Nigeria: AB InBev invests N512.8 billion in subsidiary International Breweries Plc
|
Anheuser Busch InBev (AB InBev), the world’s leading beer maker, has demonstrated confidence in Nigeria through its latest investment of N512.8 billion in International Breweries Plc (IBPLC), its company in Nigeria, Business Day reported on September 29.
Nnaemeka Achebe, chairman of the Board of Directors, commended the company on behalf of its shareholders, particularly after its Rights Issue which enabled the repayment of its forex-denominated loan that impacted the company over the years.
“The elimination of our FX exposure will improve IBPLC’s cash flows and support the company’s return to profitability. The offer was supported by our core shareholder, AB InBev which followed their rights in full. This is a strong indication of AB InBev’s commitment and belief in the Nigerian market opportunity and overall Nigerian economy.
“We are proud of the strides we have made in strengthening our business foundation and positioning for sustainable growth,” he said.
According to Achebe, the repayment of the outstanding $379.9 million loan, enabled by the parent company, AB InBev has bolstered IBPLC’s financial position.
“This recapitalisation not only strengthens our balance sheet but also sets the stage for long-term profitability and growth. We are now better equipped to drive innovation, improve operational efficiency, and seize new opportunities,” he

Europe: Japan’s Asahi now one of the biggest European beer producers
|
Asahi has achieved what many international beer brands could only dream of—taking on much-loved local brands and winning, Fortune reported on October 1.
A decade ago, when legendary Japanese brand Asahi was trying to work out how to break into the European beer market, it turned to a then-unfamiliar foe as a benchmark: the premium Italian brand Peroni Nastro Azzurro.
Soon, though, Peroni’s sales would become a much more vital benchmark for the beermaker, when Asahi snapped up the brand in 2016.
Asahi Super Dry, the premium Japanese beer popping up in Asian restaurants and a growing number of pubs across Europe, has quietly made much bigger waves in the region thanks to its parent company’s slew of acquisitions in the last decade, cementing its position as a major hitter on the continent.
The brewer anticipates €4.7 billion in revenue from Europe alone this year, a 5% jump from 2023, and €584 million in profit. Europe is now Asahi’s biggest market outside of Japan, making up 27% of its sales in the first half of 2024.
Asahi’s venture into the European market was no accident, and one CEO Atsushi Katsuki says had much to do with Japan’s ever-challenging aging population.
Japan’s working-age population has faced

Namibia: Namibia Breweries Limited reports 19.8% revenue increase in past financial year
|
Namibia Breweries Limited (NBL) reported a 19.8% revenue increase driven by its diverse beverage portfolio in the past financial year, the Namibian reported on October 1.
According to a statement on the company’s condensed consolidated interim financial results for the period ended 30 June, NBL recorded an increase in net revenue to over N$4 billion.
“This was due to strong growth in the wine, cider and spirits portfolio, coupled with market share gains in beer,” the statement, issued by spokesperson Surihe Gaomas-Guchu, says.
During the second half of the year, the company’s contributions from South Africa showed improvement, while export revenue slowed, she says.
In addition, fixed-cost ratios improved, brought about by the integration of Distell and NBL.
In April last year, Heineken International acquired Distell Group Holdings Limited and NBL, which were combined with Heineken South Africa into a new Heineken majority-owned business to capture significant growth opportunities in southern Africa.
Heineken’s chief executive and chairman of the executive board, Dolf van den Brink, at the time said: “We are delighted to welcome over 5 400 talented employees of Distell and Namibia Breweries to Heineken, and look forward to adding more than €1 billion in net revenue and €150 million operating profit to our African

South Africa: Beer industry calling for excise tax in line with inflation or lower as current tax could lead to destruction of sector
|
South Africa’s beer industry is calling for an excise tax that is in line with inflation or lower, with major producer South African Breweries (SAB) saying the current tax of 25% is excessive and could lead to the destruction of the beer industry, Mail & Guardian reported on September 30.
A recent report commissioned by SAB and undertaken by Oxford Economics Africa found that existing excise duties on beer are far above the levels stipulated in the country’s excise policy.
In terms of Schedule 1 Part 2A of the Customs Act, the guideline excise tax burden for beer is 23%, two percentage points lower than where it is.
The report said the government disproportionately relies on the beer industry for excise revenue, representing 34.7% of total excise revenue in 2023-24. This makes beer the largest of all excisable products.
Commenting on the report’s findings, SAB chief executive Richard Rivett-Carnac said the industry needed strong policy certainty about excise tax.
“We understand that the government is under pressure from a budgetary perspective. For 10 years we have seen inflated excise tax increases when compared with inflation,” Rivett-Carnac said in a statement.
“That is contrary to the policy and really impacts the industry — an industry

Ireland: Barley to supply planned Malting Company of Ireland’s expansion to be needed as soon as next season
|
Barley to supply the planned expansion of the Malting Company of Ireland’s (MCI) facilities in Co Cork will be needed as soon as next season, provided the project moves on track, the Irish Farmers Journal reported on October 1.
The MCI recently announced a planned expansion to take in 25,000t more malting barley.
The project will hopefully be completed by the second half of 2026. The Irish Farmers Journal understands that the planning application was being finalised last week.
MCI CEO Paul McGillicuddy told the Irish Farmers Journal: “We’d expect a phased increase in barley requirement from the 2025 harvest, feeding into 2026 production; a phased increase from next year.”
This barley will come from Dairygold and Tirlán suppliers. MCI is a joint venture between the two co-ops.
McGillicuddy said customers want sustainable grain.
“It’s crystal clear to me that they [customers] do want to use Irish crops and low-carbon, sustainable Irish crops.
“What is very clear as well is that they need to see robust, validated positions around the sustainability as well.
"That’s where we’re going to put a lot of focus, as well as the emissions on site, really developing a robust, regenerative programme that will bring value to our customers and enable them
