Brewery news USA: AB InBev announces $14 mln investment in its Houston brewery
Anheuser-Busch, United States’ leading brewer, has announced a $14 million investment in its Houston brewery, part of its continued commitment to local communities and economic growth. The investment will enhance the facility's infrastructure, including upgrades to maintain quality standards, maximize efficiency, and reduce water usage.

The brewery, operational since 1966, has been central to Anheuser-Busch's $2.3 billion capital investments in Texas. The company, with over 120 facilities nationwide, together with its distributor partners, supports 65,000 American jobs. This new investment in Houston is aimed at reinforcing the company's brewing excellence and contributing to the local economy.

Brendan Whitworth, CEO of Anheuser-Busch, emphasized the importance of investing in the communities where their employees live and work, stating that it aligns with the company's longstanding practice of producing high-quality products and driving community prosperity. Ryan Hudgins, Sr. General Manager of the Houston Brewery, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the company's nearly 60-year history in Texas and its role in the local economy.

The Houston brewery's upgrades will include new air rinsers on can lines to decrease water usage, replacement of critical manufacturing equipment, and enhancements to wireless and network connectivity. These improvements build upon last year's $22.5 million investment focused on safety and efficiency.

Whisky news Canada, ON: Diageo pauses plans for Ontario whisky distillery
An international company that announced plans two years ago to build a C$245-million whisky distillery in St. Clair Township has told municipal officials the project has been paused, London Free Press reported on November 20.

Diageo, a multinational beverage alcohol company, initially said the site near Sarnia would start making Crown Royal Canadian whisky brand by 2025.

Later, the company said the project would be built in stages, beginning with warehouses and a substation on about 161 hectares (nearly 400 acres) of industrial-zoned land on Moore Line near Highway 40, across from Nova Chemicals’ Moore Site.

St. Clair Township Mayor Jeff Agar said municipal officials spoke last week with company representatives during an online meeting about the project.

“They just said they’re going to pause it for a bit,” he said. “They didn’t say they weren’t going to do it.”

Diageo officials issued a statement Wednesday morning about the change of plans.

“Given the dynamic nature of our broader business and our emphasis on productivity, we have decided to pause the development of our facility in Lambton County’s St. Clair Township,” the statement read. “We will be revisiting plans and timeline at a later date, as part of our regular review of investments and priorities across ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Goat Patch Brewing announces pending acquisition of Pikes Peak Brewing Company
Goat Patch Brewing, a popular veteran-owned brewery in Colorado Springs, has announced the pending acquisition of Pikes Peak Brewing Company, as the owners of Pikes Peak look to retire, FOX21 News Colorado reported on November 18.

Pikes Peak Brewing Company (PPBC) has been serving the Monument community for over 13 years. Now, Chris and Judi Wright, founders of PPBC, are retiring from the brewing industry.

“It has been an honor to serve our Monument neighbors and the Colorado Craft Beer Community,” said Chris in a press release. “The bonds we’ve formed over the past 13+ years have meant the world to me and our entire staff. I am excited to watch the future of Pikes Peak Brewing with the continued support from Monument and the Colorado Craft Beer consumer.”

Goat Patch said its mission and vision aligned with that of PPBC, which made the acquisition “a natural step.”

“Chris and Judi have created something truly special, and we’re excited to build on their work while unlocking new opportunities for both brands,” said Justin Grant, co-owner of Goat Patch Brewing Company. “Our goal is to merge the strengths of both breweries, ensuring that the spirit of Pikes Peak Brewing Company remains a cornerstone of the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Sapporo’s Stone Brewing to pull out of all of its export markets in 2025
US craft beer pioneer Stone Brewing is pulling out of all 50 of its export markets from January 2025, the Drinks Business reported on November 20.

The brewery, founded by Greg Koch and Steve Wagner, was sold to Sapporo in August 2022 for US$165 million (approx. £130 million) and has since been renamed Sapporo-Stone.

CEO Zach Keeling said of the withdrawal: “This decision was not made lightly. Stone’s international export business makes up about 1% of our total sales. Despite our team’s strong efforts, the current environment has challenged our growth.

“We have a clear and very promising plan for future growth, which requires us to concentrate our focus on the US market where both Stone and Sapporo brands are experiencing the most success. We thank our international fans for their years of support.”

