Brewery news USA, MO: AB InBev invests in enhancing ist St. Louis brewery
AB InBev has made a brand new US$8 million investment into enhancing its Anheuser-Busch St. Louis brewery, The Drinks Business reported on October 23.

The investment is, according to local reports, in addition to the business already having spent nearly US$2 billion on its US-based facilities over the last five years.

Speaking about the spend, Anheuser-Busch CEO Brendan Whitworth said: “Our continued investments in our St. Louis brewery benefit not only our local team, but also our hometown, which continues to be a core part of our identity after more than 165 years.”

Whitworth explained: “This brewery is as iconic as the beer we brew, and these investments help ensure that we not only have the infrastructure but also the people and talent to build on our legacy for generations to come.”

Since 2019, AB InBev has reportedly invested more than US$165 million in its St. Louis campus alone, including renovating and reopening its Technical Excellence Center.

Since its reopening, AB InBev has claimed that the Technical Excellence Center has served 1,500 workers from its various facilities across the US.

AB InBev has additionally committed nearly US$1 million this year to help drive economic impact across the broader St. Louis community, as well as investing in ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Molson Coors completes Golden brewery expansion
Molson Coors has completed its 200,000-square-foot brewery expansion in Golden, Colorado. The company stated that this will help reduce carbon emissions and save costs in the long term, Food Dive reported on October 21.

The owner of Coors Banquet and Blue Moon said in a blog post last week its modernization efforts included replacing horizontal fermentation machinery with over a hundred vertical tanks, along with 45 miles of piping and 150 miles of wire.

Molson Coors said the facility will require 25% less energy, capture 30% more carbon than it did previously and save 80 million gallons of water each year.

Peter J. Coors, a fifth generation member of the Coors family, led construction on the project, and said in a statement that testing on its beer brands thus far has been positive.

“I’m proud to say our sensory team has not been able to tell any difference between the Coors Light made with the previous equipment and the new equipment, which is exactly what we wanted,” Coors said. “This is a significant financial investment that really sets Golden up for the next 150 years.”

The business first broke ground on the brewery expansion in the fall of 2020. Tracey Joubert, the company’s chief financial ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Granger City Brewing now open in Granger
A revitalized Granger City Brewing is now open at 109 W. Davilla St. in Granger, Taylor Press reported on October 19.

The city held a ribbon cutting just before the brewery and restaurant began serving patrons at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 18.

In March, owners Natalie and Todd Coporon bought the space that used to house the original Granger City Brewing Co., which closed in July 2021.

“We’ve been waiting for this for a long time, so be prepared to be very busy,” Mayor Monica Stojanik said to the couple at the ceremony.

Natalie Coporon thanked the community for helping the pair get the business off the ground.

“We appreciate all the support, goodwill and help,” she said to a gathering filled with family, friends and supporters. “Lots of people have stopped by to offer help. You talk about a community that comes together, you know, not just in a crisis, but in something that’s gonna help everybody.”

Her thanks included Sawyer Griffis, a teen involved in a traffic accident on a call answered by Todd Coporon, who is a volunteer firefighter. Griffis was stuck between a trailer and a gate.

Griffis, who quickly recovered from his injuries, came to the brewery’s grand opening with his family ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Ontario craft brewers urge government to speed up review of alcohol taxes
Ontario craft brewers say the province needs to speed up its review of alcohol taxes, fearing small breweries will be forced to shut down because of them and be unable to grow amid an expanded retail market, CBC reported on October 19.

Breweries have been holding out hope that some financial relief would be around the corner, but many who make craft beer say they're struggling to stay afloat, noting Ontario pays sky-high taxes to operate craft breweries.

"In comparison, a brewery the same size as Steam Whistle in Quebec pays a little more than $4 million less in tax every year," said Greg Taylor, co-founder of Steam Whistle Brewing.

"It would be great for us to be able to have lower tax costs so that we can invest and produce more jobs in Ontario and provide better services to the new retailers that are just opening up."

