USA: Michelob Ultra overcomes Bud Light and boasts largest draft share in the US
|
Bud Light, once the undisputed king of draft beer, is losing its crown as consumer tastes evolve. Recent data indicates this iconic brand has been surpassed by Michelob Ultra, marking a significant shift after decades of dominance, The Pinnacle Gazette reported on December 13.
According to Draftlines Technologies, which monitors over one million tap lines across the U.S., Michelob Ultra has not only closed the gap but now boasts the largest draft share. A change was observed particularly after last year's controversy surrounding Bud Light involving transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney, which led to numerous boycotts and some bars opting to remove Bud Light from their taps altogether.
This momentous decline has not gone unnoticed within the Anheuser-Busch empire. Once held as the king of the bars, Bud Light's dethronement came as it slid to third place among beer sales at grocery and convenience stores. To put it simply, Modelo Especial, another brand under rival Constellation Brands, is now basking at the top spot, with Michelob Ultra hot on its heels— showing growth figures of 4% against Bud Light's disheartening slump of 13%.

USA: American single malt finally recognised as an official whiskey category
|
After several years of deliberations, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) has issued its final rule establishing a new American Single Malt Whiskey category, Forbes reported on December 13.
The ruling will help protect and promote the growing category of American Single Malt (ASM) whiskey, according to the American Single Malt Commission (ASMWC) and the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States (DISCUS).“
Steve Hawley, the ASMWC President, an organization of several hundred ASM whiskey producers, hailed the landmark ruling from the TTB, noting that it “further cements our standing on the global stage in whiskey”
He added:
We applaud TTB for hearing the call from distillers, purveyors, and fans of American Single Malt and formalizing a definition that supports and protects our producers both here and abroad. It’s a momentous day for American Single Malt Whiskey, and this is just the beginning of a bright future for the category.
DISCUS President & CEO Chris Swonger thanked the TTB “for listening to the needs of U.S. distillers and working with the industry to provide an official standard for the American Single Malt Whiskey category.”

USA, NY: Wood Kettle Brewing Co. to close its Greece location on December 28
|
Wood Kettle Brewing Co. announced it would be closing its Greece location at the corner of Latta and Manitou on December 13.
In a Facebook post, the team said that it was not closing by choice, but thanked its community and regulars for the support over the years.
Wood Kettle, which opened there in 2017, is known for both its regular and rotating beers, as well as the live music at the tap room.
Their last day there is December 28.

Canada, BC: Vice & Virtue Brewing Co to shutter for good on December 21
|
Craft beer lovers in Kelowna only have a few days left to say goodbye to Vice & Virtue Brewing Co, Kelowna Now reported on December 14.
The North End brewery will be shutting its doors for the final time, at least in its current form, on Saturday, Dec. 21.
The ownership group of Matt Wentzell, Denis Shala, Carey Schell, David Paterson and Ryan Fipke has sold the business.
Wentzell told KelownaNow that it’s a “bittersweet time, of course,” as they’ve put a lot of effort and energy into the brewery, or "their baby" as he called it, since opening in the summer of 2018.
"To be quite frank, it's a tough time to be in the beer industry these days,” he said of the reason they decided to sell Vice & Virtue.
Wentzell won’t comment on the new owners, as it’s not his news to share, but expects those details to be revealed by the appropriate party relatively soon.
Since he chatted with KelownaNow, other local media outlets have reported that the nearby Red Bird Brewing is the purchaser, but no official announcement has been made.

