Anheuser-Busch, a leading domestic manufacturer and brewer of Michelob ULTRA, Busch Light, Budweiser, and Bud Light, announced on December 2 a new $10 million investment in its Jacksonville brewery. Over the last 5 years, Anheuser-Busch has invested nearly $2 billion in its facilities across the country to help create and sustain jobs and drive economic prosperity in the communities where it operates and its employees call home.
Brendan Whitworth, CEO of Anheuser-Busch, stated, "Investing in the communities where our people live and work is part of who we are. USA, VA: Chilly Hollow Brewing Company already open in Berryville
|
Northern Virginia is rich in breweries and wineries and the latest one just opened over the holiday weekend. It’s goes by the charming name Chilly Hollow Brewing Company, The Burn reported on December 2.
Chilly Hollow is located in Berryville, Virginia at 669 Chilly Hollow Road. To help you beer lovers geo-locate that, it’s just off Route 7 about 5-10 minutes down the road from the Bear Chase Brewing turn off.
“We are a new craft brewery located on the rolling hills of an operating cattle farm,” the brewery’s website reads. “Chilly Hollow Brewing Company offers beer crafted on site by an award-winning brewmaster as well as local wine, cider, bar food, and grass-fed beef raised right in the brewhouse’s backyard.”
And indeed — they sell various cuts of steaks right on site.
The beer menu at Chilly Hollow includes beers such as the Vienna Lager, the Pop Pop’s Pilsner, a Hazy New England IPA, and the Chilly in the Hollow, which is described as an amber ale with added chocolate malts.

USA, AL: Ethos Craft Brewing holds grand opening in Cullman
|
A crowd of friends, family and fellow patrons gathered to celebrate the grand opening of a pair of new businesses in Good Hope, Cullman on November 29. Ethos Craft Brewing and Bloom Winery cut the ribbon on their new locations and officially opened up their doors to a crowd of locals and Ethos owner Paul White was excited to see years of preparation culminate in Friday’s celebration, The Cullman Tribune reported.
“I started brewing professionally about 10 years ago and I was at Goat Island Brewing for about five years and then I was at TrimTab Brewing for three years. The last three years I’ve been learning the sanitary side of it and the dairy industry,” White said. “I’ve worked for Dairy Farmers of America (DFA) out of Birmingham. Ever since I started in this, I’ve wanted my own place and my own flavors and the freedom to express what I wanted to do.”
Ethos and Bloom Winery have been open throughout the week and White has been moved by the support they’ve already received from the community.

Crafted Hope Brewery on South County Trail welcomed customers for the first time on Black Friday.

USA, GA: Voodoo Brewing Co. opens its newest location in Roswell
|
Voodoo Brewing Co., the high-energy, less-than-traditional brewpub franchise, continues its rapid growth with the grand opening of its newest location in Roswell, Georgia. This marks the 24th Voodoo Brewing Co. brewpub and the brand’s first entry into the Georgia market, opening on December 14 at 1010 Mansell Road, Roswell, Georgia 30076, FS Magazine reported on December 2.
“This is just the next step in our growth plans,” said Matteo Rachocki, CEO of Voodoo Brewing Co. “We are pumped to be expanding in Georgia, and we know the Rouses will do a fantastic job representing the brand and creating that community-first brewpub feel we all know and love.”

USA, MI: Upper Hand Brewery being sold to California-based Seven Beverages, Inc.
|
Bell’s Brewery’s Upper Peninsula offshoot, Upper Hand Brewery, is being sold by the Bell’s parent company in a deal expected to close in early 2025, MLive.com reported on December 3.
New Belgium Brewing informed Upper Hand employees of the pending sale of the Escanaba-based brewery on Nov. 19.
The buyer, California-based Seven Beverages, Inc., is in the process of securing its alcohol license in Michigan, according to a statement from New Belgium.
Once the company has obtained its license, it will assume operations of Upper Hand Brewery, which was opened by Bell’s founder Larry Bell in 2014.
New Belgium will continue to operate the 20-barrel brewing facility and the Escanaba taproom until that time.
Upper Hand, which began distributing in the Lower Peninsula in 2020, has since expanded its footprint into northern Wisconsin and Minnesota.
The brewery was last sold as part of the 2021 sale of Bell’s Brewery to Australian-based beverage company, Lion, which is owned by Kirin Holdings, of Japan.
Lion acquired New Belgium two years prior to obtaining Bell’s and Upper Hand. Bell’s and New Belgium merged leadership teams initially, with Bell’s later becoming a division of New Belgium in 2023.