In May this year, the newly formed Sapporo-Stone announced its plans to become the 10th largest brewery in the country, which it hopes to achieve through the investment of US$20 million in Stone’s Escondido, California brewery and US$40 million in the Richmond, Virginia plant, which should give a capacity of between 700-800,000 US barrels (approximately 800-900,000 hectolitres), and means Sapporo is no longer reliant on brewing in Canada and Vietnam ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Brewfinity Brewing Company setting up a second brewery in Oconomowoc
Brewfinity Brewing Company will take over a picturesque lakefront store site as the setting for its second brewery, with plans that include making it an entertainment center as well, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported on November 20.

Owner and brewmaster Chad Ostram, who bought and revamped Sweet Mullets Brewing Co. in Oconomowoc in January 2016 and adopted the Brewfinity name two years later, announced in mid-November that the company is expanding into the village of Pewaukee in spring 2025.

It will operate in the space vacated by VeloCity, a bicycle shop that closed in the spring after eight years at 203 W. Wisconsin Ave. in downtown Pewaukee. The store, which itself had a "libation station" bar frequented by cyclists, was known in part for its scenic location across from Lakefront Park with a view of the lake.

"Brewfinity has been looking to add a second location for the last several years, everything from building a new facility to buying an existing venue to renting space and doing a buildout," Ostram said in a news release. "We have finally found a location we are excited about as it fits into our model and is financially feasible to pursue."

Ostram said Brewfinity will transform the Pewaukee store ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Molson Coors tries to claw back trademark victory from Stone Brewing
If the high-profile jury trial between Molson Coors and Stone Brewing was a battle of David and Goliath, then its appeal amounts to a sequel in which Goliath tries to claw back David's victory, Courthouse News Service reported on November 19.

Molson Coors argued before a panel of Ninth Circuit judges on November 19 that the decision in a trademark dispute against Stone Brewing was based on faulty legal reasoning and asked the panel to reverse the lower court verdict.

“No reasonably prudent beer consumer would ever confuse the two, especially because Stone IPA is priced at three to four times the price of the economy Keystone Light,” said Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan attorney Kathleen Sullivan, who represents Molson Coors.

Oral arguments took place before a three-judge panel in the Robert F. Peckham U.S. Courthouse in San Jose.

San Diego-based craft brewer Stone Brewing sued the beer conglomerate previously known as Miller Coors in 2018 claiming its success was derailed when the company tried to revive waning sales of its economy beer Keystone Light by rebranding the lager.

The new, flashy bright blue Keystone Light beer cans featured the word “stone" in a large, modern, slanted script, separate from the word “key” in a ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Boston Beer Co. to expand Samuel Adams brewing operations in West End
The Boston Beer Co. recently purchased more than an acre of land in the West End near its Samuel Adams Brewery on Central Parkway in Boston for close to $4 million, Hamilton County Property records show, Cincinnati Enquirer reported on November 15.

Doing business as American Craft Brewery LLC, the Boston-based brewer founded by Cincinnati native James Koch purchased more than a half dozen parcels on Nov. 6 consisting of industrial buildings and vacant land between Findlay Street and Livingston Street, west of John Street, property records show.

The biggest purchase was an old manufacturing building at 517 Findlay St. that sold for $3.44 million.

The building is just a few blocks away from the brewery at 1625 Central Parkway, which is the main production brewery for Samuel Adams beers, according to the company. The company also owns The Samuel Adams Cincinnati Taproom at 1727 Logan St.

"The purchase of additional land in the West End is part of our overall investment in the Samuel Adams Cincinnati Brewery that is intended to help streamline operations and create efficiencies throughout the brewing, packaging, and shipping processes,'' Brittany Zahoruiko, senior manager of communications at Boston Beer, said in a statement to The Enquirer.

Zahoruiko declined further comment.

Brewery news USA, CA: Border X Brewing at risk of closing by year end
The Barrio Logan neighborhood has a long and rich history in the Latino and Chicano community. Border X Brewing along Logan Avenue in San Diego has been a big part of it since 2013. But the owner, David Favela, could now be at risk of shutting it down, NBC San Diego reported on November 17.

The coronavirus pandemic was tough for a lot of businesses, including Border X Brewing. Favela said they had to close down several locations, and now the one on Logan Avenue is the last location standing. Favela said the closures resulted in a lot of debt, and now he's hoping the community will step in to help keep the lights on.

"There are nearly 100 micro-preneurs on the block; artists, merchants, activists, that have spaces that depend on the foot traffic that comes through this community," said Favela.

Favela has since taken to social media to call on the community through an online fundraiser. Although he is worried about potentially losing his business, he's also concerned about his neighbors and what more closures could mean for the Latino and Chicano culture of Barrio Logan.

