USA, MO: AB InBev invests in enhancing ist St. Louis brewery
|
AB InBev has made a brand new US$8 million investment into enhancing its Anheuser-Busch St. Louis brewery, The Drinks Business reported on October 23.
The investment is, according to local reports, in addition to the business already having spent nearly US$2 billion on its US-based facilities over the last five years.
Speaking about the spend, Anheuser-Busch CEO Brendan Whitworth said: “Our continued investments in our St. Louis brewery benefit not only our local team, but also our hometown, which continues to be a core part of our identity after more than 165 years.”
Whitworth explained: “This brewery is as iconic as the beer we brew, and these investments help ensure that we not only have the infrastructure but also the people and talent to build on our legacy for generations to come.”
Since 2019, AB InBev has reportedly invested more than US$165 million in its St. Louis campus alone, including renovating and reopening its Technical Excellence Center.
Since its reopening, AB InBev has claimed that the Technical Excellence Center has served 1,500 workers from its various facilities across the US.

Vietnam: Carlsberg Vietnam aims for net zero carbon emissions in production by 2028

Andrew Khan, managing director of Carlsberg Vietnam, has reiterated the brewer’s commitment to sustainable development at the Nordic Day - the Green Economy Forum & Exhibition (GEFE) 2024 in Ho Chi Minh City, with a pledge to achieve net zero carbon emissions in production by 2028, The Investor reported on October 23.
The event, from October 21-23, brought together stakeholders from businesses, governments, and NGOs across Europe and Vietnam to discuss sustainable growth strategies for Vietnam’s economy.
During the Nordic Day within the GEFE: Getting to Green session, discussions focused on collaborative efforts between Nordic countries and Vietnam to tackle climate change and its societal impacts.
One of the four sessions, titled “We Are What We Eat – Food Systems for a Greener and Healthier Tomorrow,” featured industry experts, including Andrew Khan - managing director of Carlsberg Vietnam, who emphasized Carlsberg Vietnam’s proactive steps to minimize its environmental impact and its commitment to sustainability.

USA, CO: Molson Coors completes Golden brewery expansion
|
Molson Coors has completed its 200,000-square-foot brewery expansion in Golden, Colorado. The company stated that this will help reduce carbon emissions and save costs in the long term, Food Dive reported on October 21.
The owner of Coors Banquet and Blue Moon said in a blog post last week its modernization efforts included replacing horizontal fermentation machinery with over a hundred vertical tanks, along with 45 miles of piping and 150 miles of wire.
Molson Coors said the facility will require 25% less energy, capture 30% more carbon than it did previously and save 80 million gallons of water each year.
Peter J. Coors, a fifth generation member of the Coors family, led construction on the project, and said in a statement that testing on its beer brands thus far has been positive.
“I’m proud to say our sensory team has not been able to tell any difference between the Coors Light made with the previous equipment and the new equipment, which is exactly what we wanted,” Coors said. “This is a significant financial investment that really sets Golden up for the next 150 years.”

UK: Asahi slashes alcohol content of Grolsch Premium Pilsner
|
Grolsch Premium Pilsner has had its alcohol content slashed to 3.4% alcohol by volume (abv) in the UK amid shrinking sales and discounted tax rules on weaker brews, ITV.com reported on October 21.
The pilsner beer, which is sold with a 5% abv in Europe, had already been relaunched by Asahi in the UK with a abv of 4% in 2020.
Now, amid a further fall in demand, bosses at Asahi have again slashed the alcohol content carried by the beer.
The decision will reportedly save Asahi UK 23p in excise duty per 440ml can of Grolsch sold.
Speaking to The Grocer, Asahi said it had "learnt a lot" about "consumer preferences and evolving consumption trends," and that the brewer is "confident this still delivers an excellent premium beer that will appeal to a broad range of consumers."
An Asahi spokeswoman said: “Following much analysis, we decided to reformulate Grolsch to a new abv of 3.4%, which went into market earlier this year.
“As with many companies operating complex supply chains, we have experienced an extremely challenging economic climate over recent years.

Morocco: Government looking to increase revenue from taxes on alcohol and cigarettes this year
|
The Moroccan government is banking on revenue taxes on alcohol and cigarettes to surpass MAD 16.4 billion ($1.58 billion), based on data from the 2025 Finance Bill, Morocco World News reported on October 21.
This year’s finance bill introduces measures to increase tax revenue aimed at supporting economic growth, including domestic taxes on alcohol, beer, and tobacco consumption.
The bill is projected to rise 14.49% in tax revenue, totaling MAD 657.8 billion (approximately $63.47 billion). This includes expected revenues of MAD 1.19 billion ($114.91 million) from alcohol, MAD 1.55 billion ($149.76 million) from beer, and MAD 13.7 billion ($1.32 billion) from cigarettes.
A similar strategy was applied in the 2024 Finance Bill, where higher taxes on alcoholic beverages were proposed to address fiscal deficits and growing demands on public resources.
The 2025 Finance Bill also anticipates revenue from taxes on other domestic products, with MAD 854 million ($82.42 million) expected from soda and soft drinks, MAD 60.5 million ($5.84 million) from sugary products, and MAD 19.56 billion ($1.89 billion) from energy products.
At a Council of Ministers meeting on Friday at the Royal Palace in Rabat, chaired by King Mohammed VI, key elements of the 2025 Finance Bill were discussed.

Australia: Australian Grain Technologies releases two new barley varieties
|
Australian Grain Technologies has announced the release of two new barley varieties and five new wheat varieties in time for the 2025-26 season, Grain Central reported on October 21.
“This spring we have released our very first Clearfield barley variety, called Bigfoot CL, and are proud to launch our first udon noodle-quality wheat variety called Rottnest,” AGT head of variety support and marketing Dan Vater said.
“Bigfoot CL is closely related to the varieties that offer good early vigour such as Compass and Commodus CL; however, Bigfoot CL has reduced overall height and we have observed less lodging than other Compass-style varieties”.
“Bigfoot CL has impressed with its yield potential, particularly in low to medium-rainfall environments, and has very good physical grain quality.”
AGT is also releasing its second CoAXium barley, PegasusAX.
“PegasusAX is a great complement to its stablemate Titan AX, being closely related to the Hindmarsh-style varieties like LaTrobe and Spartacus CL, and therefore offering a shorter, more compact plant type than Titan AX, and less prone to lodging.
“The CoAXium system is starting to gain traction out there with growers who are looking for another option for controlling grass weeds in crop.”