The province began its review last year after the organization, Ontario Craft Brewers, launched a campaign highlighting that the province has the highest craft beer taxes in Canada. Local breweries say the longer they operate without any kind of tax reform, the more of these breweries will be at risk of shutting their doors. Now, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Voodoo Brewing prepares to open in downtown Delafield
Bryan Ronning is eager to bring Voodoo Brewing to downtown Delafield, but residents will have to wait a few more months before they can drink a cold glass of Good Vibes (a West Coast sweet IPA) or Thunder Lizard (an Imperial IPA), GMToday.com reported on October 19.

Voodoo Brewing will be one of the commercial occupants of The Grain, a mass timber, four-story building at 705 Genesee St. Ronning said the finishing is being done on the space. He hopes to have Voodoo Brewing open in early 2025.

Founded in 2005 in Meadville, Pennsylvania, Voodoo Brewing Co. has since expanded to have locations around the U.S. This will be the first in Wisconsin. The beer will continue to be brewed in Pennsylvania.

Ronning, who is opening the Delafield location with his parents, Bruce and Donna Ronning, said Voodoo Brewing will offer “beer and food that is just a cut above.”

The initial interior setup will include larger tables for community seating. Ronning said he wants people to come in, hang out and meet the person next to them. Customers will order from the bar or use a QR code to order and a table runner will bring it to them. However, Ronning said his ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Homewood Brewing Company holds its grand opening in Homewood
The Homewood Brewing Company held its grand opening in Homewood on Friday, October 18, honoring the memory of rapper Jarad "Juice WRLD" Higgins, AOL.com reported.

His mother, Carmela Wallace, hosted the ribbon-cutting ceremony, and Homewood Mayor Richard Hofeld cut the ribbon.

The brewery was founded in Higgins' honor, with a focus on addressing mental health and substance dependency.

A percentage of proceeds from an always-on-tap benefit beer will go to Live Free 999, the charity founded in his memory.

The Homewood-Flossmoor Viking Marching Band also took part in the festivities.

Higgins’ brother, Brian Wallace, is leading the brewing efforts, while Head Chef Robert Lauderdale oversees the kitchen.

The menu features dishes inspired by Higgins' aunt's Creole cooking, which he grew up eating.

Brewery news USA, WI: New Glarus Brewing Co. to build $55 mln addition at its headquarters
New Glarus Brewing Co., a craft brewery known for such beers as Spotted Cow and Moon Man Pale Ale, will break ground this month on a $55 million addition at its headquarters, BizTimes reported on October 22.

The 65,000-square-foot expansion will take place at the company’s Hilltop Facility, located at 2400 Highway 69 in New Glarus, a village in Green County. It will include space for brewing, distilling, offices, retail and a beer depot, according to documents submitted to the village of New Glarus.

“The New Glarus Brewing Company is a destination for many, known for its world class beer in a beautiful and fully operational brewery. We receive thousands of visitors, but our current paved visitor parking holds 53 stalls. This has created congestion on our site and has forced us to be closed on the weekends,” according to submitted documents. “Our sites hilly terranean creates a plateau, making parking expansion tricky. We therefore have created a design connecting our facility to the flat area at the base of the hill for parking. The new design steps down the side of the hill and will pass through our existing parking lot.”

The brewery expansion will also include several sustainability efforts like grass ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IA: Kalona Brewing Company ending operations after a 12-year run
A beloved craft brewery is ending its brewing operations after a 12-year run in eastern Iowa, the Iowa City Press-Citizen reported on October 22.

Ted and Becky Nagy, the owners of Kalona Brewing Company based in Kalona, announced the closing in a detailed Facebook post on Oct. 17.

"It is with great sadness that we announce the closure of our business, the Kalona Brewery, as of Nov. 1, 2024," they announced on Facebook.

Kalona Brewing's last day of operation will be on Halloween, Thursday, Oct. 31.

Kalona Brewing Company opened in downtown Kalona in 2012.

The brewery pours craft beer made in-house and serves menu items from its largely made-from-scratch kitchen, which features wood-fired pizzas, burgers, and sandwiches. The company often sources its food from local farms, primarily in Kalona, like Kalona Creamery and Kalona Organic Greens.

The brewery cited the COVID-19 lockdown and the ensuing pandemic as a reason for shuttering. The owners did hint at possibly partnering with other entities in the future.

