USA, TX: Paris Brewing Company only a few day away from official opening
|
The much-anticipated opening of Paris Brewing Company is only a few days away, MyParisTexas reported on September 9.
The rehabilitation of the 108-year old space in downtown Paris took longer than the team expected but after several years of renovations and perfecting their brew, Paris Brewing Co. will officially open its doors to the public on Sept. 12, 2024.
Owners Aaron Raper, Ben Wheeler, and Ryan Matthews believe that having high-quality food is crucial but also that the environment and feeling that customers get when they enter the establishment is just as important.
“Every aspect of this business is a representation of the love and respect we have for our community. We are sons of Paris, Texas – collectively raised by this community, shaped, and molded by it. We want to create a common ground for the community and visitors to gather.”
“A lot of effort was put into defining what Paris Brewing Company will represent, what it will mean for our community, and what we want it to feel like for our customers when they visit us,” said the team. “We want it to be more than just another small brewery on the map – it’s gotta be about family, friends, and

USA, NC: Oden Brewing Company eyes fall opening in Wilmington’s historic district
|
Jan Oden will be going before the Historic Preservation Commission this week to get approval on changes to a century-old building in the historic district, Port City Daily reported on September 10.
Construction is underway at 116 Dock St. in downtown Wilmington to adapt the former New Anthem Brewery into Oden Brewing Company. Its flagship opened in Greensboro in 2019.
“We hope to be open by mid-October,” Oden said Monday, as she fumbled through papers laying out the building’s history.
Since 1915, the location has been occupied by multiple uses, including a horse stable at the turn of the 20th century, followed by an automotive dealership and repair shop, an upholstery business, canning and packing facility, and wholesale market for feed and groceries.
Today, it’s parsed into multiple units, the majority of which are vacation condos, with the brewery fronting Dock Street.
The Odens have been on the hunt for the right spot to scale a second location; Bill and Jan have lived in Wilmington since the early 1980s. Today, along with their children, Mary Garner and well-known local artist Char, the family shuffles between the Triad and Port City to run the brewery.
In 2021, they were considering a larger space in the

USA, CO: New Belgium assumes production of premium Japanese Kirin Ichiban and Kirin Light beers
|
Having converted to MicroStar’s shared-keg model in 2018, New Belgium will now add Kirin’s line of premium Japanese beers in order to benefit from a more cost-efficient, sustainable and flexible keg supply chain solution, Yahoo Finance reported on September 9.
Kirin brands will be available in MicroStar-branded kegs in the U.S. beginning in January 2025.
These brands bring additional scale and growth to the New Belgium platform, complementing the #1 U.S. craft brand family by volume. Kirin joins the rapidly growing Voodoo Ranger portfolio, Fat Tire – America’s first certified carbon neutral beer and all of Bell’s highly-acclaimed brands including Two Hearted IPA - frequently voted the best beer in America - and Oberon Ale.
“We are committed to adopting human-powered business practices in everything we do, and this extends to how we choose our supplier partners,” said Shaun Belongie, New Belgium’s CEO. “MicroStar’s teams share our values and operate like an extension of our breweries which is incredibly important as we continue to grow. Additionally, MicroStar’s dense global network of shareable kegs shortens the distance empty kegs travel compared to the traditional owned keg model, lowering our greenhouse gas emissions supporting our sustainability mission.”
“Having worked closely with New Belgium

USA, WI: Bull Falls Brewing Company to close for good later this month
|
Wausau’s Bull Falls Brewing Company will close for good later this month, WSAU reported on September 6.
According to a Facebook post, the tap room will close for good on the evening of Monday, September 16th. Closing weekend specials will begin on Saturday the 14th.
Bull Falls Brewing opened in 2007 with its first Oktoberfest Lager. They tripled their operation in 2013, though fell on hard times in the years that followed. Oweners previously said that expansion was supposed to help them expand their distribution footprint, but that didn’t happen “for a variety of reasons,” and made it difficult for them to operate at their current scale.
The Brewery had been on shaky ground for the last two years. According to a post from May, there have been at least three different attempts to purchase the brewery that have fallen through. Last year the City Council approved a plan to auction some of the brewery’s equipment to satisfy the terms of a low-interest loan, which at the time had about $300,000 left to pay.

