Brewery news USA, LA: Abita Brewing Co. planning new brewery in New Orleans
Abita Brewing Co. plans to open a brewery in New Orleans in 2025, adding a second location for the state's largest craft beer brewer and joining several other companies along Tchoupitoulas Street's popular brewers row, nola.com reported on October 15.

"Adding a brewery location in New Orleans just makes sense,” Heidi Guerra, vice presdident of marketing for the northshore-based Abita, said in a news release Tuesday. "We want people to have the opportunity to taste our beers where it’s most convenient for them and for a lot of Louisianians and visitors, that’s in the heart of New Orleans."

The new location will be at Tchoupitoulas Street and 1st Street, the company's account said on the social media site X. In New Orleans, Abita will join several other breweries located along or near Tchoupitoulas, including Urban South, Port Orleans and Nola Brewing Co.

The New Orleans operation will be a "modern brewery," Abita President Troy Ashley said. But, he added, the New Orleans location will "be brewing on a smaller scale, so we’ll have the freedom to experiment and develop innovative beers and offerings, which is really exciting."

The company, which in September announced that it had entered partnership with the New Orleans Saints ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Tyrone City Brewing becomes Tyrone’s first microbrewery
Tyrone’s first microbrewery is up and running and its products soon will be available to purchase, Altoona Mirror reported on October 12.

Stephen and Wendy Grot have established Tyrone City Brewing in the former Moose Lodge building on Logan Avenue.

The Grots also own Ion Power Inc. on Washington Avenue and the Wilson House Bed and Breakfast at Washington Avenue and Ninth Street.

The Grots bought the Moose building, which was constructed in 1927, in 2022. The Moose Lodge ceased operations in 2007.

“The building sat as it was, beer bottles still on the bar and 15 years of rain drained through the building. When we took ownership of the building from Charlie Mills, the interior was infested with pigeons and the lower floors suffered the worst damage of the exposure to water,” Grot said. “Our renovation began with replacing the roof and removing all plaster from the lower level walls revealing the original terracotta block construction. We changed some of the interior room layout, installed all new plumbing, bathrooms and electrical. The structure of the building is sound and the wall and roof are supported with riveted steel members.”

The Grots have poured nearly one million dollars into renovation work and equipment for the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Homewood Brewing Co. to hold grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony on October 18
On Friday, October 18th, Homewood Brewing Co. will officially open its doors in Homewood, Illinois, with a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony, Craft Brewing Business reported on October 14.

Founded by Carmela Wallace in honor of her son, the late rapper Jarad “Juice WRLD” Higgins, the brewery aims to be a vibrant community hub for craft beer, music and great food. The brewery is located at 18225 Dixie Hwy, Homewood, Illinois, and promises to offer a unique, creative space dedicated to Juice WRLD’s legacy.

Juice WRLD, born Jarad Higgins, rose to fame at just 19 with his introspective music that candidly explored themes of addiction and mental health. His career was cut short by his untimely passing in 2019, but his influence remains strong through his music and this new venture. The creation of Homewood Brewing is a tribute to his legacy and a testament to the community that supported both him and his family.

Homewood Brewing’s head chef, Robert Lauderdale, is drawing inspiration from Juice WRLD’s roots, offering a menu of upscale comfort food infused with Creole flavors. Additionally, Brian Wallace, Juice WRLD’s brother, will lead the brewing team, combining seasonal ingredients and innovative brewing techniques to produce an array of ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NJ: Montclair Brewery raising funds to open second facility in East Orange
Montclair Brewery has been a community staple, hosting everything from live bands to game nights to cultural celebrations. So, when locals first heard that husband-and-wife team Leo and Denise Sawadogo were raising funds to open a space in East Orange, some feared the original space would close, especially because of other recent venue closings, Montclair Local reported on October 13.

Putting those craft beer lovers’ anxieties to rest, the pair have assured their patrons that the East Orange location is not a replacement but an expansion to allow for more brewing and production. In fact, the success of the Montclair location and its micro-brewed beers cleared the way for their dream of providing an additional community space for beer enthusiasts to gather and connect.

The new East Orange space will have a much larger brewery and production capability. Denise Sawadogo explains that they outgrew their production needs in Montclair. The brewers are looking toward a future where they don’t need to say “No” to distribution opportunities. Investing in the production is a big step. A related entity owns the East Orange building, so planning for the future feels secure despite financing challenges and wrestling with grant restrictions.

In addition to enlarging the production ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Ferdle Turtle Brewery opens in Schuyerville
There is a new brewery in Schuylerville, WNYT.com reported on October 12.

