USA: Craft beer sector sees decline in production, closings outpace openings in 2024

As 2024 comes to a close, the Brewers Association (BA)—the not-for-profit trade association dedicated to small and independent American craft brewers—recaps a year of decelerated growth and continued honing of offerings.
In the BA’s midyear survey, craft saw a slightly more significant estimated decline in production (-2%) compared to the full year 2023 data (-1%). There were no significant year-over-year (YOY) variations in sales volume share by channel, and one distributed channel did not overtake another, suggesting a balance between where consumers are purchasing and where breweries are supplying.
In the second half of the year, Q3 scan data suggested weaker performance than the first half of the year, though there has been some deceleration of declines in recent periods. This suggests a full-year number that may be weaker than the midyear estimate.
“Craft has been going through a painful period of rationalization as demand growth has slowed and retailers and distributors look to simplify their offerings or add options for flavor and variety outside of the craft category,” said Bart Watson, vice president of strategy and membership, Brewers Association. “That said, breweries have reacted to these changes by focusing on distribution, continuing to innovate in their taprooms and brewpubs, creating groups and

USA: Tariffs proposed by Trump to slow growth of imported Mexican beer
|
There is no doubt beers imported from Mexico have enjoyed great success in recent years in the US. Modelo Especial is now the top-selling beer in America. And collectively, import beer sales now surpass those of domestic premium beers, Forbes reported on December 10.
But President-elect Donald Trump has shared on Truth Social that he intends to impose 25% tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada immediately after he is sworn in on January 20, 2025, unless what he characterizes as the flow of migrants and drugs into the United States is stemmed by those countries. Whether those tariffs will ever be implemented is the subject of much debate, but if so, they would have far-reaching effects, including in the world of beer.
“Trump’s proposed tariffs, if put in place, would almost certainly raise the price of beer,” said Kate Bernot, lead analyst with Sightlines, a beverage alcohol insights platform, in an email interview. “Economists I’ve spoked to say they’d likely increase imported beer prices from affected countries at a rate roughly equal to that of the tariffs. USA: January-October beer shipments down 3.3%

The Beer Institute recently published an unofficial estimate of domestic tax paid shipments by beer brewers for October 2024.
The October 2024 estimate is 11,400,000 barrels, an increase of 1.2% compared to October 2023 removals of 11,269,946.
January-October shipments are seen down 3.3% at 125,155,733 barrels.
The November 2024 domestic tax paid estimate is scheduled to be released on January 7, 2025.

Canada: 2025-26 recommended malting barley varieties list includes both favourites and a few new names
|
Next year’s recommended malting barley varieties include old maltster favourites and a few newer names, The Western Producer reported on December 6.
The Canadian Malting Barley Technical Centre revealed its 2025-26 Recommended Barley Varieties List Nov. 21. Five varieties made the cut: AAC Connect, CDC Fraser, CDC Churchill, AAC Synergy and CDC Copeland.
The centre’s annual recommendations are based on the strength of a variety’s agronomic traits, malting characteristics and market demand. The guide is designed to help stakeholders meet the domestic and export needs of end users.
“These varieties reflect the strength and stability of Canada’s malting barley production while also supporting the development of new and innovative options,” wrote Peter Watts, managing director of the centre, in a news release.
Players across the value chain, including growers, processors, exporters and seed companies, were consulted in the centre’s decision process.
AAC Synergy, CDC Copeland and AAC Connect represent trusted standbys both domestically and for export, the centre noted. Newer varieties like CDC Fraser and CDC Churchill are steadily gaining traction with domestic producers and showing potential in export markets.

USA, VA: Chilly Hollow Brewing Company hosts grand opening in Berryville
|
Anew brewery has opened its doors in Clarke County. Chilly Hollow Brewing Company, a new brewery on a Berryville cattle farm, hosted its grand opening in early December, Northern Virginia reported on November 6.
The new space is located at 669 Chilly Hollow Rd., Berryville, just off Route 7. Visitors to the brewery will find a menu of craft brews, courtesy of head brewer Chris Jacques, who joined the team after 20 years in the brewery business, according to a Facebook post from Chilly Hollow.
The brewery prides itself on having something for everyone. Its website boasts more than a dozen types of beer, available in either 16-ounce pours or by the pitcher, along with locally sourced wines from The Winery at Bull Run and Rappahannock Cellars. For those not drinking, there are non-alcoholic beers, soda, and nitro cold brew on tap from area coffee shop Cordial Coffee Co.
There’s a full menu of food options as well, ranging from bar-food appetizers like chicken wings and pretzel bites to full meals like barbecue sandwiches and burgers.

