France: Brewers fear extra taxes on sugar and alcohol could spike beer prices
|
Brewers are struggling to swallow proposals to increase taxes on alcoholic and sweetened drinks under France's latest budget, currently being debated by parliament. While supporters say the measures would raise much-needed funds for the French health system, beer makers warn they could end up penalising independent breweries already finding it tough to survive, Yahoo!News reported on November 3.
Under pressure to reduce France’s mammoth deficit, the new government is looking for ways to save billions of euros on social security – and raising duties on potentially unhealthy food and drink looks set to be part of the plan.
Members of parliament have proposed amendments to the funding bill that would target alcohol and processed sugar, and specifically high-strength, sweetened beers.
The farthest-reaching proposal would expand the “social security contribution” levied on certain products and allocated to funding national health insurance. Currently applied only to drinks with an alcohol content of 18 percent or more, the revised tax would be collected on all alcohols, including wine and beer.
Another amendment would see a new duty introduced on beers stronger than 5.5 percent, while a further proposal seeks to tax flavoured, sweetened beers containing the equivalent of at least 20 grams of sugar per litre.

Cameroon: Beer prices up as bars adjust costs following government backlash
|
Since November 1, 2024, many bar owners in Cameroon have raised their prices, increasing the cost of beers and soft drinks by CFA50 to 100 FCFA. This decision has angered Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana, Cameroon’s Minister of Commerce. His enforcement team sealed off several establishments on November 4 for illegally raising prices on products that require government approval for price changes, Business in Cameroon reported on November 5.
In a statement issued on November 4, Minister Mbarga Atangana reminded everyone that beer and soft drinks are indeed on the list of items that must go through a price approval process. He emphasized that the recent unilateral price increases by bar operators are invalid and without effect.
The tensions between the government and bar owners stem from a revision of terms between industry players, which led to the introduction of additional charges. Bar owners quickly passed these new costs onto consumers. However, a source from the Cameroon Alcohol Producers Association (CAPA) denied that such measures were in place across the association.
The Minister's November 4 statement highlighted recent changes in agreements between at least one brewery and its partners that have resulted in the price hikes seen since November 1. The statement indicated that

Cyprus: October beer shipments up 14.8%
|
Beer deliveries from factories in Cyprus recorded a significant increase both in the domestic market and, notably, in exports, according to the Statistical Service of Cyprus.
Specifically, the total quantity of deliveries for October amounted to 4,212,952 litres, marking a 14.8% increase compared to the same month in 2023.
The quantity of beer delivered to the domestic market in October 2024 was 4,084,636 litres, reflecting a 12.1% increase compared to the same period last year. On the other hand, beer exports saw an impressive rise of 410.9%, reaching 128,316 litres, up from just 25,116 litres in October 2023.

Tanzania: Serengeti Breweries calls for more favourable tax and policy environment
|
Serengeti Breweries Limited (SBL) has called for creating a more favorable tax and policy environment to optimize government revenue generation and ensure the sustainability of businesses. The brewer made this appeal over the weekend at a meeting with the Parliamentary Committee for Industries, Trade and Environment, IPP Media reported on November 4.
“An unpredictable tax environment or one that is in favour of one player is a disincentive to the industry growth and government revenue generation,” said SBL Managing Director Obinna Anyalebechi, citing the current excise tax concession of 620/- per litre on beer made from local malt as one among discriminatory taxes.
The tax concession poses a 32% excise tax gap compared to beer from imported malt, which is taxed at 918/—per litre. Importing brewers also have to suffer additional costs related to paying import duty and the effects of forex fluctuations.
Only one player currently enjoys the lower excise tax on beer made from local malt leaving two other beer producers with smaller production capacities – SBL and East African Spirits Limited – in the disadvantaged position of paying the higher 918/- excise tax band. “Our small beer volume does not justify investment into a malting facility at the

