|
Arlington Brewing Company announced on October 2 that it will be opening on Ryder Street on the eastern edge of Arlington Heights, with the facility including a 15-barrel production brewery, a taproom that has a full kitchen, an outdoor beer garden, and a function room for private events, Boston Restaurant Talk reported.
The business has been hosting pop-up beer gardens as they were looking for a permanent home, while also expanding their beermaking through contract brewing. If all goes as planned, the brewery will open next summer, and until then, they will continue to pop up at various events in the local area.
The address for the upcoming brewery is 15 Ryder Street, Arlington, MA, 02476.

USA, MD: Watchtower Brewing Company coming to downtown Aberdeen
|
A new brewery is coming to downtown Aberdeen, as there's a renewed push to revitalize the city's historic center just off of Route 40 in Harford County, WMAR reported on October 1.
Watchtower Brewing Company just signed a lease for a space directly on Festival Park.
It will be at 22 Howard Street and include outdoor seating. Watchtower hopes to open in September 2025, or earlier.
The team has already shown up at Friendship Craft Beer Festival in Abingdon, and at Aberdeen's recent Oktoberfest.
It was the second Oktoberfest for the city, spearheaded by another downtown favorite, Prost German Restaurant, which opened in 2020.
"What's going on in Aberdeen is amazing," said Watchtower's marketing director Joe Fino. "We're bullish on Aberdeen."
He noted Mayor Patrick McGrady is determined to revitalize the entire "Main Street" area, and the city has big plans for the historic center.
"[McGrady] is willing to do whatever it takes [to revitalize]," said Fino. Watchtower "is going to anchor their downtown area."
The city is also renovating the entrance to Festival Park, and is planning to make a pedestrian walkway from the park over to the West Bel Air Avenue, to connect businesses that include another new eatery, the trendy bakery Say Delicious.

USA, CA: Karl Strauss Brewing Company announces opening of its newest brewpub in Corona
|
Karl Strauss Brewing Company, San Diego’s first post-Prohibition craft brewery, is excited to announce the opening of its newest brewpub at The Shops at Dos Lagos in Corona on Tuesday, October 1. As a Southern California original, Karl Strauss has been continually forging the way while staying true to its roots by bringing San Diego-style beers to fans. The Dos Lagos location will be the brewery’s second in Riverside County and its ninth overall in Southern California, furthering its legacy of craft beer excellence, Brewbound reported.
“We’ve been brave enough to do things our way since 1989—being creative while holding fast to the traditions of independence that built us,” said President Matt Rattner. “Opening in Corona is a chance to bring that spirit to a new community and share the full Karl Strauss experience. For us, it’s about creating something meaningful with every beer, and we’re excited for Dos Lagos community to become part of the story.”
Karl Strauss’s - iconic beers, like the award-winning Red Trolley Ale, first brewed as a holiday ale 35 years ago, are testaments to the brand’s commitment to quality and tradition. Alongside staples like Follow the Sun Lager and the popular Tower X West Coast IPA—one

USA, NC: Clouds Brewing opens new location on Franklin Street, replacing Gizmo Brew Works
|
Last week Clouds Brewing, a Triangle-based brewery, opened a third location on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill, replacing the space previously occupied by Gizmo Brew Works, The Daily Tar Herald reported on October 1.
On Aug. 14, Gizmo Brew Works announced on Facebook that it would be transitioning to Clouds Brewing. The announcement said Clouds Brewing is hiring the previous staff at Gizmo Brew Works.
Gizmo Brew Works filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection in March, yet the Chapel Hill location remained open until August. There are two Gizmo Brew Works locations still active in Raleigh and Durham.
Clouds Brewing staff has been friends with Gizmo Brew Works staff for several years, Matt MacNeil, the co-owner of Clouds Brewing, said.He said after Gizmo Brew Works declared bankruptcy, Clouds Brewing staff were trying to figure out a way to help them out.
“We had the money to purchase it, and so it just became a good partnership to work with Gizmo on the acquisition of this,” MacNeil said.
He also said in an email that Clouds Brewing will be offering trivia night on Tuesdays and Thursdays — just like Gizmo Brew Works did — and mimosas on Sundays.

USA, OK: Oklahoma’s Vanessa House Beer Company confirms permanent closure
|
The latest Oklahoma brewery to close shuttered quietly following months of scaling back production and limiting hours of operation at its Oklahoma City taproom, AOL.com reported on September 30.
Vanessa House Beer Company, 118 NW 8 St., posted to the bio sections of its social media accounts that it was permanently closed over the weekend, forgoing a large announcement.
Founded in 2016 by five friends who met at a house on Vanessa Drive in Norman, the brewery was representative of their love of beer and each other.
Like many craft breweries in OKC, Vanessa House was hit hard by the pandemic. It rebounded fairly well, however, and despite facing additional hardships like equipment failures and other obstacles, like a road closure by the city in front of the tap room that led to a lawsuit in 2022, Vanessa House ownership continued pushing forward, releasing new brews as late as May of this year.
But the tides began to shift late last year, when, on Dec. 5, 2023, the brewery posted to its Facebook and Instagram asking for the support of the community.
"We are not ready to leave yet, and in these trying times we need your help to keep our doors open," the post

