USA, MD: Silver Branch Brewing to open third location in Rockville
|
Silver Branch Brewing at 8401 Colesville Rd #150 in Silver Spring has announced it is seeking investment to open a third location in Rockville, The MoCo Show reported on September 17.
The brewery plans to expand its operations and relocate its brewing operations to a new Rockville facility, which will allow them to increase production capacity and expand distribution. With the brewing equipment moved, they plan to build a full kitchen at its Silver Spring location and launch their new Mosaic Pizza brand.
Per Silver Branch: “Silver Branch has been capacity-limited for over two years. We have needed more space to brew so we can meet the demand of Silver Branch beer in wholesale, and we have needed more space to build a kitchen in Silver Spring so we can meet the demand for private events and a more diverse menu for groups and family dining. Opening Warrenton in 2023 has helped to address some of our capacity constraints, and has grown Silver Branch revenues by nearly over 50%, but at the same time, it has accentuated the need in Silver Spring for a larger kitchen and the need for an efficient brewery.

USA, WA: Everybody’s Brewing opening new location in Battle Ground
|
Everybody’s Brewing opened nearly 16 years ago, creating a brewery and pub where everybody feels welcome and appreciated. The company just announced that it is opening a new, second location in Battle Ground, Washington, at the brewpub currently operated by Northwoods Brewing. The official transition is scheduled for November 1st, The Washington Beer Blog reported on September 16.
The location in Battle Ground was originally a Laurelwood Brewing brewpub, which opened in 2009. In about 2014, the space was transformed into Northwoods Public House and Brewery. Now, the owners and founders of Everybody’s Brewing, Christine and Doug Ellenberger, will take it over and operate the space as Everybody’s at Northwood, located at 1401 SE Rasmussen Blvd, Battle Ground, WA 98604.

USA, TX: St. Elmo Brewing Co. second Austin location now open daily
|
St. Elmo Brewing Co. opened the doors of its second Austin location on the east side this summer, Community Impact reported on September 17.
St. Elmo Springdale is now open daily starting at 8 a.m. The pet- and family-friendly location is spread across 15,000 square feet between indoor and outdoor spaces, including a children's play area with custom Bloom Boxes from CoXist Studios.
“We’re excited to finally open our doors and welcome such an amazing community that’s supported us along the way,” St. Elmo founder Bryan Winslow said in a statement. “This new location not only brings the same spirit of St Elmo to a new part of Austin, but also represents a significant expansion for the brewery. With a production space four times larger than the original, it will allow us to significantly increase our distribution capabilities across Central Texas.”
The Springdale site was shaped by OPA Design Studio. Glass doors inside allow patrons to view the brewing side of the business. The facility also features a mural from artist Emily Eisenhart, whose work is also featured at St. Elmo's original South Austin location.

USA, CA: Anderson Valley Brewing Company up for sale
|
Reflecting tough economic times for craft brewers, Anderson Valley Brewing Company, one of the pioneers in the California craft brewing, is now up for sale, American Craft Beer reported on September 16.
A true heritage brewery, Anderson Valley was founded in 1987, one of 20 craft brewers in the nation at the time. And what started as a modest 10-barrel brewhouse located in the lower level of the Buckhorn Saloon in Boonville, CA, moved down the road to a 29-acre property with the production capacity of potentially 100,000 barrels.
Now on sale for $7,900,000, the brew-grounds also includes “beer park” developed to contain not only a tap room but a 10,000 sq ft lounge lawn, an unknown number of fairy doors hidden in tree trunks, an outdoor music stage and an 18-hole disc golf course.
Considered one of the industry’s “first-movers” when it comes to sustainable brewing, Anderson Valley is the world’s first solar powered brewery and operates its own self-contained water use and treatment cycle.

USA, FL: Unbranded Brewing Co ceases operations, liquidating assets through online auction
|
Unbranded Brewing Co, a brewery in Hialeah, Florida, has ceased operations and is liquidating its assets through an online auction, FoodBev Media reported on September 16.
The auction offers a rare opportunity for local businesses and the general public to acquire equipment and furnishings from the brewery. Founded in 2016, Unbranded Brewing Co gained recognition for its wood-aged lagers and innovative brewing techniques.
The facility, which spans 32,000 square feet, features a state-of-the-art brewing system, including a 30-barrel brewhouse with 13 fermenters, seven bright tanks and five lagering tanks, alongside a taproom and event space. The auction includes a wide range of items, from brewing and bottling equipment to restaurant furnishings and décor.
Gabriel Prado, founder and CEO of LocalAuctions.com, said: “This is an amazing opportunity for the general public and other business owners, including bars, restaurants and breweries”.
Bidding is currently open and will continue until 18 September 2024, at 1pm ET. Interested buyers can preview items in person on the same day from 9am to 12pm.
All items will have a starting bid of $5, and successful bidders must remove their purchases from the premises by 20 September 2024.

