USA: Barkey farmers worry as beer loses ground
|
Don Nygaard, a third-generation farmer in a remote corner of North Dakota, used to grow malt barley for Rahr Malting Corp. to make lagers, pale ales and IPAs, The Western Producer reported on October 4.
But this year, he received no lucrative contracts from Minnesota-based Rahr or any beer makers, so his sprawling farm is growing food-grade barley and wheat, both crops that are priced near four-year lows.
As overall beer consumption in the United States slides to its lowest level since the 1970s, according to data from the Brewers Association, U.S. Plains states face a huge glut of barley.
Americans are buying less beer and frequenting fewer craft breweries that use even more malt per beverage.
The exploding popularity of hard seltzers and lower alcohol consumption in general have led to plummeting barley demand from beer makers. Multiple years of excellent barley crops have further depressed prices and taken away a once high-value option in a year when farmers are struggling to break even with any crops, according to farmers, agronomists, and beer industry experts.
“I’m worried with the trends that are happening,” Nygaard said.
“This winter is going to be tight for all of us trying to figure out which payments we can make.”

USA, MA: Hendler Family Brewing Company agrees to purchase Night Shift Brewery, Inc.
|
The company behind two well-known Massachusetts breweries is adding another big name within the local beer scene, NBC Boston reported on October 8.
According to a press release, Framingham-based Hendler Family Brewing Company has agreed to purchase Night Shift Brewery, Inc., joining Jack's Abby Craft Lagers and Wormtown Brewery.
With the purchase of Night Shift, the company will become the largest producer of craft beer in Massachusetts, and it plans to keep Night Shift's core lineup including Santilli, Whirlpool and Nite Lite, while the taprooms in Everett and Boston's Lovejoy Wharf, the three beer gardens in Allston, and the Level 99 locations and Encore Taproom (the latter two are not managed by Night Shift) will continue to operate.
Hendler Family Brewing Company was founded earlier this year by Jack, Eric and Sam Hendler of Jack's Abby Craft Lagers, who launched the new corporate name when they purchased Wormtown.

USA, WA: Crucible Brewing to close down by the end of the year
|
Crucible Brewing, a popular local brewery in Everett started by two childhood friends, will be shutting down by the end of 2025, My Everett News reported on October 5.
At one point, Crucible Brewing has expanded beyond Everett to a second location in Woodinville. They closed that location last year.
Celebrating their 9th anniversary in Everett two days ago, Crucible Brewing will, sadly, not experience a 10th anniversary.

USA, MI: Ascension Brewing to shut its doors after 9 years in business
|
A popular Metro Detroit brewery is planning to shut its doors after a final weekend of service, ClickOnDetroit reported on October 4.
Ascension Brewing, which has been open in Novi for nearly a decade, says Oct. 6 will be its last day in business.
“Despite our passion and dedication to bringing you the finest craft beers and food, the downturn in the beer industry and scaling challenges have not been favorable to us,” the brewery said in a statement posted to social media.
“We are immensely grateful for your support over the years. It’s been an unforgettable journey filled with great beers, good company, and countless memories. We couldn’t have done it without the hard work of our team and the loyalty of our customers.”
Others local brewers commented on the post, sharing their support. Batch Brewing in Detroit said, “What heartbreaking news. Much love to ya’ll for the great beers over the years.”
Urbanrest Brewing wrote, “Saddened to hear this news fam. Thank you for always being such great friends to us, and for all you’ve done for the industry. We appreciate you immensely.”

USA, TX: Frost Brewery closes for good in Lubbock
|
Frost Brewery announced on social media it would close for business in Lubbock on Saturday, October 5, KLBK reported.
The post thanked its loyal customers for their support during the brewery’s time being open. The owners noted they have made lifelong friends through the brewery.
Frost Brewery first opened at 3121 34th Street, Lubbock in May of 2023.

