Brewery news USA, FL: Chubby Mermaid Brewing Co. already open in Bonita Springs
Another regional brewery launched Oct. 25 in a location off the beaten path near the Collier-Lee County line. Chubby Mermaid Brewing Co. opened its 20 craft beer taps in the Causeway Commerce Park on Old 41 Road, south of Bonita Beach Road in Bonita Springs, Gulfshore Business reported on October 25.

“Bonita now has five breweries in a 5-mile radius,” said Gary Fortin, who co-owns the new local business with Joshua Hoover. “That is a huge thing when it comes to destinations.”

Chubby Mermaid is not a derogatory term, but rather another name for manatees or sea cows. The brewery’s logo features a manatee mermaid holding a mug of frothy beer.

One percent of Chubby Mermaid’s tap sales will be donated to the Save the Manatee Club, the nonprofit organization co-founded in 1981 by singer Jimmy Buffet and Sen. Bob Graham, two Floridians who recently died. The club’s mission is to protect manatees and their aquatic habitat.

Fortin and Hoover are Naples residents who independently have been home brewers for more than 15 years. The two met via YouTube, where they have channels about brewing beer and organized an online home-brewing club called BrewTubers.

Hoover relocated from California to start the local business with Fortin ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MD: Mayan Monkey Brewing Co. has opened and is awaiting state license to brew on-site
Mayan Monkey Brewing Co. has opened at 227 E. Diamond Ave in Gaithersburg, in the former location of Growlers and Summit Station Brewery. While the brewery awaits its state license to brew on-site, it is offering a selection of beers from Flying Dog, Modelo, and Pacifico, The MoCo Show reported on October 26.

The new concept comes from the team behind local favorites Taco Bar El Guero (Rio area), Ixtapalapa (Gaithersburg), and La Gula Mexicana (Germantown). Mayan Monkey Brewing Co. features a menu blending Mexican and American flavors, with options like cheese curds, pretzels, burgers, wings, and tacos. The space also offers live music in the upstairs area and full-service dining downstairs.

“At Mayan Monkey Brewing Co., we’re passionate about bringing you the freshest food and the finest brews. Our menu is a vibrant celebration of Mexican flavors, made from scratch with love and tradition. From our zesty tacos to our refreshing house-brewed beers, every bite and sip is a journey south of the border.”

Brewery news USA, DE: First State Brewing Company planning second location in Rehoboth
A vacant restaurant space on southbound Route 1 outside Rehoboth Beach is set to become First State Brewing Company’s second location, Cape Gazette reported on October 30.

Founded in 2020 by Paul Hester, the Middletown-based tap house and kitchen officially announced it was coming to town Oct. 25 on its Facebook page. However, the painting of the sign on the building throughout the week made the future opening known days beforehand.

Jeff Horne, First State Brewing Company marketing and creative specialist, said there’s not much to share on the new location because they’re still working on construction and refining a lot of the other details.

“We don’t have an opening date at this moment,” said Horne in an email Oct. 29.

The space in The Shops at Sea Coast Plaza has been home to TGI Fridays, which closed in July 2019, and The Pond, which moved from downtown Rehoboth Beach in early 2021 before closing in September 2023.

According to a permit from the Office of the State Fire Marshal hanging in the window of the restaurant, the space is about 6,270 square feet and has an occupant load of 228.

Brewery news USA, NB: Kinkaider Brewing Company planning new location in Kearney
Kinkaider Brewing Company is moving its retail license from Grand Island to Kearney, KSNB reported on October 25.

Kinkaider co-owner Cody Schmick said they are planning to open up a location right off of I-80 in Kearney.

Schmick said they are partnering with the Younes family to be a part of their complex, which continues to expand with hotels, restaurants and the new sports complex being built in that area.

“We have the opportunity to be a part of something much bigger,” he said.

Schmick made the announcement on Facebook Live on October 25 that they plan to build a location from the ground up with both Kinkaider and their other brand, Bierhaus, side-by-side.

“This is a new model for us,” Schmick said, describing the site’s layout as similar to Cunningham’s at the Lake, where seating overlooks the water.

Kinkaider’s new development will offer scenic lake views from the opposite shore.

The Kearney location will include twin buildings with outdoor areas for families, play spaces for children, and additional businesses nearby.

“(We are) really excited for the opportunity and ability to be there,” he said.

Schmick added that the facility will feature a retail store with merchandise showcasing Kinkaider products.

He said the plan is to open this new spot ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NH: Enfield brewery plans in jeopardy as property listed for sale
A plan to open a brewery next spring in a former laundromat in Enfield is in jeopardy after the building’s owner decided to put it up for sale instead, Valley News reported on October 28.

Brian Degnan said he decided to sell 59 Main St. due to “the bureaucracy that exists and the amount of effort it takes to invest money in Enfield,” he said in a phone interview.

Degnan’s concerns center on the town’s zoning process, including a pair of zoning variances the town refused to grant.

In the meantime, the brewery operator said it’s too soon to know if the new taproom will still open.

“There’s so much unknown right now,” Dan Thomas said in a phone interview. “We hope to” still make something happen in Enfield.

Hoptimystic, which Thomas owns with his wife, Kelly, is operating a tasting room in the former Anchorage restaurant in Sunapee Harbor through the end of November. The beer is brewed at a facility in Springfield, N.H., which is not open to the public.

In July, Degnan received approval from the Enfield Planning Board for Hoptimystic Brewing to operate in the former laundromat, which Degnan has owned since 2017.

