Brewery news USA: Whiskey prices for at-home consumption nearly 2% cheaper this year but beer in bars and restaurants about 4% more expensive
Prices for a festive tipple this holiday season are slightly higher than last year, but some spirits, such as whiskey and tequila, are seeing price drops, MSN reported on December 13.

According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics whiskey for at-home consumption is nearly 2 percent cheaper than a year ago, while beer served in bars and restaurants is about 4 percent more expensive.

Drinking at home remains cheaper than going out, and beer remains the most affordable option compared to spirits.

Federal data shows alcohol prices have risen nearly 15 percent from 2019 to mid-2024, compared to a 23 percent increase in overall consumer prices. Alcohol costs rose 1.8 percent in November compared to a year earlier, while inflation for all goods increased 2.7 percent.

Sluggish alcohol sales have contributed to these modest price increases. “It’s been a pretty rough year for alcohol sales,” Marten Lodewijks – president of the U.S. division of beverage data firm IWSR – told NBC.

Tequila, often viewed as a high-end splurge, has become more affordable due to falling agave prices. In 2022, agave peaked at 32 Mexican pesos per kilogram at $1.60, but by February 2024, it had dropped to just 5 pesos per kilogram ...More info on site

Barley news Canada: Feed barley prices on steady uptrend
Feed barley prices in Western Canada remain on a steady uptrend, improving by C$30 to C$40 per tonne off their harvest lows hit in late August, Farmtario reported on December 12.

Feed barley into the key Lethbridge feeding area was priced at C$300 to C$305 per tonne area as of Dec. 2, according to the Alberta government’s weekly market review. That was up by about C$10 to C$20 per tonne over the past month. Delivered corn prices have also risen, but to a lesser extent, trading at about C$303 per tonne into Lethbridge in early December.

The Canadian dollar has lost nearly two cents relative to its United States counterpart since early November, to trade at its softest level in four-and-a-half years. The softer currency makes it more expensive for Canadian feedlots to buy corn priced in U.S. dollars.

Canadian imports of U.S. corn remain slow, with only 41,800 tonnes imported as of Dec. 5 during the marketing year that began at the start of September, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture data. That compares with 358,400 tonnes at the same point a year ago. In addition, there are only 41,000 tonnes of outstanding U.S. corn sales to Canada, well below the 451,600 ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Trademark Brewing ready to expand to Torrance
Trademark Brewing, a craft brewery and taproom found in Long Beach, is ready to expand to Torrance at 980 W 190th Street, Unit C9, What Now Los Angeles reported on December 10.

The company’s second location appears to be moving into The Enclave, a new food-centric development conveniently located between the 110 & 405 freeways, according to a recent liquor license application. While owners Sterling and Ilana Steffen couldn’t provide What Now Los Angeles with an opening date, the new Trademark Brewing will likely open sometime next year. Customers can expect over a dozen beers on tap and a large outdoor space.

This will be an excellent location for Trademark Brewing’s second location, considering The Enclave is a collection of premier office space, curated restaurants, activated outdoor common areas, art installations, and year-round events. Other eateries already open on the development include HiroNori Craft Ramen, Irb’s Burgers, Nook, Berry Brand, Limone Mediterranean, FAKA’s Island Grill, Long Beach Fish Grill, and more. Trademark Brewing will become the go-to spot in the shopping center for delicious craft beer.

“Trademark Brewing is the first production craft brewery in Long Beach and one of the only sustainability-focused breweries in California,” according to the company’s website. “Our special ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NH: Earth Eagle Brewings to close its original downtown Portsmouth location
Earth Eagle Brewings is closing its original downtown Portsmouth bar and restaurant at month's end, ending an era that all began with a small homebrewing supply business on High Street, Seacostonline.com reported on December 9.

But owner Alex McDonald, betting on the growth of his Somersworth location that opened in April 2021, will turn his staff's attention and energy toward operating the business in the Hilltop City.