Australia: New project aims to open new market opportunities for Australian barley growers
|
As demand grows for Australian barley and malt in Central and Latin America, Australian growers will benefit from a new project designed to present diversification opportunities in these markets, Beer & Brewer reported on November 4.
Delivered by the Australian Export Grains Innovation Centre (AEGIC), an initiative of the Western Australian State Government and Grains Australia, the new project will gather information from the Central and Latin America markets, such as preferred quality and functional properties, to better inform the breeding and market engagement strategies of Australian barley growers.
The project is already underway, with AEGIC personnel set to meet with customers in Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Brazil and Chile this month to understand their needs and foster new opportunities.
Embarking on the visits is AEGIC’s Markets Manager – Lead, Mary Raynes, and Barley and Oat Quality Program Manager, Jack King, building on market engagement conducted in Central and Latin America last year.
Raynes said: “This major project will give the Australian barley industry access to objective intelligence on these markets’ preferred malting barley quality attributes.
“These insights will enable Australian breeding companies and Grains Australia to make more informed decisions around breeding and classification of Australian barley varieties, and will assist Australian trade representatives when

China: Budweiser China signs deal to expand indoor hop cultivation
|
Budweiser’s Chinese arm has signed a new deal with partner Jiangsu Nongken Group to expand indoor hop cultivation, further localizing the production of ingredients in the world’s largest beer market by sales, Yicai Global reported on November 4.
The agreement, inked during Budweiser China's fourth annual Growers Day in Sheyang county, Jiangsu province focuses on technological innovation in domestic barley and hop cultivation. This year’s event, held on Oct. 31, was themed around ‘Seed With Tech, Brew for Future.’
Under the agreement, Budweiser Brewing Company China and JSFEC Malting, which is a subsidiary of Jiangsu Nongken Group, will jointly improve the quality, yield and cultivation technology of domestic hops.
The pair have already opened a 2,200-square-meter modern indoor hop cultivation facility in the city of Lianyungang in Jiangsu, using advanced agricultural technologies including air-source heat pumps and integrated irrigation systems.
“It’s new additional business, which is good for us, good for the quality of our beer, and good for the farmers because it helps them to increase their revenues,” Jan Clysner, vice president of sustainability and procurement at Budweiser Brewing Company APAC, told Yicai.
“Normally hops are only grown in very specific areas worldwide,” he said. But “for a few years we have been piloting

Ukraine: Hops area down from 7.4 thousand ha in 1990 to 0.3 thousand in 2023
|
Over the past thirty years, Ukraine has reduced the area under hops from 7.4 thousand hectares in 1990 to 0.3 thousand hectares in 2023, according to Oleksandr Haidu, chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Agrarian and Land Policy.
“Last year, only 460 tonnes of hops were harvested in Ukraine with an average yield of 13 c/ha,” he wrote on Facebook following a roundtable discussion on the implementation of EU requirements in the hop industry, Business News from Ukraine reported on November 1.
According to Gaidu, this reduction in acreage has led to the fact that domestic hops cover only 20% of the needs of breweries, while the rest of the products are imported.
In his opinion, the figures demonstrate the industry’s need for development and support, in particular by encouraging the use of domestic hops in brewing.

India: Indian single malt whiskies gaining traction and snapping up awards abroad
|
At Bungalow, celebrity chef Vikas Khanna’s Indian restaurant in New York’s East Village, a dozen Indian single malt whiskies are spotlit in their own section on the spirits list, SCMP.com reported on November 4.
Just a few years ago that would not have been possible, says Sameer Bhatt, a partner in the restaurant. Although India is the world’s largest whisky market, its whiskies are typically blends, often made with a rum-like molasses distillate.
Until recently, Indian single malts were virtually unknown, if they were even available outside the subcontinent.
Now, with domestic whisky consumption rising hand in hand with the country’s growing affluence, distilleries are turning out high-quality single malts in quantities available to export – and they are not only gaining traction but also snapping up awards.
Amrut Triparva was named in the best in class section of the US-based Whiskies of the World Awards 2024, while in 2023, Indri Diwali Collector’s Edition 2023 took home the top prize in the same competition.
This year, Indri Founder’s Reserve 11-year-old wine cask was named one of the top 15 whiskies at the International Whisky Competition, another US-based event.
Now, Bhatt says, “my Indri is selling more than my Macallan”.