Canada, NL: Dildo Brewing Company increasing its footprint with a new facility
|
A Newfoundland brewery is increasing its footprint with a new facility aimed at almost tripling its beer production, CBC Lite reported on December 3.
Pam Goodyear, head of sales for the Dildo Brewing Company, says demand has continued to grow since the business opened seven years ago.
She said 90 per cent of Dildo's tap sales happen on-site during the tourism season.
"It makes it a little bit challenging to expand to accounts across the island and make sure that everyone gets that product that they're really, really craving," Goodyear told CBC Radio's St. John's Morning Show.
"So to solve this problem, [the owners] had basically repurposed the old fish plant in New Harbour."
The four-vessel, 20-barrel automated brewhouse is the first of its kind in Newfoundland, Goodyear said, explaining that the expansion had been in the works for years ahead of Friday's grand opening.
"Everyone's just, you know, really excited to finally be able to show the public what we've been working on for the past two years to really bring craft beer on a huge scale from Dildo Brewing to the rest of the folks who really want to experience our product," she said.

USA, CT: Hopmeadow Brewing Company announces closure at the end of the year
|
Hopmeadow Brewing Company in Avon has announced it will be closing its doors after eight years in business, Yahoo reported on December 2.
The owner of the popular brewery, located at 205 Old Farms Road, made the surprise announcement in a Facebook post, stating that the establishment will close at the end of the year.
“The Hopmeadow family is closing the brewery at the end of this year. We thank the community for welcoming and supporting us and helping us have our little dream of owning a family business,” the brewery said on social media. “We hope to see you this holiday season and would love to share a pint and celebrate the past, the present and future endeavors.”
Hopmeadow Brewing Company opened back in 2017 and is the vision of chef-turned-brewer Bryan Hickey, who along with the help of his family, has run the day-to-day operations. Hickey is the brewmaster, while his son Gabriel, has helped as assistant brewer, and his daughter Olivia, is the cashier. Hickey’s wife Christy is the artist and sign-maker and runs the tap room.

USA, MA: Redemption Rock Brewing Company to close for good after nearly six years in business
|
Redemption Rock Brewing Company, at 333 Shrewsbury St. in Worcester, will close after nearly six years. Its last day of business is Sunday, Dec. 29, This Week in Worcester reported on December 1.
In an announcement on social media, the company says that, “Despite our best efforts, we simply haven’t been able to grow the business enough to remain open. And we’ve run out of time.”
The Redemption Rock event calendar and operating hours will remain through its closing date. According to its website, the operating hours for Redemption Rock are:

USA, NC: Mannkind Brewing shuts down
|
After being in business for a little more than a year, Mannkind Brewing in Leland has shut down, WWAYTV3 reported on December 2.
The brewery posted the announcement on Facebook on Sunday, saying it would not be opening that day as they were officially closed for business. Shortly after, the brewery deleted its social media.
The post read in part, “This decision has not been made lightly, but circumstances have led us to this path. Please know that your kindness and encouragement have meant everything to us.”
The brewery held its official grand opening in August of 2023.
This closure follows a nationwide trend of the craft beer industry struggling to make ends meet.
The North Carolina Craft Brewers Guild said 34 breweries opened and 17 closed across the state in 2023.

France: Winter barley sowings reach 98% of planned area in week to November 25
|
France’s winter barley sowing reached 98% of the planned area in the week to Monday November 25, up from 96% the previous week. This matches the five-year average and exceeds the 90% rate observed in 2023 at the same date, according to the latest weekly report from FranceAgriMer.
Emergence increased to 88% from 80%, approaching the five-year average of 91%. Early tillering rose to 34%, compared to 28% in 2023 and close to the five-year average of 36%.
Crop conditions for winter barley remained stable at 84%, consistent with the previous week and slightly above the 82% recorded for the 2024 harvest.

Tanzania: Beer excise structure hurting smaller players in Tanzania
|
As beer consumers warm up to merriment of this year’s festive season, many may not be aware of the sad reality that most of their preferred brands may not last on shelves long enough, The Citizen Tanzania reported on December 1.
Early in November, the Managing Director of Serengeti Breweries Limited (SBL) Obinna Anyalebechi, warned of an unprecedented looming disruption on Tanzania’s beer industry that may lead to closure of business by smaller payers.
Obinna was referring to recent changes to Tanzania's beer excise tax structure that have raised concerns among smaller brewers, who argue that the current system disproportionately benefits larger producers and stifles competition within the industry.
The introduction of a Sh620 per litre excise tax concession in the 2021/2022 fiscal year for beer made from local malt, has created a significant divide between the giants and the smaller players. Larger brewers equipped with the resources to build and operate malting plants, have capitalized on this concession.
In contrast, smaller brewers, limited by their production capacity, face substantial barriers. The cost of establishing a malting facility is estimated to range from Sh40 to 50 million, an investment, according to Obinna is simply out of reach for many smaller players.

