Ave, opens on Friday, Sept. 13, Matthew’s birthday.

At recent soft opening nights, Sky Puppy featured a dozen beers on tap, along with four natural wines by the glass. Beer styles created with Sky Puppy’s seven-barrel SS Brew Tech system included Mexican lager, hazy IPA and hazy DIPA, Czech pilsner, Belgian wit, two Florida weisses, and a sweet stout.

On September 3, Matthew—a local home brewer and professional brewe who’s worked on teams at TBBC & Coppertail—told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay that all the beers from the soft opening will be available when doors open. Two more stouts—a vanilla cold brew coffee stout and peanut butter stout—may also be ready along with a Munich dunkel.

Beer lovers are in for a treat when they open the heavy fireproof doors at Sky Puppy. The interior, which can accommodate about 45 people, was designed by Danielle and features high ceilings, comfortable booths and tables, plus a small bartop and common ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Space Cadet Brewing Company launching in Philadelphia next month
Philadelphia's newest craft brewery is launching next month, Axios reported on September 3.

Space Cadet Brewing Company will become the latest to join the city's growing beer scene.

The brewery is headed by Richie Tevlin, a classically trained brewer whose worked at Victory Brewing Company and Philadelphia Brewing Company

Tevlin says he is brewing in single, small batch one-offs, which he won't repeat again.

He is planning to release a new beer monthly.

A launch party for the new beer is set for Nov. 1 at Brewerytown's Boozy Mutt.

Tevlin says he hopes to open a taproom and production facility in the region.

Brewery news USA, VA: Route 7 Brewing about to open in Ashburn
Ashburn is about to welcome its newest microbrewery when Route 7 Brewing opens. The freshly renovated 4,800-square-foot space promises to be a community staple after recent brewery closures in the area, Northern Virginia Magazine reported on September 6.

Named after the state highway from Winchester to Alexandria, Route 7 Brewing is the passion project of co-founders Basabi Virmani and Ambar Sharma.

Virmani, a former systems analyst, first met Sharma, an information technology consultant, 10 years ago while fundraising for nonprofits like the American Cancer Society and Stop Soldier Suicide. The pair became fast friends, bonding over their love for volunteerism and craft beer.

“I always wanted to open a restaurant, and Ambar is a homebrewer and always wanted to open a brewery,” says Virmani.

“It was a real meeting of minds,” says Sharma.

Although initially scheduled to open earlier this year, inclement weather created some unexpected snags. Last December, while in transport from British Colombia, the truck carrying the brewery’s specialized brew tanks accidentally slipped off the road, damaging the equipment beyond repair. The driver survived unscathed, but Virmani and Sharma were forced to wait until new tanks could be delivered.

The new microbrewery is a welcome addition to Ashburn ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Outcast Brewing Company to open its doors in St. Petersburg next week
A building that once housed two popular breweries is re-opening its doors under a new LLC and ownership this month, Creative Loafing Tampa Bay reported on September 5.

Outcast Brewing Company will open at 1776 11th Ave. N in St. Petersburg next week, out of the building where King State’s The Brutalist and Flying Boat Brewery once operated.

Richie and Jill Hamm purchased the large St. Pete parcel earlier this year and have spent the last several months renovating and decorating their new craft brewery, music venue and hangout spot.

According to its social media, Outcast Brewing Company will celebrate its grand opening on Friday, Sept. 13 from 2 p.m.-midnight.

Richie Hamm, a Pensacola native who relocated to The ‘Burg with his family a few years ago, tells Creative Loafing Tampa Bay that Outcast is a "brewery that feels more than just a brewery," due to its variety of beverage options and entertainment experiences.

Outcasts’s Head Brewer Scott Roche has over 25 years of experience in cities like Buffalo and New Orleans, and plans to bring a wide range of craft beers to the new St. Pete brewery.

Hamm’s personal favorites are Roche’s German-style So Clean Kölsch and crisp Skyway Lager, but says that there will ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, SC: Over The Horizon becomes Charleston’s newest brewery
Located in the Charleston space formerly occupied by Brewlab, Over The Horizon (OTH) is the city’s newest brewery, serving beer, food and a gathering space for local veterans, Charleston City Paper reported on September 6.

OTH is owned by Citadel grads James Browning, Chris Houston and Scotty Sheriff, all of whom wanted to start a brewery and jumped at the chance to move into the space at 2200 Heriot Street.

Houston and Sheriff have experience owning and operating restaurants (including Big John’s Tavern), which can help with running a brewery that has a full kitchen.

“We have a restaurant background, so we’re able to run it a little more like a restaurant that’s making its own beer,” Houston said. “And we’re also more pub-focused than distribution-focused.”