USA, SD: Obscure Brewing to close after five years in business
|
Obscure Brewing, a casual east Sioux Falls brewery, is closing on Dec. 28 after five years, according to a Facebook post on Saturday, December 14, Argus Leader reported.
The announcement states closing was a “difficult” decision to make after “much thought and reflection,” and that more details will be shared at a later time.
The brewery, at 5200 E. Grant St. next to Digz Volleyball and close to Dawley Farm Village, began construction in summer 2018 and opened the following year.
The 6,254-square-foot facility features seating for 105 total and a 15-barrel brewing system and a large outdoor patio. Craft beer enthusiasts can choose from a wide selection of 18 brews, and made-to-order pizza and appetizers.
Owner Don Choate said he wanted to open the brewery on the east side of Sioux Falls, given many of the city’s breweries reside downtown.
Obscure Brewing is the realization of Choate's dream. It's a goal he had worked toward for nearly two decades as a hobbyist and homebrewer, according to previous Argus Leader reporting.
The name Obscure references “Jude the Obscure,” a novel by Thomas Hardy that tells the tale of a working-class man who dreams of becoming a scholar and making something of himself.

USA, GA: Torch Hop Brewery to shut its doors for good by the end of the year
|
A popular brewery on Atlanta's Ponce de Leon Avenue is shutting its doors for good at the end of the year, FOX 5 Atlanta reported on December 17.
Torch Hop Brewery announced the plans to close in an Instagram post on December 17.
Owners Chris and Stephen Bivins started the brewery in 2016 after graduating from Auburn University. Over the last eight years and eight months, the restaurant has served up its trademark IPAs and fun takes on burgers and other bar food.
"We are forever grateful to the team members who have put so much effort into making Torched Hop a special place. We are also thankful for the many regulars, friends and family members who have supported us on this journey. It’s not the fairy tale ending we had hoped for. But we have created memories that will last a lifetime," the owners wrote on Instagram.
The post did not give a reason for the decision to close.
The last day of business will be Dec. 31.

World: Whisky market faces challenging times as decline deepens
|
The latest Whisky Intelligence Report by Noble & Co reveals that the bubble of soaring prices for rare whisky may have finally burst, The Drinks Business reported on December 10.
The fine and rare whisky market, historically known for its stability and investment potential, has hit a rocky patch in 2024. According to Noble & Co’s latest Whisky Intelligence Report, the market is experiencing a sharper-than-expected decline, with auction values and volumes falling dramatically.
The report reveals a 50% year-on-year drop in auction values for Q2 2024, accompanied by a 52% decline in the number of bottles transacted. These figures mark an acceleration from the already tough conditions in the first quarter. May, historically a key month for high-value auctions, accounted for just 24% of annual value traded, significantly below expectations.
The narrative was similar last year, with Noble & Co’s 2023 report stating that the whisky market had “taken a turn for the worst.” Duncan McFadzean, the head of food and drink at Noble & Co, said: “If whisky investors and collectors were in choppy waters last year (2023), this year they’re in the eye of the storm and are battening down the hatches,” The Times reported.

Brewing companies in China have been seeking cooperation with domestic agricultural enterprises to breed and grow barley, hoping to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers, China Daily reported on December 14.
On Oct 31, Budweiser China celebrated its collaboration with Jiangsu Nongken Group, a State-owned agricultural company, at Xinyang farm in Sheyang county, Jiangsu province, by planting a new crop of barley which is expected to be harvested at the end of May next year before being supplied to Budweiser China.
While China is the world's biggest producer and consumer of beer, the country is also the biggest importer of raw materials for brewed beers, barley in particular, according to Yuan Yue, secretary general of the beer branch of the China Alcoholic Drinks Association.
"That means the domestic supply of those ingredients has fallen short of the demand growth. As a result, China's beer industry has been troubled by this imbalance for a long period," Yuan said.
Malt and hops, two main ingredients in brewing beers, play an essential role in bringing out a mellow taste and an aromatic flavor. Yet, for decades, China has been importing malt barley and hops from markets around the world, including Europe, Australia, Canada and Argentina.