Nigeria: AB InBev invests N512.8 billion in subsidiary International Breweries Plc
|
Anheuser Busch InBev (AB InBev), the world’s leading beer maker, has demonstrated confidence in Nigeria through its latest investment of N512.8 billion in International Breweries Plc (IBPLC), its company in Nigeria, Business Day reported on September 29.
Nnaemeka Achebe, chairman of the Board of Directors, commended the company on behalf of its shareholders, particularly after its Rights Issue which enabled the repayment of its forex-denominated loan that impacted the company over the years.
“The elimination of our FX exposure will improve IBPLC’s cash flows and support the company’s return to profitability. The offer was supported by our core shareholder, AB InBev which followed their rights in full. This is a strong indication of AB InBev’s commitment and belief in the Nigerian market opportunity and overall Nigerian economy.
“We are proud of the strides we have made in strengthening our business foundation and positioning for sustainable growth,” he said.
According to Achebe, the repayment of the outstanding $379.9 million loan, enabled by the parent company, AB InBev has bolstered IBPLC’s financial position.
“This recapitalisation not only strengthens our balance sheet but also sets the stage for long-term profitability and growth. We are now better equipped to drive innovation, improve operational efficiency, and seize new opportunities,” he

Europe: Japan’s Asahi now one of the biggest European beer producers
|
Asahi has achieved what many international beer brands could only dream of—taking on much-loved local brands and winning, Fortune reported on October 1.
A decade ago, when legendary Japanese brand Asahi was trying to work out how to break into the European beer market, it turned to a then-unfamiliar foe as a benchmark: the premium Italian brand Peroni Nastro Azzurro.
Soon, though, Peroni’s sales would become a much more vital benchmark for the beermaker, when Asahi snapped up the brand in 2016.
Asahi Super Dry, the premium Japanese beer popping up in Asian restaurants and a growing number of pubs across Europe, has quietly made much bigger waves in the region thanks to its parent company’s slew of acquisitions in the last decade, cementing its position as a major hitter on the continent.
The brewer anticipates €4.7 billion in revenue from Europe alone this year, a 5% jump from 2023, and €584 million in profit. Europe is now Asahi’s biggest market outside of Japan, making up 27% of its sales in the first half of 2024.
Asahi’s venture into the European market was no accident, and one CEO Atsushi Katsuki says had much to do with Japan’s ever-challenging aging population.

Namibia: Namibia Breweries Limited reports 19.8% revenue increase in past financial year
|
Namibia Breweries Limited (NBL) reported a 19.8% revenue increase driven by its diverse beverage portfolio in the past financial year, the Namibian reported on October 1.
According to a statement on the company’s condensed consolidated interim financial results for the period ended 30 June, NBL recorded an increase in net revenue to over N$4 billion.
“This was due to strong growth in the wine, cider and spirits portfolio, coupled with market share gains in beer,” the statement, issued by spokesperson Surihe Gaomas-Guchu, says.
During the second half of the year, the company’s contributions from South Africa showed improvement, while export revenue slowed, she says.
In addition, fixed-cost ratios improved, brought about by the integration of Distell and NBL.
In April last year, Heineken International acquired Distell Group Holdings Limited and NBL, which were combined with Heineken South Africa into a new Heineken majority-owned business to capture significant growth opportunities in southern Africa.
Heineken’s chief executive and chairman of the executive board, Dolf van den Brink, at the time said: “We are delighted to welcome over 5 400 talented employees of Distell and Namibia Breweries to Heineken, and look forward to adding more than €1 billion in net revenue and €150 million operating profit to our African

Ireland: Barley to supply planned Malting Company of Ireland’s expansion to be needed as soon as next season
|
Barley to supply the planned expansion of the Malting Company of Ireland’s (MCI) facilities in Co Cork will be needed as soon as next season, provided the project moves on track, the Irish Farmers Journal reported on October 1.
The MCI recently announced a planned expansion to take in 25,000t more malting barley.
The project will hopefully be completed by the second half of 2026. The Irish Farmers Journal understands that the planning application was being finalised last week.
MCI CEO Paul McGillicuddy told the Irish Farmers Journal: “We’d expect a phased increase in barley requirement from the 2025 harvest, feeding into 2026 production; a phased increase from next year.”
This barley will come from Dairygold and Tirlán suppliers. MCI is a joint venture between the two co-ops.
McGillicuddy said customers want sustainable grain.
“It’s crystal clear to me that they [customers] do want to use Irish crops and low-carbon, sustainable Irish crops.
“What is very clear as well is that they need to see robust, validated positions around the sustainability as well.
"That’s where we’re going to put a lot of focus, as well as the emissions on site, really developing a robust, regenerative programme that will bring value to our customers and enable them

South Africa: Beer industry calling for excise tax in line with inflation or lower as current tax could lead to destruction of sector
|
South Africa’s beer industry is calling for an excise tax that is in line with inflation or lower, with major producer South African Breweries (SAB) saying the current tax of 25% is excessive and could lead to the destruction of the beer industry, Mail & Guardian reported on September 30.
A recent report commissioned by SAB and undertaken by Oxford Economics Africa found that existing excise duties on beer are far above the levels stipulated in the country’s excise policy.
In terms of Schedule 1 Part 2A of the Customs Act, the guideline excise tax burden for beer is 23%, two percentage points lower than where it is.
The report said the government disproportionately relies on the beer industry for excise revenue, representing 34.7% of total excise revenue in 2023-24. This makes beer the largest of all excisable products.
Commenting on the report’s findings, SAB chief executive Richard Rivett-Carnac said the industry needed strong policy certainty about excise tax.
“We understand that the government is under pressure from a budgetary perspective. For 10 years we have seen inflated excise tax increases when compared with inflation,” Rivett-Carnac said in a statement.
“That is contrary to the policy and really impacts the industry — an industry