It was becoming “increasingly difficult” to run the two locations, McDonald said. With the success of the Somersworth location, he said, he chose to close the Port City location. This means moving on after more than a decade of memories in Portsmouth of small-batch beer production, connecting with aspiring brewers and serving original brews.

“It was just the right time,” said McDonald, now Earth Eagle's sole owner. “It made more sense to try and focus on one location. Portsmouth is an awesome town, and we’re certainly going to miss being there. We hope someone takes the time to make the space home to another thriving business.”

McDonald and his wife, Gretchen, opened A&G Homebrew Supply on High Street in 2010. Two years later, Alex McDonald partnered with Butch Heilshorn to open the inaugural Earth Eagle Brewings ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, ME: Auburn’s Side By Each Brewing Co to close on December 31 unless a buyer is found
It wasn't so long ago in Maine when it seemed like the craft beer business had absolutely no limits. But in the last couple of years, the marketplace has proven that there are some as many people shift their love from craft beer to hard seltzers and ciders, WCYY reported on December 11.

In just the last 24 months, several established Maine breweries have shut their doors or sold their operations as the future looked challenging. Now, a popular craft brewery is Auburn is about to join those ranks.

Shared on Facebook by Side By Each Brewing Co, the brewery and restaurant shared a heartfelt message to the many customers who have joined them on their journey over the last 6 years.

“We’ve always said that while we take great beer, coffee, and food very seriously, we don’t take ourselves too seriously, and we’ll be doing our best to keep smiling for these last few weeks....Once again, thanks so much for your support. Serving this community for the last six years has been a privilege.”

No specific reason was given for the closure with the social media message.

Brewery news USA, MA: Brick & Feather Brewery closes Turner Falls location
Although Brick & Feather Brewery has closed its brick-and-mortar location on 11th Street after nine years, owner Lawrence George isn’t giving up his passion for brewing, Greenfield Recorder reported on December 12.

Come 2025, George will work with Berkshire Brewing Co. in South Deerfield to brew some new beers in smaller batches while continuing to brew customer-favorite IPAs and pale ales out of Castle Island Brewing Co. in Norwood.

The decision to close the Turners Falls brewery was not sudden. Several factors went into the decision, including an increase in competition and changing consumer habits.

George, who had previous experience with breweries in New Jersey, Boston and California as well as Berkshire Brewing Co., said that when he decided to open his own business in October 2015, Brick & Feather was one of only a handful of breweries in western Massachusetts.

“The brewing scene here in western Massachusetts in 10 years has changed so much, mostly because of just how many there are now. I think there were five breweries in Franklin County and there’s now like 18,” George said.

Another contributing factor was a decline in in-house purchases, he added.

“Our brewery was designed to sell our beer here in town, and we sold almost ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MN: Mankato Brewery set to close soon
One of the largest independent breweries in Minnesota, known for its inventive beer creations, is set to close soon, Star Tribune reported on December 10.

Mankato Brewery, which has sold craft beers in its taproom for 12 years, will have last call in late January, owner Tim Tupy said on Facebook on December 9.

“Our journey as a brewery is coming to an end,” said Tupy, who started the business out of his garage.

“This isn’t just a goodbye to brewing; it’s a farewell to the countless moments we’ve shared with all of you — our fans, our friends, our team, and our community,” Tupy said. “Together, we celebrated milestones, raised glasses to life’s joys, and built something truly special here in the region.”

Among the brewery’s fanciful concoctions over the years are Cinnamon Lemoncello Cake’d Up, a dessert beer reminiscent of a sponge cake with both the cinnamon and lemon, and Green Apple Caramel Sour, with a profile of tart green apples and caramel. Both were featured at the Minnesota State Fair.

In 2016, the brewery had a hit with its Boomchickapop Popcorn Ale, a sweet Belgian farmhouse-style saison. Each pint started with about 2 cups of Angie’s Boomchickapop, based in North Mankato. Liquor ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: TightKnit Brewing Co. to close location in downtown Greeley
For more than seven years, Greeley residents and visitors made memories at TightKnit Brewing Co. as they grabbed a few beers, enjoyed live music and bonded over soccer and other sports in downtown Greeley.

