Australia: Beer industry facing crisis due to increasing costs and low demand from Gen Z consumers
|
A report by behavioural insights consultancy, Canvas8 explores the shifting preferences of Australian consumers, indicating a decline in beer consumption. The factors driving this change are increasing costs, cultural associations with beer, and the influence of wellness culture among Gen Z consumers.
Similar trends in decreasing alcohol consumption are also evident in Singapore, where local cocktail bars increasingly offer low or no-alcohol beverages. Thus, monitoring the Australian market’s shifting dynamics could provide valuable insights for Singapore’s alcohol industry.
Canvas8, the organisation behind the report, is a consumer insight agency with offices in London, Los Angeles, New York, and Singapore. The company focuses on understanding media, communications, and product development, so as to help their clients better connect with their consumer base.
This particular report, titled “What Do Aussie Drinkers Want from Their Beer?“ by Nikki Natividad, examines changing preferences among Australian drinkers. In particular, there is a growing demand for beers with lower alcohol content.
As a whole, the proportion of Australians who drink beer has decreased significantly. In the last year, 32.5% of Australians drank beer, a 5.5% decrease from the pre-pandemic years. While this number may not initially seem significant, this proportion is the lowest level in around 80 years.
Overall, the decline

Ireland: Diageo to invest EUR30 mln in boosting Guinness 0.0 production
|
Diageo will spend €30 million boosting production of Guinness 0.0 at St James’s Gate Brewery in Dublin to keep pace with customers’ thirst for the non-alcoholic stout, The Irish Times reported on October 25.
The drinks giant says demand for the alcohol-free drink has grown substantially since its launch three years ago.
On Friday it announced plans to invest millions more in its production at the Dublin plant for the Irish and international markets. The move will almost double St James’s Gate’s capacity for brewing to 176 million pints a year and will bring total spending on it to €60 million, Diageo calculates.
Sales of the alcohol-free draught grew almost 50 per cent between February 2023 and February 2024, the company revealed on Friday. It hopes to have the beer in 2,000 pubs across Ireland by Christmas, up from 1,700 currently.
Aidan Crowe, its beer operations director, said the investment reflected “the bright future we see” for non-alcoholic drinks. He noted that it was further evidence of the group’s commitment to Guinness 0.0.
“St James’s Gate is the global hub of Guinness 0.0 production for markets around the world and this investment goes a long way in supporting that work and continues the legacy of

USA, MA: Boston Beer’s third quarter earnings beat analyst estimates
|
The Boston Beer Company, Inc. reported third quarter earnings that beat analyst estimates, but posted full-year guidance below estimates, sending shares down slightly by 0.6% in after-hours trading, Investing.com reported on October 24.
The maker of Samuel Adams beer and Truly Hard Seltzer posted adjusted earnings per share of $5.35, topping the consensus estimate of $5.03. Revenue rose 0.6% year-over-year to $605.5 million, just above analyst expectations of $605.14 million.
However, Boston Beer provided full-year 2024 earnings guidance for a range of $8.00 to $10.00 per share, below the consensus estimate of $9.58. The company cited "somewhat softer near-term category trends."
"We continue to believe that there is significant growth opportunity in Beyond Beer categories despite some near-term variability in alcoholic beverage demand," said Chairman and Founder Jim Koch.
Depletions, a key industry metric measuring sales to retailers, decreased 3% in the quarter. Shipment volume fell 1.9% to approximately 2.24 million barrels.
The company's gross margin improved to 46.3%, up 60 basis points year-over-year, benefiting from price increases and procurement savings.
Boston Beer repurchased $191 million worth of shares year-to-date through October 18. The company also increased its share repurchase authorization by $400 million.

UK: SIBA launches ‘Indie Beer‘ mark to identify independent brands
|
The Society of Independent Brewers and Associates (SIBA) has launched the ‘Indie Beer’ campaign as part of an effort to make it easier for beer drinkers to identify beer from independent breweries, Food Manufacture reported on October 23.
According to SIBA, demand for independent beer remains resilient but issues surrounding access to market and misleading branding persist.
New YouGov data found that 75% of people surveyed believe consumers are being misled when purchasing beer from once independent craft breweries such as Beavertown, Camden and Fullers which are now owned by global beer manufacturers Heineken, Budweiser and Asahi respectively.
Of those surveyed, 40% thought Neck Oil was independent – higher than genuinely independent breweries such as Vocation, Fyne Ales and Five Points.
The research was commissioned by SIBA as part of the launch of the Indie Beer mark, which will be used on beer pumpclips, cans and bottle labels to identify beers as being produced by a UK independent brewery. The campaign also includes a new online ‘beer checker’ tool.
The Indie Beer campaign is open to all independent UK breweries and is supported by consumer and industry organisations such as Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), British Institute of Innkeepers and the Independent Family Brewers of

India: United Breweries to launch Amstel Grande beer in India
|
United Breweries announced on October 24 that it will be launching Amstel Grande, an iconic Dutch premium beer crafted in Amsterdam since the late 1800s, to the Indian market. Though the company did not specify the date of its launch, the announcement comes amidst an uptick of premium beer demand by Indian consumers, The Economic Times reported.
"Amstel, the iconic premium beer brand crafted in Amsterdam since 1870, is excited to announce its debut in India with Amstel Grande. Slow brewed with the finest ingredients, Amstel Grande promises to deliver an unparalleled beer experience to Indian consumers," United Breweries said in an exchange filing.
The alco-bev company also noted in its filing that premium beer consumption in India has seen an increase of 27 per cent in the second quarter of FY2025 - bringing the HY growth rate to 35 per cent. The growth was primarily driven by a demand surge for Kingfisher Ultra, Kingfisher Ultra Max, and Heineken Silver, said the company.
"We remain optimistic about the industry's long-term growth potential, driven by increasing disposable income, favorable demographics, and premiumization," the company further said.
Meanwhile, Dutch beer maker Heineken NV reported a 4.5 per cent volume growth in its premium category for the

UK: Britain's Competition and Markets Authority launches formal probe into Carlsberg’s acquisition of Britvic
|
Britain's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said on October 23 that it has launched a formal investigation into the deal between Carlsberg and Britvic, setting a deadline of Dec. 18 for its phase-1 decision, The Economic Times reported.
In July, Carlsberg struck a deal to acquire the British soft drinks maker for 3.3 billion pounds ($4.28 billion), with the Danish brewer aiming to establish a UK beverage "powerhouse".
The competition regulator said it is assessing whether the deal is expected to result in a substantial reduction in competition in any market in the United Kingdom for goods or services.
"This is a normal process that was expected, and we look forward to working constructively with the CMA as it progresses," a Carlsberg spokesperson told Reuters in an emailed statement.
Britvic did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