Guests can order from a menu that features Detroit-style pizza, a variety of french fries and a couple of salads. Between the menu, the space, which includes a fenced-in outdoor area and an adjoining custard business (more on that in a bit), OTH is incredibly family-friendly.

It’s not so family-friendly, though, that adults can’t have a good time, too. With a bevy of TVs and an outdoor stage, the spot is perfect for football viewing and catching some live ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MD: Oliver Brewing Company to move to Anne Arundel County's Millersville
Longtime brewery Oliver Brewing Company will leave its northeast Baltimore property for a site in Anne Arundel County's Millersville, where it plans to expand its offerings, WMAR reported on September 5.

Oliver Brewing started out in the basement of Pratt Street Ale House in 1993, before moving to its current location, off of Sinclair Lane, in 2013.

"We're bursting at the seams [on Shannon Drive]," said Justin Dvorkin, co-owner of 206 Restaurant Group, which also runs Pratt Street Ale House and several other bars/restaurants.

The new location is at 8370 Jumpers Hole Road and will feature plenty of parking, an outdoor beer garden, and food alongside beer.

Dvorkin noted that the brewery isn't leaving Baltimore until May.

He said they've been searching for years to buy a property, having rented this whole time. (Their 10-year lease is running out at the Shannon Drive facility.)

Dvorkin also countered online claims or implications that they have something against Baltimore City.

"That's not the message we're putting out there, and Pratt Street [Ale House] is never leaving there... We've been in Baltimore since our inception [in 1993]," he said, adding about Pratt Street: "We love it. We love downtown."

The larger company, 206 Restaurant Group, already has plenty of connections to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Alamo Beer Co. wighing sale of its brewery in San Antonio
Another San Antonio craft-beer company may be on the verge of tapping out, San Antonio Current reported on September 6.

Faced with flat sales, Alamo Beer Co. owner Eugene Simor told the Express-News that he's weighing whether to unload all or part of the business or sell its brewery in the hot Dignowity Hill area east of downtown.

A recent sales listing for 2 acres of Alamo Beer's property at 202 Lamar St. notes that it "can be sold individually or in conjunction with Alamo Brewery complex including including Brewery, Beer Hall and Beer Garden."

“The real estate value has escalated much faster than the distribution side of business,” Simor told the Express-News. “We are exploring options for other uses on the prime site next to downtown, the Hays Street Bridge and much more development.”

Simor, who founded Alamo Beer in 1997, told the daily he's also scouting for investors who can help reorganize the company and get it back on a growth trajectory.

Even though Alamo Beer's 40,000-barrel-a-year capacity makes it San Antonio's largest brewery, Simor told the daily it's only producing 7,600 barrels annually.

The business tried to increase production through a deal last fall to brew suds for fellow San Antonio craft brand ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AR: Diamond Bear Brewery to be up for auction unless suitable offer received beforehand
Diamond Bear Brewery of North Little Rock will be up for auction in October unless owner Russ Melton gets a suitable offer beforehand, Arkansas Business reported on September 4.

Melton told us back in May that several people had inquired about the property at 600 N. Broadway and that he’d considered selling the property and leasing it back.

If Melton doesn’t find a buyer, Blackmon Auctions and Thomas Blackmon Realty will auction the property and the 15,435 square-foot brewery on Friday, Oct. 25 at 9 a.m.

Melton, 67, told Arkansas Business that he’s interested in retiring, but the sale doesn’t necessarily mean the award-winning craft brewery will close. He said he sees it going one of four ways:

The new owner (call him “John Doe”) will buy the property and Diamond Bear will lease it from him. • John Doe will buy the property and Diamond Bear will stay for a few months before moving somewhere else. • John Doe will buy it and also buy the brewery. • John Doe will buy the property, Diamond Bear will operate for a couple of months and the board may decide to sell the equipment and liquidate.

Melton, who previously worked for Michelin Tires, opened ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Greats Flats Brewing set to close on September 29
Schenectady is losing one of its breweries. Greats Flats Brewing is set to close on September 29 after seven and a half years. The brewery announced the closure in a Facebook post on September 4.

“Building out this space, building our community, and of course, brewing lots of beer has been quite the adventure, and we’re very grateful for all the friendships, cool people and amazing times we’ve had along the way,” read the post.

Great Flats is a New York State Farm Brewery, meaning their beers are produced with New York State-grown ingredients. The brewery doesn’t serve food (unless there’s a food truck), so guests can bring in their own food.

“Over the next month, we/you have one super important job to do: drink all the beer,” said Great Flats. The brewery will still be hosting trivia, food trucks, and other events during its last few weeks.

