UK: Government slashes draught duty by 1.7 per cent
|
UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves has vowed to take a 'penny off the pint in the pub' as she slashed draught duty by 1.7 per cent - but drinkers will still face higher booze prices, Daily Mail reported on October 30.
In her maiden Budget speech, Ms Reeves unveiled a major tax raid in an effort to plug what she claimed was a £22bn 'black hole' in public finances.
Despite pledges to 'invest, invest, invest' and to pump 'more pounds in people's pockets', the Chancellor's staggering £40bn tax bomb on October 30 has been dubbed by critics as 'the biggest heist in modern political history'.
As part of her plans to try and overhaul public finances, Ms Reeves - who is just 118 days into her term as Britain's first female Chancellor - has hiked bus fares, national insurance, and capital gains tax.
But she said that she would cut duty on draft booze in pubs in a bid to drive down costs for some punters, with a penny reduction for pubgoers getting draught beer and lager at their locals.
'Nearly two-thirds of alcoholic drinks sold in pubs are served on draught,' Ms Reeves told MPs. 'So on October 30, instead of uprating

Spain: Mahou San Miguel opens a brewery inside Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu stadium
|
The two Madrid emblems join forces to open a new experiential -and functional- project inside the famous soccer club. The Mahou San Miguel x Santiago Bernabéu team presents ‘Plaza Mahou‘, a new space dedicated to the iconic Madrid beer brand with a legacy of more than 130 years, Tapas Magazine reported on October 23.
This exciting opening for club members and beer lovers is a collective milestone for both that will allow Mahou to extend its diversification plan; glimpsing its power to generate experiences around its products. The space also makes history within the national beer culture by becoming the first brewery inside a sports stadium.
With this project, Mahou San Miguel pays tribute to its origin, tradition and brewing excellence, but also shows the enormous potential that this company has to innovate and create experiences that connect with different consumer profiles, both national and international,’ says Eduardo Diaz, director of Hospitality, Venues and Commercial Events at Mahou San Miguel. It is a luxury to be able to do it in a place like the Bernabéu which, like our Mahou brand, is linked to the name of Madrid and continues to evolve to contribute to the wealth and projection of the city,’

Japan: One-fourth of Japanese consumers choose low-alcohol beverages
|
Japanese consumers are now choosing low-alcohol beverages driven by health consciousness, according to a GlobalData survey which polled 500 respondents, Retail Asia reported on October 29.
The rising preference is primarily observed amongst the younger generation. The 25 to 34 age bracket had the highest percentage (56%) followed by the 18 to 24 age group at 49%.
In response, Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare recommended alcohol consumption guidelines that prioritise health and promote responsible drinking.
“Consequently, key players in the market are adding low-alcohol by volume (ABV) products to attract health-conscious consumers,” Mariko Kadosaka, key account director at GlobalData Japan, noted.
For example, Asahi Breweries refrains from releasing products with alcohol levels exceeding 8%.
“Low-alcoholic beverages will play a significant role in the country’s drinking culture which will subsequently expand the market,” Mali said.

Nigeria: Nigerian Breweries launch Heineken in 45cl bottles
|
Nigerian Breweries Plc has launched 45cl bottle of its premium beer, Heineken, to solidify its leadership position in the beer market, Business Post Nigeria reported on October 30.
The brewer said the 45cl bottle combines sophistication and convenience because it was crafted with the fast-paced and social lifestyle of Nigerian cities in mind, becoming the perfect companion for any setting.
The unveiling of the addition was done at the Lagos Fashion Week 2024, which attracted several persons from the showbiz industry, its target audience.
The company also used the event to introduce the Heineken 45 Collection, proving once again why it’s a brand that doesn’t just serve drinks—it shapes culture.
The dual launch of the 45cl bottle and the 45 Collection marks a new chapter for Heineken in Nigeria, as it is a reminder that Heineken is more than just a drink; it’s part of the moments, stories, and experiences that shape our lives.
With the 45cl bottle, Heineken brings sophistication to any occasion, while the 45 Collection brings Nigerian creativity to the world stage, connecting fashion and refreshment in a way only Heineken can.
“For Heineken, partnering with Lagos Fashion Week reflects creativity, boldness, and the spirit of innovation—values that Heineken holds dear.
“We’re thrilled to

Ukraine: Ukraine to plant more winter wheat and barley
|
Ukraine will expand areas under winter crops through increasing the production of winter wheat and barley, Ukrainian media quoted First Deputy Agrarian Policy and Food Minister Taras Vysotsky as saying at the Ukraine Media Center on October 25.
Farmers are continuing to sow winter crops, Vysotsky said. Weather has not always been favorable during the autumn sowing campaign, with numerous areas suffering from drought; however, most of the regions saw rains in mid-October, which gives grounds to expect that winter crops will emerge well, he said.
Ukrainian farmers have reduced areas under winter rapeseed by 10% to 100,000 hectares due to adverse weather, Vysotsky said. In particular, farmers in the Dnepropetrovsk region, a major winter rapeseed producer, were unable to sow rapeseed this autumn because of the drought, he said.
"As for winter wheat and barley, we see growth of around 10% in terms of the sowing pace compared to last year. They're both expanding the areas and sowing faster," he said.
As of the start of this week, Ukraine sowed 8% more winter wheat and barley than as of the same dates last year, he said.
Speaking of weather challenges, Vysotsky recalled that weather in November and December 2023 was mild enough to prompt