India: Himalayan distillery starts whisky production

Himmaleh Spirits has begun whisky production at its new distillery in Uttarakhand, India, which will produce Himalayan single malt, The Spirits Business reported on December 2.
Located in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, the distillery uses Forsyths pot stills from Scotland and 100% Indian barley for production. Nestled in the Himalayan foothills, the family-owned distillery was founded by Ansh Khanna and Samarth Prasad in 2023.
Himmaleh Spirits produces Kumaon & I gin, which is made with 11 locally sourced botanicals and spring water, as well as cold-brew coffee liqueur Bandarful.
Located across nine acres, the whisky distillery has an annual production capacity of 900,000 litres of pure alcohol.
The Indian barley used for whisky making is sourced from local farms and distilled from a lengthy fermentation process of more than 90 hours.
To help create the whisky, Himmaleh Spirits’ distillery general manager Shivaji Chandekar has joined forces with Christian Perez Solar, production manager at Scotland’s Arbikie Distillery.

UK: 'Dry Christmas' on the rise with nearly half of young Brits cutting back on alcohol
|
According to a study, nearly half of UK’s Gen Zs are joining the 'Dry Christmas ' movement. A survey of 2,000 adults revealed that 78% of those between 18-25 plan to start their Dry January early and have a 'dry' Christmas too, MSN.com reported on December 1.
The motivation behind this trend among younger drinkers includes a healthier lifestyle, financial mindfulness, and the empowerment of making personal choices. In contrast, only 6% of Baby Boomers plan to avoid alcohol during Christmas this year.
Over two thirds of those who are reducing their intake this Christmas believe they can enjoy the festivities just as much without alcohol.
A quarter expressed a preference for moderating their drinking with no-and-low alcohol options at work Christmas parties, a figure that rises to 35% among the youngest workers.
Brian Perkins, president of Budweiser Brewing Group UK&I, who commissioned the research, commented: "Moderation is no longer limited to awareness months and days, it is now part of our everyday lives."
"Efforts to moderate in January have been brought forward into the festive period, and throughout the rest of the year, as we see more people choosing no-and-low alcohol alternatives as their drink of choice."

The Netherlands: Two Heineken breweries enter third week of strikes
|
Strikes are taking place at two Heineken breweries in the Netherlands this week, after workers declined an updated proposal on wages and working conditions from the brewing major, Yahoo Finance reported on December 2.
Local union FNV confirmed "hundreds" of workers are downing their tools from December 2 until Wednesday, December 4 at the Den Bosch and Zoeterwoude breweries.
On Tuesday, December 3, "major action" is also due to take place at the Heineken Experience visitor centre in Amsterdam, led by 250 employees.
Walkouts began at both breweries three weeks ago, taking place on 20, 26 and 27 November.
Speaking on the strikes, Nurettin Altundal, director of FNV Food Industry said: “Heineken has brought this on itself. The management does not want to move an inch in the direction of the employees. So after first one day and last week two days, we are now striking for three days in a row. We will continue to do so until Heineken agrees on a good collective labor agreement for the people"

Sri Lanka’s Lion Brewery (Ceylon) Plc, the island’s top beer producer has initiated talks with UK-based Diageo Plc to produce international spirit brands under license, Chief Executive Rajiv Meewakkala was quoted as saying by EcononyNext on December 4.
Lion already has about 90 percent of the local market which is growing slowly and has also started exporting to boost the market.
Expanding into spirits will open up new market for the firm.
“One of the main things what we will be looking at is trying to manufacture the international brands locally, that means Vat 69, Smirnoff, all those international brands of Diageo,” Meewakkala said.
“So, we have started conversations with them and it’s positive. Now we are currently looking at the feasibility and the commercial feasibility, so whatever comes out will be in 26.”
Lion Brewery already license produces Guinness, a beer brand owned by Diageo. Expanding into spirits will take the firm to Gin, Brandy and Vodka segments.
Diageo also produces Scotch whiskies like Johnny Walker.
Lion Brewery has just commissioned a high tech brewery called the innovation centre that allows the firm to design and fine tune new beers targeting foreign markets and tourists.