But when the calendar turns to 2025 in a few weeks, the downtown location will be no more, Greeley Tribune reported on December 10.

TightKnit management announced it is not renewing its lease for next year in social media posts. Monday, Dec. 23 will be TightKnit’s last day at the downtown location at 813 8th St.

“This decision has been very hard to make, especially in consideration of our awesome staff, our incredible regulars and being a part of the downtown community, but it’s time for a new chapter and change of our operation going forward in 2025,” management wrote in the post.

In January, the brewery was named the 2023 Breakout Brewery by the website Porch Drinking as part of its Colorado Best in Beer Year-End Honors.

There is a silver lining for regulars and fans of the brewery, though. The post stated that there will be open beer hall hours at TightKnit’s Evans brewhouse, 3940 Carson Ave., Unit 4. The brewhouse is also scheduled to host private events, parties ...More info on site

Hops news Australia: Australia's biggest hop grower slashes plantings in Tasmania and Victoria
Australia's biggest hop grower has slashed the amount of hops being grown for the new season at Bushy Park in southern Tasmania and the Rostrevor Hop Gardens in north east Victoria, ABC reported on December 12.

Hop Products Australia says there is a glut of hops on the world market as beer drinking practices change, after a long period of increased production in Australia year on year.

Tony Briscoe dropped into HPA headquarters in Bushy Park to find out more from farm manager Tom Parry.

Barley news Australia: Barley exports drop to 130,000 tonnes in October
Australia exported 130,009 tonnes of barley and 188,558t of sorghum in October, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

The barley figure comprises 90,679t of feed and 39,330t of malting, with both totals less than half the amounts shipped in September to represent the annual rundown in stocks.

The sorghum drop was less drastic, down 42pc from the September total of 323,448t.

On feed barley, China was the destination for 79,184t, or 87pc of barley shipped, with Thailand on 5397t and Vietnam on 1999t the second and third-biggest markets respectively.

Japan on 22,094t was the surprise major destination for October-shipped malting barley, followed by China on 11,254t and Mexico on 3000t.

China on 184,713t bought almost all of Australia’s October-shipped sorghum, with Taiwan on 2083t and The Philippines on 1672t the second and third-biggest markets respectively.

Flexi Grain pool manager Sam Roache said barley exports for October were the smallest monthly figure in many years, reflecting the record tight carry-out and a lack of new-crop options for the opening month of the shipping year.

“With this figure, it would be understandable to worry about Chinese demand, combined with some negative demand narrative, and August rumours about government grain import limitations, but the reality ...More info on site

Brewery news World: Carlsberg announces new head for Central & Eastern Europe and India region
Carlsberg has concluded the search for its next regional executive VP for the ‘Central & Eastern Europe and India’ region, Global Drinks Intel reported.

Nikos Kalaitzidakis will assume the position “no later than March”, the group said on December 12. The appointment comes four months after previous incumbent Lars Lehmann lined up his departure at the end of this month after 21 years with Carlsberg.

Moving across from food and beverage conglomerate The Olayan Group, Kalaitzidakis worked for Coca-Cola HBC for just under 18 years, rising to become the regional director for south-east Europe for five years before moving to Olayan in September 2023.

“Nikos Kalaitzidakis comes with extensive FMCG expertise,” said CEO Jacob Aarup-Andersen. “His vast work experience from more than 40 countries puts him in a perfect position to take over the leadership of the Carlsberg Group’s CEEI region … .”

‘Central & Eastern Europe and India’ was Carlsberg’s strongest-performing region in the three months to the end of September. delivering a rise in sales of just under 10%. The brewer also completed the buyout of its joint-venture partner in India and Nepal, CSAPL (Singapore) Holdings, earlier this year.
