Brewery news USA, AZ: Arizona Wilderness Brewing Company opening new brewery in Phoenix
Arizona Wilderness Brewing Company is opening a new location, The Arizona Republic reported on September 26.

In an Instagram reel dated Sept. 25, founder Jonathan Buford and brewmaster Patrick Ware took followers on a tour of the new brewery that's currently under construction.

"This was a rundown building to say the least," Buford said. "We are proud to have a bar in. It's a big U-shaped bar." As they showed where the kitchen would be, Buford added: "I feel like with our 11 years of experience, this is our best menu yet."

The new building, which Arizona Wilderness owns, is on Miracle Mile, a stretch of McDowell between Seventh Street and State Route 51.

The Miracle Mile used to be a pedestrian-friendly area for shopping and dining in the 1940s and '50s. As Phoenix expanded, so did the road. As the shops lost their parking spaces, the shopowners vacated around the 1980s. According to the McDowell Miracle Mile website, between years 2000 and 2014, the area saw a slow resurgence. However, the ultimate goal is to make The Miracle Mile safer. The City of Phoenix plans to add make it safer for pedestrians and biking, add more transit, make access to businesses easier.

Brewery news USA, LA: Tin Roof Brewing Company put up for sale
It is the end of an era at Tin Roof Brewing Company, Baton Rouge Business Report said.

Owners Chris Boyce and William and Cammy McGehee announced on September 24 that they are putting the business up for sale and relinquishing ownership on Oct. 11 to focus on other endeavors.

The company also posted an announcement on its social media page.

“While the continuance of the brand is optimistic, we are pausing production as of September 2024,” the statement read. “It is our hope that Tin Roof will be back stronger than before under new leadership.”

The Tin Roof taproom will remain open to the public and host all the events on the books until Oct. 11.

Charles Caldwell and William McGehee, childhood friends raised in Natchez, Mississippi, founded Tin Roof Brewing Co. 14 years ago.

After pursuing careers as a banker and lawyer, respectively, Caldwell and McGehee decided it was time to make a career change and start brewing beer. After several years of work, their dream became a reality, with their first batches of beer being produced for commercial consumption in November 2010. Caldwell left Tin Roof in 2018.

“It has been our honor to participate in the craft beer community since starting ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NE: Scott Free Brewing Company planned for downtown Gering
A new microbrewery is planned for one of downtown Gering’s historic buildings, Rural Radio Network reported on September 25.

The Gering City Council this week gave approval to a class I liquor license and a micro TIF grant application to Kristian and Krystal Schank for the Scott Free Brewing Company.

Krystal Schank told the council their plans include craft beers, craft sodas, kombucha and limited dining fare, with a focus on German-style brews. “We want to embrace the German heritage that is in this area, and That is my husband’s preference on it,” said Schank. “That’s one of the reasons we started looking at opening a craft beer brewery is, there’s not anywhere to get that traditional German beer on a regular basis. Places like Flyover (Brewing Company) have some options, but they rotate in and out.”

Schank said the Scottsbluff couple is planning on limited hours to start, from Thursday nights through Sunday afternoons, to get a feel for what the city wants from the business.

The new microbrewery will be opening at 1032 O Street on a date yet to be announced.

Brewery news USA, NC: Bright Light Brewing Company closing its doors after almost eight years in business
A staple in the Fayetteville craft beer scene is officially closing its doors after almost eight years in business on Russell Street, The Fayetteville Observer reported on September 25.

Bright Light Brewing Company at 444 W. Russell St., is ceasing operations "on or around" Oct. 25, the brewpub announced in a Facebook post last week. The post said that with the current lease expiring Oct. 31, "we have decided to move in different directions."

"For almost eight years the taproom on Russell St. has been a fun place to have a few cold ones and mingle amongst friends. We've had some great musicians play, some cool events and made alot of memories for all involved! Our staffing has always been great and we appreciate everyone who worked for BLBC," the post said.

Multiple attempts to reach the owners via phone and social media were unsuccessful

The Facebook post said that until the brewery's final day, drafts, wine and cans are $5, with a buy-one-get-one offer on cases while supplies last. It said T-shirts are on sale for $10 and glasses for $2.

"For the contents/equipment of the taproom (tables, chairs, coolers, etc.), or if interested in assuming operations in place under a different name, you ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Steam Horse Brewing Co. closes its doors in West Palm Beach
West Palm Beach's Steam Horse Brewing Co. officially closed their doors on Friday, Sept. 20 and they absolutely did not "go gentle into that good night." In fact, they raged in the form of a huge house party they dubbed "Kick the Keg", Yahoo News reported.

Owner and master brewer Fran Andrewlevich said "it was absolutely off the rails and packed." He said he had many loyal patrons come up to him expressing both joy and sadness saying "this is our place."

Opened in August of 2018, the brewery at 1500 Elizabeth Ave. was the sister brewery of Tequesta Brewing Co. and Twisted Trunk Brewing Co. in Palm Beach Gardens.

Though it had been open for six years, Andrewlevich said the last couple years were "really slow" to the point they were losing money, he said. "During the pandemic we got crushed and never really recovered."

To make things even tougher, Andrewlevich said that just as the world was coming out of the pandemic, "the city closed the street in front of us for eight months," making it nearly impossible for patrons to get to Steam Horse.

In addition to the pandemic and the street closure, he said the economy is "just that bad."

Brewery news World: Diageo shares rise as it makes progress on restructuring despite 'challenging' year
Diageo shares rose on September 26 as investors toasted strategic progress after a ‘challenging’ period for the drinks giant, amid weak demand, MSN reported.

The Guinness and Johnnie Walker owner told shareholders ahead of its AGM the group had made progress on its ‘strategic initiatives’ and reiterated its outlook.