USA, NY: Great Flats Brewing to close after seven years in business
|
After seven years, Great Flats Brewing on Lafayette Street in Schenectady will be closing up shop on Sept. 29, The Daily Gazette reported on September 9.
“Building out this space, building our community, and of course, brewing lots of beer has been quite the adventure, and we’re very grateful for all the friendships, cool people and amazing times we’ve had along the way,” reads a Facebook post from the brewery.
Named after the aquifer that supplies the city with its drinking water, Great Flats opened in 2017 and is owned by Harry Whalen and Tom Owens. The former is married to Haley Whalen, who owns Arthur’s Market in the Stockade.
The taproom will be open 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, noon to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. Previously planned trivia, food truck, and other events are still on the docket.

USA, CO: Riff Raff Brewing Company announces closure of original downtown Pagosa Springs location
|
Riff Raff Brewing Company (RRBC) has announced the closure of its original downtown Pagosa Springs location at 274 Pagosa Street on September 30, 2024.
After 11 successful and memorable years bringing craft food and beer to the heart of downtown Pagosa Springs, RRBC will consolidate operations to its riverside location at Riff Raff on the Rio at 356 East Pagosa Street, while it continues to serve valued customers with the same dedication to quality and community.
The Rio location, the new primary hub for all Riff Raff Brewing activities, will offer an expanded selection of signature food dishes and brews along with the relaxed atmosphere and stunning views on the banks of the San Juan River. The original Riff Raff Brewing location will still host a small amount of brewing activities for RRBC.
“We look forward to the next chapter for Riff Raff Brewing Company,” said Jason Cox, co- founder and Chief Executive Officer at Riff Raff Brewing Company. “This move allows us to strengthen our core while providing an opportunity for a new venture in the original Riff Raff building.”
Local restauranteurs Bart Schidecker and Christie Bonamassa will take over Riff Raff Brewing’s downtown space in late October. Known for their popular Pagosa

USA, NY: The North Brewery to close for good on September 14
|
A craft brewing operation that was a fixture on Endicott's Washington Avenue for more than a decade is closing, WNBF reported on September 9.
The North Brewery has announced plans to end operations. Co-owner Zack Pedley told WNBF News that he and his partners decided "it's just the right time for us."
The business operated in a building that had been occupied for decades by Elk's Bake Shop. The Pedley family acquired the property to launch the craft brewing business in 2012.
The North Brewery's decision to shut down generated an outpouring of online support from customers who expressed disappointment and wished the operators of the business the best.
The partners decided to close The North after "several months of consideration." They said it was an "absolute blast" to make and serve their "creative beers over the last 12 years."
Pedley said the business will close its doors on Saturday, September 14 evening.
The North Brewery shutdown is coming as an $11 million reconstruction project on Washington Avenue enters its final phase.
Pedley said while "construction didn't help" matters it wasn't the primary reason for the decision to close.
Only two months ago, Pedley expressed concern about the ability of The Avenue's businesses to survive the long street

USA, WY: Bitter Creek Brewing announces immediate closure
|
Bitter Creek Brewing announced on September 9 it is closing its doors for good after 27 years in business. The closure is effective immediately, Sweet Water Now reported.
“It has been our pleasure to serve you and the downtown area for the last 27 years,” the restaurant’s post on Facebook read. “The owners have decided to retire.”
Bitter Creek Brewing was first established in 1997 by Jane and Larry Caller, and it has since been a staple in Downtown Rock Springs. The restaurant thanked their patrons for supporting them through the years, but stated it is time for the building to be used for a new dream.
“It is never easy to say goodbye to a business we have loved,” the post said. “The building and assets are now for sale to a new generation of entrepreneurs to use the space for their dreams and provide a new adventure for the people of Sweetwater County to gather and enjoy.”
Downtown Rock Springs wrote on Facebook that they are sorry to see them go but congratulated the Callers on their retirement.

