USA: Market share of beer in glass bottles falls again in 2023
|
Glass bottles’ share of the U.S. beer packaging mix fell again in 2023, according to 2024 estimates shared by the Beer Institute. That substrate’s prominence in beer has been on the decline for the last decade, barring a slight uptick in 2022.
The Beer Institute, a national trade association representing large and small American brewers, importers and industry suppliers, says it has tracked beer packaging trends since 1981, using information from major brewers, the U.S. Department of Commerce, the Can Manufacturers Institute and the Glass Packaging Institute.
The group noted that in 2023, the national breakdown for beer packaging was 64.1% in aluminum cans, 26.9% in glass bottles, and 8.9% draft. For imported beer specifically, more than half (55%) was packaged in glass bottles, with 40% in cans and 5% on draft.
On a state-by-state basis in 2023, Maryland had the highest proportion of beer sold in glass bottles at 35.9%, with 56.1% in metal cans and 8% on draft. Arkansas had the highest proportion in metal cans at 75.3%, with 20% in glass bottles and 4.7% on draft.
Overall, beer shipments dropped off in 2023, according to the group’s data. Beer shipments totaled about 191.8 million in 2023, down from 202.2 million in

The Netherlands: Heineken invests €45 million in global R&D centre
|
Heineken has revealed it has invested €45 million in a new global research and development centre in the Netherlands, The Drinks Business reported on November 12.
The plans for the construction of the site in Zoeterwoude – named the Dr. H.P. Heineken Centre – will cover an area of 8,800 m² and employ staff from across 12 countries with a planned opening date of around mid-2025.
Speaking to the drinks business, Heineken’s director of research and development Hubert te Braake said: “In the Dr. H.P. Heineken Centre, we will work from our science foundation and combine with the craftmanship of our master brewers to create products that are both exciting but also natural, sustainable and healthy for consumers.”
The centre is also being positioned to play a crucial role in Heineken’s innovation and growth strategy for brands such as Heineken, Desperados and Amstel and will include offices, laboratories, a model service centre and sensory research and packaging development department.
The plan is for the team to also work with the brewer’s global R&D network, which includes hubs in Mexico, South Africa and Southeast Asia.
Braake told db: “Research and development fosters innovation, ensuring Heineken remain competitive and anticipate future needs. We are working on groundbreaking

Denmark: Carlsberg prepares its first beer with regeneratively grown raw materials
|
Carlsberg Denmark has entered into an agreement with DLG and Viking Malt to purchase Danish malt barley grown according to regenerative principles. The malt barley will be used for a specially brewed Carlsberg, which will be available in 2025 and be Carlsberg's first beer in Denmark with regenerative raw materials, the company announced on November 11.
As part of its sustainability strategy, Together Towards ZERO and Beyond, Carlsberg Group has committed to sourcing all raw materials according to regenerative principles by 2040. This transition will benefit both climate and the environment.
The first Danish example of this transition will be seen in the new year, as Carlsberg Denmark has just purchased malting barley grown according to regenerative principles. These principles include no- or low-tillage cultivation, soil covered for 95% of the year, at least three crops on the same plot over five harvest seasons and avoiding overuse of synthetic fertilisers and pesticides by using the minimum required by the crop. The purchase was made in connection with this year's harvest from 100 hectares across two farms in Zealand.
The parties expect to deliver up to 500 tonnes of malt to Carlsberg's breweries in Copenhagen and Fredericia. This means up to 3.3 million litres

Nigeria: Guinness Nigeria announces prices hike
|
Guinness Nigeria, a major beverage maker, has announced an upward review in the prices of some products, TheCable reported on November 11.
In a memo dated November 8, and signed by Olusanya Adesanya, its commercial director, the Guinness said the price adjustments would take effect from today, November 11.
Guinness Nigeria is a producer of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages such as Guinness, Malta Guinness, amongst others.
“This is to inform you of the price change on some of our BEER SKUs/brands effective Monday November 11, 2024, as shown in the table below,” the memo reads.
“This is due to the prevailing economic realities which have impacted significantly on our current cost of doing business.
“Whilst appreciating your valued partnership, please be assured of our commitment to continue to support your distribution efforts as usual.”
Speaking on the new products’ prices; the company said a crate of large Guinness will cost N13,590 for wholesalers, N14,070 for retailers, and N1,300 per bottle.
For medium Guinness, the organisation said wholesalers will now pay N16,230 for a crate, retailers will pay N16,610, and a bottle will cost N1,100.