Diageo said it had pushed forward with its plans in the US, where it is looking to improve its route-to-market channels after excess inventory caused problems last year.

It also said it was ‘progressing well’ in a restructuring of its business model in Nigeria.

Diageo shares were up 4.6 per cent by midday, but are down 15 per cent in the past year.

Russ Mould, investment director at AJ Bell said: ‘The shares have jumped because of the absence of further bad news, rather than evidence of a turnaround.’

The update follows a difficult period for the Guinness producer as inflation pushed costs higher, and customers swapped premium spirits for cheaper options. In July, Diageo warned that weak consumer confidence could persist into next year.

Mould added: ‘Having staked a position very much in premium spirits, which paid off during the pandemic… Diageo really needs to see a recovery in this part of the market. ‘

Brewery news UK: Beer industry leaders warn against increasing duty as beer prices see 3.8% increase
UK beer industry leaders have warned an increase in alcohol duty in the upcoming Budget would be a “bitter blow” for the sector as beer prices see a 3.8% increase, The Morning Advertiser reported on September 26.

The average cost of a pint of draught lager in pubs saw a 3.8% uptick in the year to August 2024, up from £4.62 in August 2023 to £4.80, the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed.

However, this was the lowest year-on-year increase so far this year. The largest was in January, when costs soared by 10.8%.

Draught bitter prices also increased at its lowest rate during this period, rising from £3.84 in August 2023 to £3.92 in August 2024, a 2% upswing.

Earlier this week, it was revealed Chancellor Rachel Reeves had not ruled out putting up tax on beer, wine and spirits as part her first Budget next month.

Though voices from across the brewing and pub industry have cautioned Reeves against the decision ahead of the fiscal address, set to take place on Wednesday 30 October.

British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) CEO Emma McClarkin said: “A hike in beer duty would be a bitter blow for our nation’s brewers, pubs ...More info on site

Brewery news Cambodia: Heineken contributed US$438 mln ton Cambodia’s economy in 2023
In 2023, HEINEKEN Cambodia contributed USD $438 million to the local economy, as highlighted in a socio-economic impact report commissioned for the brewer’s 30th anniversary, EacNews.Asia reported on September 27.

The report, titled “HEINEKEN’s 2023 Socio-economic Contribution to the Kingdom of Cambodia,” was presented to Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet by HEINEKEN’s Regional President Asia Pacific, Jacco van der Linden, during a courtesy meeting themed “Orkun for 30 Years.” It reveals that HEINEKEN Cambodia spent 75% of its total procurement—USD $142 million—on domestic suppliers, significantly boosting the local economy in sectors such as packaging, logistics, agriculture, energy, marketing, and local investments

One local supplier benefiting from HEINEKEN Cambodia’s local expenditure is OJI Packaging. OJI Packaging Marketing Manager Dinith Naveen said: “Through our long-standing cooperation, HEINEKEN has developed an excellent understanding of our processes, ensuring efficiency and high-quality data. Their smooth business arrangements and knowledgeable staff make them incredibly easy to work with.”

Geolink Group, a leader in Cambodia’s domestic transport and logistics solutions, is another key supplier, also serving as HEINEKEN Cambodia's key partner for the production of returnable glass bottles (RGB). Geolink Group Managing Director Chamnan Leng said: “HEINEKEN demonstrates respect and openness in our enduring partnership and takes ...More info on site

Brewery news The Netherlands & Greece: European Court of Justice opinion states Heineken HQ has to answer for the market abuses of Its Greek subsidiary
The Advocate General of the European Court of Justice (ECJ) Juliane Kokott has this week issued her opinion that damages claims resulting from market abuses by Heineken’s Greek subsidiary should be decided in the Netherlands, BusinessWire reported on September 27.

In her opinion, Ms Kokott stated there is a clear “close connection” between the claims brought against both Heineken and its 98.8%-owned subsidiary, Athenian Brewery and that “no additional evidence” is required to establish that the Netherlands is the appropriate jurisdiction to hear these claims.

This week’s opinion should clear the way for the Amsterdam District Court to rule on Heineken’s ultimate liability for damages next month. The €160 million+ claim brought by Macedonian Thrace Brewery (MTB), an independent Greek competitor, could create a dangerous precedent for Heineken which faces a near identical claim from Carlsberg for over €300 million. Heineken has been sanctioned repeatedly for market abuses in the EU and elsewhere around the world.

The MTB litigation and the Carlsberg claim both follow on from the Greek competition regulator’s 2015 ruling that Heineken’s subsidiary was guilty of longstanding and widespread anticompetitive misconduct. Heineken still refuses to accept that any law was broken in Greece but nonetheless disclosed in its last Annual ...More info on site

Barley news Australia: Maximus CL named sole recommended Western Australia malting barley
The Grain Industry Association of Western Australia has released its malting barley variety receival recommendations for the 2025-26, with Maximus CL nominated as the preferred variety in each of Western Australia’s (WA) port zones.

It accounts for two in every three hectares sown to barley in WA, and shows a move away from the French variety, RGT Planet which, along with Maximus CL, was a recommended variety for the 2024-25 season in two of the Kwinana zone’s three segments, and the entire Albany port zone.

Spartacus CL, which was a preferred variety for the current season in all zones bar Geraldton, has also been dropped.

Through the GIWA Barley Council, the recommendations are developed in consultation with the WA barley supply chain and aim to guide growers and consultants when planning the 2025 barley-cropping program.

GIWA Barley Council chair and InterGrain barley breeder David Moody said WA growers have 31 varieties to choose from, but a problem exists with the limited number of accredited malting varieties produced in sufficient volume to warrant segregation and export marketing.

“While Maximus CL is the dominant barley variety…the plan highlights how the low supply of RGT Planet may result in the exclusion of WA malt barley in several premium ...More info on site