"It's been a Latino community since 1881 when it was originally subdivided, and it has been ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: 14er Brewing to close for good on November 23
For Andrew Kaczmarek, the most heart-wrenching parts about shutting down his Denver brewery are the memories of all the “great people and so many great friends coming through,” The Denver Post reported on November 19.

But Kaczmarek and business partner Nato Francescato — who have been friends since they attended Wheat Ridge High School — will close 14er Brewing on Saturday, November 23. The brewery and its large beer garden are located at 3120 Blake St. in the River North Art District.

“It’s a double-edged sword for sure. Lots of emotions going on right now, so it’s hard to pin down everything. Definitely a bittersweet situation for sure,” Kaczmarek said.

“For us, it’s a combination of a lot of different factors,” he continued. The brewery’s lease expires this month, and the number of people coming through the doors doesn’t justify trying to renew, especially as rents in RiNo continue to rise. “It’s a large space and very expensive. Property tax, rent, and labor costs have made it a challenge to operate.”

Before the pandemic, 14er got a lot of early afternoon business walk-in traffic, but that business hasn’t come back, Kaczmarek explained. “It’s really sad because we have done so much work to this ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Elysian Brewing closes Seattle production brewery and taproom
Elysian Brewing’s Georgetown production brewery will close Dec. 31 and its taproom closed permanently on November 14, a company spokesperson confirmed on November 15.

It’s unclear how many jobs will be affected by the closures, which follow a year of unionization efforts at the Seattle-based craft brewery — purchased by Anheuser-Busch in 2015 — and represents the latest shake-up in the city’s swirling beer scene.

“This update impacts a very small number of Elysian employees,” said an Elysian spokesperson. “We are committed to ensuring that this transition is as smooth as possible for our people.”

The spokesperson did not confirm the number of employees affected but disputed a report from Washington Beer Blog that as many as 90 people will lose jobs.

Elysian is the second-largest brewery in the state of Washington, known nationally for its Space Dust IPA and locally for its Great Pumpkin Beer Festival. According to Puget Sound Business Journal, Elysian produced 49,885 barrels of beer last year, behind only Georgetown Brewing (121,190 barrels) and ahead of Fremont Brewing (43,116 barrels).

Behind the scenes, labor tensions were also brewing.

In October last year, 33 Georgetown production facility employees voted to join the Teamsters union Local 117. This past September, employees picketed outside the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Two Bandits Brewing to close its Coldwater brewpub
Two Bandits Brewing will be closing its brewpub at 61 West Chicago, Coldwater in the former Kerr Hardware building effective Wednesday, November 27, WTVB reported on November 18.

The business announced on its Facebook page on November 18 the location in downtown Coldwater will be converted to a brewhouse and distribution center which they say will allow them to make better use of their equipment and resources.

The brewpub has been open in downtown Coldwater for three years.

The Facebook post went on to say, “To everyone who enjoyed a meal or pint at our place, many thanks for spending your hard-earned dollars here. To our staff members, thank you for working with us and for us. Working in the service industry isn’t easy, and we have loads of appreciation and respect for the time and effort you put in at Two Bandits. We wish you all the absolute best.”

While the brewpub will cease to operate after November 27, Two Bandits Brewing says it isn’t goodbye and that the shift in operations will allow them to devote time and resources to expanding their distribution partnerships.

Gift cards and 2024 Brew Crew memberships will be honored at Two Bandits Brewing in Hicksville, Ohio.

Whisky news UK: Bacardi completes expansion of Scotland’s Aultmore distillery
A significant expansion of Scotland’s Aultmore distillery has been completed, along with the addition of three new warehouses at Bacardi’s Glasgow facility. This multi-million dollar investment by Bacardi, the Puerto Rican producer of Dewar’s single malt whisky, is designed to bolster its position in the Scotch whisky category through extensive upgrades across its Scottish production sites, FreshlyBottled.com reported on November 11.

At the Poniel blending and maturation center in southeast Glasgow, Bacardi has introduced three advanced aging warehouses with a new, more efficient design that boosts storage capacity. In Speyside, the Aultmore distillery recently completed an upgrade to enhance efficiency and safety, incorporating new technology to reduce both energy and water usage. The enhancements include a new tun room, still house, boiler house, and a closed-loop cooling tower.

"Our investment in Aultmore and Macduff distilleries, along with the Poniel blending and maturation center, marks an important step in our ambitious plans for premium and ultra-premium whiskies," said Keith Hogg, Bacardi's vice president of supply chain for Europe.