UK: Asahi sees UK division’s losses deepen in most recent financial year
|
Japanese beer manufacturer Asahi, which also owns brands such as Peroni, saw its UK division's losses deepen in its most recent financial year. The London-based branch reported a pre-tax loss of £14m for 2023, following a loss of £6.3m in the previous 12 months.
The last time Asahi UK posted a pre-tax profit was in 2021, when it totalled £11.9m. However, newly submitted accounts to Companies House revealed that its annual revenue rose from £512.2m to £527.1m, as reported by City AM.
In addition to Asahi and Peroni, the group owns Fuller's Brewery, which produces brands like London Pride and Grolsch. Fuller's Brewery was previously the brewing division of London-listed Fuller, Smith & Turner.
Aiming to increase its market share in the UK, a statement approved by the board read: "The company will continue to manufacture, distribute and sell its range of quality beers and ciders brewed at its locations in the United Kingdom and provide a full portfolio of drink products to its customers."
It added: "The company's strategic priority is to grow market share within the UK through its portfolio of premium domestic and international alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks."

UK: Carlsberg planning to shut Banks’s Brewery in Wolverhampton
|
Carlsberg’s UK venture Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company (CMBC) is planning to shut Banks’s Brewery in the English Midlands next year, Yahoo Finance reported on October 7.
CMBC pointed to two factors for the decision to close Wolverhampton-based Banks’s. It cited declining cask-ale volumes and a decision by Mahou San Miguel "not to renew its long-term exclusive licence partnership" from next year.
The UK venture, which Carlsberg has moved to fully acquire, said 97 employees will be affected by the closure.
Paul Davies, the CEO of CMBC, said: “This has been an extremely difficult decision. However, it has been necessary to restructure our business to maintain our competitiveness in a challenging UK beer market.
“The hard reality is that, because of the current climate for ale and Mahou San Miguel’s decision not to renew its exclusive production and distribution agreement with CMBC from the start of next year, we will have significant excess capacity across our brewery network which we have to address.”

India: Pernod Ricard to set up a malt distillery in Maharashtra
|
Wine maker Pernod Ricard India on October 7 said it will set up a malt distillery and maturation facility in Maharashtra as part of the company's plan to invest up to Rs 1,785 crore in 10 years, MSN.com reported.
The ground-breaking (Bhoomi Pujan) ceremony for the upcoming plant was held at Butibori, Nagpur in the presence of the state's Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the company said in a statement.
It is a significant first step in the realisation of the company's Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the government of Maharashtra, signed on February 23, 2024, the statement said.
The agreement also underscores Pernod Ricard's commitment to India, backed by a projected investment of up to Rs 1,785 crore over a span of 10 years, the company said, adding that it has already committed about Rs 100 crore of investment in the state.
The upcoming plant, the company's largest in Asia with annual production capacity of 13 million pure alcoholic litres, will produce world-class malt spirit, it said.
According to Fadnavis, the project underscores India's growing stature on the global economic stage, providing job opportunities for hundreds of individuals while fostering skill development and entrepreneurship.

UK: Muntons secures £83.8m funding package to support its sustainability goals
|
UK malt manufacturer Muntons has secured a £83.8m funding package from HSBC UK to support its sustainability goals, Food Manufacture reported on October 7.
The manufacturer is one of the first recipients of the bank’s Sustainability Improvement Facility, designed to help businesses transition to a more sustainable economy by linking their cost of capital to their EcoVadis Sustainability Rating.
Funding from HSBC UK will be used to support cash flow as well as future sustainability projects, including an extensive regenerative agriculture programme.
Kate Dixon – head of sustainability, innovation and marketing at Muntons – said: “Our journey towards sustainability is far from over, but we have already made great progress thanks to the support of HSBC UK."
“Having received the King’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development, which recognises our outstanding efforts in reducing environmental impact throughout our supply chain, this funding reaffirms our commitment to sustainable practices and also provides us with the necessary capital to expand both domestically and internationally.”
Muntons has already achieved an EcoVadis Gold rating, reportedly placing the business in the top 5% of sustainable companies – assessed by EcoVadis – in the world.