USA, CA: Full Circle Brewing Company announces closure by the end of the year
|
Full Circle Brewing Company, a Fresno brewery, announced it is closing its doors by the end of the year on December 31st, KMPH reported on December 7.
It is currently located in Fresno's brewery district.
It says it will be moving to its production warehouse with plans to bring it to life again.
The company's CEO Arthur Moye and COO David Apkarian explain how they are merging operations for a bigger, better venue for 2025.
"Right now, we're operating two separate businesses. So, merging these two locations allows us to have one business under one roof," Moye said.
Full Circle will be relocating just a few blocks away on F street near Ventura Street in Fresno.
Moye says it's where their brewery was born.
Moye says it will continue to operate as a brewery and an entertainment venue but now combined in the larger space.
The warehouse is producing more than 25,000 barrels a year of their craft beer.
Although the business started in Fresno, Moye says, it now has footprints all over California and other states throughout the United States.
He says the goal in 2025 is to expand brewing, production and distribution capabilities with more staff on site as the company continues to grow.

USA, MN: Kasson's Chaotic Good Brewing Company to close on December 23
|
After about two years, Kasson's Chaotic Good Brewing Company is closing on Dec. 23, 2024, according to a social media post from the business, Post Bulletin reported on December 10.
Scott and Molly Stroh started with an in-home operation in 2020 and expanded to an off-sale permit in 2021. They opened the taproom and brewing space in fall 2022. The Stroh family "made many new friends, had great adventures and made some great beers," their post on Tuesday, Dec. 10 said. They are grateful to have shared a "pint with this amazing community."
"With a flood of emotions and many tears we have to announce that Monday December 23 will be our final day open," the post said. "We have poured our heart and soul into Chaotic Good, and we have had the support of so many amazing people in this community. Unfortunately, we we are no longer able to keep it up."
The brewery has hosted many community events, including a livestream of the Kasson-Mantorville School Board meetings and free professional development for teachers.

USA, TN: Watauga Brewing Company to close on December 21
|
A downtown Johnson City brewery and taphouse announced it will close later this month.
On Monday, Watauga Brewing Company confirmed over social media that it will close on Dec. 21.
The West Market St. brewery, bar and restaurant opened in 2020 and featured the city’s first rooftop bar. Four years later, ownership said a combination of challenges forced the closure.
“Unfortunately, the timing of our grand opening was full of challenges, as it coincided with the start of the pandemic shutdown,” the social media post states.
The brewery also cited struggles to find financial stability due to worker shortage and rising cost supplies as other factors in the closure.
“And so we are full of gratitude and sadness as we close this chapter of our lives,” the post reads. “We would like to thank both our dedicated employees and the support of our customers. We look forward to seeing what wonderful opportunities await our staff and hope that our customers remember us fondly.”
Watauga Brewing Company made several changes earlier in 2024, opening a new French restaurant on the second floor and rebooting the rooftop bar.

USA, TX: Man Overboard Brewing Co. to close after three years in San Antonio
|
Another local brewery is following the recent trend of beer makers shuttering in San Antonio. Man Overboard Brewing Co. announced overnight that it would be closing permanently before the end of December, MySA reported on December 9.
"It is with heavy hearts we announce to you Man Overboard Brewing Company will be closing our doors after 3 great years of brewing, fun, and friendships," the brewery wrote on social media. "Our final day will be December 22nd. But before we go, we want to celebrate with YOU—our loyal family and friends who made this journey unforgettable."
Man Overboard Brewing Co. is owned by the Merriman family, whose father-and-son duo Ron and Justin Merriman started the brewery toward the end of 2021. Ron Merriman is a veteran who served 30 years in the Navy, according to a 2022 report from KSAT. Man Overboard produced a number of craft beers along with hard and frozen seltzers and some food items during its three years in business.

USA, IL: Forgottonia Brewing to close their doors at the end of the month

After roughly five years in business, the owners of Forgottonia Brewing, at 324 N. Lafayette Street in Macomb, have announced they will close their doors at the end of the month, WGEM reported on December 6.
According to a Facebook post, their doors will close at the end of the day on Dec. 28.
The Facebook post states in part, “This was an incredibly difficult decision, but one made after thoughtful consideration of our journey and challenges.”
The owners are hoping to find new ownership of the space.
Forgottonia Brewing won the Macomb Small Business Competition in 2018.

USA, NY: Mount Vernon’s Alternative Medicine Brewing Company closing December 28th
|
Alternative Medicine Brewing Company, which opened in December 2022, is closing Dec. 28th, Lohud reported on December 6.
The news was posted on Instagram saying the realities of running a small business have caught up with the microbrewery. "While we've poured our hearts and souls into AMBC, we simply don't have the resources to keep going," reads the post.
This is the second beer spot to close in less than a month. Sim Coe Beer Bar, in Scarsdale for two years, is ending its run Dec. 27. Both Sim Coe's Jeff Spychala and AMBC owners wrote on social media the "heavy heart" it took to get them to this place.
"Five years ago we set out to build a brewery in a disused space in Mount Vernon, brew some rad beer, and create an inviting space where people come could together and have a good time," said AMBC's Jordan Hahn and Tom Ryan.
"We've had some incredible moments from the release of our first batch of DDH IPA to rocking out at festivals and collaborating with amazing breweries. We've met so many wonderful people who have become like family...we'll miss you all dearly."

