World: Diageo shares rise as it makes progress on restructuring despite 'challenging' year
|
Diageo shares rose on September 26 as investors toasted strategic progress after a ‘challenging’ period for the drinks giant, amid weak demand, MSN reported.
The Guinness and Johnnie Walker owner told shareholders ahead of its AGM the group had made progress on its ‘strategic initiatives’ and reiterated its outlook.
Diageo said it had pushed forward with its plans in the US, where it is looking to improve its route-to-market channels after excess inventory caused problems last year.
It also said it was ‘progressing well’ in a restructuring of its business model in Nigeria.
Diageo shares were up 4.6 per cent by midday, but are down 15 per cent in the past year.
Russ Mould, investment director at AJ Bell said: ‘The shares have jumped because of the absence of further bad news, rather than evidence of a turnaround.’
The update follows a difficult period for the Guinness producer as inflation pushed costs higher, and customers swapped premium spirits for cheaper options. In July, Diageo warned that weak consumer confidence could persist into next year.
Mould added: ‘Having staked a position very much in premium spirits, which paid off during the pandemic… Diageo really needs to see a recovery in this part of the market. ‘

UK: Beer industry leaders warn against increasing duty as beer prices see 3.8% increase
|
UK beer industry leaders have warned an increase in alcohol duty in the upcoming Budget would be a “bitter blow” for the sector as beer prices see a 3.8% increase, The Morning Advertiser reported on September 26.
The average cost of a pint of draught lager in pubs saw a 3.8% uptick in the year to August 2024, up from £4.62 in August 2023 to £4.80, the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed.
However, this was the lowest year-on-year increase so far this year. The largest was in January, when costs soared by 10.8%.
Draught bitter prices also increased at its lowest rate during this period, rising from £3.84 in August 2023 to £3.92 in August 2024, a 2% upswing.
Earlier this week, it was revealed Chancellor Rachel Reeves had not ruled out putting up tax on beer, wine and spirits as part her first Budget next month.
Though voices from across the brewing and pub industry have cautioned Reeves against the decision ahead of the fiscal address, set to take place on Wednesday 30 October.
British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) CEO Emma McClarkin said: “A hike in beer duty would be a bitter blow for our nation’s brewers, pubs

Cambodia: Heineken contributed US$438 mln ton Cambodia’s economy in 2023
|
In 2023, HEINEKEN Cambodia contributed USD $438 million to the local economy, as highlighted in a socio-economic impact report commissioned for the brewer’s 30th anniversary, EacNews.Asia reported on September 27.
The report, titled “HEINEKEN’s 2023 Socio-economic Contribution to the Kingdom of Cambodia,” was presented to Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet by HEINEKEN’s Regional President Asia Pacific, Jacco van der Linden, during a courtesy meeting themed “Orkun for 30 Years.” It reveals that HEINEKEN Cambodia spent 75% of its total procurement—USD $142 million—on domestic suppliers, significantly boosting the local economy in sectors such as packaging, logistics, agriculture, energy, marketing, and local investments
One local supplier benefiting from HEINEKEN Cambodia’s local expenditure is OJI Packaging. OJI Packaging Marketing Manager Dinith Naveen said: “Through our long-standing cooperation, HEINEKEN has developed an excellent understanding of our processes, ensuring efficiency and high-quality data. Their smooth business arrangements and knowledgeable staff make them incredibly easy to work with.”
Geolink Group, a leader in Cambodia’s domestic transport and logistics solutions, is another key supplier, also serving as HEINEKEN Cambodia's key partner for the production of returnable glass bottles (RGB). Geolink Group Managing Director Chamnan Leng said: “HEINEKEN demonstrates respect and openness in our enduring partnership and takes

The Netherlands & Greece: European Court of Justice opinion states Heineken HQ has to answer for the market abuses of Its Greek subsidiary
|
The Advocate General of the European Court of Justice (ECJ) Juliane Kokott has this week issued her opinion that damages claims resulting from market abuses by Heineken’s Greek subsidiary should be decided in the Netherlands, BusinessWire reported on September 27.
In her opinion, Ms Kokott stated there is a clear “close connection” between the claims brought against both Heineken and its 98.8%-owned subsidiary, Athenian Brewery and that “no additional evidence” is required to establish that the Netherlands is the appropriate jurisdiction to hear these claims.
This week’s opinion should clear the way for the Amsterdam District Court to rule on Heineken’s ultimate liability for damages next month. The €160 million+ claim brought by Macedonian Thrace Brewery (MTB), an independent Greek competitor, could create a dangerous precedent for Heineken which faces a near identical claim from Carlsberg for over €300 million. Heineken has been sanctioned repeatedly for market abuses in the EU and elsewhere around the world.
The MTB litigation and the Carlsberg claim both follow on from the Greek competition regulator’s 2015 ruling that Heineken’s subsidiary was guilty of longstanding and widespread anticompetitive misconduct. Heineken still refuses to accept that any law was broken in Greece but nonetheless disclosed in its last Annual

Australia: Maximus CL named sole recommended Western Australia malting barley
|
The Grain Industry Association of Western Australia has released its malting barley variety receival recommendations for the 2025-26, with Maximus CL nominated as the preferred variety in each of Western Australia’s (WA) port zones.
It accounts for two in every three hectares sown to barley in WA, and shows a move away from the French variety, RGT Planet which, along with Maximus CL, was a recommended variety for the 2024-25 season in two of the Kwinana zone’s three segments, and the entire Albany port zone.
Spartacus CL, which was a preferred variety for the current season in all zones bar Geraldton, has also been dropped.
Through the GIWA Barley Council, the recommendations are developed in consultation with the WA barley supply chain and aim to guide growers and consultants when planning the 2025 barley-cropping program.
GIWA Barley Council chair and InterGrain barley breeder David Moody said WA growers have 31 varieties to choose from, but a problem exists with the limited number of accredited malting varieties produced in sufficient volume to warrant segregation and export marketing.
“While Maximus CL is the dominant barley variety…the plan highlights how the low supply of RGT Planet may result in the exclusion of WA malt barley in several premium