Whisky news UK: Scotland's oldest working whisky distillery planning to stop using peat in production
Scotland's oldest working whisky distillery has announced plans to say 'farewell to peat' from next year, Yahoo News UK reported on November 19.

The Glenturret has started the transition to move away from using peated malt in its production in 2025 and will later remove peated expressions from its core range from 2026.

Although originally using peat in the 18th and 19th centuries, much of The Glenturret’s whisky making has been unpeated in style.

The distillery introduced Ruadh Maor, a peat-smoked form of The Glenturret whisky in 2009, which alongside their unpeated spirit, has been produced annually.

The decision to no longer include Peat Smoked releases in The Glenturret’s award-winning core range, has been made with "a clear future house style in mind", celebrating the Crieff distillery’s distinctive light and fruitful new make spirit, nurtured in predominantly American oak sherry seasoned casks.

This transition has been announced just as The Glenturret is recognised as Walpole’s Sustainable Luxury Brand of the Year.

Explaining the important balance between distilling a high-quality spirit whilst reducing impact, Ian Renwick, distillery director at The Glenturret, said: “We honour the environment as deeply as we do our craft and that is the mantra for The Glenturret of the future.

Brewery news UK: Price hikes offer chance for Guinness rivals as Diageo pushes zero alcohol brew
Diageo needs its leading stout beer Guinness to keep growing fast and is pushing a zero alcohol alternative. But price hikes are turning off some UK customers and opening the door to rivals such as Heineken's Murphy's, Reuters reported on November 18.

Guinness has been a much-needed bright spot in earnings for the world's top spirits maker, under pressure after a downturn in sales of other key brands like Johnnie Walker whiskey in some markets helped force a profit warning last year.

Diageo has made continued momentum for Guinness a key part of its growth strategy. Future drivers include a potential roll-out of Guinness 0.0, the zero-alcohol version, on draught in pubs beyond Ireland. It is currently testing the move at The Devonshire pub in London.

But years of double-digit growth for Guinness have caught the eye of rivals, including the world's top beer maker Anheuser-Busch InBev which hope to become more serious competitors to Guinness, a dark beer with a rich malty taste.

Meanwhile, a series of price hikes has irked Guinness customers like Shane Ranasinghe, who with co-directors runs seven pubs across south London, including The Montpelier in Peckham and The Railway in Streatham.

He and two other UK publicans Reuters spoke to ...More info on site

Brewery news UK & India: BrewDog closes two flagship bars in Mumbai in a blow to India expansion
BrewDog, the UK’s biggest craft beer brand, has closed its two flagship Mumbai bars, in a blow to its plans to scale up in the country and tap the growing number of drinkers, the Financial Times reported on November 19.

The BrewDog bar in Bandra West, a suburb that is home to many Bollywood stars and is known for its liberal nightlife, as well as its bar in the office district of Lower Parel, have been closed since the summer.

The company’s logos have also been taken down from the locked-up properties, according to checks by the Financial Times. BrewDog now has only two bars open in India, having first set up there in 2021.

Pratekk Chturvedi, a director of Aloha International Brewpub which operates the BrewDog India franchise, told the FT that the landlords had wanted the bars to close and that the franchise operator had filed legal cases to reclaim “business losses that we are facing”. BrewDog declined to comment.

Even before the closures, BrewDog had struggled with obtaining consistent beer supplies in India’s financial capital. Brewery news India: India’s first airport microbrewery launches in Goa
Susegado, India’s first airport microbrewery, has officially launched at Goa’s Manohar International Airport, Asia Brewers Network reported on November 15.

The name is derived from the Goan word “Susegad” which means relaxation and ease. Susegado is the brainchild of a partnership between local brewer Rising Tide Beverages and restaurant company Lane Nine Hospitality and Radiance, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of India Retails & Hospitality Private Ltd (IRHPL).

Spanning over 5,000 square feet, Susegado’s ambience was inspired by a blend of vintage Goan home decor and the sophisticated feel of a jazz bar. The distinctive design is intended to make tourists and local visitors feel at home while enjoying a freshly brewed, authentic Goan beer.

Central to the brewhouse’s offerings are its lineup of freshly brewed beers, each crafted using unique ingredients from the region. Its signature brews include Poder’s Pilsner, a crisp beer brewed with upcycled Goan bread; Kokum Gose, a tangy creation featuring kokum extract in a German-style beer; and an English Ale designed to please both seasoned beer lovers and adventurous newcomers. The speciality brews are complemented by a menu of traditional Goan dishes.

“We are thrilled to introduce Susegado at the Manohar International Airport with a vision of ...More info on site