"We are grateful for the support from the community and our wonderful staff over the years. Unfortunately, we have been unable to recover financially from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic," the post read. "We are currently exploring other business opportunities, including ...More info on site

Andrew Khan, managing director of Carlsberg Vietnam, has reiterated the brewer’s commitment to sustainable development at the Nordic Day - the Green Economy Forum & Exhibition (GEFE) 2024 in Ho Chi Minh City, with a pledge to achieve net zero carbon emissions in production by 2028, The Investor reported on October 23.

Barley news Australia: Australian Grain Technologies releases two new barley varieties
Australian Grain Technologies has announced the release of two new barley varieties and five new wheat varieties in time for the 2025-26 season, Grain Central reported on October 21.

“This spring we have released our very first Clearfield barley variety, called Bigfoot CL, and are proud to launch our first udon noodle-quality wheat variety called Rottnest,” AGT head of variety support and marketing Dan Vater said.

“Bigfoot CL is closely related to the varieties that offer good early vigour such as Compass and Commodus CL; however, Bigfoot CL has reduced overall height and we have observed less lodging than other Compass-style varieties”.

“Bigfoot CL has impressed with its yield potential, particularly in low to medium-rainfall environments, and has very good physical grain quality.”

AGT is also releasing its second CoAXium barley, PegasusAX.

“PegasusAX is a great complement to its stablemate Titan AX, being closely related to the Hindmarsh-style varieties like LaTrobe and Spartacus CL, and therefore offering a shorter, more compact plant type than Titan AX, and less prone to lodging.

“The CoAXium system is starting to gain traction out there with growers who are looking for another option for controlling grass weeds in crop.”

“By using Aggressor herbicide rather than products suited to the Clearfield system, ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Asahi slashes alcohol content of Grolsch Premium Pilsner
Grolsch Premium Pilsner has had its alcohol content slashed to 3.4% alcohol by volume (abv) in the UK amid shrinking sales and discounted tax rules on weaker brews, ITV.com reported on October 21.

The pilsner beer, which is sold with a 5% abv in Europe, had already been relaunched by Asahi in the UK with a abv of 4% in 2020.

Now, amid a further fall in demand, bosses at Asahi have again slashed the alcohol content carried by the beer.

The decision will reportedly save Asahi UK 23p in excise duty per 440ml can of Grolsch sold.

Speaking to The Grocer, Asahi said it had "learnt a lot" about "consumer preferences and evolving consumption trends," and that the brewer is "confident this still delivers an excellent premium beer that will appeal to a broad range of consumers."

An Asahi spokeswoman said: “Following much analysis, we decided to reformulate Grolsch to a new abv of 3.4%, which went into market earlier this year.

“As with many companies operating complex supply chains, we have experienced an extremely challenging economic climate over recent years.

"While we have seen relief from some of the energy and raw material highs of recent years, inflation remains high across the markets where we ...More info on site

Brewery news Morocco: Government looking to increase revenue from taxes on alcohol and cigarettes this year
The Moroccan government is banking on revenue taxes on alcohol and cigarettes to surpass MAD 16.4 billion ($1.58 billion), based on data from the 2025 Finance Bill, Morocco World News reported on October 21.

This year’s finance bill introduces measures to increase tax revenue aimed at supporting economic growth, including domestic taxes on alcohol, beer, and tobacco consumption.

The bill is projected to rise 14.49% in tax revenue, totaling MAD 657.8 billion (approximately $63.47 billion). This includes expected revenues of MAD 1.19 billion ($114.91 million) from alcohol, MAD 1.55 billion ($149.76 million) from beer, and MAD 13.7 billion ($1.32 billion) from cigarettes.

A similar strategy was applied in the 2024 Finance Bill, where higher taxes on alcoholic beverages were proposed to address fiscal deficits and growing demands on public resources.

The 2025 Finance Bill also anticipates revenue from taxes on other domestic products, with MAD 854 million ($82.42 million) expected from soda and soft drinks, MAD 60.5 million ($5.84 million) from sugary products, and MAD 19.56 billion ($1.89 billion) from energy products.

At a Council of Ministers meeting on Friday at the Royal Palace in Rabat, chaired by King Mohammed VI, key elements of the 2025 Finance Bill were discussed.