Ferdle Turtle Brewing Company has opened up on Broad Street. Owner Alex Ferdle said he is thrilled about this new venture and loves welcoming fellow beer enthusiasts into the Ferdle Turtle tap room. Staying true to the brewery’s name, Ferdle said slow and steady growth is the goal for the future of his business.

“We’re starting to sell growlers and hopefully in the next coming year, we’ll be able to sell cans off premises,” he said.

For those who want to try Fertile Turtle Brewing Company beer, the tap room is open Thursday through Saturday. It’s also available for purchase at Fossil Stone Winery in Greenfield.

Brewery news USA, FL: Hoppy Brewing Company announces closure in December
Four friends who shared the dream of opening a microbrewery and taproom together and then made it a reality 2 1/2 years ago are planning to turn off its taps and shut the doors, The Florida Times-Union reported on October 14.

Historically Hoppy Brewing Company, at 1636 North Main St. in the heart of historic Springfield, will close when its lease expires in December, the founders/owners announced on social media on October 12.

"As we come up to our lease renewal, we've reflected on the time and energy it takes to keep the brewery running and beer in the kegs, and have decided it's no longer something we want to continue," they posted on Facebook.

Ryan and Brianna McFarland and Aaron and Natalie Leedy — avid craft brewers as well as Springfield neighbors — opened the microbrewery in May 2022. They couldn't be reached immediately for comment about the pending closure.

Historically Hoppy had moved into the storefront formerly occupied by national award-winning Main & Six Brewing Company, which closed permanently in March 2022 after four years in business.

In announcing the pending closure, they said it was their dream to open a brewery and "we've had a ton of fun" doing it but their ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Temperance Beer Co. announces last call on October 27
Evanston’s first brewery is announcing Last Call, Evanston Now reported on October 16.

Temperance Beer Co., which brews award-winning beer in part of its building on Dempster Street, and sells it in the attached tap room, will serve its final suds on Oct. 27.

In a social media announcement, founder and owner Josh Gilbert said, “Unfortunately, the world of craft beer today is barely recognizable to craft beer circa 2013 [when Temperance opened]. It’s difficult to even imagine that kind of excitement for a new brewery launch these days.”

In an interview with Evanston Now, Gilbert said that craft brewing (small breweries) “is definitely a contracting industry right now.”

Inflation is one culprit.

“We couldn’t raise our prices” and still remain competitive, even as production costs kept going up, Gilbert explained.

Another factor: “American drinking habits changed dramatically after COVID.”

During the pandemic, Gilbert noted, many people simply used food delivery services. But once the COVID threat was gone, the “stay home” habit became more common.

Plus, the more frequent “go out to bars” crowd is consuming less beer.

Ages 21-25,Gilbert noted, may be more into wine, spirits and alcohol-infused seltzer than are their older millennial brothers and sisters.

Legalization of marijuana is likely another reason for not quaffing as ...More info on site

Brewery news Ethiopia: Heineken completes acquisition of Komari Beverages - report
Heineken Brewery has completed the acquisition of Komari Beverages, the supplier of Arada’s beverage products, marking a significant expansion of its presence in Ethiopia’s competitive beer market, Ethio Negari reported on October 13.

According to Capital newspaper, Arada Beer, a relatively new entrant in Ethiopia’s beer market, has quickly gained popularity among consumers.

The manufacturer, Komari Beverages, has successfully concluded negotiations to sell its factory to Heineken, solidifying the multinational’s growing influence in the country’s beverage sector.

Sources indicate that negotiations had been ongoing for several months. The two parties initially reached the final stage of talks in July 2024, but discussions were revisited following changes in the Ethiopian foreign exchange currency market that took effect the same month.

These changes likely impacted the terms of the deal, prompting both sides to reassess certain aspects before moving forward.

The official sale price is expected to be announced by the end of this month, with the formal handover of the factory taking place simultaneously.

Komari’s facility, located in the Cheki area of North Showa Zone in the Amhara Region, approximately 96 km northeast of Addis Ababa, has a production capacity of 27,000 bottles per hour.

The factory, which became operational just three years ago, was built by Ethiopian ...More info on site

Whisky news Indonesia: Diageo expanding manufacturing facility in Indonesia
Diageo is expanding a spirits manufacturing facility in Indonesia that supplies a clutch of markets in Asia Pacific.

The company is adding 8,800 square metres to the site in Tabanan in Bali. Diageo declined to confirm on the current size of the facility and could not comment on how much capacity might increase.