Kenya: East African Breweries Limited increases its headcount in year of profit decline
|
Listed brewer, East African Breweries Limited (EABL) raised its headcount by 203 in its financial year ended June 2024 despite experiencing increased costs which trimmed the brewer’s net profit over the period by 12 percent, Business Daily reported on October 7.
The manufacturer’s permanent employees rose to 1,611 from 1,408, according to new disclosures even as the company felt the pinch of rising costs of sales, selling and distribution costs, and finance costs.
“We employ 1,611 full-time employees around East Africa -Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. The production side of the business includes sites across three countries,” the brewer notes in its sustainability report.
The bulk of EABL employees are employed by Diageo- the alcoholic beverage manufacturer's parent firm but the company also hires contractors to aid in construction projects, logistics, cleaning and catering, and selected sales and merchandising activity.
“Most people who work on our behalf are employed by Diageo although, like most manufacturing companies, we also employ contractors, the numbers of whom vary significantly by region,” EABL added.
The manufacturer estimates the number of contracted staff at over 1,000.
EABL spent Sh9.5 billion on salaries and wages in its financial year ending June 2024, up from Sh9.1 billion previously.

UK & Thailand: Scotch whisky to benefit from new UK trade deal with Thailand
|
Thailand has signed a trade deal with the UK designed to boost trade and investment between the two nations and open the country up to British businesses, and Scotch is set to benefit, The Drinks Business reported on September 26.
UK trade minister Douglas Alexander has signed the pact alongside Thai commerce minister Pichai Naripthaphan in Bangkok on 18 September.
The UK and Thailand also recently also made it much simpler for Thai companies to import UK food and drink. Businesses can now submit conformity documentation by email instead of the time-consuming process of getting paperwork physically stamped by the British Embassy. Removing this barrier will be worth around £40m-£70m to UK businesses over five years, the UK government has said.
Thailand is the second-biggest economy in Southeast Asia and trade between the UK and Thailand is already worth £5.9 billion a year. The Thai economy is rapidly growing and its middle class is expected to more than double to almost 14 million by 2030, creating huge opportunities for UK businesses to tap into.

India: USD24 mln fund launched to invest in Indian microbreweries
|
Optimistic Capital, an Indian investment firm, has launched the country’s first dedicated microbrewery-targeted fund. The INR2 billion (USD23.9 million) fund will provide investors with a unique opportunity to invest in India’s fast-growing microbrewery sector, with a particular emphasis on key hospitality markets such as Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune, AsiaBrewersNetwork.com reported on September 27.
The microbrewery fund is designed to exploit the rising profitability of craft beer establishments, and the sector’s overall robust growth. Industry projections forecast that by 2030, the number of microbreweries in India could exceed 1,000: a 300% increase from 2024.
Moreover, in Bengaluru, where there are currently more than 80 microbreweries, most report profit margins above 20%. The city’s improved regulatory environment has also played a facilitatory role by extending operating hours for F&B outlets to 1 a.m. and easing licensing requirements. Minimum space needed for microbreweries has also been reduced from 10,000sq ft to 6,500sq ft, making it cheaper for new entrants.

Thailand: Government rejects bill that would liberalise home brewing
|
Thailand’s House of Representatives has rejected a bill that would liberalise Thailand’s alcohol industry by making to easier for home brewing of beer to be conducted without a licence, AsiaBrewersNetwork.com reported on October 4.
The bill had been proposed by member of the house Taopiphop Limjittrakorn, an experienced craft brewer, and a representative of the opposition People’s Party. The bill was voted down with 237 votes against and 137 in favour.
The bill proposed allowing individuals to own their alcohol distillation equipment and to produce alcoholic beverages for personal use without needing prior government approval. “This is a big issue. If every household is allowed to make liquor without legal controls and that leads to death, the consequences will be severe. Permission is necessary,” argued government chief whip Wisut Chainarun from the Pheu Thai Party coalition, calling the bill impractical and potentially dangerous.
Instead, the House endorsed more conservative bills put forward by Pheu Thai and the United Thai Nation Party, a coalition partner, with 384 and 385 votes respectively. These bills will now undergo further scrutiny. Under these conservative proposals, government permission remains a prerequisite.