Stronger beers are increasingly favoured in India’s premium beer segment as consumers opt for higher-alcohol brews over milder alternatives, according to a recent report in India’s The Hindu businessline.
The shift is driven by the minimal price difference between weak and strong beers, allowing consumers to get more potency for a comparable cost. Whereas, historically, Indian beer consumers have preferred traditional lagers dominated by a few major brands, over the past four decades, newer entrants have challenged established players by offering stronger variants, reinforcing the preference for robust beers without significant price hikes.
Consequently, Indian beer preferences now differ markedly from global trends due to its unique cultural, climatic, and economic factors. While international markets favour lighter beers like lagers and pilsners, Indian consumers increasingly gravitate towards lagers with an alcohol by volume (ABV) between 5% and 8%.
In India, beer consumption is often linked to social gatherings and celebrations, contrasting with the more casual or mealtime drinking habits seen in other places worldwide.
Moreover, there is a preference for lagers with full-bodied tastes that complement the country’s spicy cuisine, whereas global markets embrace more diverse styles such as IPAs, stouts and wheat beers for their unique flavours.

Sri Lanka: Lion Brewery opens its state-of-the-art craft beer innovation centre
|
Lion Brewery (Ceylon) PLC, the biggest brewer in Sri Lanka, has officially opened its groundbreaking LKR4 billion (USD13.76 million) state-of-the-art craft beer innovation centre, the first such research establishment in the country, asiabrewersnetwork.com reported on December 6.
The facility will be dedicated to the research and development (R&D) of craft brews, and will focus on incorporating local ingredients, including the country’s iconic Ceylon Tea.
The brewery has already diversified into the craft beer sector and has developed a wide range of innovative brews, including Elle Valley White (a wheat beer), Thambapanni Red Ale, Ambalavi Mango, Cucumber Lime, Fest Celebration Lager, Blonde (a Belgian-style beer), Pure Ceylon Tea Beer, and Coffee Stout.
The company’s main brewery has an annual capacity of 200 million litres of which about 160 million litres are used, but its minimum production volume of 168,000 litres per batch has created difficulties in experimenting with new products without generating excessive wastage. The new R&D centre addresses this hurdle by allowing for much smaller batches of just 2,000 litres.
At the opening, Lion Brewery Director and CEO R.H. Meewakkala said that the facility is expected to help the company grow its export share from 15% to 20% of total output.

UK: Carlsberg gets approval to buy Britvic
|
Carlsberg's £3.3 billion deal to buy Robinsons squash maker Britvic has been given the green light by Britain's competition watchdog, smoothing the way for one of the year's biggest takeover deals, BBC reported on December 17.
The two businesses announced the agreement in July to bring together Carlsberg's array of beers with the soft drinks portfolio of Britvic, based in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire.
In September, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said it would launch an initial probe, but confirmed on Tuesday, external it would be not be referring the tie-up for a full in-depth investigation.
The deal is now expected to complete on 16 January.

Australia: Carlton & United Breweries’ Carlton Dry 3.5% named Australia’s best-selling beer
|
Carlton & United Breweries’ Carlton Dry 3.5% has been named as Australia’s best-selling new beer, based on Circana volume sales up to 27 October, Drinks Trade reported on December 17.
“While economic pressures this year were challenging, there was good performance in areas like mid-strength beer,” wrote Amanda Sellers, Group CEO of Asahi Beverages, in this letter to industry.
“In March, we launched Carlton Dry 3.5%, which quickly became Australia’s most popular new beer. It shows how we’re meeting the changing needs of beer lovers, who want great-tasting brews while moderating their alcohol consumption.”
The news follows on from Carlton Dry being recognised as the Fan Favourite Contemporary Beer at the 2024 Australian Drinks Awards, taking over from fellow CUB beer Great Northern Original.
According to CUB’s Head of Beer Ben Eyles, both Carlton Dry and Carlton Dry 3.5% are well positioned to cater to the growing better-for-you beer category.
“Health and wellness shows up in beer in the form of moderation, so lower alcohol and then lower carbs and calories… and Dry has been a pioneer in this space,” Eyles told Drinks Trade.