In October, the Enfield Zoning Board of Adjustment granted Degnan’s ...More info on site

Barley news Ukraine: Ukraine to plant more winter wheat and barley
Ukraine will expand areas under winter crops through increasing the production of winter wheat and barley, Ukrainian media quoted First Deputy Agrarian Policy and Food Minister Taras Vysotsky as saying at the Ukraine Media Center on October 25.

Farmers are continuing to sow winter crops, Vysotsky said. Weather has not always been favorable during the autumn sowing campaign, with numerous areas suffering from drought; however, most of the regions saw rains in mid-October, which gives grounds to expect that winter crops will emerge well, he said.

Ukrainian farmers have reduced areas under winter rapeseed by 10% to 100,000 hectares due to adverse weather, Vysotsky said. In particular, farmers in the Dnepropetrovsk region, a major winter rapeseed producer, were unable to sow rapeseed this autumn because of the drought, he said.

"As for winter wheat and barley, we see growth of around 10% in terms of the sowing pace compared to last year. They're both expanding the areas and sowing faster," he said.

As of the start of this week, Ukraine sowed 8% more winter wheat and barley than as of the same dates last year, he said.

Speaking of weather challenges, Vysotsky recalled that weather in November and December 2023 was mild enough to prompt ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Government slashes draught duty by 1.7 per cent
UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves has vowed to take a 'penny off the pint in the pub' as she slashed draught duty by 1.7 per cent - but drinkers will still face higher booze prices, Daily Mail reported on October 30.

In her maiden Budget speech, Ms Reeves unveiled a major tax raid in an effort to plug what she claimed was a £22bn 'black hole' in public finances.

Despite pledges to 'invest, invest, invest' and to pump 'more pounds in people's pockets', the Chancellor's staggering £40bn tax bomb on October 30 has been dubbed by critics as 'the biggest heist in modern political history'.

As part of her plans to try and overhaul public finances, Ms Reeves - who is just 118 days into her term as Britain's first female Chancellor - has hiked bus fares, national insurance, and capital gains tax.

But she said that she would cut duty on draft booze in pubs in a bid to drive down costs for some punters, with a penny reduction for pubgoers getting draught beer and lager at their locals.

'Nearly two-thirds of alcoholic drinks sold in pubs are served on draught,' Ms Reeves told MPs. 'So on October 30, instead of uprating ...More info on site

Brewery news Spain: Mahou San Miguel opens a brewery inside Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu stadium
The two Madrid emblems join forces to open a new experiential -and functional- project inside the famous soccer club. The Mahou San Miguel x Santiago Bernabéu team presents ‘Plaza Mahou‘, a new space dedicated to the iconic Madrid beer brand with a legacy of more than 130 years, Tapas Magazine reported on October 23.

This exciting opening for club members and beer lovers is a collective milestone for both that will allow Mahou to extend its diversification plan; glimpsing its power to generate experiences around its products. The space also makes history within the national beer culture by becoming the first brewery inside a sports stadium.

With this project, Mahou San Miguel pays tribute to its origin, tradition and brewing excellence, but also shows the enormous potential that this company has to innovate and create experiences that connect with different consumer profiles, both national and international,’ says Eduardo Diaz, director of Hospitality, Venues and Commercial Events at Mahou San Miguel. It is a luxury to be able to do it in a place like the Bernabéu which, like our Mahou brand, is linked to the name of Madrid and continues to evolve to contribute to the wealth and projection of the city,’ ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan: One-fourth of Japanese consumers choose low-alcohol beverages
Japanese consumers are now choosing low-alcohol beverages driven by health consciousness, according to a GlobalData survey which polled 500 respondents, Retail Asia reported on October 29.

The rising preference is primarily observed amongst the younger generation. The 25 to 34 age bracket had the highest percentage (56%) followed by the 18 to 24 age group at 49%.

In response, Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare recommended alcohol consumption guidelines that prioritise health and promote responsible drinking.

“Consequently, key players in the market are adding low-alcohol by volume (ABV) products to attract health-conscious consumers,” Mariko Kadosaka, key account director at GlobalData Japan, noted.

For example, Asahi Breweries refrains from releasing products with alcohol levels exceeding 8%.

“Low-alcoholic beverages will play a significant role in the country’s drinking culture which will subsequently expand the market,” Mali said.

Brewery news Nigeria: Nigerian Breweries launch Heineken in 45cl bottles
Nigerian Breweries Plc has launched 45cl bottle of its premium beer, Heineken, to solidify its leadership position in the beer market, Business Post Nigeria reported on October 30.

The brewer said the 45cl bottle combines sophistication and convenience because it was crafted with the fast-paced and social lifestyle of Nigerian cities in mind, becoming the perfect companion for any setting.

The unveiling of the addition was done at the Lagos Fashion Week 2024, which attracted several persons from the showbiz industry, its target audience.

The company also used the event to introduce the Heineken 45 Collection, proving once again why it’s a brand that doesn’t just serve drinks—it shapes culture.

The dual launch of the 45cl bottle and the 45 Collection marks a new chapter for Heineken in Nigeria, as it is a reminder that Heineken is more than just a drink; it’s part of the moments, stories, and experiences that shape our lives.

With the 45cl bottle, Heineken brings sophistication to any occasion, while the 45 Collection brings Nigerian creativity to the world stage, connecting fashion and refreshment in a way only Heineken can.

“For Heineken, partnering with Lagos Fashion Week reflects creativity, boldness, and the spirit of innovation—values that Heineken holds dear.

“We’re thrilled to ...More info on site