France: Winter barley and soft wheat condition declines slightly in France
|
The condition of French soft wheat and winter barley declined slightly last week, though most crops were in a good state ahead of winter, data farm office FranceAgriMer said on December 6.
Farmers in France, the European Union's biggest grain producer, are wrapping up soft wheat and winter barley planting. A drier November let growers make up for earlier rain delays that had threatened a repeat of last year's waterlogged campaign that ended with the smallest wheat harvest since the 1980s.
Some 86% of French soft wheat was rated in good or excellent condition as of Dec. 2, down from 87% a week earlier but up from 77% a year ago, FranceAgriMer said in a weekly cereal report.
The rating was nonetheless the second-lowest for the period in the past five years, suggesting some crops may have suffered from the soggy start to the growing season.
For winter barley, 83% of the crop was rated as in good or excellent condition, down from 84% the previous week and approaching the year-earlier score of 81%.
Soft wheat sowing was 96% complete while winter barley sowing was 99% done, with progress for both crops slightly ahead of the five-year average, FranceAgriMer's data showed.

Heineken Global Travel Retail (GTR) has set its sights on becoming the top beer and cider supplier in global travel retail by 2027, Global Trusted Retail Magazine reported on December 6.
The Dutch brewing giant plans to leverage its 350-brand portfolio, focus on quality and sustainability and to continue its consumer-focused, data-driven approach to the cruise line, ferry, military, border and airline channels. Already the second-biggest brewer globally and the market leader in Europe, the Heineken company has a presence in 190 markets worldwide with annual revenues of over €36.37 billion (US$38.38 billion).

Local media reports suggested more than 100 staff at the Mons-en-Baroeul site in the city of Lille began industrial action on Monday (9 December) as they seek an annual salary increase of €200 ($210).
Heineken workers at two breweries in the Netherlands have downed tools in recent weeks. However, that pay dispute was settled this week as the Amstel brand owner put forward a two-year offer, including a 4% salary increase in 2025 and a further 3% rise the following year.
Trade unions in France representing the Mons-en-Baroeul workers claim some have not had a salary increase since the 2003-04 negotiations.
Approached by Just Drinks to ascertain the status of its talks with staff and for an idea of how long the brewer expects the negotiation process to last, Heineken declined to comment.

Cyprus: Ber deliveries down 33% in November
|
Total beer deliveries in Cyprus dropped to 2.12 million litres in November, down 33% from 3.16 million litres in the same month last year, according to Cyprus Statistical Service data.
Domestic market deliveries fell 33.7% to 1.96 million litres, while exports decreased 23.2% to 0.16 million litres from 0.21 million litres in November 2023.

Australia: Heineken’s distributor attains rights for Birra Moretti in Australia

Drinkworks announced on December 11 that it has attained the national distribution rights for Birra Moretti in what is a landmark moment for the Heineken-owned distributor and beer brand, Drinks Trade reported.
The news falls seven years after current distributor Lion Australia dissolved its 14-year joint venture with Heineken and started a new distribution agreement for the ‘Italy’s favourite beer,’ Birra Moretti.
"Incorporating Birra Moretti into Drinkwork’s portfolio is a strategic decision aimed at expanding our beer offerings in one of the world’s top beer markets,” said Uday Sinha, Regional President of Heineken APAC.
“This distribution initiative demonstrates Heineken’s commitment to pursuing growth in areas that align with our long-term strategy."
Founded in 1859 by Luigi Moretti, Birra Moretti has grown into a world-renowned Italian lager, trailing behind only Peroni in regards to volume.
Drinkworks has confirmed that it will be the exclusive distributor of Birra Moretti in Australia from 10 January 2025. Up until then, customers will be able to order Birra Moretti beer from both Drinkworks and Lion to minimise disruption over the festive trading period.

UK: Damm gets exclusive distribution rights for Kirin Ichiban beer in the UK
|
Spanish beer company Damm has signed a long-term deal with Japanese brewery Kirin Holdings to become the exclusive UK distributor for its Kirin Ichiban beer, Better Retailing reported on December 9.
The agreement will see Damm take over from current distributor Carslberg Marston’s Brewing Company (CMBC) from 1 January 2025. It intends to expand the beer’s current UK footprint.
Kirin has been sold in the UK since 1993 and is the only major beer brewed exclusively with First Press wort – hence the name Ichiban, meaning “the first one”.
It is a popular beer in Japanese restaurants in the UK thanks to its authenticity.
Barcelona-based Damm is best-known in the UK for its Estrella Damm Spanish lager. It operates 17 production plants in the Iberian Peninsula and one in Bedford.