Brazil: Heineken installs its first glass recycling centre in Brazil
|
The Heineken Group has installed its first glass recycling centre in Brazil, Glass International reported on November 11.
With an initial investment of R$ 8 million, the facility, already installed in Jaboatão dos Guararapes, in Greater Recife, will be responsible for processing thousands of tons of glass annually.
The global brewer recently invested R$ 1.2 billion in its brewery in Igarassu, in the Recife Metropolitan Region.
Heineken’s Vice President of Sustainability and Corporate Affairs, Mauro Homem, said Pernambuco was chosen because of the competence and openness that the entire state government team demonstrated to Heineken.
The company’s goal is to collect glass from all possible areas to increase the material’s collection nationwide.
“We only recycle 20% of all glass in Brazil, so 75% is still available to be recycled. We would like to collect glass wherever it may be—in condominiums, public buildings, large generators, in commerce. Not only in Pernambuco, but also in other states,” he said.
The facility will focus on providing proper treatment for post-consumer packaging glass. In partnership with Ambipar, the company will also sell the material to the glass industry, creating a circularity cycle and generating income.
The companies anticipate that the investment in the glass processing system will generate 60 direct and

UK: Wetherspoons pubs to stop selling San Miguel beer
|
Wetherspoons will soon stop selling a major beer brand recently voted the nation’s favourite, sparking outrage amongst pundits, The Independent reported on November 12.
From November, the massive pub chain will no longer serve San Miguel, the popular Spanish pale lager. Pundits will instead be offered the Italian Poretti, at less than £4 a pint in most locations.
Founded in 1890 in Manila, Phillipines, San Miguel was named the nation’s favourite beer in a YouGov poll from the start of October.
Mahou San Miguel (MSM), the brand’s Spanish wing, was set up in 1953 and has been partnered with Carlsberg Marston’s Brewing Company (CMBC) for the past 15 years.
However, this partnership will dissolve at the end of the year, with many speculating this to be a factor in Wetherspoon’s executive’s decision.
Speaking about the end of the license deal, CMBC chief executive Paul Davies said: “Naturally, we are disappointed by the decision, and are working to mitigate the impact on our business.”
“We are incredibly proud of our many achievements over more than 15 years with MSM, massively driving distribution and significantly growing San Miguel brand volume.”
The news comes after outspoken Wetherspoons boss Tim Martin warned at the start of the month that price rises

Mexico: Barley industry facing serious challenges due to drought
|
Barley production in Mexico is facing serious challenges due to drought caused by climate change, which could have a negative impact on the national brewing industry. Mexico is one of the leading barley exporters and efforts are underway to adopt regenerative cultivation methods to withstand extreme weather conditions, UkrAgroConsult reported on November 8.
The Altiplano, the main barley producing region supplying the brewing industry, produces an average of 481,000 tons of barley per year, representing 93% of the country’s total production. However, changes in rainfall in recent years have reduced yields, from 769 mm in 2021 to 589 mm in 2023. In the current agricultural cycle, of the 102,000 ha planted to barley, 4,200 ha were affected by drought and yields were only 1.78 t/ha, below the required break-even level of 2.7 t/ha.
The brewing industry, which accounts for 1.6% of Mexico’s GDP and supports more than 700,000 jobs, is being jeopardized. The recent Cultivando un México Mejor (Growing a Better Mexico) initiative by CIMMYT and Heineken aims to introduce new technologies and sustainable agricultural practices, which has shown positive results such as water savings and increased yields. Experts emphasize the importance of adapting and training farmers in new methods to cope

In particular, they harvested 49.9 million tonnes of grain (47.2 million tonnes a week before) and 19 million tonnes of oilseeds (18.8 million tonnes), Ukrainian media reported with reference to the Agrarian Policy and Food Ministry on Friday.
