USA: Constellation Brands says growth in beer business offset weakness in wine and spirits but shares stagger to sharp loss
|
Shares of Constellation Brands Inc. staggered to a sharp loss on October 3, after the parent of Modelo and Corona beer brands beat adjusted profit expectations, but only after excluding a large non-cash loss booked for writing down the value of its wine and spirits business, MarketWatch reported.
Overall sales rose, as growth in the beer business offset weakness in wine and spirits, but came up a bit shy of expectations.
“[W]e continue to face incremental category headwinds in our wine and spirits business, particularly in the lower-priced segments,” said Chief Executive Bill Newland on the post-earnings call with analysts, according to an AlphaSense transcript.
And Newland said that although the beer business was growing, it was being held back by the challenging macroeconomic backdrop, where rising unemployment rates have hurt consumer demand.
Looking ahead, the company nudged up its adjusted profit outlook but trimmed its view on sales growth, amid continued weakness in wine and spirits.
Newland said “the current macroeconomic environment has weighed on beverage alcohol,” as well as on the broader consumer packaged goods market, but the company continued to outperform the industry and remained the top market-share gainer in the beer business.
For the quarter to Aug. 31, the company swung to

Singapore: ThaiBev to allocate 18 mln baht for expansion this year
|
Thai Beverage (ThaiBev), the Singapore-listed food and beverage company, plans to allocate 18 billion baht this year for expansion both domestically and internationally.
Chief executive Thapana Sirivadhanabhakdi unveiled the group's "Passion 2030" vision, a new five-year strategic plan that promises agility to adapt to evolving consumer behaviour, providing digital solutions catering to customer needs and preferences.
As the service sector has huge room for growth, the group views the digital platform as primed for expansion.
Prapakon Thongtheppairot, executive vice-president in charge of spirit products, said the company will grow its spirits product group over the next five years by exploring opportunities in foreign markets. The company set a total investment budget of 18 billion baht for this fiscal year, from Oct 1, 2024 to Sept 30, 2025, for all products, including food, alcohol and non-alcoholic beverage (NAB). Of the total, the company will invest 2.5 billion baht in Cambodia, he said.
Kosit Suksingha, executive vice-president in charge of NAB and chief of digital and technology, said the company will invest in the AgriValley project in Malaysia with a total budget of 8 billion baht. The project aims to raise 20,000 cows in an area covering 2,726 hectares.
"The project in Malaysia will be an integrated

Vietnam: Heineken urges Vietnam to reconsider excise tax
|
Vietnam should reconsider raising the excise tax on alcoholic drinks, including making a timeline for gradual implementation and different tax rates for different products, says Heineken Vietnam managing director Wietse Mutters, The Investor reported on October 3.
Wietse Mutters, who became head of Heineken Vietnam in August, made the suggestion at a Tuesday meeting with Ho Chi Minh City Chairman Phan Van Mai. The executive also called on HCMC authorities to help Heineken deliver the recommendations to higher authorities.
Backing the suggestions, Mai said he would discuss the issues with ministries and committees of the National Assembly. He also urged Heineken Vietnam to further help HCMC’s green economic growth plan, towards carbon neutrality.
Mutters noted that renewable energy now accounts for 99% of the Heineken plants’ activities in Vietnam, and Heineken Vietnam has reduced carbon emissions by 93% versus 2018, towards neutrality in 2030.
Mutters also highlighted Heineken’s economic contributions to Vietnam, including investments exceeding €1 billion, being the largest Dutch investor in Vietnam to date.
Heineken has so far created over 172,500 jobs and accounted for nearly 0.5% of Vietnam’s GDP. In 2024, Heineken Vietnam is expected to contribute VND12 trillion ($485.8 million) to HCMC’s budget.
The National Assembly, Vietnam’s highest legislative body, is set

Russia: Export duty on barley, wheat to increase next week
|
The export duty on Russian wheat will rise 6.6% to 1,328.3 rubles per tonne in the week starting October 9 from 1,246 rubles per tonne during the previous duty period, the Agriculture Ministry said on October 4.
The duty on barley will increase to 229.5 rubles per tonne from 190.8 the previous week, while the duty on corn will decline 3.2% to 2,696.7 rubles per tonne from 2,786.2 rubles per tonne.
Duty rates are based on indicative prices of $213.40 per tonne for wheat against $213.40 per tonne in the previous period, $184 per tonne for barley versus $185 per tonne, and $222.30 per tonne for corn against $225 per tonne.
The duties are valid until October 15, inclusive.
Russia introduced a grain damper mechanism on June 2, 2021, which stipulates floating duties on the export of wheat, corn and barley and the return of funds received from them to subsidize agricultural producers. The duties are calculated weekly from indicators based on the prices of export contracts registered on the Moscow Exchange . Duty rates were calculated in dollars initially and in rubles since July 2022. The duty is 70% of the difference between reference and indicative prices.
The Agriculture Ministry on June 1, 2023,