Built in 2014, the factory produces Diageo’s Captain Morgan rum, Smirnoff and Smirnoff Ice vodkas, Gilbey’s gin and Bell’s Scotch whisky, for the Indonesian market.

In a statement, John O’Keeffe, president & CEO of Diageo’s Asia-Pacific division said: “The expansion of our strong supply hub in Bali is key to our wider regional strategy to better service customers and consumers across Asia-Pacific and contribute to Diageo’s global ambition.”

In 2021, the company also began exporting its Smirnoff and Captain Morgan spirits from the facility to Thailand, Timor Leste, the Philippines, Singapore and Malaysia.

Once operational, the newly expanded site is expected to help boost the Asia-Pacific unit’s “contribution to Diageo’s overall product sales and business worldwide”, the company said.

The expanded site is expected to open in the next 18 months, the Tanqueray gin maker told Just Drinks.

When construction is complete, the expanded site is also expected to be running on “95% less ...More info on site

Brewery news Namibia: AB InBev to brew Lion Lager in Namibia
Anheuser Busch InBev (AB InBev), situated in Okahandja, announced that Lion Lager will soon be brewed in Namibia, Windhoek Observer reported on October 13.

The Minister of Industrialisation and Trade, Lucia Iipumbu, shared this information last week during the launch of the local production of Lion Lager in Okahandja.

“Initiatives like today’s launch will further bolster this sector, supporting the government’s goals of sustainable economic growth and industrialisation,” she said.

Iipumbu said the country, like many worldwide, continues to face the challenges posed by global economic fluctuations, underscoring the importance of attracting sustainable investment into the local economy.

According to her, AB InBev’s decision to expand its diversified local presence aligns with the Ministry of Industrialisation and Trade’s vision of broadening the country’s industrial base by enhancing local production capacity and reducing dependency on imports.

In 2023, AB InBev Namibia had set aside approximately N$65.4 million for the construction of solar thermal technology aimed at reducing 700 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

She said that through its solar technology, AB InBev is pioneering innovation with new emission-free solar solutions at its Welwitschia brewery in Okahandja.

“These efforts are indeed complementary to Namibia’s green industrialisation and hydrogen production ambitions,” said the minister.

The Lion Lager brand is not ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Diageo’s Covent Garden brewery delayed until 2025
Diageo’s plans to open a 50,000 sq ft microbrewery and culture hub for Guinness in central London have been pushed into next year, after the lead contractor for the project fell into administration, The Grocer reported on October 15.

Beck Interiors, which was appointed by Diageo to fit out the £73m ‘Guinness at Old Brewer’s Yard’ venture in Covent Garden last November, was placed into administration in July, according to documents filed at Companies House.

Several of the construction firm’s assets, including a contract to upgrade The Dorchester hotel, were purchased in pre-pack deals, according to the administrator’s report.

However, The Grocer understands Diageo has had to seek out a new contractor following Beck’s collapse. This has forced it to push back its plan to open the site by this October.

“While delays are of course disappointing, they are common for substantial construction,” a spokesman for Diageo told The Grocer. “We remain very excited to open the doors of the Guinness Open Gate Brewery in London next year, reaching an even broader audience for Guinness than before.”

Asked if the delays had led to an increase in the cost of the project, the Diageo spokesman declined to comment.

The Grocer understands the disruption has also led ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan: Suntory plans to increase whisky prices
Suntory Holdings CEO Takeshi Niinami has told Time magazine: “we have to brush up so that local consumers think that our brands are more premium than before, so that we can ask for higher prices”, The Drinks Business reported on October 14.

Niinami, who celebrates a decade as Suntory Holdings CEO this month, has revealed that the Japanese company plans to increase its whisky prices to keep up with a “higher tariff world”.

The CEO was asked about navigating “geopolitical headwinds”, particularly recent discussions about raising tariffs on whisky. In response, Niinami said: “First, we have to increase gross margins by efficient operation in our factories. And we have to brush up so that local consumers think that our brands are more premium than before, so that we can ask for higher prices. Second, we produce locally.”

Suntory Holdings, which celebrates 125 years of business this year, has grown to the third-largest spirits producer worldwide under Niinami’s tenure. The company — owner of Yamazaki Japanese whisky as well as Jim Beam, Maker’s Mark and Macallan — is now worth $11 billion.

Its CEO also shed light on the company’s focus on the ready-to-drink (RTD) category. He said: “For RTD, we can find co-partners and ...More info on site