Great Flats Brewing is located at 151 Lafayette Street in Schenectady. The brewery is open Wednesday through Friday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday from noon to 9 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. Great Flats will be closed on September 6 and only open from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on September ...More info on site

Whisky news India: India eyeing $1 bln export opportunity from alcoholic, non-alcoholic drinks
Amid a rise in demand for Indian liquor, India’s government is eyeing $1 billion in exports from alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages over the next few years, The Indian Express reported on September 4.

The Agricultural and Processed Food Export Development Authority (APEDA), which comes under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, said they have plans to promote Indian alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages in the international markets.

“It (APEDA) is potentially eyeing $1 billion in export revenue over the next few years. APEDA as part of the ‘Make in India’ initiative has been targeting to increase exports of Indian Spirits to major foreign destinations,” said a statement issued by the commerce ministry.

India currently ranks 40th in the world for alcoholic beverage exports. The country’s exported beverages worth over Rs 2,200 crore in FY24. The major destinations include the UAE, Singapore, Netherlands, Tanzania, Angola, Kenya and Rwanda.

APEDA also said in a landmark development for Indian spirits, Diageo India (United Spirits Ltd), among the country’s leading alco-bev companies, is set to launch Godawan in the United Kingdom, an artisanal single malt whisky made in Rajasthan.

Godawan is produced under the Make in India initiative of the Government of India with an investment exceeding Rs 200 crore.

Whisky news India: Pernod Ricard exploring sale of its popular Imperial Blue whisky brand
French spirits giant Pernod Ricard is exploring the sale of its popular Imperial Blue whisky brand in India, aiming to shift its focus towards premium offerings like Glenlivet, Jameson, and Chivas Regal, according to a report by Livemint.

The world's second-largest spirits company has enlisted Goldman Sachs to facilitate the sale, which could fetch up to Rs 5,000 crore, the report said citing sources. The sale process began about three weeks ago, it added.

Imperial Blue, which sells 20 million cases annually in India, could draw interest from private equity firms and other alcohol industry players, though the process is still in its early stages.

The potential sale of Imperial Blue comes two years after Pernod Ricard's competitor, Diageo, divested several low-margin brands, including Haywards, Honey Bee, and Romanov. This trend underscores the shift among multinational liquor companies towards premium brands that, despite lower sales volumes, yield higher profits.

Imperial Blue, originally part of The Seagram Co Ltd portfolio, became a Pernod Ricard brand in 2001 after the French company Diageo acquired Seagram's global spirits and wine businesses. The brand competes with other popular whiskies in India, such as McDowell’s No1 from Diageo and Officer's Choice from Allied Blenders and Distillers.

Despite Imperial Blue's significant ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Heineken 0.0 most popular alcohol-free beer in Australia
Since launching to market in October 2018, Heineken 0.0 has firmly established itself as the most popular alcohol-free beer among Australian consumers, a fact evidenced by its consistent upwards growth trajectory and by its impressive trophy cabinet. This includes having won all but one of the Fan Favourite Non-Alcoholic Beer awards since the Australian Drinks Awards added the category in 2021, Drinks Trade reported on September 6.

Despite losing to Great Northern Zero in last year’s awards, Heineken 0.0 has once again clinched the title of Australia’s most loved alcohol-free beer.

Drinks Trade reached out to Rachel Ellerm, Marketing Director at Lion Australia, to discuss what sets Heineken 0.0 apart from its competitors.

Drinks Trade: Heineken beat a lot of its competitors to the non-alc beer market… How important has this been to its success?

Rachel Ellerm: Heineken 0.0 was not the first non-alc beer to launch in Australia. A small non-alcohol beer segment, dominated by Coopers Ultra Light Birrell launched in the 80s, had existed for some years prior to Heineken 0.0’s launch in 2018. Having said that, launching Heineken 0.0 in Australia definitely injected energy and interest into the category, taking it to new heights.

Heineken 0.0’s success was driven by two ...More info on site

Barley news Russia: Export duty on Russian barley remains zero
The export duty on Russian wheat will fall nearly 19% to 906.4 rubles per tonne in the week starting September 11 from 1,115.7 rubles per tonne during the current seven-day period, the Agriculture Ministry said.

The duty on barley will remain zero and that on corn will fall to 502.7 rubles from 724.5 rubles per tonne.

Duty rates are based on indicative prices of $214.3 per tonne for wheat against $214.1 per tonne in the current period, $180.7 per tonne for barley versus $178.7 per tonne, and $195.4 per tonne for corn against $195.7 per tonne.

The duties will be valid until September 17, inclusive.

Russia introduced a grain damper mechanism on June 2, 2021, which provides for floating duties on the export of wheat, corn and barley and the return of funds received from them to subsidize agricultural producers.