The Netherlands & Greece: Heineken forced to defend damages claims from commercial rivals in Greece
|
Heineken faced a major legal reckoning in a Netherlands court last week, as the beer giant finally answers claims from rivals, including MTB, of institutionalized market abuse in Greece, Business Wire reported on September 9.
The Dutch multinational’s court appearance on Tuesday (3 September, 2024) followed years of legal wrangling in the Netherlands and Greece and numerous failed attempts by Heineken to get the case thrown out.
The €160 million+ claim brought by Macedonian Thrace Brewery (MTB), an independent Greek competitor, could create a dangerous precedent for Heineken, which faces a near identical claim from Carlsberg. Heineken has been sanctioned repeatedly for market abuses in the EU and elsewhere around the world.
In 2015, the Greek competition authority ruled that Heineken’s subsidiary Athenian Brewery bullied and cajoled retailers and wholesalers in Greece to favour its products and to suppress competition between 1998 and 2014, in breach of European and Greek antitrust laws. Heineken denies any knowledge of Athenian Brewery’s anticompetitive conduct and still refuses to acknowledge that it broke any law in Greece, despite these abuses having been confirmed on appeal at every level. The company, headquartered in the Netherlands, disclosed in its last Annual Report that it had recognised a potential liability

UK: Carlsberg takeover of Britvic investigated by competition watchdog
|
A competition watchdog has begun an investigation into Carlsberg's £3.3 bln agreement to buy soft drinks company Britvic, best known for Robinsons squash and J2O, BBC reported on September 10.
The Danish brewer said it wanted create a single beverage company called Carlsberg Britvic to grow its business in the UK and western Europe.
However, Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has been investigating potential concerns that it could reduce competition across the UK market.
Britvic, external, which is based in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, had previously rejected a £3.1bn bid, but both companies announced an agreement in July.
The two drinks giants said the integration of Carlsberg's array of beers with Britvic's soft drinks would create an "enlarged international group" that could expand into "multiple drinks sectors".
The CMA said it planned on gathering information before kickstarting a formal investigation.
CMA is a competition watchdog which looks into concerns such as whether a merger or takeover could result in market dominance at the expense of consumers with higher prices, lower quality products or less choice for customers.
People have been invited to have their say on the potential impact it could have on competition in the UK and submit their thoughts to the watchdog.

Brazil: Beer prices down both in bars and retail trade in July
|
According to data from the National Statistics Institute (IBGE), in July the price of beer fell both in bars and in retail trade. The average value of the product fell by 0.13% in supermarkets and 0.05% in bars and restaurants, FreshlyBottled.com reported on September 3.
Despite this drop, the accumulated inflation of beer in 2024 is still above the IPCA. So far this year, beer inflation in retail trade was 3.2%, and in bars and restaurants, 3.4%, compared to 2.9% of the IPCA in the same period.
The scenario is similar in the last 12 months, where average beer prices increased by 5.04% in retail trade and 4.85% outside the home, while general inflation was 4.5%.
Salvador (northeast) recorded the highest increase in the price of beer at retail (+1.7%), while outside the home, São Paulo had the highest increase (+1.2%). On the other hand, Campo Grande presented the highest deflation of beer at retail, with a fall of 2.2%.

Singapore: Singapore continues to be an important and growing Asian beer market
|
Singapore continues to be an important and growing Asian market, according Will Julius, managing director of Lion Brewery, one of Singapore’s first and largest craft breweries, according to a FoodNavigator Asia report.
The brewery, which also operates internationally, attributes the local craft beer scene’s vibrancy to an evolving appreciation for diverse and high-quality beer options among both consumers and bar owners.
It already has five core range beers available in both supermarket and retail and on-trade settings, as well as 20 to 25 other beers on tap at its own local brewery location.
Its beers have also successfully expanded their presence to five other international markets, comprising the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom (UK), Hong Kong, Macau, and Indonesia; and it also produces and exports from both Singapore and the UK.
However, Julius, expressed concerns about the restrictive practices of larger commercial beer companies in Singapore, alleging that some impose exclusive contracts on bars and hotels, which can hinder the entry of craft beer products into these venues. This not only makes it hard to supply these venues and sell products, but also reduces consumer awareness of craft products which is vital to supporting growth in the sector.
There also regulatory challenges facing craft