USA, AZ: Copper Mine Brewing Company to permanently close on September 21
|
Copper Mine Brewing Company first opened its taproom at 3455 S. Palo Verde Rd. in 2017. At the time, the local beer scene was bubbling over with local breweries and Copper Mine was a great addition to the scene.
However, on Monday, September 16, the brew crew announced that they’re permanently closing on Saturday, September 21.
“The time has come, we at Copper Mine are sad to announce that we will be closing our doors,” the team shared. “We thank all of you and the craft beer community for the last seven-and-a-half years, we’ve truly enjoyed it.”
The plan is to remain open until the end of the day on Saturday, September 21 “or until the beer runs out — whichever is first.”

USA, CO: Bell Brothers Brewing to close its doors this fall
|
Locals who have enjoyed a pint at Bell Brothers Brewing have until the end of the month to enjoy a brew and wish the business farewell, as the brewery announced on Sept. 10 that it would close its doors this fall, Fox21 News reported on September 17.
According to a post on Bell Brothers’ Facebook page, the brewery will officially close on Sept. 29.
“While we hate to say farewell, we are also filled with gratitude for everyone who has been a part of our brewery journey,” said Bell Brothers.
The brewery thanked its patrons, staff, entertainers and artists who have performed there, and its fellow breweries around town that have offered encouragement and good times.
“We have learned so much, grown so much and, if our hearts are heavy, it is due in great part to how full they are from having shared the past 3 years with you,” Bell Brothers said.

Although they remained confident in their business in March of 2024, Bright Light Brewing Company has now taken to social media to announce they will cease operations in late October, Greater Fayetteville Business Journal reported on September 17.
“For almost eight years the taproom on Russell St. has been a fun place to have a few cold ones and mingle amongst friends. We've had some great musicians play, some cool events and made a lot of memories for all involved! Our staffing has always been great and we appreciate everyone who worked for BLBC. We would like to say a BIG Thank You for the good times to patrons and staff!” The team shared on their Facebook page.
The business shared that until the final day, all draft, wine, cans will be priced at $5 and cases are buy 1 get 1 (while supplies last). All remaining T-shirts will be $10 and glasses can be purchased for $2.

Australia: Both malting and feed barley exports down in July
|
Australia exported 310,686 tonnes of barley and 411,463t of sorghum in July, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Grain Central reported on September 16.
Feed barley exports in July at 113,852t fell 77 percent from the June total of 485,077t, while malting barley exports at 196,834t fell 18pc from 239,422t in June.
Sorghum exports bucked the downtrend, surging 72pc from the 238,675t shipped in June, with China once again the market for nearly all the volume, and Taiwan on 4995t the only other volume customer.
China likewise was the biggest buyer by far of July-shipped feed barley with 101,248t, with Thailand on 4215t and Vietnam on 3105t and the second and third-biggest markets respectively.
In contrast to the barley-buying pattern of recent months, China’s malting imports from Australia on 185,389t greatly exceeding its feed imports.
Vietnam on 4921t and Singapore on 3132t were Australia’s second and third-biggest markets respectively for July-shipped malting barley.
Flexi Grain pool manager Sam Roache said barley shipments dropped in line with expectations as Australia’s runs to record tight carryout stocks after what could well be the second-largest or largest barley export year on record.

UK: Beer prices set to skyrocket due to poor barley harvest
|
The price of a pint in the UK is set to skyrocket as a beer shortage looms on the horizon, and it comes down to one typically British reason, Joe.co.uk reported on September 17.
Following on from what looks to be a poor yield of the key ingredient to create the golden nectar, beer might become in short supply, driving its already rising price further upwards.
In fact, 2024’s barley harvest is expected to be one of the worst harvests since detailed records began in 1983 with farmers expected to only be able to produce a fifth of what they normally supply.
This has ultimately been put down to a lack of sunshine.
Furthermore, yields have been hit by the amount of wheat being planted falling by a tenth, with two thirds of farmer saying they have lost money.
Waterlogging in fields throughout winter and spring have damaged many crops.
Mike Wilkins, a farmer in Wiltshire who lost around half his yield, told the BBC: “We have lost thousands and thousands of pounds this year, it has been catastrophic.”

South Africa: South African Breweries reiterate calls for revised approach to excessive beer excises increases
|
Government is disproportionately reliant on the beer-making industry for excise duties, which accounted for 34.7% of total excise revenues in the 2023/24 financial year, JSE-listed beer maker South African Breweries (SAB) has said, Engineering News reported on September 16.
Over the past few years, the company has made repeated appeals to government to reconsider its approach to beer taxation policies.
In a report on the burden of unpredictable excise taxes and high inflation on beer producers and consumers in South Africa, of which the key findings were published on September 16, it was pointed out that the trajectory in excise duties on beer had evolved significantly, often increasing above projected inflation, consumer price index (CPI) inflation outcomes and retail prices, which had led to higher prices for consumers, elevated production expenses and unpredictability for producers.
The full report, compiled for SAB by Oxford Economics Africa, will be published later this month.
The key findings indicate that a 1% increase in beer prices above inflation consistently results in a 0.9% decline in demand for the beverage.

Europe: Independent European brewers come together in new group
|
A pan-European group of trade associations and representatives have joined forces to promote independent brewing, Beer Today reported on September 16.
The Independent Brewers of Europe (IBE) aims to campaign against injustices in the beer market and to defend the diversity of independent beer.
The new group comprises national associations of independent breweries from ten European countries: Germany, Finland, France, United Kingdom, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic.
“Many of the challenges we face in the UK are shared amongst our friends in Europe, and so it makes sense for us to work more closely together to exchange information and tackle them,” said Andy Slee, chief executive of the UK’s Society of Independent Brewers and Associates (SIBA).
“As in the UK, beer across Europe is dominated by a handful of global companies and we need to ensure that independent breweries can survive and there is a great range of beers available which celebrates our diversity.”
Earlier in the year, the members came together in Vienna to discuss the issues facing the independent beer sector and ways to work together. This was hosted by the Independent Breweries of Austria, which formed three years ago.

UK & Ireland: Boortmalt appoints new chief executive in Ireland and the UK
|
International malting firm Boortmalt has appointed Stuart Sands as its new chief executive for Ireland and the UK, Irish Examiner reported on September 17.
Mr Sands joins Boortmalt with extensive experience in the food and beverage sector and deep knowledge of the British and Irish markets.
The group's chief executive Yvan Schaepman commented: "We are thrilled to welcome Stuart to the Boortmalt team. His proven track record and passion for the industry will be invaluable as we continue strengthening our position as the global leader in malt production. We look forward to Stuart leading our business in the UK and Ireland through the next growth phase."
Globally, the malting company has a production capacity of three million tonnes, with a presence across five continents with 27 malting plants, including its Minch Malt plant in Athy, Co Kildare.
Ireland and Britain are key regions for the firm, with strategically located malting plants that serve both domestic and international markets, ensuring efficiency in production and supply chain management.

Albania: Imported beer continues to gain market share in Albania
|
Imported beers continue to expand in the Albanian market, while the demand for local beer remains limited even in the summer months, Albanian Daily News reported on September 17.
For the seven months of 2024, the share of imported beer in the Albanian market has reached 60%, from 42% that was in 2016, according to Customs data.
About 40% of the demand for beer is covered by Albanian production. The situation was similar a year ago.
In January 2023, imported beers occupied 59% of the market and 41% of products came from imports. The increase in the share of imported beer has been influenced by the loss of competitiveness of domestic beer, according to domestic producers. Adrian Kostaqi, the administrator of the Korça and Tirana breweries, told Monitor that with the increase in excise duty, the sales prices are almost the same as the prices of imported beers.
According to him, with these sales prices, the producers cannot cover the costs, as the increase in prices would automatically reduce consumption. He claims that this is leading domestic production to complete collapse.

One of Bavaria's oldest breweries, Schlussle Bier, is forced to cease operations due to losses. It has been on the market for 334 years, local media reported.
„At the end of the year we will stop producing beer”, they say in an official statement from Schlussle Bier. The reasons for this are entirely economic.
